College Basketball Betting: NC State looks to avoid letdown at Virginia

Another potentially
letdown situation
tonight for NC State who last time out snapped a 13-game losing streak to North Carolina. Earlier this season, the Wolfpack defeated Duke and then lost to Maryland the following game. In defense of NC State, Maryland has talent, was playing at home, and the Terps failed to cover -3 in the 51-50 victory. Virginia enters tonight 4-2 in ACC play with wins by 9, 30, 16, and 14. Last season the Cavaliers won 61-60 in Raleigh during the regular season but NC State won 67-64 in the first round of the ACC Tournament.
“This is new territory for our team, this is uncharted waters,” Wolfpack coach Mark Gottfried said during Monday's coaches teleconference. “We’ve got a lot of guys that have not been in these types of situations.

. You know what that means. Head coach Rick Pitino threw out the dreaded "must win" for tonight's game against Pitt.
“We have to get this win. It’s a must game for us,” Louisville coach Rick Pitino told reporters after Saturday’s loss. “Because four (losses in a row), now you’re on the verge of getting a sub-.500 record in the league, and you don’t want to mess with that.”

Earlier this season…
*The Arizona Wildcats needed some home cooking to steal a game from the Florida Gators in Tucson. Arizona was +12 in made free throws in a game they only won by a point. Note that Florida took 34 shots inside the arc, but was only sent to the charity stripe for eight free throw attempts. Arizona took 24 shots inside the arc but got to shoot 21 free throws. As others have pointed out (most notably Ken Pomeroy), that one result has warped the AP and coaches poll for weeks since.
*The Arizona Wildcats were fortunate to survive a neutral court naibliter against San Diego State. They won by one point despite getting outshot and outrebounded. Again, their ability to get to the line and make free throws helped.
*The Arizona Wildcats needed a MIRACLE to force overtime at home against Colorado. You probably remember the disputed three-pointer at the buzzer that led to the extra period.

Canisius
- A money earner during non-conference play (6-2 ATS) the betting markets caught up to the Golden Griffins who are on a 1-5 ATS slide in conference action.
Fairfield
- The Stags have been streaky. They failed to cover a single pointspread during November, ripped off five of their next six, but have struggled in MAAC play covering only one of their last six games.
Manhattan
- The Jaspers struggled mightily following the loss of do-everything guard George Beamon (16.8 ppg, 6.2 rpg) who was lost for the year in early December. But they've been ultra-competitive in MAAC play (+5 scoring through eight games) and as a result have cashed five of their last six tickets.
Niagara
- The Purple Eagles have morphed into a title contender with seven straight league wins. They covered all but one of those contests.

under head coach Tubby Smith. Smith has been criticized for not willing to take the blame when his teams fall short. He's also been known to
throw a player or two under the bus
. The Gophers have dropped three straight including a dismal 55-48 loss at Northwestern last time out. Interesting to note that this is Smith's six year and in Big Ten regular season play he's a dismal 41-55 SU and 41-54-1 ATS (not one winning season ATS). The Golden Gophers are 4-2 ATS vs. the Big Ten this year but as mentioned appear to be trending the other way. Minnesota travels to Wisconsin Saturday.

Cal State Northridge got off to a 6-0 start this year, all against lined, DI opponents. It didn’t end there. The Matadors hung tough with BYU in Provo and won SU at Utah and put together a furious rally to nearly upset a solid Hawaii team in Honolulu in their conference opener. Then the bottom dropped out.
Northridge has opened up Big West play by losing each of their first seven games. Their last pointspread cover came in that aforementioned loss at Hawaii, dropping each of their last six games ATS as well; consistently overvalued by the betting markets after that hot start.
The Matadors have two major weaknesses. First, they are as young as any team in all of DI basketball. Head coach Bobby Braswell: “Our young guys are going through a stretch that has been very difficult. The freshmen are struggling a bit. Their numbers are going down. It's the rigors of a long season. We warned them this would happen.”

Although the early money has come in support of Virginia, not sure I share that same enthusiasm. UVA on the road has not been a bankroll builder thus far as they failed outright as -5 at Wake Forest and were dismantled by 15 at Clemson. Their exceptional prowess on defense is fiercely combatted by their one trick pony offense. Virginia’s pedestrian attack which has little in the way of penetrating rim attackers and inside post presence depends much too heavily on three point shooting. That long range success has not traveled with them in ACC play shooting less than 30% in each of their road games. With no other matchup being problematic, expect Virginia Tech to focus on defending the arc here. Offensively the Hokies will likely find the going tough but they have the best scorer on the floor in senior guard Erick Greene (24.6 ppg). Coleman Coliseum will provide a raucous environment tonight

matchup. The Bruins have size but aren't particularly physical and as a result are -3.5 in rebounding margin through six conference games. Arizona has outrebounded 14 of its 17 opponents. According to Ken Pom, UCLA ranks 11th in the PAC-12 in offensive rebounding percentage (26.9) and 10th in offensive rebounding defense (34.2). Arizona meanwhile ranks second and first, respectively, in both categories.
