College Basketball Betting Free Play: Vanderbilt Commodores at Stanford Cardinal

Vanderbilt at Stanford -3 O/U 150
Recommendation: Under

There's no doubt that the shot clock adjustment for the secondary college basketball tournaments has had an impact on pace of play and scoring. How significant though depends largely on the matchup. I've seen games where it didn't really matter and others where it was probably worth an extra 15 points and 10 possessions. Both oddsmakers and the betting markets had priced totals anywhere from 6-15 points higher than they would be under normal circumstances. Tonight's Vanderbilt-Stanford game is currently priced at 150; about 12-14 points higher than a regular season matchup. From watching both teams, neither has been forced to adjust much to the rule change as they typically play at a moderate pace. And of the four games they've played, three went well below 150. The lone exception was the crazy 109-point second half between Vandy and South Dakota State. The Jackrabbits were two days removed from a wild shootout win at elevation over Colorado State and clearly had nothing left in the tank. I'll also point out the extra importance on tonight's contest with the winner earning a trip to the Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Sweet Sixteen Betting Preview

03.23.2015     07:48 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The insanity that is March Madness just provided bettors and fans alike with one of the more memorable opening weekends of NCAA Tournament action.  Now that the dust has settled, it’s time to take a look at the 16 teams still standing in the Big Dance from a pointspread perspective.  Which squads offer some semblance of betting value moving forward and which do not?  Read on to find out.

Two conferences stood out above the rest this past weekend.  The ACC sent a whopping five teams to the Sweet 16 out of six Big Dance entrants while going 11-1 SU.  But bettors didn’t make a dime supporting those ACC teams, who combined to go 5-7 ATS.  Duke was the lone ACC squad to notch a pair of pointspread covers.  Notre Dame was one of two teams (Kentucky being the other) to go 2-0 SU but 0-2 ATS.

The PAC-12, on the other hand, produced both SU and ATS success for bettors this past weekend.  The four PAC-12 entrants combined to go 7-1 SU, sending three teams to the Sweet 16.  Even more impressively, the conference combined to go 7-1 ATS; the lone non-cover coming in Arizona’s 21 point opening round win as 23 point Read more

NCAA Tournament Betting Free Play: West Virginia Mountaineers vs. Maryland Terrapins

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
West Virginia -1 vs. Maryland O/U 138
Recommendation: Under

After spending the first half of the Big XII season playing wild, high scoring, up-tempo affairs, West Virginia's games have since cooled down a bit. Ten of the Mountaineers' first 12 league games had 142 or more possessions. Since then, only one, an overtime game against Kansas that was 59-59 at the end of regulation, topped 140 total possessions. The rest were far more moderate including WVU's 68-62 opening round win over Buffalo. The Bulls don't mind pushing the pace and either does WVU, but because of the close nature of the game, it stay well under the total of 150. Maryland will look to push in transition when given the opportunity, but ultimately, the Terps play at a moderate pace and rely heavily on their defense. Over the last month, nearly every single one of UM's games were slow paced and below 130 points. The only exception was against fast paced, no defense Indiana and that game hit 144 on 128 possessions thanks to 55 free throw attempts. The current side price suggests we'll have a competitive ball game leaving the likelihood of an even slower pace the last five minutes. Let's Read more

NCAA Tournament Betting Free Play: Dayton Flyers vs. Providence Friars

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Dayton vs. Providence -3 O/U 131
Recommendation: Providence

I’ve been a fan of the Providence Friars all season long. I think Ed Cooley has done a fantastic job with this program and they should enjoy matchup and situational edges tonight against Dayton. This game will take place in Columbus so Dayton gets to play in their home state once again which should lend some crowd support but I’m not sure it will make enough of a difference. The Flyers do not have a deep rotation with just seven players which is bad news when playing your second game in three days. Dayton saw two of its best players, Dyshawn Pierre and Scoochie Smith, play the full 40 minutes against Boise State so a quick Wednesday to Friday turnaround is less than ideal. Providence has every reason to be fired up for this game as it attempts to snap the program’s 4-game NCAA Tournament losing streak. The Friars were an 11th seed last year and had a 7-point lead against North Carolina with a few minutes left only to see the lead slip away in a 79-77 loss. It was a heartbreaking defeat and one that the Friars remember vividly. Tyler Harris: “We feel more comfortable Read more

NCAA Tournament Betting Free Play: Davidson Wildcats vs. Iowa Hawkeyes

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Davidson +2.5 vs. Iowa O/U 145.5
Recommendation: Davidson

Davidson’s preseason reputation has had a dramatic effect on their power rating number all year.  The Wildcats won 20 games last year in the Southern Conference on the heels of 25 and 26 win seasons the two previous years.  But when they moved to the Atlantic 10 for the 2014-15 campaign, both pundits and coaches expected them to be a bottom feeder, ranked 12th or lower in the 14-team league.

That drop-off didn’t happen.  The Wildcats got blown out at North Carolina in their first lined game of the season.  They proceeded to go 22-3 ATS in their next 25 lined contests, the single best pointspread team in the country.

After years of needing to win their conference tourney to reach the Big Dance from the one-bid SoCon, this year, Davidson didn’t need to win their conference tourney to get a bid, and they played like it – flat as a pancake in their opener against LaSalle, then run out of the gym completely by VCU the following day.  Those back-2-back ATS losses have the betting markets souring on Bob McKillop’s squad once Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Gardner Webb Bulldogs at Colorado Buffaloes

Gardner Webb +12 at Colorado O/U 158
Recommendation: Gardner Webb

The 2016 season starts here for Colorado which is going to get its youth involved tonight following star PG and leading scorer Askia Booker’s (17.2 ppg) decision to not play in this tournament due to sore hips. Booker will instead take time to rest and heal in preparation for the NBA Draft. Also missing from tonight’s game will be sophomore backup PF Dustin Thomas (16.7 minutes per game) who has decided to transfer. Each were part of the nine-man rotation that had an offensive surge this month as the Buffs averaged 81 points in their five March games. Without them, the rotation slims down to seven and the PG duties fall in the hands of freshman Dominque Collier who the team has high hopes for but has shot just 35% from the field, 27.1% from 3-point range and 57% from the foul line in 28 games this season. The CBI experiment with the 30 second clock figures to certainly test Colorado as they adjust to a brand new point man running their offense. CU’s dependency on Booker to not only run the show but take shots and score points (took 35.9% of the Buffaloes shots when he Read more
