Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: NBA Eastern Conference Betting News and Notes

01.19.2015     07:45 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers blog entry.
There’s only one meaningful game remaining in the 2014 football season.  Meanwhile, the NBA has reached the halfway point of the 2014-15 campaign without much fanfare.  In this week’s Wiseguy Report, I’ll be focusing on NBA Notes and Quotes from three pointspread outliers from the Eastern Conference.  How can we make money off these teams as they morph from contenders to pretenders or vice versa?  Read on to find out!

The Atlanta Hawks have been the single most under-reported story of the current NBA season, by a fairly wide margin.  Make no mistake about it – right now, the Hawks are the best team in the Eastern Conference and it’s not even close!  And, as a smaller market team without marquee superstars, Atlanta continues to retain their pointspread value; still very much a bet-on team two full months after their hot streak started!

Hawks head coach Mike Budenholzer was a longtime Greg Popovich assistant in San Antonio, and his team is drawing comparisons to the Spurs on a nightly basis.  Budenholzer’s squad relies, like the defending champs, on ball movement and depth.  The Hawks lead Read more

NBA Handicapping: Knicks get Anthony and Stoudemire back, play Bucks in London

01.15.2015     07:33 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Like the NFL, the NBA likes to do the London thing with the New York Knicks taking on the Milwaukee Bucks this afternoon (Noon PT) at the O2 Arena. And the fans are going to be treated to the return of both Carmelo Anthony and Amare Stoudemire. Riveting stuff. Three of the four regular season games in O2 Arena (20,0000 capacity) went over the total.

NBA Regular Season Games at London's O2 Arena
2013: Brooklyn Nets 127, Atlanta Hawks 110
2013: New York Knicks 102, Detroit Pistons 87
2011: New Jersey Nets 137, Toronto Raptors 136 (3 OT)
2011: New Jersey Nets 116, Toronto Raptors 103

NBA Gambling Alert: LeBron James questionable vs. Phoenix

01.13.2015     08:17 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
LeBron James is listed as a "game-time decision" for tonight's game at Phoenix. In his absence, the Cavaliers went 1-7 SU/ATS and 1-7 O/U.

When asked if he could play against Phoenix, James said he's a "game-time decision." James got work in during Monday's practice and said it felt good to get back on the court. He did admit the rest was good for him, but not for the team.

NBA Handicapping: Oklahoma City's defense hasn't been sharp

01.12.2015     11:12 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Good article on Oklahoma City's defensive struggles of late. The went through a defensive swoon late last year but still finished the season ranked ranked 5th in terms of efficiency (100.1). This season, despite being without Kevin Durant and Russell Wetsbrook, they rank 8th at 100.9. Some of it is had been the competition with recent games vs. Golden State, Phoenix, and Dallas. Add in the fact that they've picked up the pace significantly with Durant and Westbrook back on the court.

“I don’t think they’re the reason why we haven’t played good defense on the road,” Brooks said. “If you think that that’s your opinion. We’ve always focused on areas that we have to get better at as a team, and all five guys are responsible for every defensive possession. We’ve always done that. We win every possession together, and if we don’t have a good possession we do that together also. We always focus on doing it together as a team. We don’t isolate one guy because one guy doesn’t break

NBA Handicapper Free Play: Atlanta Hawks at Detroit Pistons

Atlanta at Detroit +3
Recommendation: Detroit

Two of the hottest teams in the NBA square off tonight in the Motor City. Atlanta is an incredible 20-2 SU in its last 22 games which has them in first place in the Eastern Conference while Detroit is on a 7-0 streak since getting rid of the disrupter, Josh Smith. My clients and I have cashed five straight winners with the Detroit Pistons who are most assuredly a team to ride at the moment while the betting markets remain slow to adjust to the difference in energy and execution. Detroit has seen a major surge in its offense during that stretch with much better ball movement and more balanced scoring. They are playing more as a team right now and it is a direct correlation to their winning streak. Point guard Brandon Jennings has finally assumed the team leader role for and is currently playing like one averaging 22.8 points in Detroit’s last four games and the Pistons are finally getting their two talented big men Greg Monroe and Andre Drummond to elevate their play as both are averaging double doubles during the winning streak. Atlanta has put together a truly outstanding run as well and they Read more

NBA Handicapping: Detroit Pistons have covered five straight

01.05.2015     08:32 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
The Josh Smith-less Detroit Pistons are on fire having won five straight both straight up and against the spread. The competition however is about to take a significant step up in class. First there's a back-to-back at San Antonio and Dallas and then a three-game-in-four-nights swing against Atlanta, Brooklyn, and at Toronto.

"Now we're into probably our toughest stretch of the year," he said. "There's 11 teams right now playing .600 or better and we play four of them in our next five games, three of them on the road so it's tough, but it also makes a win like today and the last few even more crucial to have and it sends us in there with a little bit of confidence so we will have to raise our game to another level to play San Antonio, Dallas, Atlanta, the teams we have coming up.

"I think our guys are looking forward to the challenge now."

NBA Handicapper Free Play: Indiana Pacers at Los Angeles Lakers

Indiana -1 at LA Lakers O/U 202
Recommendation: Over

Over the course of the season, the injury situation for the Indiana Pacers has gradually changed and in recent weeks has gotten them to near 100% except of course for Paul George who’s out for the season. However, just when Indiana began to get accustomed to playing together again, starting PG George Hill went down with a groin injury that will keep him out until Friday. Simultaneously, backup CJ Watson went down with a foot injury and is likely out of the lineup tonight. Their absences once again leave reserve Donald Sloan in charge of the point and that may seem like a significant negative for Indiana but perhaps it’s not when it comes to this contest. These teams played back on December 15 and the Pacers had almost the same nine-man rotation as they’ll have tonight. Difference in that one was Watson started and SF Chris Copeland was the 10th man, tonight he’ll get true bench minutes and Sloan who played 25 minutes in the earlier meeting will play a few extra. Bottom line is Indiana scored 110 points against LA in that game and there’s no reason to think they Read more

Detroit -2.5 at New York O/U 198
Recommendation: Detroit

It’s no coincidence that the Detroit Pistons have reeled off a three-game winning streak following the departure of Josh Smith. The fact the Pistons decided to simply get rid of him for nothing in return tells you all you need to know about the negative impact he had on the team. Smith took bad shots, didn’t play consistent defense, and has been generally disruptive to any of the team’s internal chemistry. Detroit is 3-0 SU and ATS since that move notching double-digit wins (two of those as underdogs) against Indiana, Cleveland and Orlando. Detroit has seen a major surge in its offense during that stretch with much better ball movement and more balanced scoring. In two of those three wins, the Pistons had six players in their rotation notch double-digits. This quote from Stan Van Gundy stands out as a team with much more locker room harmony: “We've played three really good games. Our spirit in there is outstanding.” The same can’t be said about the spirit of the New York Knicks right now. It has been a dismal campaign for first-year head coach Derek Fisher Read more

NBA Gambling Update: Sacramento makes good on promise to be awful

12.30.2014     01:21 PM     Printer Friendly

Bettors can rest easy knowing Ty Corbin will be stalking the side lines for 50 more games as the team inked him through the end of the season. The Kings have been pretty formulaic since Corbin took over. They've won twice in seven tries, haven't covered a single closing pointspread, and are a half point away from being a perfect 7-0 over/under despite not making good on the whole cherry picking thing. And it wouldn't be the Kings without talk of needing to play more defense.

NBA Handicapper Free Play: Minnesota Timberwolves at Denver Nuggets

Minnesota at Denver -10.5 O/U 211
Recommendation: Over

Minnesota's inability to stop teams from scoring (109.0 ppg allowed) is easy to explain once you look at the offensive minded personnel they have to go with night in and night out. The road has only magnified their defensive leaks as their points allowed increases to an average of 115.7 ppg. There should be an abundance of easy scoring opportunities for the Nuggets tonight which figure to break them out of their current scoring slump. Denver has been streaky all season where point production is concerned and their recent six-game stretch where they’ve been held to 96 or less has just as much to do with them as it does the opposing defenses. Rested and eager to get back on track, look for the Nuggets to get into their up-tempo flow and be the fifth consecutive team to shoot 50% or better from the floor against Minnesota. I anticipate the T-Wolves to find success on the offensive end as well, especially with their starting forward duo of Young and Muhammad and their bench which has capable firepower in this matchup. Denver has gone under the total in four straight and three of their last four Read more
