College Basketball Betting Free Play: Arizona State Sun Devils at Washington Huskies

Arizona State -2 at Washington O/U 145.5
Recommendation: Over

Since the departure of Robert Upshaw we've seen Washington take on a completely different identity. The Huskies have been forced to play as many as four guards and an undersized forward and their defense has suffered as a result. Eliminated their game against offensively inept Oregon State and without Upshaw, Washington has allowed 1.20 points per possession in every game. In those four games, teams averaged 84.5 ppg. You also have to question where this team is at mentally after suffering back-to-back blowout losses. Arizona State has been up and down for much of the season but has shown much more ability to score after failing to crack 60 in its first four PAC-12 contests. Over their last seven games, the Sun Devils have averaged 74.1 ppg with a number of those games played at a fast tempo. Both teams aren't even close to being in the postseason discussion and with this being their second game in three days, I don't project much in the way of defensive intensity. Play it over.

West Virginia at Iowa State -7 O/U 158.5
Recommendation: Under

They'll no doubt be a lot of pace and points in this afternoon's West Virginia-Iowa State game but oddsmakers aren't messing around by opening this game 160. It's since been bet down slightly to 158.5 but I see a few factors that make playing the under worth a bet. For starters, Iowa State talked all week about shoring up its leaky defense. That doesn't mean they're going to start holding teams in the 60's as their games are way too fast for that. But at home off of allowing 94 points to Oklahoma, I expect a much better effort. Next, West Virginia doesn't have a very efficient offense. In fact, the Mountaineers are averaging less than a point per possession in Big XII play. And it's important to note that not one WVU Big XII game has topped 158 in regulation. In the first meeting between these two squads there was a fair amount of pace (144 possession) and points 146 but it went under the closing total of 150. Neither team has changed much of all since that game back in mid-January and yet today's total is eight points higher. In order for this game to go over the total you'll need close Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Tennessee Volunteers at Vanderbilt Commodores

Tennessee +6 at Vanderbilt O/U 126.5
Recommendation: Tennessee

Recent results suggest that Tennessee and Vanderbilt are headed in opposite directions but the reality is these two teams have played a lot of close, competitive basketball where the straight up results appear to be more random than anything. The Commodores enter off back-to-back wins, including a blowout over a wounded South Carolina squad. The Vols meanwhile have lost four of five but those defeats came by margins of 6, 5, 5, and 3. I'd be concerned if this team was getting outplayed but the level of effort is still there night in and night out, they just happen to come out on the losing end. Make no mistake, this team has flaws, particularly on offense but the current price indicates that Vandy is the better of the two squads which I'm not sure is the case. Consider this: Vanderbilt was laying -3 vs. South Carolina this past weekend and now -6 vs. Tennessee. The Gamecocks are for whatever reason still "respected" due to non-conference wins over Oklahoma State and Iowa State. Tennessee is void of any marquee wins but unlike USC, the Vols show up each and every night and have a Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Xavier Musketeers at Marquette Golden Eagles

Xavier -3 at Marquette O/U 137
Recommendation: Under

Xavier has been one of the tougher teams in the country to handicap from a totals perspective. The pace of their games is typically fairly quick but their offense and defense comes and goes on a weekly basis. Tonight, they head to Marquette for a critical game as the Musketeers sit 15-9 and 6-6 in Big East play. The Golden Eagles meanwhile continue to fight despite being short on depth and talent. They've lost five Big East games that came down to the final two minutes of play. Veteran guard Matt Carlino missed Marquette's last game and while they managed to win at Seton Hall, the team shot 1-of-10 from three and netted only 57 points. Carlino (concussion) is questionable tonight and if he is ruled out, expect the market to knock this total down a point or two. But even if he does suit up, Marquette is far more comfortable grinding out games and trying to keep things close. They simply can't match Xavier from an offensive perspective if this game is played in transition. I think the first meeting is very indicative of what we'll see tonight: 124 possessions and 120 points -- and that was Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: USC Trojans at Stanford Cardinal

USC at Stanford -14 O/U 147
Recommendation: Under

Market seems to have created an opportunity by betting USC-Stanford four points over the total. I can understand the thought behind it with USC's willing to play fast and Stanford's offensive prowess and lackluster defense of late. But the situation suggests this won't be a pick-up game. The Cardinals have lost back-to-back games and with the dreaded "elevation" road trip upcoming, this becomes an absolute must-win. The first meeting was a perfect offensive storm with a lot of pace (146 possessions), threes (15), and turnovers (28). The end result was 154 points. But note that the closing total in that contest was 132. Less than a month later it's 15 points higher leaving little to no margin for error. In the end, USC's below average offensive efficiency, Stanford's expected focus/energy level, and a potential double-digit margin late make a play on the under worthy of a wager.

Syracuse at Pittsburgh -3.5 O/U 130
Recommendation: Over

Historically, Syracuse and Pitt have played plenty of grinders including last year's two meetings that produced 113 and 114 points. But this year's versions are miles away which is why you are seeing a total of 130. News came out earlier this week that the Orange have been banned from the postseason. I don't think much will change, at least in the immediate future. They've been going through the motions for much of the season despite their smoke-and-mirrors 6-3 ACC record. Pitt meanwhile has shown a little more fight but the talent level is way down and as a result, the Panthers are one of the worst teams in the ACC defensively. Despite playing at snail's pace, Pitt has topped this total in eight straight games. And Syracuse is playing at a very fast clip (66.5 poss per game vs. ACC) even with their defensive possessions taking so long because of the zone. As a result of being so poor in the halfcourt, the Orange have been desperate to pick up as many easy buckets as possible. This is not going to be the most aesthetically pleasing game on the card but expect enough points to top this very Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Rutgers Scarlet Knights at Illinois Fighting Illini

Rutgers at Illinois -11.5 O/U 126.5
Recommendation: Under

Illinois has managed to survive without the services or Rayvonte Rice (7 games) and Aaron Cosby (3 games), both of whom are suspended for tonight's game. As a result, they've slowed down the tempo some and upped their game on the defensive end of the floor. They've held Maryland, Nebraska, Purdue, and Penn State to less than a point per possession and should continue that trend tonight as Rutgers sports arguably the worst offense in the Big Ten. The Scarlet Knights have netted 50, 51, 51, and 64 points their last four games. The 64-point effort came against Indiana which hasn't played much if any defense this season. Adding to Knights' struggles is the fact that they are playing their third game in six nights and using essentially a five-and-a-half-man rotation. Against the Hoosiers, Rutgers' starting five all played 34 minutes or more. Back on the road, their only option is to slow down the pace of the game and hope to knock down just enough shots to stay within striking distance. Current pointspread suggests we could avoid late fouls which puts us on the under.

Vanderbilt at Texas A&M -5 O/U 127.5
Recommendation: Texas A&M

Despite winning five straight and covering four of five, there appears to still be a bit of value on Texas A&M as it plays host to Vanderbilt this afternoon. The Aggies are a veteran squad that is on the upswing after a not-so-impressive showing during non-conference play. Wins at LSU and Tennessee really grabbed my attention and last time out, they completely controlled the game in a 10-point win at Auburn. “I knew we were mentally prepared as a team because our approach was different,” said junior guard Danuel House. “Every player was locked in and was in tune to the game and there wasn’t a lot of chatter. We got a taste of winning and we like the taste of success. The scary thing is we worked so hard to get here, let’s not get too complacent and just let it slip from under our feet. Winning on the road just boosts the crowd for when you get home.” Vanderbilt is a very young team and has competed well in most of its SEC games. But you can see the tough losses (six straight) and mid-season fatigue are starting to wear on this Read more
