NBA Handicapping: Woeful Rockets hold players-only meeting

11.17.2015     02:06 PM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
The Houston Rockets have been trolling bettors hard the first three weeks of the season. They opened 0-3 SU and ATS, failing to top 93 points in the process. Followed that up with four straight wins (3-1 ATS) on the strength of 113.5 ppg. And then proceeded to drop four straight (0-4), including three at home, against Boston, Dallas, Denver, and Brooklyn - not exactly a who's who of power rating elite. Those four losses came by an average of 11.3 ppg despite the Rockets laying -4.5, -7.5, -6.5, and -11.5. So now of course it's time to hold a players-only meeting. Houston has tonight off before playing host to Portland on Wednesday.

"What happens in the room, stays in the room," center Dwight Howard said following practice. "It was good for us to sit down and talk but it's a long season and you can't get caught up in losing a couple of games and getting upset and so frustrated and feel like it's the end of the world. It is embarrassing. We hate to lose but at the same time we have a long season

NBA Handicapping: Thunder still adjusting to Donovan

11.09.2015     08:26 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
It's been a sluggish start to the season for the Oklahoma City Thunder who last night snapped a three-game losing streak to improve to 4-3 (3-4 ATS). Kevin Durant talked about the team's struggles in adjusting to first-year head coach Billy Donovan's new defensive system. The Thunder obviously play at a fast clip but they've still allowed 103 or more points in every game but one thus far. Efficiency-wise, the Thunder rank 19th in the league at 101.7. That's actually an improvement from last year's group that allowed 103.1. That may however have to do with the NBA’s early season offensive struggles. Eighteen teams are currently below 100.0 in offensive efficiency whereas only five squads finished below that mark all of last season.

“It’s a different defense for us,” Kevin Durant said. “The schemes are great, it’s perfect for us. We just have to continue to figure out what we want to give up and what we want to take away and just keep working at it.”

NBA Handicapping: Breaking down head coaching changes

10.23.2015     08:13 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
A quick look at the NBA head coaching changes heading into the 2015-16 season.

Team: Chicago Bulls
Old Coach: Tom Thibodeau
New Coach: Fred Hoiberg
What we know so far: A shift in style has been the offseason theme. Thibodeau was a good coach but accused of running his players into the ground both physically and mentally. Hoiberg isn't a hard-ass and has a rep of running an up-tempo, free flowing offense. The Bulls were actually 10th in the league in offensive efficiency last season despite Derrick Rose's annual absence. No matter what the the sport, an increase in pace typically results in a decline in defensive production -- something the Bulls relied on heavily under Thibs.

Team: Denver Nuggets
Old Coach: Brian Shaw
New Coach: Michael Malone
What we know so far: Malone is by all accounts a good coach though walked into a no-win situation in Sacramento. Of course with Denver lined at 27.5 wins, you could make the argument Malone just took Read more

NBA Gambling: League won't place expansion team in Las Vegas

07.20.2015     08:31 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
An NBA expansion team in Las Vegas? Not likely.

"There are no obstacles whatsoever in terms of the city to us coming to Las Vegas," Silver said. "We had an All-Star Game here (in 2007). We chose to put our largest summer league here. We have never suggested the fact sports betting takes place legally in Las Vegas is an impediment to us coming here. The reception we have received from this community has been terrific.

"The ultimate issue is that we are just not in an expansion mode right now. It doesn’t mean that expansion will never be in our future, but it’s just not at the moment."

The NBA wants Canadians to bet on its games

06.25.2015     08:38 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
The NBA continues to show a pro-sports betting stance as it recently withdrew its opposition to single game wagering in Canada.

"Consistent with the NBA's current position regarding legalized sports betting in the United States, the NBA is no longer opposed to legalized sports betting in Canada so long as there is an appropriate legislative framework that protects the integrity of the game under strict regulatory requirements and technological safeguards. These would include, at a minimum, mandatory monitoring and reporting of unusual betting-line movements; a licensing protocol for betting operators; minimum-age verification measures; geo-blocking technology to ensure betting is available only where it is legal; mechanisms to identify and exclude people with gambling problems; and education about responsible gaming."

NBA Gambling: Bettors cash in big on Golden State's blowout win

06.12.2015     07:55 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
The Holy Cow That Line Can't Be Right side was the Never In Doubt side as Golden State's turned in a 21-point, Game 4 victory last night and made a lot of bettors happy. After being outplayed for a good portion of the first three games, the Warriors opened -2.5 for Game 4. After being bet up to -3, Cleveland money pushed the line back to -2.5. But then came the steam. Yesterday afternoon, Golden State money started to pour in and didn't stop as the line at CRIS peaked at -4.5 (-119) 45 minutes per tip.

With the series tied 2-2, the adjusted series price has jumped from Golden State -115 to -400. The Warriors are currently -8.5 home favorites for Sunday's Game 5.
