NBA Betting News and Notes 2-6-2012

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Super Bowl is in the history books but the NBA All-Star Game is already on the horizon and there are all kinds of interesting goings on around the league right now.  This week, I’ll focus on a handful of teams with notes and quotes that can point us in the right direction for our NBA wagers.

Dallas Mavericks – When you look at the Dallas statistical profile this year, one thing stands out like a sore thumb.  Dirk Nowitzki  – the Mavs longtime superstar and the guy who guided them to their first ever NBA title last summer – has basically been a non-factor from Day 1.  Last year, Dirk led the team in scoring at 23 points per game.  He was the Mavs #2 rebounder, behind Tyson Chandler.  He shot better than 51% from the floor for the entire season, and better than 39% from three point range.  But, even after taking four games off to ‘improve his conditioning’, Dirk’s 2012 numbers can only be considered a major disappointment.

The numbers don’t lie.  Dirk is scoring only 17.2 points per game this year.  His shooting percentage is down to 45.5% and Read more

NBA Betting Alert: Phoenix-Atlanta total pounded OVER

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Phoenix at Atlanta -8 O/U 190.5

Looks likes the Phoenix Suns' bench did a bit of running in Saturday's 95-89 win over Charlotte.

“We need to really push up the tempo and not get into the half-court as much and just play at a break-neck speed,” Suns forward Josh Childress said. “Athletically, we can. We just have to let go mentally and play that way. “

“We need to score out of transition, and that’s most effective if we’re playing out of stops,” Lopez said.

It also looks like the betting markets have taken notice...

NBA Handicapping: Chicago Bulls weather storm as schedule difficulty eases

02.06.2012     11:25 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Chicago Bulls haven't played the most difficult schedule in terms of competition, but spot-wise, few have had it tougher. After tonight, the Bulls will have played a league-high 27 games. They played their first 26 in 42 days – 16 of which came on the road. They are in the midst of a nine-game road trip and Derrick Rose and Luol Deng rank among the league leaders in minutes per game -- both perhaps saved some by sitting out due to injuries. The schedule though relaxes the back half of the campaign. After the current road trip they play 13 of their next 17 at home. And have a modest 14 games the final 29 days of the regular season.

‘‘Practice is huge,’’ Thibodeau said. ‘‘[But] if your schedule is overloaded — like 19 games for us when we’re not having shootarounds or practice — you have to address those things in a walk-through or in a ballroom, which is entirely different.’’

‘‘You have to be objective,’’ Read more

NBA Handicapping: Los Angeles Clippers sign Kenyon Martin

02.06.2012     07:46 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Veteran Kenyon Martin, who was most recently playing in China, signed a one-year deal with the Los Angeles Clippers last weekend.

"As serious as we are about playing the right way and winning, that's what Kenyon is all about. He's going to fit in perfectly," Billups said after Los Angeles' 107-81 win at the Washington Wizards on Saturday night. "Nobody is expecting Kenyon to come here and score 20 and 10 (rebounds). He's not a 20-and-10 guy. He's an effort guy. He's a defensive specialist who can also get you 15 points."

NBA Handicapping: San Antonio Spurs starting to play better defense

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Article discussing San Antonio's recent defensive improvements. Over the last three games, the Spurs have held teams to 73, 91 81 and 91 in regulation (3-1 SU, 4-0 ATS). The Spurs play host to Oklahoma City on Saturday. In the first meeting, the Thunder shot 51% from the floor en route to a 108-96 victory.

The Spurs have limited opponents to an average of 86 points and 43.2 field goal shooting after permitting an average of 96.4 points and 46.3 percent in the first 18 games of the season.

NBA Handicapping: New York Knicks push pace and find offensive stride

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We cashed our Eastern Conference O/U Game of the Month to close out January and followed it up with another 20* O/U Game of the Month winner last night when the Bulls beat the Knicks 105-102. That’s back-to-back top-play 20* Big Drive winners on Knicks games over the total after they pounded the Pistons in their previous game 113-86. Both games went over the posted total by at least 15 points. With Carmelo Anthony out of the lineup, the Knicks pushed the pace in a pair of losses before the last two games, and ‘Melo scored 25 and 26 points in his return the past two games as New York opened up their offense, hit more shots and pushed the pace. The Pistons were the perfect opponent to appease the restless New York fans, and despite yesterday’s loss to the Bulls, New York is a team worth riding over the total with their sub-par defense and more open offense.

Here is my game write-up of the Knicks-Pistons game provided to clients earlier this week.  Recent play, insightful information and positive pointspread prognosis led us to another over the total Big Drive winner.

We’re projecting plenty of running, shooting and scoring Read more

Denver +1 at LA Clippers O/U 206
Recommendation: Denver

My clients and I have made good money supporting Denver through the first six weeks of the NBA season, and the Nuggets remain an undervalued commodity as they travel to LA for a ‘quick turnaround’ revenge meeting tonight. We’re catching George Karl’s squad in a real moneymaking situation – off a poorly played loss, as they blew a double digit fourth quarter lead against Memphis on Tuesday, followed by another blown lead in overtime. That loss came on the heels of another blown fourth quarter lead at home against the Clips, a game where Chauncey Billups lived up to his ‘Mr. Big Shot’ moniker, on fire from three point range down the stretch.

The Nuggets haven’t lost three in a row all year, and I don’t expect that to change following tonight’s game. Coach George Karl: “I actually think our mental attitude on the road court has been better-focused than at Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Pick: Los Angeles Clippers at Utah Jazz

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
LA Clippers -2.5 at Utah O/U 196.5
Recommendation: Los Angeles

It’s clear this LA Clippers team is coming together after adding so many parts during the short offseason.  It's taken time for Chris Paul, Chauncey Billups and to some extent Caron Butler to find their roles within this team.  Certainly for Paul, it’s also important to garner practice and playing time to learn his new teammates, while his ability to improve his peers on the court is second to none.  Now, they’ve been able to build confidence with key wins against the Nuggets and Thunder in the last week.  Keep in mind they’ll still be keying on this short jaunt to Utah.  When the Clippers played the Jazz on January 17th they were flat out embarrassed 108-79.  In that contest the Clippers were off a couple of key wins against Miami and the Lakers, while playing their second of three straight games.  They also had Dallas on deck.  It was clearly a no-show Read more

NBA Handicapping: Van Gundy at a loss, talks of Howard heading to Chicago surface

01.31.2012     11:44 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Orlando head coach Stan Van Gundy attempts to explain the current implosion taking place with his team. The Magic were at one point 11-4 SU, 9-6 ATS, and then this happened. They bounced back with a win over Indiana but have since dropped four straight. The only positive was a pointspread cover in last night's 74-69 loss at Philadelphia (a very deceiving final score as the 76ers led by 18 with less than four minutes to go). Making matters worse, a quick Google News search of "Dwight Howard and Chicago Bulls" yields nearly 1,000 results. They have two seemingly winnable games upcoming with Washington and Cleveland at home. But following that is a difficult stretch that could very well define the rest of the season: at Indiana, vs. LA Clippers, vs. Miami, vs. Atlanta, at Milwaukee, at Minnesota, vs. Philadelphia, vs. Milwaukee...and then five straight road games including trips to Miami and Atlanta.

"It's easy to come up with the reasons," Van Gundy said for his team's poor play recently. "I could be a sportswriter doing that. I don't mean that even jokingly. ... It's always easy to find the reasons. That's not hard. The hard part is to solve it. To make it better."

"I don't think you ever know for Read more
