College Basketball Betting Free Play: North Dakota Hawks at Idaho State Bengals

North Dakota -4.5 at Idaho State O/U 153.5
Recommendation: Over

While doing research on today's college basketball card, I came across an article on Idaho State and its struggles against North Dakota which was referred to as a "nightmare matchup." The results certainly bear that out as UND has won the last four matchups by scores of 89-64, 84-76, 76-60, and 84-49. Now, the spot for Hawks tonight is not a good one. They've won six of seven, just wrapped up a three-game homestand, and have a showdown at first place Weber State on Saturday. Bad matchup but less than ideal spot has me more interested in the total. Idaho State sports one of the worst defenses in the Big Sky as it allows 57.2 eFG% and 1.14 points per possession. And when asked to face the three top offenses in the league, each team essentially scored at will. Eastern Washington hung 92 points on 74 possessions. Weber State scored 85 and 96 on two 73-possession games. And as previously mentioned, North Dakota needed only 71 possession to net 89 points. It's mid-February, you are 3-9 in league play, and guaranteed a berth to the conference tournament...a defensive renaissance Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Utah State Aggies at Colorado State Rams

Utah State at Colorado State -5.5 O/U 140.5
Recommendation: Under

I've played Utah State under the total a handful of times over the last few weeks and have been rewarded with a few easy winners. The Aggies have actually gone under in six straight games based on the closing number thanks to some improved defense and a moderate pace. During that stretch, USU allowed 67.7 ppg and four of the six had 65 possessions or less. One such game was the first meeting between Utah State and tonight's opponent Colorado State. The Rams prevailed 64-56 as the game went well under the total of 142. CSU is a game out of first place in the Mountain West after winning four of five. The Rams are one of the slower teams in the MWC, particiularly on offense as Larry Eustachy has really preached patience. "It's the way you should play basketball," Eustachy said. "You want the other team to guard you, break them down, take a good shot, and then you don't spend as much time on defense." The Mountain West can be a tough nut to crack for totals bettors. There are a lot of games that appear headed for the low-130's only to land north of 150. Fouls, defensive Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Austin Peay Governors at Eastern Kentucky Colonels

Austin Peay at Eastern Kentucky -6.5 O/U 154.5
Recommendation: Under

Eastern Kentucky has been forced to play at a much slower pace this season due to lack of depth and talent. In nine OVC games, the Colonels have topped 70 possessions only once. They rank dead last in the league at 0.92 points per possession. And their average game score in those nine league games is only 133. Despite that, tonight's total against Austin Peay has been bet up to as high as 155. The reason is because Austin Peay doesn't play much of any defense. The Governors currently rank 345 out of 351 in defensive efficiency. In non-conference play, Austin Peay went seven of eight games allowing 96 points or more. Things haven't been nearly as bad inside league play as they've surrendered a more modest 78.7 ppg in regulation. Their average game score in OVC play is 153.8; a lower mark than tonight's total despite the fact they face the league's worst offense that generally plays at a slower than average pace. EKU enters on a two-game winning streak; both games fueled by solid defense. And like a lot of middle of the road mid-major teams, they tend to play better defense on their Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: UW-Green Bay Phoenix at Detroit Titans

UW-Green Bay -5 at Detroit O/U 165
Recommendation: Over

Detroit has played high-scoring up-tempo basketball for much of the season but of late, the Titans have taken it to the extreme thanks to more emphasis on pressing full court. Three of their last five games have topped the 80-possession mark. They've posted game totals of 181, 158, 194, and 188. The lone "hiccup" was last time out against UW-Milwaukee who plays at an ultra-slow pace (343rd tempo). The Panthers won 73-69 in overtime. I expect to see a return to the norm this afternoon with UW-Green Bay coming to town. The Phoenix aren't as offensively gifted as they were last season but they continue to play ultra-fast; currently first in the Horizon at over 76 possessions per game. These two teams have yet to meet this season but UWG's two games against Youngstown can perhaps serve as a barometer of what to expect. The Penguins are very similar to the Titans; all pace and offense and zero defense. Green Bay beat Youngstown on the road 90-77 and then lost at home 92-89. Both games topped 80 possessions. This is no doubt a rich number but it is warranted. It wouldn't surprise me at all Read more
