NCAA Tournament Betting Preview: Initial thoughts on the Midwest Region

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The NCAA Tournament field is set and like most bettors, Sunday night is spent skimming through the first round matchups and forming initial thoughts and opinions. Keep in mind that a lot can change leading up to the start of the tournament – most notably where oddsmakers set the lines and where the betting markets drives said lines. For Monday's blog, I'll share my initial thoughts and opinions with our readers on all four regions.

Midwest
The Midwest features three of the four play-in winners with Cal Poly/Texas Southern taking on no. 1 seed Wichita State, Xavier-NC State vs. Saint Louis, and Iowa-Tennessee vs. UMass... I think it helps Kansas State that it got bounced in the first round of the Big XII Tournament whereas Kentucky played three games in three days and expended a ton of energy in the 61-60 SEC title game loss vs. Florida... No clue on who will emerge out of the three-team pod of SLU/NC State/Xavier. The Billikens seem a bit overrated and have trouble scoring at times, NC State is ultra-young, and Xavier is as flighty as they come... Of course the selection committee was going to pit a former Louisville assistant up against the Read more

West
As much as I love the Big Sky I can't even recall the last time they were competitive in the Big Dance. Weber State hasn't faced a defense even remotely close to that of Arizona. The closest was UCLA who trucked Weber, 83-60, in Los Angeles... I just got done looking at Gonzaga's resume and man, they didn't beat anyone. They lost to tournament teams Dayton, Kansas State, and Memphis and went 2-1 vs. a so-so BYU squad. That said, Mark Few vs. Travis Ford is a mismatch. I seem to remember Dana Altman and Oregon running OSU off the court in last year's tourney... Tough matchup for Oklahoma's young squad having to take on very experienced and talented North Dakota State. The Sooners losing in the first round of the Read more

East
Gotta be able to score at an efficient rate to compete with Virginia and first round opponent Coastal Carolina is one of the few teams in the tournament to average less than a point per possession (0.97). Pretty good blueprint of what to expect with Coastal losing to Clemson, 69-40... If you bet the Memphis-George Washington game, expect more than few missed free throws with both teams at 65% on the season... Harvard isn't your typical Ivy League team in that the Crimson has some decent athletes. They were only -2 in rebounding vs. UConn but shot 11-of-34, 32% from 2-point in the 61-56 loss... Delaware competed well against Villanova (84-80 loss), Notre Dame (80-75 loss) and Ohio State (76-64 loss). The Blue Read more

No surprise to see Florida earn the no. 1 seed and get to play just down the road in Orlando... Always funny to see the difference power ratings bettors use vs. the criteria of the selection committee with Colorado, a no. 8 seed and ranked 55th (Sagarin) and 64th (Ken Pom) vs. Pitt, a no. 9 seed (20th (Sagarin) and 18th (Ken Pom)... Obviously going to look at turnovers with games involving VCU. The Rams' first round foe, Stephen F. Austin, not only has a respectable turnover rate (16.8) but the Lumberjacks actually forced turnovers at a higher rate (24.1) in conference play than VCU (23.1) – albeit against the rather weak competition of the Southland... Pointless to look at Tulsa’s entire body of Read more

Kentucky vs. Florida -6.5 O/U 130
Recommendation: Florida

Florida has never beaten Kentucky three times in the same season but they’ll have chance to do so at this afternoon’s SEC Championship. It would be yet another record-breaking accomplishment for this senior-laden squad that has its eyes on the prize after coming up short of the Final Four with defeats in three straight Elite Eight appearances. UF has been sloppy in the first half of both of its SEC Tournament games against Missouri and Tennessee. But once they clamped down on defense in the second half they cashed tickets for their backers. In fact, Florida has taken the cash in five consecutive games, but it wasn't easy against Tennessee. UF didn't get ahead of the number for the first time until Patric Young buried a pair of free throws with 2.5 seconds remaining. Gamblers on the Volunteers suffered a bad beat catching six points with the underdogs in a 56-49 loss. But I again go back to UF’s incredible defense. After giving up 35 points in the first half, it limited Tennessee to merely 14 points in the last 20 minutes. Florida has won 25 consecutive games and hasn't tasted Read more

UConn vs. Louisville -8 O/U 135.5
Recommendation: Over

Louisville has been an offensive juggernaut over the back half of the season, netting 80+ points in nine of their last 12 games. That acumen has been on full display during the AAC Tournament with 92- and 94-point efforts in the opening two rounds. And while the Cardinals still play stellar defense, their offense and pace of games puts tonight's total of 135 well within reach. UConn meanwhile has not played many high scoring games of late, using defense to wear teams down. They held both Memphis and Cincinnati to under 57 points in their first two tournament games. I think tonight's game won't be such a grinder – the margin vs. Memphis was too big to create flow and Cincinnati plays super-slow. Louisville is pushing the tempo at an incredible rate with 70+ possessions in five of their last six. The only one that fell below that was their 81-48 home win over UConn that gave the Cards a share of the AAC regular season title. So while both teams play outstanding defense I think there is an equal amount of offensive talent and as mentioned, the pace of this game should be fairly quick. And with Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Northwestern Wildcats vs. Michigan State Spartans

Northwestern vs. Michigan State
Recommendation: 1st half under

Northwestern shocked the Big Ten world last night with its upset of Iowa, 67-62.  Unfortunately the task only gets tougher tonight with Michigan State rested and ready off of a first round bye.  The undermanned Wildcats will do their best to play a modern day version of “four corners” – head coach Chris Collins well aware that shortening the game gives his squad the best chance to compete.  Last night’s Iowa game was epically slow during the first half with a pace under 50.  Both teams however got to 61 at half thanks to a couple of last second three-pointers. And the Wildcats also made shots at an abnormally high rate hitting 23-of-44. Despite all of that, the game still went under the total and would have landed well below 120 if not for fouls and free throws the last minute.  With the possibility of tonight’s getting out of hand in the second half and Northwestern having to play catch-up, the best bet will be on the first half UNDER the total.

College Basketball Gambling: Illinois hopes to figure out Michigan after blowout loss

Illinois vs. Michigan -7.5 O/U 127

Illinois talks about trying to forget last week's 84-53 loss to Michigan. The Illini got past Indiana 65-60 in the first round and take on the top seed Wolverines this afternoon.

“We forgot about that game,’’ said Illinois junior Nnanna Egwu, who had seven rebounds and five blocks in the 64-54 win for the Illini against the Indiana Hoosiers. “We watched some film and after that, it was done with.’’

“We have to take away the mistakes that we made,’’ Illinois senior forward Jon Ekey said. “We really beat ourselves a lot in that first game. Obviously, they are really good and they take advantage of your mistakes.

“It was a good learning experience for all of us. Everyone took responsibility for that game. Once we left the film room, it was out of our system.’’

College Basketball Gambling Trends: ACC Tournament has not been kind to North Carolina backers

03.14.2014     06:12 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
A lot of rumblings on Twitter about how North Carolina's Roy Williams doesn't care one iota about conference tournaments. So we went back and checked the results since his arrival in Chapel Hill. From a straight up perspective, the Tar Heels have been pretty good at 15-8. They've reach the finals five of the last seven years and only twice under Williams have they gone one-and-done. Where Williams falls short however is covering numbers. Amazingly UNC has lost money for their backers in all but one ACC Tournament in the last 10 years! Combined they are 4-17-2 against the spread. The spread may not be much of a factor for this afternoon's game against Pittsburgh with the Tar Heels current laying -1.

North Carolina ACC Tournament under Roy Williams
2004: 0-1 (0-1 ATS)
2005: 1-1 (0-2 ATS)
2006: 1-1 (0-1-1 ATS)
2007: 3-0 (2-1 ATS)
2008; 3-0 (0-3 ATS)
2009: 1-1 (0-2 ATS)
2010: 0-1 (0-1 ATS)
2011: 2-1 (0-2-1 ATS)
2012: 2-1 (1-2 ATS)
2013: 2-1 (1-2 ATS)
Results: 15-8 SU, 4-17-2 ATS
