College Basketball Betting News: End of the game shenanigans help teaser bettors

12.04.2014     02:12 PM     Printer Friendly
This is funny but despite various claims (Deadspin comments) that it impacted the spread, it did not. Portland opened -11 vs. Portland State and closed -9.5. As you can see by the video, the Pilots were up 14 and trying to run out the clock when a PSU player pulled the old fake a handshake and steal the ball for an easy dunk routine. They counted the bucket and the game landed 12. The only betors potentially impacted were those who teased +9.5 to +13.5. If that was you, congrats, you won the first the first leg of one of the dumbest types of bets on the board.

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Temple Owls at St. Joseph's Hawks

Temple -2 at St. Joseph's O/U 124
Recommendation: Temple

Constantly interested in fading this St. Joseph’s team which appears to be one of the more difficult projects Phil Martelli has had to put together. Martelli was very candid prior to the Gonzaga disaster about his team’s lack of offense and how he would have to be creative in order to generate points. The solution was to try and get easy open floor baskets to cover up the massive deficiencies in their half-court offense. St. Joe’s needs to score off of turnovers and attack before the opposing defense can set up. However, the way their roster is currently constructed it’s difficult to execute that type of game plan. The Hawks average offensive passion time ranks 313th among Division 1 teams and they have struggled to score being held to less than 60 points in four of their first six games. Their game plan for point production figures to be made even tougher tonight against Temple which fundamentally can negate what St. Joseph’s wants to do. The Owls prefer pace and are better equipped to get easy baskets because of their sizeable backcourt advantage. Veteran senior Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Ohio State Buckeyes at Louisville Cardinals

Ohio State at Louisville -8 O/U 135.5
Recommendation: Louisville

This marks the first real test of the year for the young Ohio State Buckeyes. Thus far, the Buckeyes have feasted on weak competition at home, winning all five of their games by wide margins. Their stiffest test came against a rebuilding Marquette team on November the 18th, a game they won 74-63. This marks a completely different challenge, as they not only face the first team that is better than they are, they do so on the road in a very hostile environment.

Ohio State is relying heavily on two freshmen and a sophomore that didn’t play much as a freshman and a couple of seniors. Freshman guard D’Angelo Russell is their leading scorer but he could wilt in the face of the Louisville pressure. He had seven turnovers against Marquette and four against James Madison, the two most athletic teams he has faced, and the pressure of the Cardinals will be much, much more intense than those teams.  Senior guard Shannon Scott will be the primary ball handler for the Buckeyes, but he will have to have some help and none of the other guards on the roster have any Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Charlotte 49ers vs. South Carolina Gamecocks

Charlotte vs. South Carolina -2.5 O/U 135
Recommendation: Over

If you've watch any college basketball this season you'll notice a lot of low scores and game going under the total. The betting markets are pretty much blind betting every game under the total off of the opener. Any rightfully so as slow pace, lack of fouls, and zone defense seem to be the new trend, especially in power conference play. This however presents opportunities to play overs on cheaper prices when you can find games that project to play fast with so-so defenses. I think we have the with South Carolina and Charlotte. The 49ers are the quintessential over team: good offense, fast pace, average defense. We saw it yesterday when they produced 166 points in regulation against Penn State (Charlotte won 106-97 in 2OT). The Gamecocks meanwhile have played three relatively slow paced, low scoring games against North Florida, Baylor, and Cornell. North Florida runs but doesn't match up well vs. bigger more athletic teams. Baylor and Cornell tend to play slow. Frank Martin's team typically play at an above average pace and while projected to be a better defensive team they still grade Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Austin Peay Governors at Samford Bulldogs

Austin Peay at Samford +3
Recommendation: Samford

Very game effort by Samford last time out in a 63-56 loss at Pittsburgh. The Bulldogs amazingly outrebounded the Panthers but more importantly, as first-year head coach Scott Padgett, put forth a tremendous effort. This of course coming of the heels of an 80-40 loss at Purdue. Don't want to put too much stock in one performance but on the same token, Austin Peay has no business laying -3 on the highway. The Governors have been getting progressively worse under long-time head coach Dave Loos who hasn't had a winning season since 2011. Defensively, Austin Peay ranked 10th out of 12 in the OVC last year and it showed in a dismal 12-18, 6-10 record. As a favorite last season, APSU was a consistent moneyburner losing outright in close lined games against fellow bottom feeders Eastern Illinois and SIUE. They were also laying this exact same price at Samford last season and were blown out 85-63. Samford is a completely different team but the overall talent level for both of these squads is on equal footing. When it's bad vs. bad laying road chalk becomes a low percentage play as we take the generous +3. Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Detroit Titans at Oregon Ducks

Detroit at Oregon -10.5 O/U 151
Recommendation: Over

Expecting to see a lot of pace in tonight's Oregon-Detroit matchup. The Ducks hung 107 in their opener against Coppin State and while the Titans are poised to put up much more resistance, we're still likely to see in the range of 150 possessions, which makes it reasonable to think the home side reaches the mid-80's. Detroit is a team that has historically been willing to play at a fast clip under head coach Ray McCallum. The Titans struggled offensively last year without the services of McCallum's son, Ray. Jr., who is now in the NBA. With a number of guards now a year more experienced plus in influx of transfers, this is a squad that should improve on last year's dismal 1.00 ppp. The biggest thing I noticed with Detroit is not just a willingness but a desire to play fast. Last year, in games against up-tempo Toledo, NC State, Oakland we saw scores of 158, 166, 162, and 143, and 154 in regulation. Oregon meanwhile has a strong track record of high scoring games in the non-conference with 10 of its last 13 dating back to last season topping 150 points in regulation. The games that didn't were all Read more

College Basketball Handicapping: Returning Starter Breakdown

11.14.2014     07:21 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Below is a list of teams with zero or five returning starters according to Blue Ribbon. Two schools of thought: with all the transferring going on these days it is easy to have no returning starters but in reality possess a fair amount of experience with guys that started or played significant minutes at their previous school. Second, five returning starters like 18+ returning starters in football is often overvalued in the betting markets. Is five returning starters for Southern Utah a good thing? If they don't have at least a few new recruits starting then we would say no even when you account for natural year-to-year improvement.
