College Basketball Betting Free Play: San Diego Toreros at Gonzaga Bulldogs

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
San Diego +17.5 at Gonzaga O/U 133
Recommendation: San Diego

Gonzaga is, by far, the best team in the West Coast Conference.  They’ve been destroying their WCC foes all year, to the tune of a 16-0 conference record.  But the pointspread is the great equalizer, and the Zags are just 7-8-1 ATS in WCC play; not exactly a ‘bet-on’ team.
The Zags are coming off a HUGE come-from-behind win at St Mary’s last weekend, clinching the conference title and setting Gonzaga up as a possible #1 seed come tourney time.

Senior night comes against BYU on ESPN2 this coming Saturday, followed by the WCC Conference Tournament in Las Vegas next weekend.  In between, the Zags have nothing but this tricky matchup against San Diego; a clear flat spot on their schedule.

The Zags have had trouble building margins against the Toreros even when it’s not a flat spot.  In eight meetings between these two teams since the start of the 2012 campaign, the Zags have a grand total of one win by more than the 17 point margin they’ll need to win by tonight in order to cover the number.  Both Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: VCU Rams at Richmond Spiders

02.25.2015     11:09 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
VCU at Richmond +2 O/U 128.5
Recommendation: Richmond

The Rams’ bandwagon is back after a trio of solid victories (2-1 ATS) in which they posted 70+ points. Loss of star point guard Briante Weber now appears to be smoothed over in the minds of many as backup sophomore JeQuan Lewis has seemingly settled in as the head of VCU’s vaunted “Havoc” defense. Not so sure recent results carry over to this matchup where host Richmond has a multitude of ball handling guards who found no problems breaking the Rams press in this season’s earlier matchup. That contest played at VCU saw the Spiders commit just 12 turnovers (VCU forces an average of 17.2 per game) en route to a 64-55 victory as +9.5 point underdogs. Must also be noted that Rams steals king Weber played in that contest right until the closing minutes when he injured his knee so against VCU’s best, Richmond negated the press. Also have to recognize the success of Richmond’s defense in that contest as head coach Chris Mooney’s group used a combination of sticky perimeter defense and manageable tempo to frustrate VCU. The Rams shot a miserable 3-of-20, 15% Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Texas Longhorns at West Virginia Mountaineers

Texas +4.5 at West Virginia O/U 136.5
Recommendation: Texas

Going to step in play Texas at +4.5 (a few +5's available) as it heads to West Virginia this evening. Some bettors will undoubtedly point toward the revenge angle (UT won 77-50 in Austin) and the Longhorns' spotty play of late (back-to-back losses). But at the current price there is some value on the underdog as WVU enters off back-to-back upsets and doesn't match up particularly well against UT's front court. While Texas has plenty of weakness -- most notably a lack of consistency -- they do defend well in the paint. In their last two losses, Oklahoma and Iowa State shot a combined 28-of-77, 36.3% from two. What did them in what allowing 20 three-pointers. But unlike the Sooners and Cyclones, the Mountaineers don't have much of any outside shooting prowess. On the season, they've connected on only 30.9% of their three-point attempts. Another angle to consider is WVU's element of surprise, or lack thereof in this spot. In five "second meets" in Big XII pay, the Mountaineers have covered only once; against bottom feeder Texas Tech. Teams clearly know what to expect and while Texas Read more

College Basketball Betting: Nebraska wants to get season over with ASAP

02.23.2015     11:49 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Things continue to head south for Nebraska as always candid head coach Tim Miles banned his team from the locker room following Sunday's 74-46 loss to Iowa. Miles had already hinted the Cornhuskers wouldn't accept a bid to a secondary postseason tournament should they even qualify. They've now lost seven of eight. NU's only win and cover during that span was when it somehow managed to pop for 76 points in blowout win over Northwestern. In their other seven games, they averaged less than 50 ppg. They close out the regular season with road games at Ohio State and Illinois and a home finale vs. Maryland.

“You never want to throw your players under the bus, but that was just beyond disappointing,” Miles said. “That’s not what we represent. I told our guys, ‘when I was at Southwest Minnesota State, to pay for shoes we used to have to go to the Renaissance Festival in Shakopee, Minnesota for a weekend and pick up trash. We were the trash guys.

“And if

West Virginia at Oklahoma State -4 O/U 134.5
Recommendation: Under

Oklahoma State has been really consistent when it comes to pace this season regardless of opponent. In their last two games, against TCU and Iowa State,  there were 124 and 126 possessions respectively. That's very important when we consider how different both those squads are on the offensive end. When the Cowboys faced Big XII squads that play up-tempo (Iowa State, Kansas, Oklahoma) five of those six games went under the total. Those totals ranged from the mid-130’s to mid-140’s. No matter what the opposition, it’s hard to reach that mark when you prefer a slow pace, fail to average over a point per possession, and grade out as above average defensively. Statistically, West Virginia is the fastest team in the Big XII because they press and their games often feature an endless amount of free throws. But this is a different team on the road as three of their last four road games failed to top 130 (127, 124, 123, and 138 against Iowa State). Very important game for both sides, particularly Oklahoma State who desperately needs a victory after back-to-back losses. Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: St. Joseph's Hawks at Dayton Flyers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
St. Joseph's at Dayton -10 O/U 123.5
Recommendation: Dayton

Flyers head coach Archie Miller raised some eyebrows when he kicked his top two returning big men off the team before Christmas, dismissing Jalen Robinson and Devin Scott.  That came on the heels of a bum knee from a potential impact big man Detwon Rogers in preseason, that has kept him sidelined all year.  And  another potential upside big man Steve McElvene was ruled ineligible to play this season.

Miller clearly knew what he was doing.  Dayton has played with a collective fire in their bellies that’s been second to none in the A-10 since those dismissals.  They are 12-3 SU since the roster upheaval ad 8-4 ATS in their last dozen ballgames.  Two of the three losses have come by two points or less.  Nine of their twelve wins have come by double digit margins.

Miller had a gameplan when he kicked the malcontents off the squad, running three and four guard lineups out on the floor, relying on quickness and talent, not size. The results have been remarkable: strong shooting percentages, excellent production from beyond the Read more

College Basketball Gambling: UConn already eyeing conference tournament

02.19.2015     09:06 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It's that time of year where for some teams, the "writing is on the wall." Meaning the only way to get to the NCAA Tournament will be via a conference tournament title. Last year's champ, UConn, is faced with exactly that. The Huskies are 14-10 and 7-5 in AAC play with an RPI ranking of 80. They're a 2.5-point road underdog vs. Memphis tonight.

“It’s no secret,” senior guard Ryan Boatright pointed out, matter-of-factly. “That’s the only chance we’ve got.”

“We’re just trying to get better every day,” Boatright continued. “We’re trying to win as many games as possible, but just try to get better every day so that we’re ready for that tournament. It’s no secret that we’re gonna have to win that tournament to make the (NCAA) tournament.”

College Basketball Gambling: Arizona State student section provides extra homecourt edge

02.18.2015     01:20 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Well, this is interesting. Arizona State's student section uses this crazy curtain-like operation during opponent free throw attempts that statistics say gives ASU nearly a point-and-a-half worth of extra homecourt value. They're no doubt reaching with this one but worth checking out tonight as UCLA comes to town (6 pm PT, ESPN2).

Austin Tymins of the Harvard Sports Analysis Collective estimated that the visiting teams’ lowered accuracy—60.6 percent in the second half this season, versus 68.6 percent in the first—should result in a 1.41 points per game home advantage for ASU.
