College Basketball Betting Free Play: Southern Utah Thunderbirds at San Diego Toreros

Southern Utah at San Diego -21.5
Recommendation: San Diego

Southern Utah is arguably the worst DI team in the country. Their losses this year have come by margins of 33, 28, 15 (vs. Riverside at home), 29, 22, and 37. There was some decent competition is that bunch but there was also Northridge and Portland – two teams not that far removed from tonight's opponent San Diego. The Toreros have had a tough schedule of late with competitive losses to New Mexico, San Diego State, and UC Santa Barbara. A quick glance at USD’s resume suggests it isn't capable of laying this type of price with non-blowout wins over Grand Canyon, Morgan State, Greensboro and Southern Illinois. They did however wax Northern Kentucky on the road and trust me when I say all of those aforementioned teams are significantly stronger than Southern Utah. There aren't many of them but the Thunderbirds are a squad that you simply bet against every opportunity in non-conference play. Once Big Sky play starts, you'll see them compete in a handful of contests but tonight there's a class difference and the home squad can name the score.

Nebraska-Omaha at Minnesota -15.5 O/U 156
Recommendation: See write-up

I'm expecting an up-tempo affair tonight with Nebraska-Omaha heading to Minnesota. Omaha is one of the country's fastest teams at nearly 75 possessions per game. And not only do they play fast, but they are also efficient (1.06 ppp, 51.3 effective FG%, 76.5 FT%). On the flip side, they don't play much in the way of defense as Iowa, Drake, Bakersfield and Nevada all topped the 80-point mark. Minnesota first-year head coach Richard Pitino wants to play up-tempo basketball but due to their opponents (a handful of moderately paced teams) and the Gophers' personnel, it had yet to really play out. But there have been signs. Coastal Carolina, who can’t score like UNO, prefers to run and played to 71 possessions (154 points) vs. Minnesota. UM's game against Arkansas produced 160 points and 72 possessions. This game marks a perfect storm of sorts for Minny's offense to unload: at home, vs. a team that likes to run and doesn't play much defense. One thing I've noticed with playing games over that are projected to be up-tempo is that the first half tends to have a nice flow whereas the Read more

Cincinnati vs. Pittsburgh (at MSG)
Recommendation: Cincinnati +3 1st half

It is common knowledge that when Cincinnati plays a comparable foe, the Bearcats are going to struggle to put the ball in the basket. But over the last two games, things have gone from not-so-good to historically bad. Against New Mexico and Xavier, the Bearcats shot 23-of-73...from 2-point range! And going up against Pittsburgh is far from an ideal situation for a dramatic turnaround. But while I'm well aware that points will likely be at a premium, what I do expect to improve is Cinci's effort. Every quote you read following last Saturday's loss to rival Xavier wasn’t so much on the score but the lack of fight – which under Mick Cronin is rarely an issue.

“It’s inexcusable,” said Cronin, who’s now 3-5 vs. Xavier. “We’re not tough enough on the defensive end. We’re not tough enough to get the ball to the open man when teams are doing whatever they’re doing defensively to us. Really, anything that involves toughness right now is a real big problem for our team.”

Dartmouth at Fort Wayne -6.5
Recommendation: Fort Wayne

Following Illinois' 57-55 win over Fort Wayne, head coach John Groce had nothing but praise for the Mastodons.

“I saw that over the past two days (of watching film),” Groce explained. “I thought ‘Oh boy, these guys are a team.’ They really gel well together at both ends of the floor.”

“They were really physical,” Groce said. “They beat us to loose balls. They played really, really well.”

IPFW should have won the game had it not been for a 2-of-13 effort from the free throw line.

This showing however wasn't an isolated incident as IPFW lost on a buzzer-beater three at Dayton to start the year – and we know the Flyers are a quality basketball team.

But as with a lot of mid-major teams, getting up for the big boys isn't hard, it's staying focused against comparable competition – hence why IPFW has losses at Texas A&M Corpus Christi and Miami-Ohio. The loss to Miami last time out was a home run spot for the RedHawks though IPFW had a 16 point second half lead Read more

Boston College +4 at Purdue O/U 151.5
Recommendation: Boston College

Purdue hasn't done much of anything this year to be deserving of this price range for tonight's game against Boston College. The Boilermakers struggled against the likes of Northern Kentucky, Rider, Siena (twice), and also lost outright by 15 points to a bottom-tier Washington State squad. Head coach Matt Painter on his team's struggles: “I’ve never, as an assistant or a head coach, been with a team that can show such promise in one half and the other half lose their focus or not make winning basketball plays, not tough it out on a certain possession,” to this extent, Painter said. “It’s a hard thing, and it’s a positive that you show that you can be successful, but it’s also a negative in terms of when things don’t go your way, you’re not able to right the ship. You have to show more consistency.”

The reason for the inconsistency as well as last year's sub .500 finish is easy to pinpoint – Painter just doesn't have the talent he's accustoming to working with in West Lafayette.

Baylor -3 vs. Dayton O/U 145.5
Recommendation: Over

Have you seen the rims at the Maui Invitational? I lost track of home many extra points they were worth to today's Arkansas-Minnesota game. Offhand I saw two threes that on any other rims in the country would have careened out of bounds and yet they went in. Then you throw in the fact that teams are playing in a back-to-back situation – tired, loose with the ball, poor rotations, missed box outs, etc. Add in the extra fouls and these games have been a perfect storm for OVERS. Of course it helps when you have two teams willing to push the pace. Baylor has actually played at a rather average pace thus far but last night we saw the Bears ramp it up to 74 possessions in their 93-77 win over Chaminade. Dayton has gone over 70 possessions in all but one game. And the Flyers scored 80+ against Georgia Tech and Gonzaga. We've seen a few teams in this tournament go zone with the hopes of staying out of foul trouble and we could see that tonight. But note that both squads are shooting above 40% from three-point range. A lo of factors favor points and even with some line adjustment, it won't keep me from Read more

Oklahoma State -9.5 at South Florida O/U 150.5
Recommendation: Under

You rarely see South Florida get baited into an up-tempo game. Under Stan Heath, the Bulls have been one of slowest teams in the country on a yearly basis. This is by design as Heath's inability recruit offensive talent leaves USF needing to grind it out, play defense, and hope for the best against superior foes.  It looks like guard Corey Allen (16.5 ppg) could be a nice addition – and by nice addition I mean someone who can actually shoot above 45% from the floor. But even with the rule changes (and move to AAC) USF will still struggle to score on most nights.

Oklahoma State isn't shy about pushing the pace but they aren't BYU. And unlike the Cougars, the Cowboys do play defense – you'll likely see them in the top 10 in efficiency for much of the season. OSU has named the score in its first four games but I don't expect things to run as smoothly on the road against a team that will defend.

It is hard to put any stock in last year's results just because the game is being played so differently. However, when these two teams hooked up in Stillwater, Read more

Oklahoma vs. Seton Hall
Recommendation: Seton Hall

Let's take a look at the Seton Hall Pirates as they take the short trip over to Brooklyn to face a very young Oklahoma squad. Last year was a tough one for Kevin Willard and the Hall as a rash of injuries left the team with little chance in Big East play (3-15). This year they're off to a 3-1 start with a loss in double overtime at Mercer. The Bears are certainly no slouch after winning 24 games a year ago including victories over Florida State, Alabama, and Tennessee on the road. They returned four starters from that group so I actually give credit to Seton Hall for their performance. Also have to like that Seton Hall is averaging over 38 free throws per game – a lot of these early season games have been decided by who wins the trips the charity stripe battle. As mentioned, OU is a very young team and showed well to open the season with a win over Alabama. But I'm not very high on the Crimson Tide and the Sooners were catching +4 in that contest and now laying over a bucket. I also read a somewhat interesting article about Oklahoma's feelings on the tournament and the focus seemed to be on the Read more

East Carolina at Duke -23.5
Recommendation: Duke

East Carolina knows it is lucky to be in this spot after rallying back from 17 down in the second half to clip Norfolk State by two. I give credit to the Pirates for fighting back but a vast majority of their win had to do with Norfolk's shortcomings (2-of-14 from 3, 10-of-20 from the line including multiple misses in crunch time). No question ECU put forth a ton of effort in that comeback win and with no rest they must turnaround and face a Duke squad that has had no trouble handling lesser competition. The Blue Devils have wins by 34, 33, and 36 on their home court. And to me, ECU is not far removed personnel wise to that of Davidson, Florida Atlantic, and UNC Asheville. Also note that as Jeff Lebo has built up the ECU program, he's been pretty active is staying away from top-tier competition. In 2011, they faced Clemson (No. 22 Ken Pom) and last year lost by six at North Carolina (No. 32). With the exception of Memphis in C-USA, those are arguably the two toughest teams ECU has faced in three-plus years – and this year’s version of Duke is far better than all three. And East Carolina was Read more

Rice at Texas A&M -18
Recommendation: Texas A&M

In 2012, Rice was a nice story with 19 wins and two postseason victories. But the following year six players left the program including Arsalan Kazemi who proved to be a high-quality DI player during his time at Oregon. It is one thing for players to leave when a program bottoms out but it isn't a good sign following a season head coach Ben Braun had been spent three years working towards. Not surprising, last year was a mess as the Owls posted just one conference win and lost by single digits on only four occasions. Heading into this year, Rice lost its top two scorers and rebounders and Braun was forced to reload once again. In their season opener, the Owls shot less than 40% in a nine-point win over NAIA St. Thomas. And last time out, in what was a huge red flag, the Owls were beat on their home floor by Southeastern Louisiana who opened the season with an 89-53 loss at Missouri. Texas A&M has looked sharp in the early going with an 82-58 win over Buffalo and 91-67 win over Mississippi Valley State. The Aggies lost Elston Turner but returned four players with starting experience. Turner's Read more
