College Basketball Betting Free Play: USC Trojans at Stanford Cardinal

USC at Stanford -14 O/U 147
Recommendation: Under

Market seems to have created an opportunity by betting USC-Stanford four points over the total. I can understand the thought behind it with USC's willing to play fast and Stanford's offensive prowess and lackluster defense of late. But the situation suggests this won't be a pick-up game. The Cardinals have lost back-to-back games and with the dreaded "elevation" road trip upcoming, this becomes an absolute must-win. The first meeting was a perfect offensive storm with a lot of pace (146 possessions), threes (15), and turnovers (28). The end result was 154 points. But note that the closing total in that contest was 132. Less than a month later it's 15 points higher leaving little to no margin for error. In the end, USC's below average offensive efficiency, Stanford's expected focus/energy level, and a potential double-digit margin late make a play on the under worthy of a wager.

Syracuse at Pittsburgh -3.5 O/U 130
Recommendation: Over

Historically, Syracuse and Pitt have played plenty of grinders including last year's two meetings that produced 113 and 114 points. But this year's versions are miles away which is why you are seeing a total of 130. News came out earlier this week that the Orange have been banned from the postseason. I don't think much will change, at least in the immediate future. They've been going through the motions for much of the season despite their smoke-and-mirrors 6-3 ACC record. Pitt meanwhile has shown a little more fight but the talent level is way down and as a result, the Panthers are one of the worst teams in the ACC defensively. Despite playing at snail's pace, Pitt has topped this total in eight straight games. And Syracuse is playing at a very fast clip (66.5 poss per game vs. ACC) even with their defensive possessions taking so long because of the zone. As a result of being so poor in the halfcourt, the Orange have been desperate to pick up as many easy buckets as possible. This is not going to be the most aesthetically pleasing game on the card but expect enough points to top this very Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Rutgers Scarlet Knights at Illinois Fighting Illini

Rutgers at Illinois -11.5 O/U 126.5
Recommendation: Under

Illinois has managed to survive without the services or Rayvonte Rice (7 games) and Aaron Cosby (3 games), both of whom are suspended for tonight's game. As a result, they've slowed down the tempo some and upped their game on the defensive end of the floor. They've held Maryland, Nebraska, Purdue, and Penn State to less than a point per possession and should continue that trend tonight as Rutgers sports arguably the worst offense in the Big Ten. The Scarlet Knights have netted 50, 51, 51, and 64 points their last four games. The 64-point effort came against Indiana which hasn't played much if any defense this season. Adding to Knights' struggles is the fact that they are playing their third game in six nights and using essentially a five-and-a-half-man rotation. Against the Hoosiers, Rutgers' starting five all played 34 minutes or more. Back on the road, their only option is to slow down the pace of the game and hope to knock down just enough shots to stay within striking distance. Current pointspread suggests we could avoid late fouls which puts us on the under.

Vanderbilt at Texas A&M -5 O/U 127.5
Recommendation: Texas A&M

Despite winning five straight and covering four of five, there appears to still be a bit of value on Texas A&M as it plays host to Vanderbilt this afternoon. The Aggies are a veteran squad that is on the upswing after a not-so-impressive showing during non-conference play. Wins at LSU and Tennessee really grabbed my attention and last time out, they completely controlled the game in a 10-point win at Auburn. “I knew we were mentally prepared as a team because our approach was different,” said junior guard Danuel House. “Every player was locked in and was in tune to the game and there wasn’t a lot of chatter. We got a taste of winning and we like the taste of success. The scary thing is we worked so hard to get here, let’s not get too complacent and just let it slip from under our feet. Winning on the road just boosts the crowd for when you get home.” Vanderbilt is a very young team and has competed well in most of its SEC games. But you can see the tough losses (six straight) and mid-season fatigue are starting to wear on this Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Pittsburgh Panthers at Virginia Tech Hokies

Pittsburgh at Virginia Tech +4.5
Recommendation: Virginia Tech

Virginia Tech has endured a brutal scheduling stretch with Louisville, North Carolina, Notre Dame, and Virginia over the span of the last two weeks. They were handled rather easily in three of the four but showed some fight last time out with a three-point home loss to rival Virginia. Tonight, Pitt comes to town, and it marks a huge step down in class. The Panthers are still living on reputation because the product on the floor is very flawed. Long noted for being a top-tier defense, Pitt currently ranks 15th in the ACC in defensive efficiency vs. league foes. They also struggle to shoot from the outside (26.7% 3-point) and will almost assuredly see some form of zone from the Hokies. Nearly half of VT's games have been decided by three points or less meaning they are capable of competing but because of their youth have had a difficult time getting over the hump. This marks the best opportunity for an ACC win to-date and the bonus is we're catching +4.5. Take the home underdog.

College Basketball Betting Free Play: TCU Horned Frogs at West Virginia Mountaineers

TCU at West Virginia -9.5 O/U 131.5
Recommendation: Over

After hitting 145 points and 142 possessions, I see no reason we'll see that significant of change to the West Virginia-TCU rematch. The Mountaineers are a dead nuts over team having scored 72 or more in all but one conference game. The lone time they were held in check was last time out on the road against an elite Texas defense. But the one constant to WVU games is pace. They've topped 140 possessions in all five of their Big XII games. TCU is slow and has trouble scoring but keep in mind who they've faced. Outside of WVU, they played Kansas State, Baylor, Texas Tech, and Texas. Those four teams prefer a slower game and/or play really good defense. The Horned Frogs will have a difficult time controlling tempo in Morgantown as the Mountaineers will press and continually push the tempo. This is a situation where the home favorite is likely to help "pull along" the outclassed underdog. If West Virginia can score in the low 70's, we're in a good position to cash a ticket on the over.

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Providence Friars at Creighton Blue Jays

Providence at Creighton -2 O/U 132
Recommendation: Under

Providence head coach Ed Cooley has always preached defense first and when the Friars are at their best, the stop unit grades out as above average. But the problem has been consistency: guard well for two games and then lay an egg. Earlier this season, Providence allowed 75 to Marquette and bounced back with back-to-back strong defensive showings against Butler and Georgetown. Last time out, the Friars allowed 83 to St. John's, including 10-of-17 from 3-point land. I would expect a far better showing against Creighton who through five Big East games has really struggled to score (0.96 ppp). The Blue Jays (0-5 vs. Big East) have had some game efforts of late with one-point losses to Seton Hall and Marquette. Considering what they lost from last year's team and the competitiveness of the Big East, it's not shocking to see them struggle. Their league games have all been fairly slow in terms of pace including the first meeting vs. Providence in which the Friars won 65-53 (63 possessions). Should be a competitive game which leaves the door open for a late second half lull. With the total currently Read more

College Basketball Handicapping: Quick hitters on Saturday's games

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Here are some quick hitters on this weekend's marquee college basketball matchups.

Utah at Arizona - After a home friendly schedule to start PAC-12 play, the Utes took care of business last night at Arizona State (76-59). Arizona rolled over an injury-riddled Colorado squad. The total for this one should come out somewhere in the mid-120's. It'll feature two of the top 10 defensive teams in the country in terms of efficiency. In the three other instances where they has happened this season we saw very limited scoring: Kentucky vs. Louisville (108 points), San Diego State vs. Utah (102 points), and Arizona vs. San Diego State (120 points).

Kansas at Iowa State - Would expect a lot of pace and scoring in this matchup based on last year's three meetings. The Jayhawks won both regular season meetings but the Cyclones got revenge in the Big XII Tournament. Those three contests averaged 152 possessions and 165 points. Oddsmakers have been adjusting high totals toward the under so expect this one to open around 146-147.

Ohio State at Iowa - The Hawkeyes finally got their offense going with 77 points last time Read more

Miami (FL) at Duke -15 O/U 141.5
Recommendation: Under

I mentioned on the podcast that this appears to be a good situation to step in and play the under. Unlike last year, Miami has more players and as a result has scored more and at times play a faster tempo. But Jim Larranaga is a smart coach and knows that trading baskets on the road vs. Duke is not a recipe for success. And let's not forget that the Hurricanes are still fairly slow, ranking 279th in terms of adjusted tempo. Duke meanwhile should be sitting on a pretty good defensive effort. Last time out they allowed 87 to NC State and watched the Wolf Pack hit a ridiculous 10-of-16 from three. Does that mean Duke is a bad defensive team? No. They're not great but in their previous six games vs. top 100 teams, the held the opposition to 63 ppg. And at home off of that showing, you can bet Coach K emphasized plenty of defenses in practice the last two days. Adding to it is that the Hurricanes aren't a great offensive team. They scored only 99 points combined in home losses to Green Bay and Eastern Kentucky and will likely struggle to top 60 points in this affair as we look to play it under the Read more
