NCAA Tournament Handicapping: UNLV short favorites in rematch vs. California

03.18.2013     07:44 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
California vs. UNLV -3

The Mountain West Conference is well represented in this year's NCAA Tournament with five teams making the field. Of those five teams, four are currently favored in their first round matchups including UNLV (-3) vs. California (at San Jose). The Rebels won in Berkeley earlier this season, 76-75, and 1.5-point underdogs.

“Any time when you have a game like that where it was very close, I think the advantage goes to the loser of the first matchup,” said LVH Superbook Executive Director Jay Kornegay. “I think Cal will be a little more motivated to beat UNLV than the other way around. UNLV is going to have to overcome that.”

College Basketball Betting News and Notes: Conference Tournament Title Games

New and notes for today’s conference tournament title games.

North Carolina's recent surge (8-2 SU/ATS) was in part due to a switch to a smaller lineup – right after losing to Miami 87-61 back on Feb. 9. Both of UNC's ACC Tournament games went OVER the total after it closed the regular season with six straight UNDERS.

“The smaller lineup has helped us,’’ Williams said Saturday after his team beat Maryland in the semifinals. “We’re a better basketball team. Is it a world-beater, is it the newest thing that ever happened, the best thing that ever happened? No. ... But [going small] was the best thing for this team.

Ole Miss head coach Andy Kennedy feels confident that by reaching today's SEC finals that his squad has earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament. The latest Bracketology projection has the Rebels among the "last four Read more

NCAA Basketball Betting Recap: Syracuse disintegrates, Kansas and New Mexico cut down nets

If you ever wondered by handicappers should pay attention to fatigue, the last 15 minutes of tonight’s Syracuse/Louisville game should have made it crystal clear. Syracuse hit a wall…a bit more than midway through their fourth game in four days. A 16-point lead evaporated in a finger snap. Another finger snap, and Louisville was up by that much!

Syracuse 45-29 in the first 25 minutes

Louisville 49-16 in the last 15 minutes

The treys stopped falling for Syracuse (the laws of math only let you tempt fate for so long), the legs stopped moving in their zone defense…which allowed Louisville to either pass for easy buckets or rebound misses for easy buckets. One team hit a wall just as the other finally found the right gear. Amazing to behold.

Louisville 78, Syracuse 61

2-Point Percentage: Syracuse 41%, Louisville 45%

3-Point Shooting: Syracuse 9/22, Louisville 6/19

Free Throws: Syracuse 12/26, Read more

Atlantic-10 Tournament Betting Free Play: UMass Minutemen vs. VCU Rams

Massachusetts +8.5 vs. VCU O/U 151.5
Recommendation: UMass

I'm of the belief that teams facing VCU for a second time are going to perform better. The element of surprise with the "Havoc" isn't as strong and an entire game of film can be dissected. When UMass traveled to VCU earlier this season the inevitable occurred – the Minutemen turned the ball over 24 times and lost by 18. Make no mistake, UMass is going to cough it up more than a few times tonight, but I'm confident that the change in venue and situation (UMass playing for its NCAA Tournament life) is going to make this more of a competitive matchup. And another thing to consider is VCU isn't the same team away from home. The Rams played nine games against A-10 opponents on the road/neutral and had exactly one win by more than seven points – against the worst team in the league, Duquesne.

SEC Tournament Betting Free Play: Missouri Tigers vs. Ole Miss Rebels

Missouri vs. Mississippi +5 O/U 153.5
Recommendation: Mississippi

When people think Ole Miss they think an underachieving squad that recently did the unthinkable and lost to woeful Mississippi State. But this is a squad that still won 23 games and went a respectable 12-6 in SEC play. Are there flaws? Absolutely. But I like the fact that rather than pack it in the Rebels beat Alabama and went on the road and roughed up LSU following the embarrassing lost to rival MSU. Missouri played a tougher SEC slate than Ole Miss but at 11-7 in league play, the Tigers also have flaws – most notably performing well away from home against quality competition. I'm whipping the slate clean with the underdog and giving them a shot to stick around and potentially pull off the upset.

College Basketball Handicapping: Conflicting reports on Colorado State point guard Green

Colorado State at UNLV -4.5 O/U 135

Colorado State point guard Dorian Green (13.1 ppg, 3.9 apg) says he might be able to play after missing Wednesday's game against Fresno State with an ankle injury. But following the win head coach Larry Eustachy said there was a "99.9% chance" Green won't play. The Rams are all but in the NCAA Tournament (Lunardi has them as a No. 8 seed) which suggests Green is likely to remain on the shelf.

“It’s getting better, which is the good thing,” Green said. “I think I’ve got a chance to play (Friday). We’ll see what happens.”

The early Thursday schedule was notable for the number of Dance-bound teams finally seeing action. If what happened on the floor today is any indication, not much should be expected from the likes of Minnesota, Oklahoma, and Cincinnati next week. Heck, Illinois WON but looked about as bad as you can while winning a game.

Let’s run the numbers…

Illinois 51, Minnesota 49

2-Point Percentage: Minnesota 43%, Illinois 39%

3-Point Shooting: Minnesota 6/17, Illinois 6/25

Free Throws: Minnesota 11/14, Illinois 9/10

1’s and 2’s: Minnesota 31, Illinois 33

Rebounds: Minnesota 36, Illinois 24

Turnovers: Minnesota 17, Illinois 5

(Minnesota 24 in Kenpom, 30 in Sagarin, 30 in BPI, Illinois 42-44-62)

Very ugly game. Minnesota continued it’s “Hey computers, will you just accept that we suck instead of talking about Read more

SEC Tournament Betting Free Play: Arkansas Razorbacks vs. Vanderbilt Commodores

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Arkansas -3 vs. Vanderbilt O/U 125
Recommendation: Arkansas

Vanderbilt enjoyed a very easy slate down the stretch, winning four of their last five games in large part because they played three of the weakest teams in the conference—South Carolina, Auburn and Mississippi State.  They escaped with a one point win (as 5.5-point favorites, a non-cover) over offensively challenged Georgia and got absolutely annihilated at Florida in their other two games during that span.

Kevin Stalling’s squad is as young as it gets.  They don’t have a senior on the roster after graduating all five senior starters from last year’s team.  And they have only two juniors; Kyle Fuller and Rod Odom.  That’s why the Commodores have struggled so much away from home this year; not a team to trust in a neutral court environment, even one in their home city.  Let’s not forget how Arkansas held Vandy to a grand total Read more

Big Ten Tournament Betting Free Play: Nebraska Cornhuskers vs. Purdue Boilermakers

Nebraska +6 vs. Purdue O/U 120
Recommendation: Nebraska

If you've been watching these conference tournaments you know that winning by margin (or straight up for that matter) isn't easy when you’re a favorite. And it becomes even more difficult when the team laying the points spent much of the season struggling to achieve mediocrity. That appears to be the case for Purdue who finds itself in a position of laying -6 after a strong finish to the regular season. The Boilermakers found a way to win in Madison and were very respectable in a five-point home loss to Michigan. In the season finale, they rolled over a toxic Minnesota squad, 89-73. To me however, Purdue is being priced based on a three-game swatch of games rather than its entire body of work. It is hard to say a lot of positive things about Nebraska who finished 5-13 in Big Ten play. They were outclassed on most nights against the league's elite but against more comparable foes, they were able to Read more
