NBA Gambling Update: Boston continues to have Orlando's number

01.27.2012     05:51 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Not only did Orlando's shooting woes continue against Boston with a dismal 30-for-79 38% showing from the floor, but the Magic managed to blow a 27-point first half lead. The Celtics were also playing without Ray Allen and Rajon Rondo. Boston held Orlando to just eight points in the fourth quarter en route to a 91-83 victory. The Celtics return home tonight to face Boston while the Magic travel to New Orleans.

Boston at Orlando -8.5 O/U 176

The Orlando Magic have had plenty of offensive struggles against the Boston Celtics over the last three seasons. Nowhere was that more evident than when these two teams met in Boston on Monday and the Magic shot 16-of-65, 24.6% from the floor in an 87-56 loss. Over the last 10 meetings, Orlando has hit only 40% of their field goals against the Celtics who are 7-3 SU, 6-3-1 ATS.

"We have trouble scoring against them," Magic guardJ.J. Redicksaid. "That's not a secret. They're a great defense, and we've had so many battles with them that they've kind of figured us out."

"I think the answer for us is we've got to somehow get their bodies off of us or try to get 'em to put two guys on the ball," Van Gundy said. "A lot of that is going Read more

NBA Night Cap Free Play: Los Angeles Clippers at Los Angeles Lakers

LA Clippers +4 at LA Lakers O/U 186
Recommendation: Clippers

The Lakers are going through a very difficult transition from Phil Jackson's triangle offense – an offense that they ran successfully for more than a decade -- and Mike Brown's more conventional offensive approach.  The Lakers have reached the 100 point mark only once in their first 18 games.  Even with Kobe Bryant pouring in points on a nightly basis – he's scored 30+ seven times in the Lakers last ten games – the rest of the team simply hasn't found any sort of offensive flow.

That lack of offensive production is likely to be a problem again tonight as the Lakers match up against the LA Clippers.  The Clippers beat up on LA in a pair of preseason meetings, and continued that domination in the first regular season meeting between these two teams, a 102-94 Clips victory that wasn't really as close as the final score would indicate.  But because this meeting is a 'home' game Read more

NBA Handicapping: Trail Blazers adjust to lack of practice, new style

Memphis at Portland -5 O/U 187

Article on the Portland Trail Blazers and their struggles with the lack of practice time and head coach Nate McMillian's desire to play at a faster tempo. The Blazers had a tough go of it on a recent six-game road trip – averaged 91 ppg, topped 100 points just once and finished 2-4 SU. A pretty strong home/road dichotomy at work with Portland shooting 46.1% and averaging 104.3 ppg at home and 40.9% and 90.4 ppg on the highway. Last night at the Rose Garden, they bounced back with a solid 101-89 win over Sacramento. Tonight, they play host to Memphis.

"Nate wants us to play fast, and we hear him," center Marcus Camby said. "We want to play fast, but for us to play fast, we have to get stops defensively."

"I think what we are finding out is we do need exhibition Read more

NBA Handicapping: Cleveland hoping to turn things around at Miami

Cleveland at Miami -12.5 O/U 202

The fact the Cleveland has six wins at this point in the season has to be considered a fairly impressive accomplishment. But their last two games looked a lot like last year with a 39-point home loss to the Derrick Rose-less Chicago Bulls and a 27-point road loss to Atlanta. Cleveland has had two days to emotionally recover and is eager for a bounce back performance tonight in Miami.

"We just lost two games by a substantial margin, so our focus is getting back to playing the type of basketball we were playing to start the season," said Gibson, who missed Saturday's game at Atlanta after a death in his extended family. "It's definitely a big game for us -- because of what's happened the last two games. We really want to go out and play well."

"We plan to get it back on track," Gibson said. Read more

NBA Betting News and Notes 1-23-2012

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We’re nearly a quarter of the way through the lockout shortened NBA season, and there’s no shortage of key personnel or gameplan strategy changes around the league. Let’s take a look at a handful of teams with issues to discuss, concentrating on the notes and quotes that have the potential to make us some money in the days and weeks ahead.

Cleveland – The Cleveland Cavaliers returned home following a relatively successful road trip (3-4 SU, wins at Charlotte, Phoenix and Minnesota), with a miserable two game homestand. First, they lost by ten to Golden State, and they followed it up with a 39 point home loss – the worst home loss in franchise history – to a Bulls team playing without Derrick Rose. Then, the Cavs followed up that ugly blowout loss with another miserable showing the next night, losing by 28 at Atlanta. Obviously, there was a great deal of concern following those dismal showings.

Head coach Byron Scott: "We didn’t react to their physical play whatsoever – besides the whining… We’re going to see what type of men we have. Sometimes it takes hitting rock bottom Read more

NBA Betting Alert: Dallas says Nowitzki needs to get back in shape

Phoenix at Dallas -5.5 O/U 183

The Dallas Mavericks have decided to shut down Dirk Nowitzki who according to reports has a bum knee and is out of shape. He won't rest but rather go through an intense regiment over the next week in order to shore up some of his issues. Starting tonight, he'll miss three games; at home vs. Phoenix, Minnesota and Utah.

"We're going to shut Dirk down for four games, from game activity,'' coach Rick Carlisle said. "At this point, we feel he needs an uninterrupted eight days of work to resolve some physical issues and some conditioning issues. This is the decision of (athletic trainer) Casey Smith and me.

"If it were up to Dirk, he would play. But right now, we feel the right thing is to take this time, get some things resolved and hopefully by next Sunday, he'll be feeling a lot better and ready to Read more

NBA Handicapping: Teams able to handle difficult scheduling spots thus far

01.23.2012     06:01 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Article from the Los Angeles Times on the third game of back-to-back-to-backs in the NBA. Heading into this past weekend, teams were a solid 8-4 straight up (all eight wins came at home). The overall record of the three-game sets is 22-14 SU.

Every team must play at least one back-to-back-to-back set, and 12 — the Clippers, Atlanta, Denver, Detroit, Indiana, Minnesota, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Portland, San Antonio and Washington — will play two sets. What might have felt like a 10K for NBA teams in January could become a wobbly-legged marathon by April.

NBA Betting Stock Watch: Boston Celtics not built for shortened season

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Sell the Boston Celtics – Last week we discussed how the Denver Nuggets were a perfect fit for the lockout NBA season.  Well, the Celtics are on the complete other end of the spectrum.  They are declining in so many ways and when you add in the lockout, it has become an avalanche of sorts.  Last year, Boston made a huge decision to trade Kendrick Perkins for Jeff Green.  Up until this point, the move has backfired with Green out for the year thus leaving a glaring hole down low.  No question the losses of Perkins and Tony Allen has put more pressure on Boston’s aging veterans.  Another thing to consider is the Celtics are now in their second year without defensive coordinator Tom Thibodeau who has the Chicago Bulls playing the best defense in the league.  The trade rumors surrounding point guard Rajon Rondo certainly don’t help either.  Now, during this lockout season, their huge concerns with age and depth are magnified.  The Big Three of Ray Allen (36 years old), Paul Pierce (34), and Kevin Garnett (35), will be pressed into more minutes with their shallow roster.  Many expect this to perhaps be Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Pick: Oklahoma City Thunder at New Jersey Nets

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Oklahoma City -8 at New Jersey O/U 199
Recommendation: Oklahoma City

The Thunder continue their road trip tonight in the Meadowlands against New Jersey. These two teams are polar opposites in terms of NBA talent. The Thunder has built their team around the immense talents of Kevin Durant, while recently signing point guard Russell Westbrook to a long term contract. They’ve filled out their roster with solid role players and have placed an emphasis on defense. Meanwhile, the Nets are trying to change their fortunes with a lottery type attitude. They invested a lot in retaining point guard Deron Williams and were forced to overhaul their roster in the process. Of late, rumors are circulating that Williams will be looking to play somewhere else after his contract expires at the end of this season. Not a good sign considering the talent surrounding him is so poor. The Nets have changed their philosophy on offense and pretty much rely on just jacking threes. On defense, Read more
