College Basketball Betting Free Play: East Carolina Pirates at UCF Knights

East Carolina at UCF -4 O/U 139
Recommendation: Under

A few weeks back I wrote up a free play on East Carolina-UCF under 139. Early bettors were able to cash on the under but the game unfortunately landed right on 139 thanks to 51 points the final 10 minutes of the game and a slew of free throws late due to fouls. Prior to that flurry of points, the game was a dead nuts under. At half, UCF led 28-25, and with five minutes to go it was 56-51. These are two under type squads (10-14 O/U combined) with the Knights playing zone and boasting one of the biggest frontcourts in the country and the Pirates also playing zone. Both teams are also mirrors images of one another when it comes to pace (NCAA average) and offensive efficiency (again, NCAA average). The Knights are probably a little better defensively that their numbers suggest. They played two throw-away type games against Stetson and Bethune-Cookman where they traded baskets and everyone got to boost their stats. They also struggled against the high-power offenses of Davidson, Detroit, and SMU. Outside of that, this is a team that has been pretty consistent about holding teams in the 60's. ECU is in Read more

College Basketball Free Betting Pick: Evansville Aces at Illinois State Redbirds

Evansville -5 at Illinois State O/U 138.5
Recommendation: Evansville

The Redbirds are not primed to defend Evansville’s motion offense effectively this evening, bad news against a team that ranks #3 nationally, hitting 52.3% of their shots from the floor this season while leading the Missouri Valley Conference in scoring.  Illinois State is gassed, playing their fifth game in 13 days.  Guard DeVaughn Akoon-Purcell: “It may affect us a little bit offensively because we could be tired chasing all those screens and shooting the gap and all that stuff."

Illinois State has clearly been dealing with fatigue issues in their last few ball games.  They’ve blown double digit leads in each of their last two contests, allowing 49 second half points to Indiana State and 45 second half points to Southern Illinois.  Two different Redbirds set career highs in points against Southern Illinois Head coach Dan Muller: “Fatigue is causing us not only to give up some baskets, but we've fouled down the stretch in both games way too much.  We've played guys a lot of minutes in the second half and last 10 minutes Read more

College Basketball Handicapping: Utah looks to reverse losing trend vs. Oregon

01.14.2016     07:47 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Oregon has had Utah's number of late having won seven of the eight meetings (5-2-1 ATS) since the Utes joined the PAC-12 including last year's 67-64 victory in the conference tournament. Also note that the last four meetings have gone under the total by an average of 10 points per game. The Utes are currently -5.5 home favorites with a total of 142.5 for tonight.

"They've got all their other guys besides Joseph Young back, and it's been a long time since we've beat Oregon," coach Larry Krystkowiak said. "They've got great balance with their team, they always defend. And they're truly one of the teams that isn't slowed up by the altitude, I remember from their last game here."

College Basketball Betting Free Pick: San Diego State Aztecs at Colorado State Rams

San Diego State -3 at Colorado State O/U 138
Recommendation: San Diego State

San Diego State makes the trip to Fort Collins tonight in a critical Mountain West showdown. The Aztecs are tied atop the Mountain West standings at 3-0 in conference play and the Rams are just a step back at 2-1. CSU lost its opener at Boise who is also tied in first in the conference but has since put together back-to-back one-point victories. The Rams are led by senior guard John Gillon who has come on of late and is one of the nation’s best free throw shooters at over 92%. Defensively, however, CSU has struggled with an adjusted efficiency in the bottom half of the nation and a steal pct. among the lowest in the country. The San Diego State offense should be able to capitalize on the defensive shortcomings of Colorado State. SDSU is mostly known for all defense and no offense and the statistics bear that out. The Aztecs entered Mountain West play ranked last in the conference in scoring (65.0 ppg), shooting (41.4%), assists (9.8), and second to last in 3-point shooting (31.2%) and turnover margin (-1.1). That’s starting to change. The Aztecs scored 67 points Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Houston Cougars at Cincinnati Bearcats

Houston at Cincinnati -10 O/U 137.5
Recommendation: Under

After dropping its AAC opener to Temple, 77-70, Cincinnati head coach Mike Cronin made it abundantly clear that his team was going to start guarding or else heads were going to roll. In typical Cinci fashion, they responded, and done so in a big way. Over their last three games, the Bearcats have held the opposition to 57, 59, and 51. And one of those games was on the highway against an SMU squad that has hung 80+ on a routine basis this season. Tonight's opponent, Houston, is also getting more defensive of late having allowed 54 ppg in three AAC wins. And for both squads, the pace of their games has slowed considerably with only one of seven contests topping 65 possessions and tonight's posted total of 137.5. Also note that thus far, the AAC ranks near the bottom nationally in free throw rate as we've seen a number of league games have that 2014-15 "feel" to it with low scores and low possessions. And while we use last year's results with a grain of salt, it's worth noting that both meetings failed to top 122 points. Appears that both teams' non-conference results are still Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Bucknell Bison at Lehigh Mountain Hawks

Bucknell -1.5 at Lehigh O/U 154
Recommendation: Bucknell

Patriot League play has a ray of sunshine for Bucknell which has steamrolled their first four opponents by nearly 21 points per game. The Bison played admirably against the better non-conference teams they faced as well so perhaps it’s no surprise that the step down in class to league play has seen them flourish thus far. At North Carolina State, Bucknell shot 51.6% and lost just 99-86 and they also hung within eight of ACC member Wake Forest (lost 90-82) and lost by just four to Penn State 62-58. The high octane, 94-foot style of Bucknell has seen them become vulnerable on the defensive end allowing 1.03 points per possession. However, with four of the top six in their rotation shooting between 44-52.5% from the field, they’ve been able to easily outscore league opposition. Lehigh does not subscribe to the up-tempo philosophy but they’ve been dragged into it multiple times this season by teams who prefer running. The situation here of a home, conference game for Lehigh does suggest that they should somewhat be able to control the pace but not sure they can prevent Bucknell Read more

College Basketball Betting: UNLV parts ways with head coach Dave Rice

01.11.2016     08:42 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
After losing five of its last six, UNLV decided what better time than the present to get rid of head coach Dave Rice. The Rebels had the talent and defense to not only compete but win what looks to be a watered down Mountain West Conference this year. But an inability to hold leads and win close games has them 0-3 in league play with three losses by a combined six points. Now, the team will look to assistant Todd Simon to help save a sinking ship. Simon's "promotion" however has been viewed by some as questionable, especially with veteran Max Good a part of the staff. Not much turnaround time with the Rebels playing host to New Mexico tomorrow evening.

UNLV at Wyoming +6.5 O/U 134
Recommendation: Wyoming

You have to be pretty bold to take UNLV as a medium-sized favorite on the road based on its pedigree. And what I mean by "pedigree" is a consistent inability to get out of its own way. This pretty much sums up who UNLV has become throughout the Dave Rice era: "It comes down to mental toughness," Rice said. "Mental toughness to make physical plays down the stretch that have to be made to win a college basketball game on the road. We put ourselves in position to win the game and gave it away. We've just got to count on our guys to make better plays than that." Talent wise, the Rebels could very easily be 12-4 and 2-0 in Mountain West play. Instead, they limp into a trip to Wyoming at 9-6 and 0-2 in league play. The Cowboys are in somewhat of rebuilding mode and sport one of the youngest teams in the country. It's a team that won't impress you visually but one that will undoubtedly get better as the season progresses. And in supporting the Pokes, it's not like we are asking them to do something that have yet to accomplish. Yes, they are 8-8 but wins over New Mexico State Read more

College Basketball Handicapping: St. Mary's the last remaining undefeated team ATS

01.08.2016     08:42 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The pointspread darlings of the college basketball season thus far have been the St. Mary's Gaels who have covered every lined game (12-0 ATS). It's a very young squad with six underclassmen in their rotation and no seniors. Despite that, they've put up some sick offensive numbers (63.4% eFG, 47.1% 3-pt., and 58.5% 2-pt.). They've also held nine opponents to 60 or less. SMC's schedule hasn't been all that challenging and they are projected to be favored in every regular season game the remainder of the way with the exception of a late February trip to Gonzaga. Up next, a trip to Pepperdine on Saturday. The Gaels are expected to be around an 8-point road favorite.

College Basketball Gambling: Purdue not pleased with offensive efficiency

01.07.2016     07:16 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Purdue may have arguably the best defense in the country but head coach Matt Painter ain't happy. Last week, the Boilermakers ran out to a 37-20 halftime lead against Iowa but proceeded to allowed 50 in the second half. It resulted in a 70-63 home loss. Painter said that it wasn't so much poor defense as it was poor offense that played a role in the meltdown. Purdue plays host to Michigan tonight.

"Our offense has been poor,"  Painter said. "We haven't taken care of the basketball and our shot selection hasn’t been great. Any time you're in transition more and you can’t set your defense, you're not going to be be as efficient."

"We had guys that didn’t play with poise; didn’t show their experience," Painter said. "Nothing that happened in the second half didn’t happen in the first half.  When there's something that needs to be adjusted, you make that adjustment at halftime. When you've held somebody to 20 points and
