NBA Handicapper Free Play: Memphis Grizzlies at Golden State Warriors

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Memphis +2 at Golden State O/U 188
Recommendation: Memphis

Memphis hits the West Coast tonight to face the Warriors with revenge in mind.  Way back in December the struggling Grizzlies were trounced on their home court by the Warriors 108-82.  Of course, much has changed in the almost four months since they last played.  For starters, the Grizzlies are clearly hitting their late season stride.  They’ve been about as good as anyone in the NBA racking up a 28-9 record since January 10th.  Health is the main ingredient for the resurgence with Marc Gasol in the middle playing his usual all-around game.  The Grizzlies took some time to gel this season under new coach Dick Joerger.  Joerger tried to implement some new things in the early going, and there was an eventual give and take before the kinks were worked out.  With the playoffs approaching you can be sure no one will want to play this grit-and-grind squad.  Meanwhile, the Warriors Read more

NBA Handicapping: Washington Wizards trying to avoid seventh or eighth seed

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Indiana -2.5 at Washington O/U 188.5

Baring a complete collapse, the Washington Wizards (36-35) are headed the postseason. But of late, they've struggled to step up in class and are only a 1.5 games ahead of Charlotte for the much-need sixth seed in the Eastern Conference. They face another challenge tonight with Indiana coming to town. Following that, the schedule lightens considerably with Atlanta, Charlotte (twice), Boston, New York, Chicago, Orlando, and Milwaukee.

“It feels good to be in this position, knowing that we’re more than likely going to be a playoff team. But at the same time, we can’t get too complacent with that, because we’re not there yet,” Bradley Beal said. “I mean, anything can happen. We could probably — knock on Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Play: Cleveland Cavaliers at Detroit Pistons

Cleveland +6 at Detroit O/U 205
Recommendation: Cleveland

The betting markets have soured on the Cleveland Cavaliers since leading scorer and assist man Kyrie Irving got hurt. The dead Cavs had just pulled off outright upset road wins as big underdogs at Golden State and Phoenix before the injury, but they lost by 22 on the night that Irving went down.

Since that blowout loss to the Clippers, the Cavs have been pointspread machines, reeling off five consecutive pointspread covers as they travel to Detroit tonight.  That stretch includes a pair of outright upsets against the Knicks and Raptors along with a trio of closer than expected losses against elites Houston, Oklahoma City and Miami.

One player’s injury is another player’s opportunity.  While the markets downgraded the Cavs after Irving got hurt, backup point guard Jarrett Jack stepped into the starters roll. And much as he did two years ago in New Orleans, or last year in Golden State, Jack Read more

NBA Betting News: Denver Nuggets determined to finish season strong

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Denver at San Antonio -13 O/U 216.5

With 11 games remaining and no chance of a postseason berth the Denver Nuggets are trying to find ways to stay motivated. They’ll have a chance to play spoiler with two games apiece against San Antonio, Memphis, Houston, and Golden State. The Nuggets have actually played decent basketball of late with straight up wins in five of their last eight (6-2 ATS).

"It's kind of like a playoff thing," Arthur said. "You've got San Antonio, and then we have a day in between and you play them again. So it's like a playoff feel. The good thing about it is we can see what we did wrong from the first game and try to make our corrections in the second game."

"Just play our game, stick to the basics, follow the game plan," Nuggets guard Ty Lawson said. "I feel like that will always Read more

NBA Gambling: Indiana Pacers play host to Miami Heat

Miami at Indiana

The Indiana Pacers have seen their lead in the Eastern Conference playoff standings dwindle to just two games over the Miami Heat. They've lost seven of their last 12 (2-10 ATS) though eight of those 12 contests were on the highway.

"We look like sh—," West told The Star. "We're just not performing. We're just not playing well. We're not shooting the ball well. We're not sharing it and when we're not sharing it, we become stagnant."

"We just haven't been having fun," Pacers All-Star Paul George said after Tuesday's practice. "Somewhere along the line, we just forgot how much fun this game is and forgot how much fun we made it. More than that, how much fun we made this arena."

NBA Handicapping: Washington Wizards return home after sub-par West Coast swing

Phoenix -1.5 at Washington O/U 210

The Washington Wizards are rested, ready, and determined to get bounce back after a recent 1-3 West Coast trip. They are currently 2.5 games ahead of Charlotte for the much-coveted sixth seed in the Eastern Conference.  Washington last played in Denver and Sunday and plays host to Phoenix tonight.

“That’s not the trip we wanted and that lets you know, you try to get too complacent and think you’ve already got a playoff spot, which you don’t,” said Wall, who has never played meaningful games this late in an NBA season. “We easily could’ve been 3-1 or 2-2, to give ourselves a better chance to keep our space from other teams, especially the way Charlotte’s playing and Brooklyn’s Read more

NBA Handicapping: Golden State's Jackson clashes with brass

03.25.2014     02:40 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Here's something worth noting. Golden State, specifically head coach Mark Jackson, recently reassigned assistant coach Brian Scalabrine. And by reassigned, we mean he will no longer be on the bench. That alone probably isn’t that big of a deal but it’s not an isolated incident. Jackson and former assistant Mike Malone, who is now the HC for Sacramento, butted heads on more than a few occasions. It was generally understood that Malone did a lot of the X's and O's while Jackson played motivator. Again, we're dealing with a team that is sitting at 44-27 in the Western Conference – winning cures all. But issues like this have the potential to cause damage, particularly in the postseason.

"Over the past two years, Jackson's difficulty with managing his coaching staff and creating a functional work environment has developed into one of the issues that threatens his future on the job, league sources said."

NBA Handicapping: Minnesota Timberwolves all but out of playoff hunt

03.24.2014     12:31 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Minnesota at Memphis -7.5 O/U 197.5

The Minnesota Timberwolves have been in a perpetual state of .500 for much of the season and as a result find themselves 6.5 games out of the eighth spot in the Western Conference. Following last night’s meltdown loss to Phoenix, the team appears accepting that the postseason isn’t going to happen.

“They’re ahead of us [in the standings], obviously,” Love said. “We looked at that like this was our playoffs right there, and we lost. So this one hurts a lot more than the others.”

Asked if this was as frustrated as he’s been this season, Love said, “No question. We should have won that game, plain and simple.”

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wise Guy Report: Late season NBA betting opportunities

03.24.2014     09:10 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
While the betting markets focus on post-season college basketball tournaments and the upcoming baseball season, the long and winding NBA campaign still offers plenty of wagering opportunities down the homestretch.

There are still three and a half weeks left in the regular season.  Most squads have between 12 and 14 games remaining.  And very quietly, underneath the radar, we’ve seen a handful of late season morphers; teams playing well above or well below their full season power rating numbers.  Those are the teams I’m looking to focus on in this week’s Vegas Wiseguy Report, particularly in the Eastern Conference.

The Philadelphia 76ers have lost 24 games in a row as I write this very early on Monday morning.  This is no surprise – the Sixers have been openly tanking since last summer, playing for ping-pong balls, not victories.  And for the better part of the first four months of the campaign, the sportsbooks couldn’t hang a line high enough to get bettors to support this completely anonymous, sorry squad.

Philly hasn’t gotten any better in recent weeks.  Read more
