College Basketball Betting Free Play: Syracuse Orange at Pittsburgh Panthers

Syracuse at Pittsburgh -3.5 O/U 130
Recommendation: Over

Historically, Syracuse and Pitt have played plenty of grinders including last year's two meetings that produced 113 and 114 points. But this year's versions are miles away which is why you are seeing a total of 130. News came out earlier this week that the Orange have been banned from the postseason. I don't think much will change, at least in the immediate future. They've been going through the motions for much of the season despite their smoke-and-mirrors 6-3 ACC record. Pitt meanwhile has shown a little more fight but the talent level is way down and as a result, the Panthers are one of the worst teams in the ACC defensively. Despite playing at snail's pace, Pitt has topped this total in eight straight games. And Syracuse is playing at a very fast clip (66.5 poss per game vs. ACC) even with their defensive possessions taking so long because of the zone. As a result of being so poor in the halfcourt, the Orange have been desperate to pick up as many easy buckets as possible. This is not going to be the most aesthetically pleasing game on the card but expect enough points to top this very Read more

College Basketball Gambling: Kansas State's up-and-down season continues

02.05.2015     01:08 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Man, Kansas State is a mess. After starting the season 7-7, the Wildcats reeled off five wins in six games to reposition themselves as a potential NCAA Tournament squad. Less than two weeks later, K-State is off three straight losses and arguably their best player, Marcus Foster, has been suspended. Foster has been in and out of Bruce Weber's doghouse for much of the season and while he's been an obvious distraction to the team, the Wildcats don't bring much to the table without him. Last night, without Foster, the Wildcats managed only 47 points in a 17-point loss to bottom feeder Texas Tech. Something has to give on Saturday as KSU plays host to an equally toxic Texas squad that has dropped four straight.

“Our whole team, we have been plagued from the start of the season by immaturity, by a lack of discipline and a lack of consistency,” Weber told reporters after the game. “That has been on and off the court, all year. I gave them a sheet of paper at the beginning of

College Basketball Betting Free Play: VCU Rams at George Mason Patriots

VCU at George Mason +10 O/U 134
Recommendation: George Mason

Devastating loss for VCU Saturday night when starting senior PG and defensive stalwart Briante Weber tore his ACL, MCL and meniscus. Not having him for the remainder of the season greatly changes the effectiveness of the Rams’ “Havoc” defense and that figures to begin tonight. Weber’s incredible talent for applying on ball pressure and stealing the basketball can’t be duplicated and should make things easier for George Mason’s trio of starting guards to handle VCU’s assortment of presses. Without Weber, the Rams also lose their third leading scorer and primary ball handler. His 4.3-1.7 assist to turnover ratio is outstanding by college basketball standards and sophomore backup JeQuan Lewis will be asked to now fill in as much of the void as possible. In comparison, Lewis who is averaging 17.8 minutes per game has a mediocre assist-to ratio of 2.4-1.8 and only one third as many steals per game as Weber (1.3/3.9). Shaka Smart has already said that he won’t try to reinvent the wheel so there are no style changes expected. George Mason Read more

College Basketball Gambling Update: Moneyburner San Jose State travels to Fresno State

02.04.2015     08:58 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

It's Wednesday and that means the Mountain West is in action and more importantly are favorite awful team, San Jose State. It's been a month since the Spartans have covered a number and bettors didn't have to sweat many of the outcomes. To put it in perspective, during its last seven games, San Jose has been on average a +16.5 underdog. They lost those seven games by an average of 26.5 points. Perhaps some hope tonight as Fresno State marks the only opponent during that stretch in which the Spartans were halfway competitive against. The Bulldogs opened -10 but closed -11/-11.5 and won the game 73-62. For tonight, FSU opened -17.5 at CRIS and is currently -18/-18.5.

College Basketball Handicapping: Ohio State and Purdue sticking to man-to-man defense

02.04.2015     08:09 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
While zone defense has become all of the rage in college basketball, both Ohio State and Purdue have ditched it in favor of playing good old fashion man-to-man. The results have paid dividends, particularly for the Boilermakers who rank No. 1 in the Big Ten in effective field goal defense (43.9%). The total for tonight's game was bet down from 143 to 139.

"I liked our zone early, but right now I'm liking what we're doing defensively in terms of getting our guys understanding what we're attempting to take away," Matta said. "Our ball screen defense is getting better in terms of rotations, and the bigs are getting better at being active."

"When you go play man-to-man, it teaches you to position a little better. Be in help, but you also have to know where your man is."

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Rutgers Scarlet Knights at Illinois Fighting Illini

Rutgers at Illinois -11.5 O/U 126.5
Recommendation: Under

Illinois has managed to survive without the services or Rayvonte Rice (7 games) and Aaron Cosby (3 games), both of whom are suspended for tonight's game. As a result, they've slowed down the tempo some and upped their game on the defensive end of the floor. They've held Maryland, Nebraska, Purdue, and Penn State to less than a point per possession and should continue that trend tonight as Rutgers sports arguably the worst offense in the Big Ten. The Scarlet Knights have netted 50, 51, 51, and 64 points their last four games. The 64-point effort came against Indiana which hasn't played much if any defense this season. Adding to Knights' struggles is the fact that they are playing their third game in six nights and using essentially a five-and-a-half-man rotation. Against the Hoosiers, Rutgers' starting five all played 34 minutes or more. Back on the road, their only option is to slow down the pace of the game and hope to knock down just enough shots to stay within striking distance. Current pointspread suggests we could avoid late fouls which puts us on the under.

College Basketball Gambling: Georgia heads to Kentucky without best player

02.03.2015     07:59 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Huge blow to an already short handed Georgia squad as Marcus Thornton (concussion) is expected to miss his second straight game. Without Thornton, the Bulldogs shot 11-of-50 in Saturday's 17-point loss at South Carolina.

"We missed Marcus' scoring and rebounding for sure, but we missed his leadership more than anything," coach Mark Fox said. "We just seemed disjointed on offense and that was disappointing. We are a team that can't afford to have two or three of our shooters have off nights. We'll need to put this game behind us and get ready for the next one."

College Basketball Handicapping: Ilinois and Rutgers both dealing with issues

02.03.2015     07:51 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Couple things to consider before betting tonight's Rutgers-Illinois game. For starters, the Illini will continue to be without the services of Aaron Cosy and Rayvonte Rice who while cleared to play injury-wise remain suspended due to unspecified reasons.

"They're indefinitely suspended and that’s where it’s at," Groce said Monday at a news conference. "That’s between me and them."

Next, we have Rutgers playing its third game in six days. The most recent, a hard fought loss to Indiana on Saturday, saw five Scarlet Knight players log 34 minutes or more.

“Losing six in a row, you have to keep your kids upbeat,” Jordan said. “Keep them in a positive mood, keep their confidence soaring through the roof. You can’t let them get down on each other or themselves.”

College Basketball Betting: Kansas seeks payback for loss to Iowa State

02.02.2015     08:04 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Kansas is in revenge mode for tonight's home tilt against Iowa State. The Cyclones ran wild in Ames, notching 27 points in transition and 50% from the floor in an 86-81 spread covering (-3.5) win. Oddsmakers have made a big adjustment with the total with the first meeting closing 147 and tonight's game currently at 154.5.

“As of now,” Oubre said. “We owe them.”

“Our guys will be jacked and ready,” Kansas coach Bill Self said. “They made us look foolish many possessions up there in Ames.”

Vanderbilt at Texas A&M -5 O/U 127.5
Recommendation: Texas A&M

Despite winning five straight and covering four of five, there appears to still be a bit of value on Texas A&M as it plays host to Vanderbilt this afternoon. The Aggies are a veteran squad that is on the upswing after a not-so-impressive showing during non-conference play. Wins at LSU and Tennessee really grabbed my attention and last time out, they completely controlled the game in a 10-point win at Auburn. “I knew we were mentally prepared as a team because our approach was different,” said junior guard Danuel House. “Every player was locked in and was in tune to the game and there wasn’t a lot of chatter. We got a taste of winning and we like the taste of success. The scary thing is we worked so hard to get here, let’s not get too complacent and just let it slip from under our feet. Winning on the road just boosts the crowd for when you get home.” Vanderbilt is a very young team and has competed well in most of its SEC games. But you can see the tough losses (six straight) and mid-season fatigue are starting to wear on this Read more
