College Basketball Handicapping: Florida down to six healthy scholarship players

12.03.2013     02:23 PM     Brian Edwards     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Brian Edwards

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Florida senior PG Scottie Wilbekin is out indefinitely with a high ankle sprain suffered in last night's buzzer-beating loss at UConn. With freshman PG Kasey Hill out for at least another two weeks, the Gators have only six healthy scholarship players and zero point guards. Obviously, that's not good with Kansas on deck a week from today at the O-Dome and then a date with Memphis (which just beat Oklahoma State) at Madison Square Garden.

Damontre Harris remains suspended and McDonald's All-American Chris Walker's status is still uncertain due to eligibility issues. UF did beat a pretty decent Middle Tennessee team by 20 without Wilbekin and Hill, as Michael Frazier II logged 36 minutes at the point. But Frazier isn't a natural PG, nor is Rutgers transfer Eli Carter (who remains out of shape due to a leg injury from last year that killed his off-season).

All that said, Hill will definitely be back before SEC play starts and I would think Wilbekin will be back by mid-to-late January in a worst-case scenario, probably sooner. So Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Baylor Bears vs. Dayton Flyers

Baylor -3 vs. Dayton O/U 145.5
Recommendation: Over

Have you seen the rims at the Maui Invitational? I lost track of home many extra points they were worth to today's Arkansas-Minnesota game. Offhand I saw two threes that on any other rims in the country would have careened out of bounds and yet they went in. Then you throw in the fact that teams are playing in a back-to-back situation – tired, loose with the ball, poor rotations, missed box outs, etc. Add in the extra fouls and these games have been a perfect storm for OVERS. Of course it helps when you have two teams willing to push the pace. Baylor has actually played at a rather average pace thus far but last night we saw the Bears ramp it up to 74 possessions in their 93-77 win over Chaminade. Dayton has gone over 70 possessions in all but one game. And the Flyers scored 80+ against Georgia Tech and Gonzaga. We've seen a few teams in this tournament go zone with the hopes of staying out of foul trouble and we could see that tonight. But note that both squads are shooting above 40% from three-point range. A lo of factors favor points and even with some line adjustment, it won't keep me from Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Oklahoma State Cowboys at USF Bulls

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Oklahoma State -9.5 at South Florida O/U 150.5
Recommendation: Under

You rarely see South Florida get baited into an up-tempo game. Under Stan Heath, the Bulls have been one of slowest teams in the country on a yearly basis. This is by design as Heath's inability recruit offensive talent leaves USF needing to grind it out, play defense, and hope for the best against superior foes.  It looks like guard Corey Allen (16.5 ppg) could be a nice addition – and by nice addition I mean someone who can actually shoot above 45% from the floor. But even with the rule changes (and move to AAC) USF will still struggle to score on most nights.

Oklahoma State isn't shy about pushing the pace but they aren't BYU. And unlike the Cougars, the Cowboys do play defense – you'll likely see them in the top 10 in efficiency for much of the season. OSU has named the score in its first four games but I don't expect things to run as smoothly on the road against a team that will defend.

It is hard to put any stock in last year's results just because the game is being played so differently. However, when these two teams hooked up in Stillwater, Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Oklahoma Sooners vs. Seton Hall Pirates

Oklahoma vs. Seton Hall
Recommendation: Seton Hall

Let's take a look at the Seton Hall Pirates as they take the short trip over to Brooklyn to face a very young Oklahoma squad. Last year was a tough one for Kevin Willard and the Hall as a rash of injuries left the team with little chance in Big East play (3-15). This year they're off to a 3-1 start with a loss in double overtime at Mercer. The Bears are certainly no slouch after winning 24 games a year ago including victories over Florida State, Alabama, and Tennessee on the road. They returned four starters from that group so I actually give credit to Seton Hall for their performance. Also have to like that Seton Hall is averaging over 38 free throws per game – a lot of these early season games have been decided by who wins the trips the charity stripe battle. As mentioned, OU is a very young team and showed well to open the season with a win over Alabama. But I'm not very high on the Crimson Tide and the Sooners were catching +4 in that contest and now laying over a bucket. I also read a somewhat interesting article about Oklahoma's feelings on the tournament and the focus seemed to be on the Read more

College Basketball Gambling: Notre Dame seeks A-game vs. Santa Clara

11.22.2013     07:20 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Notre Dame will look to bounce back after having suffering a rare non-conference home loss to Indiana State. The Irish play host to Santa Clara who are without its best player Evan Roquemore (back). Note that the Irish also had a ho-hum 12 point win over Miami-Ohio who lost to Arizona State by 36 and Xavier by 26.

"We've gotten back and competed, and what I've liked is we've played pissed off, which is a good trait to have after a loss," Brey said. "We haven't hung our heads."

"Your sense of urgency goes up when you get beat like that," Brey said. "We've got guys that have been around awhile and we've got guys that have taken punches before. One of the things you talk about is, 'What is your bounce-back mode?' We've never really had to deal with it in November, but now we do. Let's use it as a teaching moment to see how we'll respond.

"We've had good practices, good energy. When you lose like (we did) Sunday, you'd like to play Monday. Friday is a long way away."

Dude busted for coming up with bogus point shaving scandal

11.21.2013     08:11 AM     Printer Friendly
We somehow missed this from a few weeks back but here’s a hilarious story about a guy busted for trying to blackmail Louisville. He claimed he had information regarding some sort of point shaving scandal and get this, asked for $3.5 million in hush money. The Cardinals were 24-16 against the spread during the season in "question."

“This email was one notch above a Nigerian cousin,” Conway said in reference to a common Internet scam.

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Texas State Bobcats at SMU Mustangs

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Texas State at SMU -13
Recommendation: SMU

SMU is deep, with nine different players averaging double digit minutes in their first three games and all five starters back from last year’s squad. They have a strong backcourt led by Nic Moore and Nick Russell. Frosh sensation Keith Frazier – the first McDonald’s All American to ever play for SMU – should be back in the lineup tonight after missing their game at Arkansas on Monday.

For their first two games, the Mustangs defense was nothing short of stellar; both in transition and in the halfcourt; completely shutting down TCU and Rhode Island in their first two games (33% shooting allowed).  But they laid a real stinker on Monday Night, unable to defend the three point line or to avoid turnovers leading to easy transition buckets in a hostile environment against Arkansas’s pressure defense.

Expect a strong bounceback effort from Larry Brown’s squad here; a team I’m looking to support off a shoddy showing, especially as they step down in class tonight.  Texas State is 0-3 because they haven’t played a lick of defense, allowing Read more

College Basketball Betting Preview: Iowa State Cyclones at BYU Cougars

11.20.2013     07:58 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
A ton of angles to consider for tonight's Iowa State-BYU matchup. From a situational standpoint, the spot favors the home side as the Cougars are in a revenge mode after last year's 83-62 loss in Ames. The Cyclones are also off a big over Michigan and head on the road (to elevation) for the first time this year with a host of new players. On the flip side, ISU can score and BYU has had its struggles on the defensive end of the floor. Up 20 with 13 minutes to go against Weber State, the Cougars allowed the Wildcats to climb back in it late and failed to cover the closing number in a nine-point win. Going back to last season, BYU allowed the quality offenses of Gonzaga, St. Mary's, Washington, Santa Clara, and San Francisco to top 1.03 points per possession at the Marriott Center. Also a factor is the health of BYU's Tyler Haws (29.5 ppg) who missed the last two Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: East Carolina Pirates at Duke Blue Devils

East Carolina at Duke -23.5
Recommendation: Duke

East Carolina knows it is lucky to be in this spot after rallying back from 17 down in the second half to clip Norfolk State by two. I give credit to the Pirates for fighting back but a vast majority of their win had to do with Norfolk's shortcomings (2-of-14 from 3, 10-of-20 from the line including multiple misses in crunch time). No question ECU put forth a ton of effort in that comeback win and with no rest they must turnaround and face a Duke squad that has had no trouble handling lesser competition. The Blue Devils have wins by 34, 33, and 36 on their home court. And to me, ECU is not far removed personnel wise to that of Davidson, Florida Atlantic, and UNC Asheville. Also note that as Jeff Lebo has built up the ECU program, he's been pretty active is staying away from top-tier competition. In 2011, they faced Clemson (No. 22 Ken Pom) and last year lost by six at North Carolina (No. 32). With the exception of Memphis in C-USA, those are arguably the two toughest teams ECU has faced in three-plus years – and this year’s version of Duke is far better than all three. And East Carolina was Read more
