College Basketball Handicapping: Wisconsin and Illinois limp into tonight's contest

02.04.2014     07:51 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
After starting the season 16-0, Wisconsin has dropped five of its last six. Head coach Bo Ryan isn't panicking but rather taking a it-is-what-it-is approach as the Badgers head to Illinois (0-7 SU run) tonight. The defense has played a little better of late but a year removed from leading the Big Ten in defensive efficiency (0.90 ppp allowed), Wisky currently ranks 9th at 1.04.

"You're always looking for things that can shake guys out of the positions that they're in," Ryan said. "But you can't all of a sudden re-make a team. When you can take five possessions out of several of those games and if they go the other way -- four possessions, two possessions -- you're sitting on the other side. So they still have to believe in what they're doing. They still have to believe that if they position themselves correctly, block out, take care of the ball, I can't fault them there.

"They're taking care of the ball. They're getting decent looks. A couple times we had to take a hurried look because of a Read more

College Basketball Gambling: Notre Dame preps for Syracuse's zone

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Notre Dame at Syracuse -12 O/U 131

Notre Dame's Mike Brey talks about facing Syracuse's zone defense and having a nothing-to-lose attitude heading into tonight's game at the Carrier Dome.

"What I always tell our guys and when we've had success we gotta make double-digit threes. You gotta have your shooters looser than hell and ready to let it rip. We do some different kind of shooting drills leading up to that because I want them to feel that they're going to have to make shots over the top of that thing to feel like you got a shot."

“What a great opportunity for us,” Brey said. “We won’t have much of a shot up there. Maybe they’ll be number one in the country. But I sure like going up to Syracuse and competing Monday night after what happened (Saturday) than the alternative.

“We’ll go up there with a Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Montana Grizzlies at Montana State Bobcats

Montana -2 at Montanta State
Recommendation: Montana

Putting trust into Montana head coach Wayne Tinkle’s laser like focus on having his team’s defense tightly challenge every Bobcat three-point shooter this evening. Expect Montana to crowd the three-point arc and aim to take away Montana State’s primary scoring weapon. The Bobcats have four players averaging double digit minutes who shoot between 37.6%-44.8% from beyond the arc and with starting center Paul Eguonowu likely out again tonight, MSU will be very reliant upon their outside shooting. Montana’s methodical half-court, low possession style of game was executed extremely well Saturday night by 1-18 national doormat Southern Utah who nearly pulled off an upset. The 54-52 final indicates how Montana State’s faster pace can be frustrated and Montana has just enough veteran presence and ability to do that here. Level of overall play is the best it’s been all season for the Bobcats so expect a strong effort. Big Sky standings provide additional focus and motivation as they indicate wins are a necessity for Montana right now. The Grizzlies are on a 6-0 straight Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: St. Peter's Peacocks at Manhattan Jaspers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Note: Tonight's game has been canceled.

St. Peter's at Manhattan -13.5
Recommendation: Manhattan

Inopportune time for slumping St. Peter’s to visit conference power Manhattan which is off back-to-back losses. Even more frustrating for the Jaspers is the fact that their consecutive losses came against MAAC upper echelon teams Iona and Quinnipiac which dropped Manhattan from a first place tie down to a fourth place tie in the league standings. Tonight’s step down in class figures to be the perfect elixir for head coach Steve Masiello’s troops who already handled St. Peter’s rather easily 74-62 in Jersey City a month ago. The matchup of Manhattan’s stifling, pressure style defense versus the Peacocks mediocre, slow tempo offense was disastrous for St. Peter’s in that game as they shot a season low 29.8% from the field. In that game, SPU scored as many points from the free throw line (31) as they did from the floor. The huge number of fouls called on Manhattan (26) in that game were largely due to the Jaspers forcing a faster pace which led to 11 steals, 17 Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wise Guy Report: College Basketball Pointspread Juggernauts

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Super Bowl is in the rear view mirror after Sunday’s huge Seattle blowout, which can only mean one thing – college hoops is on center stage for the next eight weeks. I’ve been writing game previews for ESPN.com/Insider, but I’ve yet to write a true college basketball overview column so far this season. It’s time!

I’m going take a look at the four very best regular board pointspread teams in the country in this week’s column.  Elite level teams aren’t necessarily pointspread winners, and bottom feeders can cash ticket after ticket if the betting markets set numbers that allow them to hang within the number as big underdogs. And the very best pointspread teams tend to be under-the-radar type squads, like the single best ATS team in college hoops thusfar in the 2013-14 campaign.

Cleveland State has a decent record, sitting in a second place tie in the Horizon League standings with a 6-3 mark in conference; 15-9 SU overall. If the NCAA tournament started today, Gary Waters’ Vikings wouldn’t even sniff an at-large bid – they’ll need to win the league tournament to go Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Northwestern Wildcats at Minnesota Golden Gophers

Northwestern at Minnesota -10.5 O/U 124.5
Recommendation: Under

There are three very strong aspects of Northwestern basketball right now that have them trending under the total. For starters, they've succeeded in playing at a slow pace and shortening the game – a logical choice for a squad that is outmanned talent-wise nearly each and every night. Second is the Wildcats can't shoot. Last time out vs. Wisconsin, NW shot 50% from 2, 44% from 3, and 75% from the FT line – a near perfect performance by their standards that netted them a modest 65 points. Even with that showing, NW checks in at 0.84 ppp – a historical bad rate. Lastly, the Wildcats play sound team defense holding five of their last six foes to 40% or less effective FG%. Minnesota wants to push the pace but finding it difficult in the Big Ten (8th, 65.2 possessions per game). And Andre Hollins, the team’s top offensive option, it out with an ankle injury. I keep waiting Read more

College Basketball Handicapping: Injury Report 1-31-2014

Submitted by Brian Edwards

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Minnesota will be without its leading scorer again for Saturday's home game vs. Northwestern. Andre Hollins is recovering from an ankle injury sustained in the opening minute of a home win over Wisconsin on Jan. 22. Hollins averages 15.1 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.0 steals per game. He was unable to play earlier this week in an 82-78 loss at Nebraska.

Cincinnati senior center Justin Jackson returned to the lineup in Thursday's 69-66 win at Louisville. Jackson injured his ankle early in the first half of Sunday's win at Temple and didn't return. But he looked just fine against the Cardinals, producing 11 points, nine rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocked shots in 37 minutes of playing time. The Bearcats won outright as nine-point underdogs and hooked up money-line supporters with a +350 return (paid $350 on $100 wagers). If you didn't know already, now you do. Cincy is a legit national-title contender because it rebounds and defends as well as team in the country. And Mick Cronin has a senior leader in Sean Kilpatrick that dropped 29 points on U of L and always wants the rock at crunch time.

Rick Pitino's squad had been without Read more

A couple of college basketball notes worth passing along…

Washington State
Washington State junior guard DaVonte Lacy may return as early as this weekend when they host Washington on Saturday. Lacy has had a rough 2014 so far, missing time following surgery to remove his appendix, returning for 11 minutes and then injuring his ribs. And, without their best scorer and leader, the Cougars have been, well, just awful. While it remains to be seen if he’ll actually play on Saturday or possibly wait until next week, it will likely take some time for him to get back to full strength. And until he is back at full strength, the Cougs really don’t have much of a chance to compete on a regular basis. But, assuming he’s back to full strength by March, and assuming Que Johnson’s time in the spotlight has been put to good use, there’s a chance these guys are talented enough to spring an upset on day one of the Pac-12 Tournament. Maybe not a good chance, but a chance.

Delaware
Delaware appeared to be on the verge of running away with the CAA regular season title, but their chances took a big hit Read more
