College Basketball Handicapping: ACC pace of play remains slow

02.07.2014     06:53 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Article on the slow tempo of ACC play this year. Two-thirds of the league is averaging less than 63 possessions per game and three squads are below 60.

“It’s whatever a coach feels comfortable with,” said North Carolina coach Roy Williams, whose club is the lone ACC representative in the tempo top 20. “I want to play a lot faster than we’re playing right now, it frustrates me that I can’t get us playing faster, yet the other team has a great deal to say about that. When they want to spend more time with shot clock, it does make it difficult. If it’s better players, higher-caliber teams, it’s harder to get them out of their pace.”

ACC Conference Play Tempo - 2014/13
Boston College - 61.1/63.5
Clemson - 58.2/62.0
Duke - 62.5/67.7
Florida State - 61.8/63/3
Georgia Tech - 64.8/67.0

College Basketball Betting Free Play: St. Mary's Gaels at Loyola Marymount Lions

St. Mary's -5 at Loyola Marymount
Recommendation: St. Mary's

We’ve got a maximum motivational spot for the road favorite here.  And St. Mary’s is matched up against a home underdog that isn’t playing any defense, has lost whatever limited confidence they have and hasn’t been covering pointspreads all year.

The Gaels hadn’t played on the road in nearly a month when they travelled to San Diego last Thursday. The Toreros slowdown style really frustrated St. Mary’s as they were held to a season low 43 points.  Then BYU went uptempo on St Mary’s on Saturday and blew the Gaels out of the gym – a quality foe at the top of their game.  St. Mary’s is too good to suffer through extended losing streaks in this very mediocre WCC conference; primed to hammer somebody tonight.

And Max Good’s Lions are an easy team to hammer.  St. Mary’s beat them 89-61 just two weeks ago; dominating the game in every possible way.  The Gaels won both meetings last year by double digit margins as well.  A two game losing streak ensures full focus against a Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Washington Huskies at Utah Utes

Washington at Utah -9 O/U 141
Recommendation: Utah

I used Utah in a very similar spot two weeks ago as a Sportsmemo free play when they returned home off multiple road losses and responded in a big way by blowing out USC 84-66 as 10.5-point home favorites. They should be sitting on a good effort again as they return home following three straight losses on the highway at Arizona, Arizona State and Colorado. They lost those games by a combined 17 points including a tough OT loss vs. Colorado. The Utes are a dominant 14-1 at home thanks to 50.3% FG and 36.2% from the perimeter. Delon Wright leads the team with 16.1 ppg but Jordan Loveridge and Brandon Taylor are two other viable scoring options. Utah has also performed very well defensively at home holding foes to 40.8% FG and just 31.9% from deep.

Washington is very inconsistent – fully capable of hanging tough with Arizona and beating the likes of Colorado and Oregon but also capable of getting Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Murray State Racers at Belmont Bruins

Murray State at Belmont -6.5 O/U 147.5
Recommendation: Over

I've watched Murray State play on a couple of occasions this season and came away impressed with how aggressive they are offensively. Not only do they push the pace but they put five players on the court that can score a number of ways. The Racers have four guards who shoot between 34 and 41 percent from three and forwards Jarvis Williams and Jonathan Fairell combine to hit over 60% from the floor. Nine games in the OVC season, and Murray is averaging an incredibly efficient 1.16 points per possession. Tonight's opponent, Belmont, scores at an identical clip, and like Murray, the Bruins will look to push the pace as well. Defensively, Belmont and Murray both allowed less than a point per possession last season but have taken a step back. The Bruins allow 1.07 ppp and while Murray ranks at the top of the OVC at 0.99, I don't expect they'll match that number on the road against arguably the best Read more

College Basketball Handicapping: Georgia tries to snap three-game losing streak vs. LSU

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
LSU -2.5 at Georgia O/U 137

After starting SEC play 4-1 (two OT victories), Georgia has lost three straight and according the Mark Fox, lacks confidence and leadership.

“This has never been a group that’s had great confidence, and you have to be mindful of that as a coach,” Fox said. “They’ve also won some big games and beat some good teams this year and they have to be mindful of how that happened. If you look at the mistakes we made last week, some of it was out of our control but some of it was much in our control. I’m really looking at both sides of it and looking at it in a way that gives us a chance to win.”

“With [Kentavious Caldwell-Pope] leaving, who’s the guy that’s going to be your leading scorer? The guy Read more

College Basketball Gambling Update: Richmond loses leading scorer Lindsay for season

02.05.2014     01:26 PM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Bad news for the Richmond Spiders as leading scorer Cedrick Lindsay has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a knee injury. Linsday was one of only two seniors on the roster (fellow senior Derrick Williams left for personal reasons) and led the team in minutes (34.6 per game). The Spiders are 1.5-point home favorites over St. Bonaventure.

College Basketball Handicapping: Same season revenge spots for Wednesday

02.05.2014     01:19 PM     ICC     Printer Friendly
Submitted by ICC

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
For anybody that values same season revenge spots, I listed the teams on tonight's card that fit that profile. By no means do you want to blindly bet these squads. You still have to handicap the game, factoring in matchups, injuries, line value, etc. But it is worth noting this angle on a nightly basis now that we are into February and a lot of these games have more meaning.

Nebraska (at Michigan) – Wolverines won in Lincoln, 71-70.
Hofstra (at Northeastern)
Richmond (vs. St. Bonaventure) – Spiders lost Cedrick Lindsay (knee) for the year.
Buffalo (vs. Ball State)
Eastern Michigan (at Akron)
Wright State (vs. Youngstown) – Penguins won first meeting, 68-67.
Illinois Chicago (at UW-Green Bay)
Evansville (vs. Missouri State)
Indiana State (vs. Wichita State) – Shockers won first meeting by 20.
Purdue (vs. Minnesota)
Stanford (at California) – Golden Bears off a win over No. 1 Arizona.
Houston (vs. Louisville)
Texas A&M (vs. Mississippi State – Bulldogs won first meeting in overtime.
Utah State (vs. Nevada)
Air Force (vs. Fresno State)
Boise State (vs. San Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Auburn Tigers at South Carolina Gamecocks

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Auburn at South Carolina -2.5 O/U 146
Recommendation: South Carolina

Auburn hasn’t won a road game this year, and they’re riding a 1-8 ATS streak on the highway dating back to last year.  Tony Barbee’s squad lacks veteran depth, and they’ve been abysmal defensively once they leave the friendly confines of Auburn Arena; particularly on the perimeter where they’ve allowed opponents to shoot 40 percent from three point land.

And Auburn is a tad bit fat and happy off back-to-back home wins, their first two wins in SEC play.  Even after those wins, the Tigers are still just 4-13 ATS in their last 17 against conference foes; a consistent pointspread underachiever.  And the Tigers biggest weakness offensively – turnovers in bunches; with an 0.63 assist-to-turnover ratio on the road this year – plays right into the Gamecocks defensive strength.

Sure, South Carolina doesn’t Read more

College Basketball Gambling Alert: Richmond could be down two senior starters

St. Bonaventure at Richmond pk

Lots of stuff going on with the Richmond Spiders who play host to St. Bonaventure tonight. It was recently announced that Derrick Williams has left the team for personal reasons. Williams started 21 of 22 games but was slowly being phased out of the rotation due to the emergence of other players. Guard Cedrick Lindsay (18.3 ppg) is doubtful with an undisclosed issue/injury. He was visibly limping in the second half of last weekend's game at VCU. Note that Williams and Lindsay are the Spiders' only seniors.

Wichita State was unable to leave yesterday for its game at Indiana State due to weather. The Shockers will instead fly to Indianapolis today, drive to Terre Haute (80 min.), and play this evening at 7 pm local. The undefeated Shockers travel to Northern Iowa on Saturday.
