Florida Gulf Coast vs. Florida -13 O/U 133.5

By now everyone is aware of the Cinderella story of the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles who reached the Sweet Sixteen in just their second year of DI basketball. They were very impressive in their first two wins against Georgetown and San Diego State and now have a chance to reach the Elite Eight with a win over Florida.

On paper, it would not appear to be a good matchup for the Eagles as Florida is a solid defensive team that allows just 37.8% from the field and dominates the boards with a +5.3 rebound margin. However, the running and gunning Eagles just faced two teams that had strong defensive pedigrees and destroyed them both.

The interesting thing about FGCU is that they did not hit tons of threes to advance. They really didn’t even take many, which is a common factor in many NCAA tourney upsets. Against Georgetown, FGCU was 6-of-15 from deep and they were 8-of-19 against San Diego State. The vast majority of FGCU’s field goals were on dunks and layups, many of them created by the passing ability and court vision of point guard Brett Comer. He has been the most impressive ball Read more

NCAA Tournament Betting Preview: No. 13 South Dakota State Jackrabbits vs. No. 4 Michigan Wolverines

NCAA Tournament - South Region
Thursday, 4:15 pm PT, Auburn Hills, Mich.
No. 13 South Dakota State vs. No. 4 Michigan
CRIS Opener: Michigan -12 O/U 138.5
CRIS Current: Michigan -11 O/U 141
Recommendation: South Dakota State

The South Dakota State Jackrabbits have a tough matchup in playing Michigan in Auburn Hills. They were a team that I thought had a good shot at a Cinderella run, but this is a very tough draw in the first round. South Dakota State has an experienced, talented team led by point guard Nate Wolters. He led them to a road win at New Mexico earlier this year and they also battled Baylor in the first round last year’s Big Dance before falling by eight points. Again, I thought they might be the team that surprised everyone this year, but they had no luck in drawing Michigan in their home state. Also, Michigan was a first round upset victim against Ohio last year, so they certainly will not take the Jackrabbits Read more

SEC Tournament Betting Preview

SEC Tournament Preview

This year’s SEC Tournament is being played at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tenn. All 14 teams are in action including SEC newcomers Texas A&M and Missouri. Of the 14 teams, only top seeded Florida is assured of a spot in the NCAA Tournament. There are currently no fewer than six SEC teams are on the bubble for the Big Dance – Kentucky, Alabama, Missouri, Tennessee, Arkansas and Ole Miss. Of those teams, all of them have at least one bye, with only Arkansas playing before the quarterfinals. Kentucky has dominated the SEC tournament recently and historically, winning 27 times and reaching the finals in each of the last three years with two titles. Top-seed Florida hasn’t won since 2007, reaching the finals just once in the past five years.

First Round pick: Arkansas
This is a huge game for the Razorbacks, who will still have work to boost their résumé should they get past the Commodores. Arkansas, like many SEC teams, played well at home but struggled on the highwat. Their series with Vandy was typical of their results; they beat Vandy 56-33 at Read more

Mountain West Tournament Betting Preview

Mountain West Tournament Preview

The Mountain West Conference Tournament features nine teams, with five of them in position to earn an NCAA berth. As a result, this year’s tournament should be a wide open affair. The contenders include top seed New Mexico, No. 2 Colorado State, No. 3 (and host) UNLV, No. 4 San Diego State and No. 5 Boise State. The Aztecs have had the most success in the tournament in recent years with four straight championship game appearances and two titles including last year.

First Round Pick: Air Force
Air Force had a surprising 8-8 finish in the conference, just two games behind UNLV’s 10-6 mark. They also played UNLV very tough, beating the Rebels by 15 on their home court and falling in overtime here back in January. UNLV was 7-1 SU on its home court in conference play, but covered just twice and won by more than 10 just twice, against bottom feeders Nevada and Wyoming. They lost their last home game to Fresno State and also struggled to beat Boise State in their next to last game, winning by just four. Air Force did have some poor efforts away from home this year, but Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Pick: California Golden Bears at Arizona State Sun Devils

California at Arizona State -3.5
Recommendation: Arizona State

Arizona State is the better team here and despite getting tons of backing in their last game at Washington, they might be priced cheaply here. They opened +5.5 at Washington and were bet all the way down to +3, losing the game 96-92 to the Huskies. It was not a great effort defensively for the Sun Devils as they trailed by double-digits most of the game while allowing Washington to hit 36 of 68 from the field. However, they never quit, and shot 37-58, 64% from the floor themselves in making a valiant comeback. They catch a Cal team off two home wins over Oregon and Oregon State, and one that is not as efficient on the road as they are at home. Cal is 2-3 SU and ATS on the road this year, and they lack the inside game to hurt the Sun Devils like Washington did. Arizona State is 4-1 SU at home this year, smashing UCLA by 18 in its last game on this court. Herb Sendek will shore up the defense Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Kansas State Wildcats vs. Gonzaga Bulldogs

Kansas State vs. Gonzaga -9 O/U 137
Recommendation: Gonzaga

Gonzaga comes off its first loss of the season, dropping an 85-74 decision at home to Illinois last Saturday. The Bulldogs ran into Illinois at its best as the Illini hit 11-of-26 three pointers in route to the upset win. I still have Gonzaga ranked in my top ten, however, and they will bounce back today against a Kansas State team that is not as dangerous as the Illini.

Illinois actually averages 11 made threes per game, and the three-point shot is the ultimate weapon for underdogs in college basketball. Kansas State only makes 5.6 per game and hits just 31.2% from behind the arc. They will have trouble getting their points inside as well against the tall Gonzaga front line. KSU plays a three-guard lineup with 6-5 Nino Williams and 6-7 Thomas Gipson up front. Gonzaga counters with a front court that goes 6-8, 6-8, 7-0, and should control the paint in this one.

While this is not a Read more
