College Basketball Betting Free Play: St. Joseph's Hawks at Dayton Flyers

St. Joseph's at Dayton -10 O/U 123.5
Recommendation: Dayton

Flyers head coach Archie Miller raised some eyebrows when he kicked his top two returning big men off the team before Christmas, dismissing Jalen Robinson and Devin Scott.  That came on the heels of a bum knee from a potential impact big man Detwon Rogers in preseason, that has kept him sidelined all year.  And  another potential upside big man Steve McElvene was ruled ineligible to play this season.

Miller clearly knew what he was doing.  Dayton has played with a collective fire in their bellies that’s been second to none in the A-10 since those dismissals.  They are 12-3 SU since the roster upheaval ad 8-4 ATS in their last dozen ballgames.  Two of the three losses have come by two points or less.  Nine of their twelve wins have come by double digit margins.

Miller had a gameplan when he kicked the malcontents off the squad, running three and four guard lineups out on the floor, relying on quickness and talent, not size. The results have been remarkable: strong shooting percentages, excellent production from beyond the Read more

College Basketball Gambling: UConn already eyeing conference tournament

02.19.2015     09:06 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It's that time of year where for some teams, the "writing is on the wall." Meaning the only way to get to the NCAA Tournament will be via a conference tournament title. Last year's champ, UConn, is faced with exactly that. The Huskies are 14-10 and 7-5 in AAC play with an RPI ranking of 80. They're a 2.5-point road underdog vs. Memphis tonight.

“It’s no secret,” senior guard Ryan Boatright pointed out, matter-of-factly. “That’s the only chance we’ve got.”

“We’re just trying to get better every day,” Boatright continued. “We’re trying to win as many games as possible, but just try to get better every day so that we’re ready for that tournament. It’s no secret that we’re gonna have to win that tournament to make the (NCAA) tournament.”

College Basketball Gambling: Arizona State student section provides extra homecourt edge

02.18.2015     01:20 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Well, this is interesting. Arizona State's student section uses this crazy curtain-like operation during opponent free throw attempts that statistics say gives ASU nearly a point-and-a-half worth of extra homecourt value. They're no doubt reaching with this one but worth checking out tonight as UCLA comes to town (6 pm PT, ESPN2).

Austin Tymins of the Harvard Sports Analysis Collective estimated that the visiting teams’ lowered accuracy—60.6 percent in the second half this season, versus 68.6 percent in the first—should result in a 1.41 points per game home advantage for ASU.

Boston College at Florida State -6.5
Recommendation: Florida State

Boston College’s schedule has been a beast having played 10 of its 12 ACC games against opponents with a .500 or better conference record. Sandwiched in they also faced 17-5 and probable NCAA Tournament bound Harvard. That baker’s dozen culminated Monday afternoon with a double overtime game versus Miami (postponed from the day before) which not only ended in a heartbreaking loss, but also shortened the preparation and rest time for this contest.  There’s only so much in BC’s tank right now and traveling on short rest off of a tough loss sets this one up as a fade situation. BC’s rotation (only seven deep) saw all three top scorers go 43 or more minutes on Monday afternoon with team leader Olivier Hanlan playing 49 of the 50 minutes. It’s an excellent spot for host FSU to take advantage of a fatigued opponent which has now dropped six straight contests. Leonard Hamilton’s group is on a current three-game ATS win streak and even broader 7-1 ATS mark over their last eight. During the impressive money making run, only ACC elite Duke and Read more

College Basketball Handicapping: Louisville suspends starting point guard Jones

02.18.2015     08:12 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Louisville will be without the services of starting point guard Chris Jones (suspended) against Syracuse this evening. Jones was the team's leader in assists and one of only three UL players who showed the ability to knock down the occasional three-pointer. Making matters worse are some defensive concerns for the Cardinals who gave up 74 points (1.12 points per possession) in last Saturday's home loss to NC State.

“There’s been a lack of intensity on the defensive end. Maybe Coach is right, when our shots don’t fall we don’t want to play defense. We can’t have that. You go into the tournament like that and you’ll be home in the first round. If we miss shots, we can’t let it bother us. We still have to play defense and I don’t see that happening. Honestly, I feel like there are times everybody isn’t on the same page.”

College Basketball Gambling: Seton Hall tries to weather storm

02.16.2015     07:25 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Things have gotten -- and still may be -- messy for Seton Hall after a player quit and rumors surfaced about a troubled locker room. The Pirates were 15-6, 5-4 but have dropped four straight and play the second of three straight road games at Villanova this evening. Head coach Kevin Willard commended his team for their effort in a spread covering 69-62 loss at Providence on Saturday.

"It's tough coming on the road after having to deal with a lot of B.S. over the last week," Seton Hall coach Kevin Willard said after the loss. "We came on the road to a packed house and I thought we did a good job of battling. (I'm) really proud of this team."

Arizona State -2 at Washington O/U 145.5
Recommendation: Over

Since the departure of Robert Upshaw we've seen Washington take on a completely different identity. The Huskies have been forced to play as many as four guards and an undersized forward and their defense has suffered as a result. Eliminated their game against offensively inept Oregon State and without Upshaw, Washington has allowed 1.20 points per possession in every game. In those four games, teams averaged 84.5 ppg. You also have to question where this team is at mentally after suffering back-to-back blowout losses. Arizona State has been up and down for much of the season but has shown much more ability to score after failing to crack 60 in its first four PAC-12 contests. Over their last seven games, the Sun Devils have averaged 74.1 ppg with a number of those games played at a fast tempo. Both teams aren't even close to being in the postseason discussion and with this being their second game in three days, I don't project much in the way of defensive intensity. Play it over.

West Virginia at Iowa State -7 O/U 158.5
Recommendation: Under

They'll no doubt be a lot of pace and points in this afternoon's West Virginia-Iowa State game but oddsmakers aren't messing around by opening this game 160. It's since been bet down slightly to 158.5 but I see a few factors that make playing the under worth a bet. For starters, Iowa State talked all week about shoring up its leaky defense. That doesn't mean they're going to start holding teams in the 60's as their games are way too fast for that. But at home off of allowing 94 points to Oklahoma, I expect a much better effort. Next, West Virginia doesn't have a very efficient offense. In fact, the Mountaineers are averaging less than a point per possession in Big XII play. And it's important to note that not one WVU Big XII game has topped 158 in regulation. In the first meeting between these two squads there was a fair amount of pace (144 possession) and points 146 but it went under the closing total of 150. Neither team has changed much of all since that game back in mid-January and yet today's total is eight points higher. In order for this game to go over the total you'll need close Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Michigan Wolverines at Illinois Fighting Illini

Michigan at Illinois -6.5 O/U 121
Recommendation: Illinois

Michigan is an injury riddled mess right now; a team that I’m looking to bet against in hostile environments both tonight and moving forward.  The Wolverines are coming off another tight, deflating loss at Indiana over the weekend, their fourth defeat in the last five games.  Two of those losses (Michigan State and Wisconsin) were overtime affairs.  And it’s not going to get any easier for John Beilein’s squad tonight as they travel to Assembly Hall in Champaign to take on the Illini.

Michigan’s injury woes are getting worse, not better.  Four of their five starters played at least 34 minutes at Indiana, and at least part of the reason why the Wolverines have been struggling so much in close games is because they are short-handed, running out of gas in the latter stages of tight contests.  Let’s not forget that this team lost FIVE underclassmen to the NBA over the last three drafts.  Last month, star guard and leading scorer Caris LeVert was lost to a season ending foot injury.  Since then, they’ve lost third Read more
