College Basketball Free Play: Villanova Wildcats at Louisville Cardinals

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Villanova +9.5 at Louisville O/U 141.5
Recommendation: Villanova

Since losing at home to South Florida on January 5th, Villanova seems to have made some major improvements. The young team is picking up on what it takes to play in the Big East, and their talent is emerging. As a result, they are 3-2 SU and 4-1 ATS since that loss, and faced three of the top teams in the league during that stretch. Maalik Wayns has become a star at the point and freshman Jayvaughn Pinkston is rapidly improving on the block. They are a team that could be a money maker down the stretch, and judging by tonight’s line, no one has caught on to their improvements. Louisville is off a win at Pitt in which Kyle Kuric returned to lead them on the offense, but this is still a flawed team. They are 15-5 on the season, but just 3-5 in their last eight games since the schedule got tougher. Underdog has some value here.

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The SEC race is shaping up as a two-team sprint after the first three weeks of conference play. Kentucky and Vanderbilt are the front runners with everyone else falling back into the pack. The Wildcats and Commodores could not be any more different, with Kentucky made up of all freshmen and sophomores while Vandy gets its production from upperclassmen.  Vanderbilt also does not get the respect from bettors and oddsmakers that Kentucky does, although that may change after the Commodores dominated Alabama in Tuscaloosa last night. I doubt that we will see Vandy getting five points on the road anymore unless it is at Kentucky.  On the other hand, Kentucky continues to struggle as road chalk in conference play, winning but failing to cover at Auburn and Tennessee.

I expect more of the same from Kentucky this season. Last year, they had a different group of freshmen, but they displayed the same characteristics on the road in SEC play. Everyone in the league gets up to play Kentucky, so they always get their opponents’ best effort. Freshmen are still freshmen, whether they are future first round picks or not, and I’ll be looking for chances to play against Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Rhode Island Rams at Fordham Rams

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Rhode Island at Fordham -3.5 O/U 135
Recommendation: Fordham

Rhode Island has been a complete disaster this year as it limps into this road contest with a 3-15 record. Head coach Jim Baron is taking heat and grasping at straws to turn this season around, but none of his lineup changes have worked. The Rams’ wins thus far came against Boston College, James Madison and Hofstra. They kicked their best player, Jamal Wilson, off the team in December and added transfers Andre Malone and Baron’s son Billy who have had little to no impact. RI’s defense has been atrocious allowing 48.9 % from the field and 49.9% on the road. Fordham has made some improvements under head coach Tom Pecora, including home wins against Georgia Tech and Harvard. The Rams are coming off an 80-62 loss at St. Joe's and should be ready for a nice effort at home against an opponent that they should be able to beat. Take the home side.

College Basketball Free Play: Missouri State Bears at Northern Iowa Panthers

Missouri State +6 at Northern Iowa O/U 128
Recommendation: Missouri State

Northern Iowa has been really struggling of late, dropping four of its past six games. Two of the losses (Ohio and Evansville) came at the McLeod Center which has been one of the better home venues in the country over the past few seasons.  The Panthers did bounce back with two wins before losing a close game at Creighton last time out. Missouri State on the other hand has been playing solid basketball. They have won four of their last five, including road wins at Creighton and Indiana State. Missouri State has not missed a beat without head coach Cuonzo Martin, as new leader Paul Lusk has implemented his system smoothly while emphasizing the same defense first approach as Martin. This should be a typical Missouri Valley Conference game with both teams with a shot in the final minutes. As such, six points in too high as we fire away with the underdog.

College Basketball Free Pick: Notre Dame Fighting Irish vs. Georgia Bulldogs

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Notre Dame -3.5 vs. Georgia O/U 130
Recommendation: Notre Dame

It has been a rough start for the Georgia offense with just 60.8 ppg through its first four games. The young Bulldogs have hit only 38% from the field and 23% from the three-point line. They have not faced a very tough schedule of defenses either, as they beat Wofford, Bowling Green and South Dakota State before losing to California last night. The offensive woes for Georgia are self-inflicted. They just don’t have many weapons to use in their half-court offense. Freshman Ken Caldwell-Pope and senior Gerald Robinson lead the team in scoring at 12.5 ppg, but both are hitting 40% or less from the floor. None of the young bigs are capable of doing anything at this point other than hitting open layups and dunks. Georgia won’t be facing a lock down defense tonight against Notre Dame, but the Irish are capable of keeping the Bulldogs in check once again. Notre Dame has enough size inside to Read more

College Basketball Betting News: Rutgers goes freshmen heavy, no seniors

Dartmouth at Rutgers

Article on the youth movement for Rutgers this season. The Scarlet Knights are expected to start a trio of freshmen guards. Head coach Mike Rice brought in a talented recruiting class but noted that it is hard to fully prepare a team that feature seven freshmen and no seniors. The Scarlet Knights play host to Dartmouth tomorrow. The Big Green return four starters but finished 5-23 last season.

“At some points in time I’m excited and think we’re ready for the Big East and sometimes I think we’d have trouble winning in a New Jersey Division III league,” Rice said. “It’s a lack of consistency I think you’ll find with a young team, but there are some things to work with.”

NCAA Tournament Betting Recap: First Three Rounds

03.22.2011     07:37 AM     Alatex Sports     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Alatex Sports

We are down to the Sweet Sixteen in what has been a very entertaining tournament so far. We have three No. 1 seeds left; Ohio State, Kansas and Duke, as well as three No. 2 seeds; North Carolina, San Diego State and Florida. There are four double-digit seeds among the remaining 16 as well; 10th seeded Florida State, 12th seeded Richmond and two No. 11 seeds, VCU and Marquette. Rounding out the regionals are fourth seeds Kentucky and Wisconsin, fifth seed Arizona and eighth seed Butler.

Thus far, Ohio State has looked like they deserved the No. 1 overall seed, showing no weaknesses in dispatching UTSA and George Mason – although Mason played without one of its best players, Luke Hancock, who was sick in his hotel room. Not that it would have mattered much, as the Buckeyes were way too much for the underdogs with an outstanding performance on Sunday. The Buckeyes are the clear favorite to win the title, with Kansas and Duke a notch below. I am not sure there are any other teams that have much of a shot unless something Read more

SEC Conference Tournament Betting Preview

Submitted by Alatex Sports

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The 2011 SEC Tournament kicks off Thursday in the Georgia Dome with four first round games. Kentucky will be trying to defend its 2010 title, but there have been four different winners in the past four years. The Wildcats have won 26 SEC tournament titles, which is 20 more than Alabama, who has the next most at six. Interestingly, Georgia Tech has as many SEC Tournament Championships (one) as Vanderbilt, LSU, Ole Miss, Auburn, and Arkansas.
Teams that are playing on Thursday must win four games in four days to win the tournament. When the league expanded, there was no running of the gauntlet from 1992 to 1999. But in 2000, Arkansas became the first team to do it. It has happened twice since then, with Georgia in 2008 and Mississippi State in 2009 accomplishing the feat.

This year’s first round matchups include a lot of big favorites: Georgia -11.5 vs. Auburn, Ole Miss -4 vs. South Carolina, Tennessee -6 vs. Arkansas, and Vanderbilt -13.5 vs. LSU. Ordinarily the Thursday games don’t see these type of Read more
