College Basketball Gambling Trends: ACC Tournament has not been kind to North Carolina backers

03.14.2014     06:12 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
A lot of rumblings on Twitter about how North Carolina's Roy Williams doesn't care one iota about conference tournaments. So we went back and checked the results since his arrival in Chapel Hill. From a straight up perspective, the Tar Heels have been pretty good at 15-8. They've reach the finals five of the last seven years and only twice under Williams have they gone one-and-done. Where Williams falls short however is covering numbers. Amazingly UNC has lost money for their backers in all but one ACC Tournament in the last 10 years! Combined they are 4-17-2 against the spread. The spread may not be much of a factor for this afternoon's game against Pittsburgh with the Tar Heels current laying -1.

North Carolina ACC Tournament under Roy Williams
2004: 0-1 (0-1 ATS)
2005: 1-1 (0-2 ATS)
2006: 1-1 (0-1-1 ATS)
2007: 3-0 (2-1 ATS)
2008; 3-0 (0-3 ATS)
2009: 1-1 (0-2 ATS)
2010: 0-1 (0-1 ATS)
2011: 2-1 (0-2-1 ATS)
2012: 2-1 (1-2 ATS)
2013: 2-1 (1-2 ATS)
Results: 15-8 SU, 4-17-2 ATS

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Miami Hurricanes vs. NC State Wolfpack

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Miami (FL) vs. NC State +2 O/U 126.5
Recommendation: NC State

Very quietly NC State played some solid basketball late in the season going 5-4 SU, 7-2 ATS – making money for their supporters with narrow one-point losses to both North Carolina and Syracuse. NC State is led by ACC Player of the Year T.J. Warren who has been carrying this team most of the season averaging over 24 ppg and grabbing 7 rebounds per game. He poured in back-to-back 40+ point performances against Pittsburgh and Boston College – both NC State victories. Miami has a very tough defense allowing 60.4 ppg in their last five contests but the defense might be a little bit worn down tonight after a tight, down to the wire game against Virginia Tech last night. Four of their five starters played 33+ minutes which could leave them a bit fatigued. Miami forward Donnavan Kirk, who averages 7.5 ppg and five rpg, did not play in the win against Virginia Tech after suffering a leg injury in practice Tuesday and is no sure thing to suit up tonight. That could be big loss for Miami today playing the second of back-to-back games for a team that isn’t very deep. These two teams Read more

College Basketball Handicapping: UNLV at full strength vs. Wyoming

Wyoming at UNLV -8.5

It looks like UNLV will be at full strength – or close to it – for this afternoon's Mountain West Tournament first round matchup vs. Wyoming. Roscoe Smith (11.0 ppg, concussion) may not start but is expected to play. Same deal with Bryce Dejean-Jones (13.4 ppg, suspension). Khem Bitch (11.8 ppg) hurt his hip against San Diego State and has been limited in practice but will play.

College Basketball Gambling: Tennessee needs win to secure NCAA berth

03.13.2014     06:56 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Tennessee hopes to buck its trend of poor play in the SEC Tournament. Under Cuonzo Martin the Vols are 1-2 SU/ATS the last two seasons – in both instances the team was on the NCAA Tournament bubble but ended up in the NIT. It's a similar situation this year with UT currently one of the "last four in" according to ESPN's Joe Lunardi. The Vols earned a bye into the quarterfinals and will play the winner of South Carolina-Arkansas on Friday.

"We have to understand that our history is against us, because as Vols we normally don't do good in the SEC tournament," All-SEC post player Jarnell Stokes said before hopping on the bus. "I grew up as a Vol fan. I know that, so I definitely want to be the person to break history. That's what I came here for."

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Air Force Falcons vs. Fresno State Bulldogs

Air Force vs. Fresno State -6.5 O/U 136
Recommendation: Under

College basketball totals are set based on aggregate statistics, factoring in a team’s entire schedule.  But these totals don’t factor in head-to-head meetings with as much influence as they should.  That’s clearly the case for tonight’s Mountain West Conference battle between Air Force and Fresno State.

There have been four previous matchups between Fresno head coach Rodney Terry and Air Force head coach Dave Pilipovich.  Those four games have finished with an average of 116 combined points, all four staying well Under the total by a combined 67 points.  And even those aggregate numbers are somewhat misleading, because these two teams combined for 18 ‘scramble points’ in the final minute and a half of Fresno’s six point home win over the Falcons back in January; a game that played at a much slower pace than the final score would indicate.

Both teams play a fair bit of zone defense, and neither squad gets easy shots from the low post on any sort of consistent basis – this game has ‘jump shot after Read more

College Basketball Gambling: Oregon more confident in post defense

03.12.2014     07:24 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Oregon State vs. Oregon -7 O/U 148.5

One of Oregon's biggest weaknesses this season was interior defense. They ranked near the bottom of the PAC-12 in two-point field goal defense and offensive rebounds. But with the emergence of post players Waverly Austin and Ben Carter, the Ducks feel their days of getting beat up in the paint are over. That could very well be the x-factor of tonight’s game against Oregon State as the Beavers feature a very long and physical front court.

"He didn’t play much against us when we played them the last couple of times," OSU coach Craig Robinson said of Austin, who held his ground against Arizona State's Jordan Bachynski and Arizona's Kaleb Tarczewski last week in the Oregon sweep.

"They’re not as vulnerable in the paint so that’s going to be something new for our staff to deal with," Robinson said. "I’m sure they’re happy that he’s producing more."

College Basketball Handicapping: Vanderbilt's Stallings asks for looser offensive play

03.12.2014     06:46 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Mississippi State vs. Vanderbilt -7

Vanderbilt head coach Kevin Stallings is encouraging his squad to shoot more after averaging only 51.3 ppg its last four games. The Commodores had the 12th worst offensive efficiency (0.97 points per possession) in the SEC this season. Tonight's SEC Tournament opener provides a good opportunity to right the ship as Mississippi State sports the SEC's worst defensive efficiency (1.09 ppp allowed).

“After a while, when you try to get guys to be more involved in the offense and you tell them to be more involved in the offense and they still don’t do it, then there is a reluctance and you’re not sure why it exists.”

“Rod is a little worn down and that’s affecting his shooting,” Stallings said. “We’re not so deep with outside shooting that if he’s missing, then we struggle to find enough

College Basketball Betting: Seton Hall to alter defensive game plan vs. Butler

03.12.2014     06:36 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Butler vs. Seton Hall -2 O/U 127.5

Expect Seton Hall to make some defensive adjustments for tonight's Big East Tournament opener against Butler. The two teams met last Saturday with the Bulldogs cruising to a 71-54 win. The Pirates' zone wasn't very effective as Butler shot 11-of-18, 55% from three. Seton Hall head coach Kevin Willard hinted that his squad will likely play more man-to-man.

"Obviously we have to do a much better job on Dunham," Willard said. "If you let a player like Dunham get going you’re going to be in for a long night.

"It definitely helps," Willard said of the quick turnaround. "You go back, you see what worked and you see what didn’t work. The players already know [Butler’s] personnel."

College Basketball Handicapping: Michigan State claims there will be effort towards Big Ten Tournament

03.12.2014     06:25 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Notorious for not putting forth much effort in the Big Ten Tournament, Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo says this year will be different. Since the event started in 2008, the Spartans are a rather modest 19-13 straight up. And since winning back-to-back titles in 1999 and 2000, the Spartans have made only one finals appearance (2012 champs). They play the winner of Iowa-Northwestern on Friday.

“The tournament is gonna be big for us. Most years it’s not,” Izzo said. “I think it’s big that we get to play some games. This team needs to keep practicing and playing together. … We’re not trying to reinvent the wheel, we’re just trying to bring back some of the magic we had early in the year when we had everybody playing together.”
