College Basketball Betting Free Play: Miami Hurricanes at Syracuse Orange

Miami -2.5 at Syracuse O/U 135.5
Recommendation: Miami

Syracuse is a hot mess right now, worthy of fading at every reasonable opportunity!  And with the Orange priced near pick ‘em in a game against a superior foe, this certainly looks like a reasonable opportunity to bet against a squad in the midst of a pointspread free-fall.

To say that Syracuse hasn’t beaten anybody all year would not be an understatement.  Their signature victory in non-conference play came against Monmouth.  Their seven other wins?  Colgate, Holy Cross, South Carolina State, North Florida, Eastern Michigan, Boston University and Cornell, not exactly a group of ACC caliber foes.

What’s wrong with the Orange?  Let’s start with their defense.  Jim Boeheim’s legendary, trademark 2-3 matchup zone.  In years past, this defense has created turnovers in bunches and limited opponents open looks, particularly in the paint.  That hasn’t happened this year. Syracuse has allowed a 1.21 assist-to-turnover ratio overall – waaaaaaay above Boeheim’s historical norms – despite facing Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: New Mexico Lobos at Utah State Aggies

New Mexico at Utah State -1 O/U 146
Recommendation: Over

In Mountain West games thus far not involving San Diego State and Nevada (the two best defensive teams in the league), the lowest score was 147 with the other seven ranging from 151-168. Dating back to last season, the Mountain West has been one of the highest free throw shooting conferences in the country. In 2015, the league's FT rate was 40.0 (3rd nationally) and this season just a shade under at 38.5 (5th). It is likely this has something to do with the league's refs but also the makeup of the league as few teams with the exception of SDSU are considering defensively "elite." Good defensive teams don’t foul as the saying goes. Leading the charge is New Mexico who has already attempted nearly 400 free throws (28.2 per game). In the Lobos' season opener against Fresno, they attempted 34 freebies and it resulted in a 78-73 win. They'll have a chance to score points and number of ways tonight as Utah State continues to struggle defensively under head coach Tim Duryea. The Aggies allowed 83 to Boise State and 78 to Air Force in two closes losses to open up MWC play. On the flip Read more

College Basketball Handicapping: Syracuse's defense has been awful

01.04.2017     08:46 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It's always fun to watch Jim Boeheim piss and moan when his team struggles and struggle they have as they enter tonight's game against Miami just 8-6. The problem? Defense. St. John's and Boston College somehow combined for 189 points. The Orange held BC to 40 last year! Another issue could be pace. Their last three losses all featured 71 possessions or more. Syracuse is 65th nationally in average length of offensive possession and 342nd defensively meaning they are spending a lot of time on the defensive end. And Boeheim went so far as to say it's a "long shot" things will get a lot better. Home dog to Miami tonight with the total played down from 139 to 135.5.

“Against anybody that can shoot at all our defense has been non-existent, whether it’s Wisconsin or Boston College or St. John’s,” he said on Sunday, rattling off games the Orange lost while allowing their opponent to shoot a combined 50 percent on 3-pointers (39-for-78).

“We’ve played 14

Texas A&M at Kentucky -14 O/U 150
Recommendation: Under

Contrasting offensive styles here where pace of play is concerned as Texas A&M’s adjusted tempo rating sits at 335th in the nation (out of 351 D1 teams) while Kentucky ranks 9th. Tonight’s game being played in Lexington would initially seem to favor UK imposing their style on the Aggies but the road is a place for conservative visitors to become even more conservative. Add to that, the early season results posted by A&M along with the Wildcats new focus on offense through the post and maybe the visitors from College Station can keep most of this game at a pace to their liking.

In contests against top notch offenses this season, Billy Kennedy’s crew has succeeded in keeping opponents under wraps. Against USC, the game totaled 128 points, versus Virginia Tech 133, UCLA 141, and Tennessee 136. All of those teams average 77 points per game and A&M was able to keep all of them contained. Offensively, the Aggies scored between 63-67 points in all of those games proving that they can slow down games involving high octane teams.    Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Arizona Wildcats at California Golden Bears

Arizona at California -2.5 O/U 129
Recommendation: Under

Because of injuries and lack of depth, Arizona has been forced to slow down its tempo this season. Sean Miller even admitted that he's had his team walk the ball up the floor to essentially shorten the game and preserve his players. The Cats do get a boost with the return of Parker Jackson-Cartwright tonight but he'll be limited in terms of minutes and effectiveness. We have a pretty barometer of what to expect from Arizona's offense. The Wildcats faced Michigan State, Butler, Gonzaga and Texas A&M and netted between 62-67 points with all four games 68 possessions or lower. In only one of those games did Arizona top a point per possession. And note that none of those were "true" road games. Tonight's game is and you can make a strong argument California's defense is better than anyone Arizona has faced thus far. All but three of the Golden Bears' opponents this year have been held to below 0.90 ppp. San Diego State was the only team to top a point per possession and did so in large part because of a 31 trips to the free throw line. The Aztecs shot only 37%. And don't sleep on Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Pepperdine Waves at Gonzaga Bulldogs

Pepperdine at Gonzaga -26 O/U 145.5
Recommendation: Over

Pepperdine has played some pretty good offenses this season and in nearly every instance, said offenses had their way with the Waves. Due in large part to a few key injuries, Pepperdine has lost seven straight and during that span allowed 84.8 ppg. A turnaround doesn't look likely this evening as they head to Spokane to take on Gonzaga who owns the 15th-rank offensive efficiency in the country. And when given the chance, the Zags are running more this season with 70 or more possessions in eight games including 82 in last week's 102-65 win over South Dakota. Most of Pepperdine's game have been fairly fast in large part because of playing from behind. And despite being short-handed, the Waves have netted 63 points or more in every game. Getting to 60 is far from a guarantee tonight as Gonzaga counters with some of the best defensive numbers in the country (0.91 ppp allowed). What's likely needed is a margin and based on the pointspread (Gonzaga -26) the second half should feature plenty of garbage time. The Zags with a good shot at hitting 90 tonight which puts the over in play.

College Basketball Betting Free Play: UL-Lafayette Ragin Cajuns at Georgia Bulldogs

UL-Lafayette at Georgia -9.5 O/U 152.5
Recommendation: Over

UL-Lafayette is one of the more talented mid-major teams in the country offensively led by the trio of Bryce Washington (15.3 ppg), Frank Bartley (19.1 ppg) and Jay Wright (14.5 ppg). And what I like best about the Ragin Cajuns is most of their point production comes from 2-pointers and the free throw line. When mid-major teams that rely heavily on the three-point shot go on the road to face power conference competition, the offense is vulnerable to struggles. Head coach Bob Marlin's attacking style is proven capable against a better class of opponents. Last season against Miami (FL), Alabama, and UCLA, ULL scored 77, 93, and 80 respectively. To open up 2016, they had difficulty knocking down shots at Minnesota but still posted 74 points thanks to a fast pace and 30 free throw attempts. From a totals perspective, Georgia has always been tough to figure under Mark Fox. Some games the Bulldogs will run up and down and score while others are low scoring fist fights. Earlier this season they faced UNC Asheville and Furman; two somewhat similar teams pace and ability wise. Against Asheville, UGA Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Missouri State Bears at Southeast Missouri Redhawks

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Missouri State -9 at Southeast Missouri O/U 144.5
Recommendation: Over

Southeast Missouri is your typical up-tempo, no defense low mid-major. The Redhawks appear a bit improved over last season's 5-24 disaster with three wins already over DI competition. Of 2015's 27 games against DI teams, on only seven occasions did SEMO net better than a point per possession. This season, they've done in four times and have a shot to do it again on their home floor this evening. Missouri State is another team that looks much improved on the offensive end. They hung 96 against Alabama A&M and 91 against Jacksonville State to kick off the season. Not exactly stiff competition but SEMO isn't either as the Redhawks rank near the bottom nationally in a number of defensive categories. The Bears saw more resistance in their last three games against DePaul, North Dakota State and Air Force but still averaged a respectable 67.7 ppg with all three games at 68 possessions or less. There's also an injury to be aware with Missouri State's Obediah Church unlikely to play due to an bum knee. He's a strong "under" player with limited offensive ability and a big Read more
