NCAA Tournament Gambling Free Pick: Gonzaga Bulldogs vs. Utah Utes

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Gonzaga -2 vs. Utah O/U 139
Recommendation: Under

Both teams played it close to the vest in the first round as Gonzaga won a 68-52 grinder over Seton Hall and Utah did the same against Fresno State. The lone difference was the Zags avoided the dreaded late foul fest and went way under the total while the Utes traded baskets and free throws against a desperate Fresno squad that made a late rally. Keep in mind the Utah-Fresno game was 33-22 at half but both teams combined for 94 points after the break. Utah played zone against Fresno for most of the game while running the offense inside-out through center Jakob Poeltl. Those are two factors that will help towards the under. Gonzaga will try to do the same thing with center Domantas Sabonis who took a team-high 20 field attempts against Seton Hall. I'm projecting the game to be in the low 60's possession wise which gives us wiggle room to play under on the current total of 139.

College Basketball Betting Free Pick: Montana Grizzlies at Nevada Wolf Pack

Montana at Nevada -3.5 O/U 138.5
Recommendation: Nevada

Ultra-tough spot for Montana tonight as it travels right back to Reno after losing in heartbreaking fashion to Weber State in the Big Sky Tournament finals. Following the loss, the team was split on whether or not they even wanted to play in a postseason tournament. In the end, they decided to give it a go but it's clear the sting of not making the NCAA Tournament hit this team hard. Now they must go back on the road to uneventful Reno, Nevada and try to get up for the meaningless CBI Tournament. Supporting teams in these secondary tournaments with first-year head coaches isn't a bad profile. Eric Musselman took over a nine-win team and got them to 19-13 and a winning record inside the Mountain West. The Wolf Pack are still without a healthy Marqueze Coleman who was a non-factor in the MWC Tournament. And they've had a difficult time winning by margin this season with three overtime victories and five others by three or less. Nine times out of ten I believe all of the distractions and situationals get tossed out once the whistle blows, but there's a strong potential for a no-show from the road Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Pick: Texas A&M Aggies at Missouri Tigers

Texas A&M -9.5 at Missouri O/U 140.5
Recommendation: Over

I see no quit in the Missouri Tigers despite another season of issues. They sit 10-18 overall and 3-12 in SEC play but have quietly covered six straight games thanks to an uptick in offensive output. The first half of the SEC schedule, Mizzou barely averaged over 60 ppg, including a 53-point output against tonight's opponent Texas A&M. But since then, they've hung 70+ in seven consecutive contests which has in turn resulted in cashed tickets as an underdog and on the over. Efficiency wise, the Tigers are only slightly better than they were two months ago. The increase is scoring actually has more to do with pace as their games have averaged over 70 possessions over their last six games. It's pretty apparent that Kim Anderson is telling his kids to go have fun and play hard. And as silly as it sounds, losing a game 80-70 is probably a lot easier pill to swallow than some of the low scoring, bloodbaths of last season. Scoring and pace however won't be automatics tonight as A&M tends to play slow while also defending at above average level. They have however been willing to play an Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Pick: Rutgers Scarlet Knights at Illinois Fighting Illini

Rutgers at Illinois
Recommendation: First half Under 68

Rutgers, who has struggled to score for much of the season, will be without the Big Ten's top "usage" player in Corey Sanders (suspended). Sanders leads the Scarlet Knights in virtually every offensive statistical category and netted 39 points in the team's triple OT loss to Illinois two weeks ago. It's not just Sanders' point production that will be missed but also a player who dominates the ball throughout the game. I think a lot of Sanders' production is of the de facto variety but his absence will likely be felt. As for Illinois, injuries have become such a problem that the team is now experimenting with Malcolm Hill at point guard. Hill is Illinois' top offensive weapon and rather than playing him off the ball and working to get him shots, he's being asked to run the offense and score. The move didn't exactly pan out on Saturday as Hill failed to reach double-digits for the first time this season and the Illini were held to a season-low 56 at Northwestern. So why did this total get steamed from 141.5 to 145? Well, you have two of the league's worst defenses involved for starters. Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Pick: UT-Arlington Mavericks at Georgia State Panthers

UT-Arlington at Georgia State -1 O/U 139.5
Recommendation: Over

Georgia State has talked a lot about finding easier ways to score including the occasional fast break opportunity. It's no doubt been a grind as the Panthers rank 11th in the Sun Belt in offensive efficiency (0.96 ppp). Last time out, they beat Texas State despite failing to crack 60 and prior to that were held to 53 in a road loss at Arkansas-Little Rock. Tonight's opponent, however, serves as an opportunity for GSU to run a little bit and also score some points. UT-Arlington is one of the fastest teams in the country and routinely plays games in the 150's and above. Eight out of their 10 Sun Belt games topped 140 including the first meeting between the two schools as UTA won 85-70 (76 possessions). Thing are a little different this time around as UTA lost Kevin Hervey (18.1 ppg) for the year back in late January. The Mavericks had a "hump up" effort the first game without Hervey as they crushed Arkansas State 91-64. But since then, UTA has dropped four straight and allowed 84.8 ppg in the process. Keep in mind this was a squad that earlier this year held Ohio State to 68 and Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Pick: Austin Peay Governors at Southeast Missouri RedHawks

Austin Peay -6 at Southeast Missouri State O/U 142
Recommendation: Under

Southeast Missouri first-year head coach Rick Ray has been through a lot this season. The RedHawks opened 0-10 and then 0-6 in OVC play. He's had to kick a few guys off the team and experiment both offensively and defensively in order to give his kids a chance to compete. Something appears to have clicked as Ray has his squad back to playing man-to-man defense and it's resulted in three straight wins and 61, 60 (OT), and 51 points allowed. The competition of a D2 and two lower-tier OVC squads helped, but it's a lot better than their four previous games in which they allowed 87.3 ppg and were blown out each time. Austin Peay classifies as lower-tier OVC with a 2-6 conference record and the 11th-ranked offensive efficiency. The Governors do defend a little as they held the two best offenses in the OVC, Tennessee Tech and Belmont, to 72 and 76 respectively. That suggests APSU should be able to handle a SEMO offense that ranks 341 nationally in offensive efficiency. In the end, if SEMO plays close to the type of defense it has in its last three games vs. its season-long numbers, Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Pick: UCLA Bruins at Oregon State Beavers

UCLA at Oregon State -2.5 O/U 145
Recommendation: Under

UCLA's schedule through 18 games has been littered with teams that prefer to play with pace or can score at an efficient rate or a combination of both. On the season, the Bruins have faced the 8th toughest schedule in terms of opponent's offensive efficiency. I won't try to portray the Bruins as a good defensive team but tonight should serve as a step down in class as Oregon State's offense has struggled to score at times. And from a situational angle, you would expect both teams to bring effort on the defensive end with this being a very important game as they sit 2-3 in league play. UCLA's Bryce Alford on his team's defense of late: "We go a couple possessions in a row, or even a couple games in a row, where we play pretty decent defense," guard Bryce Alford said. "And then all of a sudden, I don't know what it is, but all of a sudden you have a lot of shutdowns, a lot of places where you break down. And you can't have that." UCLA isn't going to turn into a lock down unit overnight but again, the PAC-12 schedule hasn't been friendly with the Bruins yet to play Cal, Read more

Houston at Cincinnati -10 O/U 137.5
Recommendation: Under

After dropping its AAC opener to Temple, 77-70, Cincinnati head coach Mike Cronin made it abundantly clear that his team was going to start guarding or else heads were going to roll. In typical Cinci fashion, they responded, and done so in a big way. Over their last three games, the Bearcats have held the opposition to 57, 59, and 51. And one of those games was on the highway against an SMU squad that has hung 80+ on a routine basis this season. Tonight's opponent, Houston, is also getting more defensive of late having allowed 54 ppg in three AAC wins. And for both squads, the pace of their games has slowed considerably with only one of seven contests topping 65 possessions and tonight's posted total of 137.5. Also note that thus far, the AAC ranks near the bottom nationally in free throw rate as we've seen a number of league games have that 2014-15 "feel" to it with low scores and low possessions. And while we use last year's results with a grain of salt, it's worth noting that both meetings failed to top 122 points. Appears that both teams' non-conference results are still Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Seton Hall Pirates at Villanova Wildcats

Seton Hall at Villanova
Recommendation: Over 66 1st half

Villanova's offense looked like a well oiled machine in Big East wins over Xavier and Creighton. The Wildcats hit a combined 51-of-64 from two and 19-of-43 from three. They can score from all over the court and have an endless array of offensive weapons. Seton Hall has been serviceable on the offensive end with 83 and 78 point efforts in wins over Marquette and DePaul. Both games also featured a fair amount of pace with 80 and 72 possessions respectively. What I don't buy is any of Seton Hall's defensive numbers as multiple metrics indicate the schedule has been extremely favorable in terms of its opponent's offensive potency. In fact, six of their foes are currently averaging less than a point per possession. The Pirates allowed 1.09 ppp in Big East play last season which means we can put little stock into their current output of 0.94 (32nd nationally). Tonight serves as a massive step up in class considering Villanova ranks sixth in offensive efficiency despite struggling from beyond the arc to start the season. You do have to be concerned about Villanova's ability on the defensive end which Read more
