College Basketball Handicapping: What to do with UCLA moving forward

01.05.2015     02:09 PM     Andrew Lange     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
So if you haven't already noticed, UCLA is really bad. Or at least that's how they've been playing the last three weeks. They can't win, can't cover, and have been an under bettor's dream because they can't score despite playing at a fast clip. Look, as of now, unless I come across a great piece of information, playing a conference game over the total just isn't in the cards. However, knowing the natural ebb and flow of a season, I can tell you that the Bruins are at some point going to cash in on some overs.

For starters, four of their last five games were on the road and all but one opponent (Alabama) was what I would consider to be defensively elite. Some of the blame can no question be placed on the offense which has little to no room for growth if Bryce Alford remains the team's top scoring option. Adding to it is that they don't have a true point guard nor any pop off the bench. Pretty bleak, right? But when you step back and look at the bigger picture I see potential -- and by potential I mean "overs."

Of UCLA's seven losses, all but one was on the road and the lone home game, sure enough, went flying over the total with 160 points. And the one Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: West Virginia Mountaineers at TCU Horned Frogs

West Virginia -2.5 at TCU O/U 131
Recommendation: Under

West Virginia has had a pretty easy go of it thus far playing home/neutral games against mostly lesser competition. And you can't go anywhere without hearing about the ridiculous amount of turnovers the Mountaineers are forcing (32.5%). Those turnovers have managed to offset what is once again a below average shooting team. My question is what happens to WVU's vaunted offense if the opposition can hold on to the basketball and not get baited into an up-and-down, chaotic affair? TCU may be that team as the Horned Frogs prefer to play a methodical, half court game under the leadership of veteran point guard Kyan Anderson. Admittedly, TCU has played practically no one so we can't get too excited about the 13-0 start. But what I look at is the scores of games vs. Mississippi State and Ole Miss. Both failed to top 120 points and 125 possessions. That is the type of game TCU wants to play and for the first time in Trent Johnson's tenure, they actually have the players to execute it on a consistent basis as oppose to last season when many of their games got out of hand because of the large margins. College Basketball Handicapping: Big Ten Strength of Schedule

12.31.2014     06:47 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Cool article on the Big Ten's schedule format this season due to the inclusion of Rutgers and Maryland. Most coaches are taking an "it is what it is" approach to it. There is however unbalance when you look at it from a strength of schedule standpoint. Northwestern for example plays one of the toughest slates with two games against Wisconsin, Michigan State, Michigan, Iowa, and Illinois. Ohio State meanwhile has seemingly the easiest schedule with two games against Michigan, Iowa, Indiana, Purdue, and Penn State. The Buckeyes also get Wisconsin at home and Northwestern and Rutgers on the road.

"One or two games on who you play or don't play can make a two or three-game difference in the standings,'' Michigan State coach Tom Izzo says. "I don't think we want to educate our fans on that.

"We still want to try to win championships, but that's what's a little harder for the coaches, I think, is the concept that there's a reality to it that if you

UNC Wilmington +7.5 at Ohio
Recommendation: UNC Wilmington

It has been a rough start for the Ohio Bobcats under first year coach Saul Phillips, who came over from North Dakota State. Phillips won 50 games over the past two years at NDSU but the Bobcats have struggled to a 4-6 mark this year after winning 78 games over the past three seasons. Ohio lost four seniors and four recruits decided to go elsewhere after Jim Christian left for Boston College. Phillips found two freshmen late and both are starting along with three senior holdovers.

Ohio finds itself in a tough spot here with it being their first game since returning from Hawaii, where they went 1-2 in a three day tournament. Teams in this spot usually have trouble focusing, especially with Christmas thrown in as well, as most were likely visiting family since their return to the mainland. They also have a week off after tonight’s game when they open conference play next Wednesday. A less than marquee opponent tonight doesn’t exactly set up as a maximum effort type game.

UNC-Wilmington has also struggled to a 5-5 record this season, with four losses to potential Read more

College Basketball Gambling: Bettors jump on Kentucky's potentially perfect season

12.30.2014     07:56 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We knew this one was coming. Various Las Vegas sportsbooks have been offering a prop bet on whether or not Kentucky will run the table. William Hill chucked up a 50-1 during the summer -- which was in our opinion sorta insulting given the “true” odds of the feat. Fast forward five months and that's looking like the one awesome wager! The current adjusted price is +450. We ask the question, doesn't Calipari WANT to lose a game? Isn't that the type of thing that can be used to benefit the bigger picture? In theory, yes, but there’s also that whole ego thing to contend with.

"It's pretty good six figures, too," William Hill director of trading Nick Bogdanovich said of the liability on the popular prop bet. "They keep betting it."

Tennessee State at Tennessee -21.5 O/U 127
Recommendation: Under

Despite the coaching change from Cuonzo Martin to Donnie Tyndall, the Vols really haven't changed much with a vast majority of their games of the slow paced, low scoring variety. With the exception of their contest at NC State that went wild the last 10 minutes (58 points), UT's recent game scores have been 126, 129, 122, 119, and 118. Tennessee should have no trouble keeping Tennessee State under wraps offensively. The Tigers are in complete rebuilding mode and feature a roster with little to do DI experience. Against DI foes, they've notched north of 60 points only twice. And when asked to step up in class they scored a combined 82 points vs. Vanderbilt and Virginia with both games going under today's posted total. The concern here is if the home side goes wild and the second half turns into a pick-up game. The Vols however have yet to show the ability to score at will with their biggest win of the season coming by 12 points. On Monday we saw them grind out a 64-54 win vs. Mercer. I look for a similar output this evening.

College Basketball Betting: Arizona State makes lineup changes

12.23.2014     06:39 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Following back-to-back losses including a triple OT affair at home against Lehigh, Arizona State's Herb Sendek says lineup changes are coming. The Sun Devils play host to Detroit this afternoon.

"We're going with a lineup that we believe gives us a high-energy quotient and has the potential to be a good defensive unit," said Sendek, adding that his overall rotation could tighten as well. (He played 11 in the first seven minutes of the Lehigh loss.)

"We have too many breakdowns," Sendek said. "Sometimes the players themselves think they're coming out because they made a turnover, but (often) it's for defensive assignments. We just got to do a much better job."

Ohio State vs. North Carolina (Chicago)
Tar Heels have plenty of issues but the huge advantage in this one is that they've played five quality top 25 caliber teams. Ohio State meanwhile caught Marquette early and battled back but was for the most part manhandled by Louisville. They've been stationed in Columbus playing nothing but glorified practices. Good for confidence, bad for asking them to flip the switch away from home against comparable competition.

Northern Iowa vs. Iowa (Des Moines)
Prior to allowing 90 to rival Iowa State, I've been impressed with Iowa's defense. The offense though has struggled vs. quality foes and Northern Iowa guards about as good as anyone in the country outside of top-tier bullies like Kentucky and Louisville. Would expect Iowa's best effort with over a week to prep after aforementioned blowout loss to Cyclones. Expect to see Hawkeyes in the -2/-2.5 range.

Oklahoma vs. Washington (Las Vegas)
Huskies are undefeated and while the schedule comes up light, this looks to be one of Romar's most complete teams. He's had more talent but they've bought in to guarding which Read more

Eastern Washington +6.5 at California O/U 141
Recommendation: Eastern Washington

My clients and I recently cashed a winning ticket supporting the Eastern Washington Eagles in their spread covering 81-77 loss at undefeated Washington. The Eagles led by double digits at one point but the Huskies kept chipping away at the lead and eventually got the win. EWU suffered a somewhat inevitable hangover in their next game losing 76-52 at Sam Houston State but I think the Eagles are talented enough to bounce back with a much better effort. This is a squad that has four starters back and a very experienced backcourt featuring Tyler Harvey, Drew Brandon, and Parker Kelly. They have some size inside as well with forward Venky Jois averaging 19.6 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. Cuonzo Martin’s Cal squad has played stellar defense to this point but you could make a solid argument they haven’t played many capable offenses. Guard Jabari Bird Is likely to miss his fourth straight game with a foot injury. The Golden Bears have stalled in the three games without Bird on the floor, failing to top 67 points against Nevada, Wyoming and Princeton. The Eagles Read more
