College Basketball Gambling: NC State situation somehow turning even more toxic

02.15.2017     09:09 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Currently residing on the front page of ESPN.com is an article titled, "Sources: Mark Gottfried likely out at NC State, barring late surge." Awkward timing considering the Wolf Pack have a game tonight against rival North Carolina. Gottfried's days are without a doubt numbered as his team enters tonight of a five-game losing streak (0-5 ATS). And it's never a good thing when an unnamed coach within your league calls your team out for not playing hard. Despite having a sure-fire first round draft pick in Dennis Smith, NC State has suffered conference losses of 18, 51 (!!!), 25, 24, and 30.

"They have more than enough talent to get to the NCAA tourney," one ACC coach told ESPN. "They just don't play hard at all."

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Penn State Nittany Lions at Nebraska Cornhuskers

Penn State at Nebraska -4.5 O/U 141
Recommendation: Nebraska

Teams in this contest are on even footing from an overall talent standpoint but willing to take a stance with the home team Huskers tonight for a pair of reasons. Penn State has risen up the Big Ten power ratings ladder over the last couple of games registering an upset home win over Maryland followed an 83-70 win at Illinois on Saturday. However, their current 3-2 SU/ATS stretch could be more a product of a weak schedule rather than massive improvement. A close look shows four of the five recent Nittany Lions games have been against teams in the Big Ten’s bottom five. Maryland is the only team during this span with a record above .500 in league play. Contrary to that, Nebraska enters off of a difficult five game schedule where they faced four teams above .500 in conference action. Included in those contests are a home win over second place Purdue and a 70-69 OT loss at league kingpin Wisconsin. Tonight they get a very young Penn State team inside a sold out Pinnacle Bank Arena so figure Nebraska to play with extreme energy.

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Ball State Cardinals at Northern Illinois Huskies

Ball State at Northern Illinois -2.5 O/U 141.5
Recommendation: Over

Ball State has been a dead nuts "over" team for much of the MAC season. On the year the Cardinals are 10-2 O/U in league play with the lowest closing total coming in at 146. Tonight, they travel to Northern Illinois who has also played "over" basketball with a record of 9-3 O/U vs. the MAC. The Huskies however don't play at a particularly fast pace and currently own the league's top defensive efficiency mark. But dig a little and you'll notice that NIU's defense, while solid, is far from elite thanks to a very favorable schedule. In games against the top five offenses in the MAC, Northern Illinois allowed 72, 76, 83, 76, and 78. All five of those games topped tonight's total of 141.5. Ball State has the sixth-ranked offense but also averages nearly 75 possessions per game. And they've been very consistent with that pace. Of BSU's 12 league games, all but two had 72 possessions or more. On the flip side, NIU should be sitting on a solid offensive performance after two clunkers on the road. Ball State grades out as average at best defensively. The Cardinals have Read more

College Basketball Handicapping: If you've been betting on SEC road teams, you're probably rich

02.14.2017     08:53 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
By this point in the season, you are probably aware that the SEC isn't very good. Kentucky, Florida and South Carolina are all solid and sure-fire tournament teams but beyond that, it's pretty messy. And by messy, we mean a lot of mediocre basketball. One interesting stat in the SEC this year is how bad home courts have been. Last season, the SEC ranked second out of 32 leagues with a home straight up winning percentage of 69.8%. This season has been the complete opposite. Heading into tonight's games, home teams have won 43 of 84 games which is barely over 50%. Compared to the rest of the power conference world -- ACC (68.1%), PAC-12 (61.5%), Big XII (61.3%), Big East (59.4%), Big Ten (58.6%) -- that's horrific. And let's not forget the automatic win when Missouri rolls into town. But where it really starts to get noteworthy is the spread records of those road teams. How about 51-32-1 ATS or 61.4%!

SEC SU/ATS Road Record
South Carolina (5-1 SU, 3-2-1 ATS)
Florida (4-1 SU, 4-1 ATS)
Alabama (4-2 SU, 4-2 ATS)
Kentucky (4-2 SU, 2-4 ATS)
Arkansas (4-2 SU, 4-2 ATS)
Vanderbilt (4-3 SU, 5-2 ATS)
Tennessee (3-3 SU, Read more

College Basketball Handicapping: New rule changes in store for NIT

02.13.2017     09:07 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Get ready for some more postseason rule changes in college basketball. The NCAA has used "secondary" tournaments as a way to test changes that may improve the game. This year's NIT will reset team fouls at the 10-minute mark of the first half, halftime, and 10-minute mark of the second half. Once you hit four fouls, teams will be awarded two free throws. They will also shorten the shot clock to 20 seconds instead of 30 seconds when the ball is inbounded in the front court.

College Basketball Gambling: Gonzaga sports best spread record in the country

02.09.2017     09:35 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Out of curiosity, we scanned through college basketball's current against the spread records. Guess who has the best mark in the nation? How about the Gonzaga Bulldogs. And what's impressive about the Zags' 16-4-1 ATS tally is that they aren't exactly under the radar. Gonzaga currently ranks No. 1 according to the AP, USA Today, Sagarin, and Ken Pom. For tonight, they are -17 road chalk tonight against Loyola Marymount and have a big showdown at St. Mary's on Saturday. That game projects to be close to a pick 'em.

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Louisiana Tech Bulldogs at UTEP Miners

Louisiana Tech -6 at UTEP O/U 133.5
Recommendation: Under

Pretty remarkable turnaround for UTEP after starting the season 2-13. The Miners have won six of seven thanks to some savvy coaching by veteran Tim Floyd. Floyd slowed down the tempo of the games and created a lot of confusion for the opposition by constantly switching defenses. Over the last seven games, UTEP has allowed 58 ppg in regulation. This is the same team that in mid-December coughed up 76 in a home loss to 327th-ranked Northern Arizona. Louisiana Tech isn't as offensively dynamic as last year's squad that scored 78 and 80 in both meetings vs. UTEP. Instead, the Bulldogs have been getting it done on the defensive end of the floor with the league's third-best defensive efficiency (0.94). They've been especially dominant against the weaker offenses in C-USA. Tech has faced four of the five teams in the league currently averaging less than a point per possession and held those four squads to 56.3 ppg. One of those four was UTEP, who netted only 44 in the first meeting. What keeps this from being a great play is the value as the aforementioned game closed 141. And Louisiana Tech is also Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Utah State Aggies at Colorado State Rams

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Utah State at Colorado State -5.5 O/U 140.5
Recommendation: Under

I've played Utah State under the total a handful of times over the last few weeks and have been rewarded with a few easy winners. The Aggies have actually gone under in six straight games based on the closing number thanks to some improved defense and a moderate pace. During that stretch, USU allowed 67.7 ppg and four of the six had 65 possessions or less. One such game was the first meeting between Utah State and tonight's opponent Colorado State. The Rams prevailed 64-56 as the game went well under the total of 142. CSU is a game out of first place in the Mountain West after winning four of five. The Rams are one of the slower teams in the MWC, particiularly on offense as Larry Eustachy has really preached patience. "It's the way you should play basketball," Eustachy said. "You want the other team to guard you, break them down, take a good shot, and then you don't spend as much time on defense." The Mountain West can be a tough nut to crack for totals bettors. There are a lot of games that appear headed for the low-130's only to land north of 150. Fouls, defensive Read more
