NCAA Tournament Gambling: Short lined games abound for Sweet Sixteen

03.26.2014     07:52 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Las Vegas oddsmakers are expecting the unexpected with Thursday and Friday's NCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen games. Every game save for San Diego State-Arizona is currently lined at 4.5 or less. Four of last year's eight Sweet Sixteen games were lined at 5 or above.

“These teams are getting so close as far as their talent,” Vaccaro said. “The gap between teams isn’t that great anymore, and you can really see it in the point spreads. There is no game here that would shock anyone with the outcome.”

“The Cinderella slipper is guaranteed to be in the Elite Eight,” McCormick said. “Dayton was probably the best team of the first two rounds for us, with their upset over Ohio State and then following it by beating Syracuse. They were great for the house.”

NCAA Tournament Handicapping: Michigan State takes on Virginia in Sweet Sixteen

03.26.2014     07:36 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Michigan State -1.5 vs. Virginia O/U 126.5

Contrasting styles collide with Michigan State's preferred up-tempo attack taking on slow paced and defensive-mind Virginia in Friday's NCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen matchup. In MSU's two tournament wins, they produced games scores of 171 and 153. Virginia meanwhile remains slow but because of its strong offensive efficiency (1.14 points per possession) the Cavs have played a fair amount of moderately high scoring games. Against Duke and North Carolina – two ACC teams that best resemble Michigan State – the games scores were 134, 137, and 135. And last time out against Memphis, UVA won 78-60 with a fairly swift 66 possessions. Friday's total is currently 126.5.

“But don’t let them fool you — they’ll get out and run,” MSU associate head coach Dwayne Stephens said. “They’re just more opportunistic running rather than push it every time like us. Really, that’s the only difference I Read more

NCAA Tournament Gambling: UCLA's defense leads to under-the-total trend

03.26.2014     06:46 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
UCLA vs. Florida -4.5 O/U 137

UCLA's run to the Sweet Sixteen has come in large part because of its strong defensive play. The Bruins held both Tulsa and Stephen F. Austin to under a point per possession and did the same against Oregon and Stanford in the PAC-12 Tournament. It creates a challenging handicap for totals bettors because the Bruins' defense creates transition opportunities and in a lot of cases the pace of the games is fast but the opposition doesn't score enough. Over its last five games, UCLA is averaging 78.8 ppg but allowing only 62.4 ppg. As a result, four of those five games went under the total.

"We have guys who run like horses in transition," said guard Kyle Anderson. "All the credit goes to our defense. I think our guys have bought into the preparation for what other teams run. We're there for each other, helping."

NCAA Tournament Betting: Michigan concerned about Tennessee's front court

03.25.2014     02:14 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Tennessee vs. Michigan -2 O/U 131.5

Article of Michigan's prep for Friday's Sweet Sixteen matchup against Tennessee. Head coach John Beilein's biggest concern is that the Vols play two tradition post players, something the Wolverines haven't been able to do since the loss of Mitch McGary.

“This is a team that we see quite often and is a difficult match for us because they have great quickness on the perimeter and they play with a classic two big guys on the blocks that just beat us up,” Beilein said on Mike and Mike. “When we lost Mitch McGary early in the year, that no longer became an option to us, to play with two bigs, and we’ve just been playing with one. It is going to be difficult. They will probably win the rebounding battle, we gotta win the possession battle like we did the other day.”

NCAA Tournament Gambling: Wisconsin confident it can crack Baylor's zone

03.25.2014     07:06 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Baylor vs. Wisconsin -3 O/U 136.5

Wisconsin talks about its preparation for Baylor's 1-3-1 zone. The Badgers plan on doing the simple things – ball movements, shot fakes, and showing patience. The Bears held Nebraska and Creighton to a combined 9-of-45, 20% from three. Wisky meanwhile has knocked down 21-of-61, 41% from three this postseason.

"We always have a method," Ryan said, "and our method is deception if you can. Subtle deception. Ball-fakes. Shot-fakes.

"Every team I've ever seen that is successful uses them. So we've got to use them."

"You've just got to try and find some weak spots," Brust, a 38.9% three-point shooter this season, said of the Bears' zone. "You've got to be patient and work it around, try to get movement. Use shot-fakes, ball-fakes. Just keep working it until you get the good one, and when you get the good one you've got to knock it down.

NCAA Tournament Betting: Kentucky in great form but Louisville remains moderate favorite

03.25.2014     06:55 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Kentucky vs. Louisville -5 O/U 138.5

Current form or entire body of work? That is the conundrum with Friday's Kentucky-Louisville game. The Wildcats have looked Final Four-esque (4-1 SU, 5-0 ATS) since losing to Florida in the regular season finale. The Cardinals meanwhile received scares in their first two tourney games from Manhattan and Saint Louis – trailing in the second half of both only to pull away late. Prior to the NCAA Tournament, 14 of Louisville's last 15 wins came by double-digits. UK won the regular season meeting in Lexington, 73-66 as 1.5-point favorites. For Friday, Louisville has held steady as a 5-point favorite; something oddsmakers don't feel will change much prior to tip-off.

“The line is based on rating of both teams,” he said. “Kentucky played great Sunday. From what I’ve seen, it was one of their best-played games all year… So yes, the line probably came down a little bit from what I thought it would be originally. But you Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Penn State Nittany Lions at Siena Saints

Penn State -4.5 at Siena O/U 136.5
Recommendation: Under

Plenty of time off for these CBI opponents as the tourney resumes after a five day layoff. For Siena, the key tonight according to head coach Jimmy Patsos will be matching Penn State’s physical style and trying to stay competitive on the boards. PSU has multiple advantages in this game which is likely why they’ve been pushed from an opener of -3 all the way to -4.5. PSU’s Tim Frazier is the best player on the floor tonight and will be a matchup headache for the Saints but the differences in size and ability down on the block plus a decisive experience edge figure to help the Nittany Lions as well. With each team preferring to play a methodical style, it’s imperative that Siena locks down Frazier and keeps Penn State off the boards. In their last six games, Siena and Penn State have combined to play 10 of the 12 “under” tonight’s current total of 136.5 Expect that type of game to again ensue here as these teams have recently been fully committed to the defensive end and non-risky, clock eating offense. Saints 4-9 “under” the total at home Read more
