College Basketball Betting Free Play: Auburn Tigers vs. Kentucky Wildcats

Auburn vs. Kentucky -23.5 O/U 137
Recommendation: Over

It's unlikely you'll see 185 combined points again but I have a difficult time envisioning Auburn doing much to contain Kentucky this afternoon. I've noted multiple times that Calipari wants his Wildcats to play fast and score points but when you're facing the likes of Florida, it can be difficult to create much flow. You can create flow vs. Auburn with open looks, high percentage shots, and plenty of transition opportunities. Let's give Bruce Pearl credit, not for anything he's done strategically, but getting his kid in the right frame of mind to compete -- a difficult task after such a dismal regular season. The Tigers are in this spot in large part because they've managed to defend having held their first three tournament opponents to less than a point per possession. That may not seem impressive but consider that they did it only twice during conference regular season play. I think that Pearl is going to try to play it more conservatively on offense, maybe try to take the air out of the ball some, but that's not going to work long assuming the Tigers will be down by double digits for much of Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Wisconsin Badgers at Ohio State Buckeyes

Wisconsin at Ohio State
Recommendation: Ohio State +1.5 First Half

I don't buy into team's playing "extra hard" to earn a certain seed in the conference tournament or in the case of Wisconsin, the Big Dance. The Badgers already have the Big Ten regular season crown wrapped up and as a result there is talk about them earning a No. 1 seed come next week's Selection Sunday. I'm sure they'd take it but it'll have no bearing on the outcome of today's game at Ohio State. Visually, Wisconsin was the best team in the Big Ten but I go back to their favorable schedule with getting to play Michigan State, Maryland, Purdue, and today's opponent, Ohio State, only once. A few weeks ago, against a rested and ready Maryland squad, the Badgers were outplayed throughout as the Terrapins won 59-53 in College Park. Not getting as juicy of a price (Maryland was as high as +6) but still catching points with a reputable home team and home court. Should be a great environment with the game being televised nationally on CBS as well as OSU honoring its seniors. We'll look to use that positive energy on a first half play with the home side.

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Stanford Cardinal at Arizona Wildcats

Stanford at Arizona
Recommendation: First Half Over 66

Arizona looked like a well-oiled machine in Thursday's PAC-10 regular season title clinching win over Cal. The Wildcats fell one point short of 100 in the 99-60 route. There's no reason to think that UA's desire to push pace and score won't continue against a reeling Stanford squad playing its second road game in three days. The Cardinal had two chances to pick up much-needed resume building wins against Oregon and Arizona State and faltered both times. The inability to step up when needed has been a staple throughout Johnny Dawkins’ tenure. A win here, though very unlikely, would put them back in the NCAA Tournament picture so perhaps we see some fight. In the first meeting, there was plenty of pace (146 possessions) and points (171). While it'll be tough to top that offensive output, I project the pace to be fairly quick throughout. With perhaps less intensity, both teams playing on short rest, this has all the makings of a loose, up-and-down affair. The concern is should Arizona lead big late, the game has the potential to bog down. To avoid that, I think the best angle here is to step Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Ole Miss Rebels at Alabama Crimson Tide

Ole Miss +2 at Alabama O/U 131.5
Recommendation: Ole Miss

Not trusting of Alabama in the role of a favorite even when you eliminate the issues of not being with starters Shannon Hale and Ricky Tarrant. Tarrant has been out from nearly a month but the recent loss of Hale suggests the Crimson Tide could have a real difficult time scoring the basketball. There's also the issue of Alabama's failures when asked to step up in class. Of their seven SEC wins, only one (Texas A&M back on Jan. 6) came against a high power rated opponent. Of late, it's been very formulaic: beat who your supposed to beat and lose against "better" competition. Ole Miss enters off back-to-back losses and is in desperate need a good performance. The Rebels have proven capable on the highway with five SEC wins away from Oxford including at Arkansas and Florida. In the end, there isn't a huge difference between these two squads despite Alabama not being all that visually appealing. But with injury concerns and asked to lay points, I see Ole Miss as the right side tonight.

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Mississippi State Gamecocks at South Carolina Gamecocks

Mississippi State +9 at South Carolina O/U 122.5
Recommendation: Mississippi State

Not sure why South Carolina is laying this many points against a very comparable opponent. The Gamecocks have been in when's-the-offseason mode for much of the last month. They scored an unimpressive five-point win over Missouri and beat a Georgia squad that was without its starting point guard. Unlike Mississippi State, there were expectations placed on Frank Martin's group after a 9-3 non-conference mark. But nothing has gone right as the Gamecocks can't shoot, they don't always play with effort, and Martin's perpetual foul mood has clearly worn on the players. The one thing I know I'm going to get with Rick Ray's squad is effort. Since getting blown out in its first two SEC games, Mississippi State has been outclassed only twice: at Arkansas and vs. Kentucky -- both of which perfectly understandable. The rest of their games were five wins and losses by 4, 6, 6, 4, 6, and 4. This line is based on a power rating from two months ago. South Carolina hit as high as 25th in Ken Pom and has dropped to only 70th. Mississippi State bottomed out at 245th and had slowly Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Texas Longhorns at West Virginia Mountaineers

Texas +4.5 at West Virginia O/U 136.5
Recommendation: Texas

Going to step in play Texas at +4.5 (a few +5's available) as it heads to West Virginia this evening. Some bettors will undoubtedly point toward the revenge angle (UT won 77-50 in Austin) and the Longhorns' spotty play of late (back-to-back losses). But at the current price there is some value on the underdog as WVU enters off back-to-back upsets and doesn't match up particularly well against UT's front court. While Texas has plenty of weakness -- most notably a lack of consistency -- they do defend well in the paint. In their last two losses, Oklahoma and Iowa State shot a combined 28-of-77, 36.3% from two. What did them in what allowing 20 three-pointers. But unlike the Sooners and Cyclones, the Mountaineers don't have much of any outside shooting prowess. On the season, they've connected on only 30.9% of their three-point attempts. Another angle to consider is WVU's element of surprise, or lack thereof in this spot. In five "second meets" in Big XII pay, the Mountaineers have covered only once; against bottom feeder Texas Tech. Teams clearly know what to expect and while Texas Read more

West Virginia at Oklahoma State -4 O/U 134.5
Recommendation: Under

Oklahoma State has been really consistent when it comes to pace this season regardless of opponent. In their last two games, against TCU and Iowa State,  there were 124 and 126 possessions respectively. That's very important when we consider how different both those squads are on the offensive end. When the Cowboys faced Big XII squads that play up-tempo (Iowa State, Kansas, Oklahoma) five of those six games went under the total. Those totals ranged from the mid-130’s to mid-140’s. No matter what the opposition, it’s hard to reach that mark when you prefer a slow pace, fail to average over a point per possession, and grade out as above average defensively. Statistically, West Virginia is the fastest team in the Big XII because they press and their games often feature an endless amount of free throws. But this is a different team on the road as three of their last four road games failed to top 130 (127, 124, 123, and 138 against Iowa State). Very important game for both sides, particularly Oklahoma State who desperately needs a victory after back-to-back losses. Read more
