College Basketball Betting Free Play: Detroit Titans at Oregon Ducks

Detroit at Oregon -10.5 O/U 151
Recommendation: Over

Expecting to see a lot of pace in tonight's Oregon-Detroit matchup. The Ducks hung 107 in their opener against Coppin State and while the Titans are poised to put up much more resistance, we're still likely to see in the range of 150 possessions, which makes it reasonable to think the home side reaches the mid-80's. Detroit is a team that has historically been willing to play at a fast clip under head coach Ray McCallum. The Titans struggled offensively last year without the services of McCallum's son, Ray. Jr., who is now in the NBA. With a number of guards now a year more experienced plus in influx of transfers, this is a squad that should improve on last year's dismal 1.00 ppp. The biggest thing I noticed with Detroit is not just a willingness but a desire to play fast. Last year, in games against up-tempo Toledo, NC State, Oakland we saw scores of 158, 166, 162, and 143, and 154 in regulation. Oregon meanwhile has a strong track record of high scoring games in the non-conference with 10 of its last 13 dating back to last season topping 150 points in regulation. The games that didn't were all Read more

NCAA Tournament Betting Free Play: UConn Huskies vs. Michigan State Spartans

UConn +5.5 vs. Michigan State O/U 139
Recommendation: UConn

Outside of the first 10 minutes of the game in which Michigan State was averaging a ridiculous 1.45 points per possession, the Spartans had a very difficult time not only scoring on Virginia but pulling away hence the final two-point margin. UConn doesn't have UVA's defensive acumen but this team is guarding and rebounding much better than their overall season numbers show. And like UVA's x-factor of tremendous defense, UConn's Ryan Boatright and Shabazz Napier provide the key to keeping within striking distance of the Spartans. I also like the emphasis UConn has placed on getting to the free throw line with 70 attempts and 86% makes in its three NCAA Tournament games thus far. Michigan State has also been effective at getting to and knocking down free throws but I'm looking for aspects in which the Huskies can potentially match or outperform the favorite. Size, athleticism, offense, and defense – the Spartans have some advantages but 5.5 points more than the Huskies? Sagarin and Ken Pom both have this game less than -3 while oddsmakers and the betting markets feel present MSU is far Read more

NCAA Tournament Betting Free Play: Oregon Ducks vs. Wisconsin Badgers

Oregon +5.5 vs. Wisconsin O/U 145.5
Recommendation: Oregon

Oregon is clearly playing its best basketball of the season having won 9 of 10 heading into today's matchup vs. Wisconsin. Defensively and effort-wise the Ducks are finally performing up to their capabilities and coupled with an already stellar offense, this is all of a sudden a very complete outfit. They managed to hold BYU to under 1 point per possession the first round – only the fifth time all season that had happened to the Cougs. Wisconsin didn't have much trouble getting past American in its first round game but things won’t come as easy against the Ducks. The Badgers do a lot of things extremely well – particularly on offense – but defensively, they've been exposed on more than a few occasions. I go back to the Big Ten Tournament when the Badgers allowed Michigan State to run wild (83 points, 1.32 ppp). Also note that in their respective league play, Oregon was actually better (1.03 ppp allowed) than Wisconsin (1.05 ppp allowed) from a defensive efficiency standpoint. Obviously the Big Dance is going to bring out UW's best on the defensive end, but I think Read more

NCAA Tournament Betting Free Play: Tulsa Golden Hurricane vs. UCLA Bruins

Tulsa vs. UCLA -9 O/U 147.5
Recommendation: Over

Tulsa is no stranger to high scoring affairs having played games well above tonight's total against the likes of Creighton, Oklahoma, and Maryland. And not only were the points there but the pace as well with 74, 75, and 74 possessions, respectively. I'm confident that we'll see a similar output pace-wise in tonight’s first round matchup vs. UCLA. The reason why this total is in a respectable range is because statistically, both squads play above average defense. Tulsa allowed only 0.90 points per possession in C-USA play – and amazingly, hasn't allowed more than 1.00 ppp since January 25. But while the league does feature a few decent offensive outfits, UCLA is on another level. The Bruins boast one of the most efficient offenses in the country AND they can do it by playing at a swift pace (70 possessions per game vs. PAC-12). My only concern is Tulsa not being able to knock down a few threes (32.5%). If Tulsa can find its way to the upper 60's, we'll be in business for an over-the-total winner.

NCAA Tournament Betting Preview: Initial thoughts on the Midwest Region

The NCAA Tournament field is set and like most bettors, Sunday night is spent skimming through the first round matchups and forming initial thoughts and opinions. Keep in mind that a lot can change leading up to the start of the tournament – most notably where oddsmakers set the lines and where the betting markets drives said lines. For Monday's blog, I'll share my initial thoughts and opinions with our readers on all four regions.

Midwest
The Midwest features three of the four play-in winners with Cal Poly/Texas Southern taking on no. 1 seed Wichita State, Xavier-NC State vs. Saint Louis, and Iowa-Tennessee vs. UMass... I think it helps Kansas State that it got bounced in the first round of the Big XII Tournament whereas Kentucky played three games in three days and expended a ton of energy in the 61-60 SEC title game loss vs. Florida... No clue on who will emerge out of the three-team pod of SLU/NC State/Xavier. The Billikens seem a bit overrated and have trouble scoring at times, NC State is ultra-young, and Xavier is as flighty as they come... Of course the selection committee was going to pit a former Louisville assistant up against the Read more

West
As much as I love the Big Sky I can't even recall the last time they were competitive in the Big Dance. Weber State hasn't faced a defense even remotely close to that of Arizona. The closest was UCLA who trucked Weber, 83-60, in Los Angeles... I just got done looking at Gonzaga's resume and man, they didn't beat anyone. They lost to tournament teams Dayton, Kansas State, and Memphis and went 2-1 vs. a so-so BYU squad. That said, Mark Few vs. Travis Ford is a mismatch. I seem to remember Dana Altman and Oregon running OSU off the court in last year's tourney... Tough matchup for Oklahoma's young squad having to take on very experienced and talented North Dakota State. The Sooners losing in the first round of the Read more

East
Gotta be able to score at an efficient rate to compete with Virginia and first round opponent Coastal Carolina is one of the few teams in the tournament to average less than a point per possession (0.97). Pretty good blueprint of what to expect with Coastal losing to Clemson, 69-40... If you bet the Memphis-George Washington game, expect more than few missed free throws with both teams at 65% on the season... Harvard isn't your typical Ivy League team in that the Crimson has some decent athletes. They were only -2 in rebounding vs. UConn but shot 11-of-34, 32% from 2-point in the 61-56 loss... Delaware competed well against Villanova (84-80 loss), Notre Dame (80-75 loss) and Ohio State (76-64 loss). The Blue Read more

South
No surprise to see Florida earn the no. 1 seed and get to play just down the road in Orlando... Always funny to see the difference power ratings bettors use vs. the criteria of the selection committee with Colorado, a no. 8 seed and ranked 55th (Sagarin) and 64th (Ken Pom) vs. Pitt, a no. 9 seed (20th (Sagarin) and 18th (Ken Pom)... Obviously going to look at turnovers with games involving VCU. The Rams' first round foe, Stephen F. Austin, not only has a respectable turnover rate (16.8) but the Lumberjacks actually forced turnovers at a higher rate (24.1) in conference play than VCU (23.1) – albeit against the rather weak competition of the Southland... Pointless to look at Tulsa’s entire body of Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: UConn Huskies vs. Louisville Cardinals

UConn vs. Louisville -8 O/U 135.5
Recommendation: Over

Louisville has been an offensive juggernaut over the back half of the season, netting 80+ points in nine of their last 12 games. That acumen has been on full display during the AAC Tournament with 92- and 94-point efforts in the opening two rounds. And while the Cardinals still play stellar defense, their offense and pace of games puts tonight's total of 135 well within reach. UConn meanwhile has not played many high scoring games of late, using defense to wear teams down. They held both Memphis and Cincinnati to under 57 points in their first two tournament games. I think tonight's game won't be such a grinder – the margin vs. Memphis was too big to create flow and Cincinnati plays super-slow. Louisville is pushing the tempo at an incredible rate with 70+ possessions in five of their last six. The only one that fell below that was their 81-48 home win over UConn that gave the Cards a share of the AAC regular season title. So while both teams play outstanding defense I think there is an equal amount of offensive talent and as mentioned, the pace of this game should be fairly quick. And with Read more
