NCAA Tournament Handicapping: Mercer focused on defensive variety vs. Duke

03.20.2014     11:42 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Mercer vs. Duke -12.5 O/U 140.5

Mercer's focus heading into Friday's first round matchup vs. Duke seems to be centered around defense – in particular shutting down Jabari Parker. Mercer allowed an Atlantic Sun-best 0.94 points per possession in league play. In step-up games against Texas, Seton Hall, Oklahoma, and Ole Miss, the Bears allowed 1.04, 0.89, 1.34, and 1.08 respectively.

“We’ve got a lot of different schemes we’re going to throw at him, a lot of different defenses that we’re going to throw at Duke in general, because he’s obviously one of their best players,” Gollon said. “They’ve got a bunch of guys that are really good.

“We’ve got some different stuff we’re going to throw at them, but more than anything, we’ve just got to lock down and play good team defense. We’ve always been a good defensive team.”

NCAA Tournament Betting Free Play: North Dakota State Bison vs. Oklahoma Sooners

North Dakota State +3.5 vs. Oklahoma O/U 152
Recommendation: North Dakota State

North Dakota State has been priced as this short of an underdog for a very good reason – they are very live to win this game outright! The Bison are 25-6 overall and have the nation's #1 offense in terms of field goal percentage connecting on 50.9% of their shots. North Dakota State has a very good senior center in Marshall Bjorklund and a dynamic scorer in Taylor Braun and both should cause tons of problems for an Oklahoma squad that has struggled on the defensive end of the court allowing 75.9 points per game on 43.5% shooting. The Sooners lack an inside presence defensively and they don't force many turnovers. Oklahoma will score plenty of points because they too have a strong offense but because of their defensive holes it is going to be very difficult to win this contest by even the slimmest of margins. The Sooners got bounced in the first round of last Read more

NCAA Tournament Gambling: Odds of a perfect bracket

03.19.2014     09:30 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Every March, talks surface about the odds of filling out a perfect bracket. The common number used by the media is 1 in 9.2 quintillion – whatever that means. But one statistician argues the odds are significantly "lower" just based on the 16th seed not winning a game.

College Basketball Betting: SMU out to prove selection committee wrong

03.19.2014     08:42 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
UC Irvine at SMU -9.5 O/U 132

One of the more obvious snubs of the NCAA Tournament, SMU's Larry Brown will try to rally his troops for tonight's NIT matchup against UC Irvine. Quotes indicate the team is hell bent on proving the selection committee (or as we like to call them, gang of Muppets) wrong.

“I’m not going to get into if we were slighted or not,” Brown said. “The only thing I want to prove is that we’re man enough to understand that we’ve got to learn from this and get better.”

“We can prove a lot, but we have to win games to do that,” senior guard Nick Russell said. “If we don’t come out and play high-powered basketball, then the committee wins. We’ve just got to keep pushing, play better basketball and win.”

ESPN The Magazine tackles San Diego point shaving scandal

Excelled article in ESPN The Magazine on the San Diego point shaving scandal.

As Johnson's grievances got louder, Brown began throwing money on the Toreros to lose. Five grand, 10 grand a game, whatever he could max out. His bets were paying off so big that a local bookmaker eventually refused to take his action, suspecting Brown had a pipeline to the locker room that gave him an unfair edge.

NCAA Tournament Gambling: Albany concerned over lack of prep time

03.18.2014     08:15 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Mountain St. Mary's vs. Albany -2.5 O/U 140

Two non-boarded teams kick off tonight's NCAA Tournament play-in game action with 16 seeds Mount St. Mary's taking on Albany. In terms of rest and prep time, MSM has the advantage having wrapped up the Northeastern Conference Tournament last Tuesday. Albany meanwhile beat Stony Brook in the American East championship game on Saturday.

"My main concern is that we just finished a tough game and have to play on Tuesday and (Mount St. Mary's) have had a week off," Brown said. "I need the prep time. We don't know that much about them so the prep is the biggest thing. These kids deserve to be prepared. I do know that they press and trap for 40 minutes and play up-tempo basketball."

NCAA Tournament Betting: Opposing coach says NC Central is no joke

03.18.2014     08:08 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
NC Central vs. Iowa State -9 O/U 144

According to NC State assistant coach Bobby Lutz, 14th seed NC Central is the real deal and capable of giving Iowa State a game in Friday's first round matchup. Lutz has connections to both teams having served as an assistant under ISU's Fred Hoiberg and now an assistant for NC State. Back in late November, the Wolfpack lost to NC Central in Raleigh, 82-72 (OT).

“Don’t sleep on North Carolina Central,” said Lutz, an original member of Fred Hoiberg’s Cyclones coaching staff. “I’m confident Iowa State will win the game, but it’s not going to be easy.”

“Man-to-man defense, zone, box-and-one, and maybe even a little triangle-and-2,” Lutz continued. “I’m telling you, they’re solid.”

NCAA Tournament Gambling: Rob Veno's Power Ratings vs. Actual Seeds

Submitted by Rob Veno blog entry.
Here is an interesting take on the NCAA Tournament. Sportsmemo Rob Veno put together a comparison of the tournament seeds vs. his power ratings. For example, the selection committee has VCU as a no. 5 seed whereas Rob's power ratings show the Rams to be a no. 8 seed. Note that the West Region has seven teams with a differential of 3 or more making it by far the region with the largest amount of discrepancies.
