College Basketball Gambling: Wichita State pointspreads vs. other top seeds

03.04.2014     12:52 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Ready for a game of name that pointspread? Wichita State is undefeated and anyone who has ever placed a wager knows that on a neutral floor there would be a handful of teams that would be favored over the Shockers. Not sure why, but Bovada of all places came up with these lines – some of which seem a bit off (see: Louisville pk and yet Wisconsin -1.5). We'll let you be the judge.

Wichita vs. Florida -4
Wichita vs. Arizona -4
Wichita vs. Duke -3
Wichita vs. Virginia -3
Wichita -1.5 vs. Syracuse
Wichita -1.5 vs. Villanova
Wichita vs. Kansas -2
Wichita vs. Wisconsin -1.5

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Notre Dame Fighting Irish at North Carolina Tar Heels

Notre Dame at North Carolina
Recommendation: 1st half under

Notre Dame has been playing ultra-slow of late with seven of their last eight games in regulation featuring less than 60 possessions. The only game that wasn't was against North Carolina but that game still had a modest 67 possessions and 135 points (50 points 1st half). Some of that had to do with the slow nature of the ACC but Mike Brey knows how bad his defense is and the only way to offset it is to shorten the game and milk clock when they have the ball on offense. That is the blueprint of how to beat (or compete with) North Carolina. Early in the season the Tar Heels lost low possession grinders to Miami, Syracuse, and Virginia. During their run of 11 straight wins, they've managed to control tempo on most nights. However, we saw last time out that you can play the slow-down game as Virginia Tech lost 60-56 and kept the game at 60 possessions. Off an overtime loss against Pitt two days ago, I have my concerns that Notre Dame may wear down. But I look for them to come out early, value possessions, and keep UNC from easy buckets in transition.

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wise Guy Report: Who Has What It Takes to Win the Big Dance Part II

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
In Part 1 of this article last week, I took a basic look at the profile of the past 16 NCAA champions.  From that profile, I was able to make a ‘short list’ of potential champs in 2014, consisting of the following 18 teams: Cincinnati, Louisville, Virginia, Syracuse, Duke, North Carolina, Kansas, Iowa State, Creighton, Villanova, Michigan, Michigan State, Wisconsin, Iowa, Arizona, UCLA, Florida and Kentucky.

However, since last week, two of those 18 teams have been bounced from consideration, including one of the co- favorites at any sportsbook in Vegas – John Calipari’s Kentucky Wildcats.  Kentucky lost two straight last week; Iowa has lost three of their last four.  Both teams are now above the seven loss cut-off line and can be eliminated.

The next step in the elimination process is to look at the team’s records away from home.
The NCAA championship is not won on a team’s home floor.  Even with a Read more

Georgia Tech +9.5 at Florida State O/U 134
Recommendation: Georgia Tech

I made Florida State a six-point home favorite for tonight’s home game vs. Georgia Tech – 3.5 points off of the current market number. Brian Gregory's team has covered the number in five consecutive road games, including Wednesday's 65-62 loss at Notre Dame as a seven-point underdog. The Yellow Jackets raced out to a double-digit lead early in the first half and although they couldn't get the outright victory at the Joyce Center, they comfortably hooked up their backers. If you scan GT’s recent results, you'll notice a rough four-game home stretch that preceded the team's trip to South Bend. However, I'm of the opinion that those outcomes (three defeats and only one win) should mostly be ignored because leading scorer Trae Golden wasn't healthy at that time. Golden sat out one game and played limited minutes in two others due to a groin injury. Golden averages team-highs in scoring (12.6 points per game) and assists (3.1 APG). FSU is mired in a 3-8 ATS slump and has lost seven of its last 11 games outright. Being at home hasn't made much of a difference for the Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Kansas Jayhawks at Oklahoma State Cowboys

Kansas pk at Oklahoma State O/U 149.5
Recommendation: Kansas

Kansas clinched a share of the Big XII title in its last game at home against Oklahoma and go for the outright title this evening in Stillwater. The Jayhawks should be able to do so against an Oklahoma State team that has won two straight since the return of Marcus Smart, but is still not the team that everyone expected them to be at the beginning of the season. OSU snapped a seven-game losing skid in Smart's return against Texas Tech and followed that win up with a blowout win vs. TCU (combined 5-25 record in league play). The Cowboys are still a flawed team and had lost four straight games before Smart's suspension. They have very little depth and their defense has suffered without Michael Cobbins in the middle. Kansas will take advantage of the Cowboys in the paint and on the glass with Perry Ellis and Joel Embiid. Oklahoma State definitely has one of the strongest home courts in college basketball and should have an enthusiastic crowd but even a spirited effort won't be enough. Kansas has won in its last two visits to Stillwater and has beaten the Cowboys in six of the last seven Read more

College Basketball Handicapping: Injury Report 2-28-2014

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Boise State might not have its leading scorer Saturday at Wyoming. Anthony Drmic, who averages 16.9 points and 4.7 rebounds per game, sprained his ankle in Wednesday's loss at Fresno State. Drmic was considered 'questionable' as of late Friday afternoon. The Broncos are mired in a 1-7 ATS slide.

California guard Jordan Mathews injured his ankle in Wednesday's blowout loss at Arizona. Mathews (8.8 PPG) is 'questionable' for Saturday's game at Arizona State.

Bettors like me got a tough break Thursday night when Steve Alford announced the suspensions of his two best players – Jordan Adams and Kyle Anderson – less than 90 minutes before UCLA's home game vs. Oregon. The Bruins had won (SU and ATS) every PAC-12 home game by 12 points or more with just one exception – a narrow defeat against then-undefeated Arizona. Therefore, UCLA was a 7.5-point favorite vs. the Ducks. So when the news broke and the line came down, it got re-posted at -3.5 and there was no way for UCLA backers to get out of the wager without risking a four-point gap that could've resulted in double losers. Dana Altman's team eventually won in double overtime, but not before the Read more

College Basketball Handicapping: UCLA's Anderson and Adams expected back for Saturday

02.28.2014     07:52 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
A few hours prior to tip-off, UCLA suspended its top two scorers, Kyle Anderson and Jordan Adams. The Bruins dropped from a 7.5-point favorite to -3 over Oregon. The Ducks were up as much as 15 points early in the second half but UCLA fought back to force two overtimes. Oregon eventually won 87-83. The loss could cause problems for the Bruins in terms of PAC-10 Tournament seeding. At 10-5 they'll need to beat Oregon State in order to avoid the cluster of four 9-6 squads. Both Anderson and Adams are expected back for Saturday’s game vs. the Beavers.

College Basketball Gambling: Sportsbooks concerned about Wichita State

02.28.2014     07:41 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Wichita State is one win away from a perfect regular season – and the chances are really good it occurs with the Shockers assuredly a double-digit favorite vs. Missouri State on Saturday. Of course this time of year sportsbooks like to voice their concerns about "liabilities" and according to a few, Wichita is at the top of the list. The Shockers were at one point in the 100-1 to 75-1 range to win the National Championship. As of today, they look headed for a No. 1 seed.

“They are the one team we don’t want to see go very deep in the tournament right now,” Jay Rood, sports book director at the MGM Mirage (MGM) in Las Vegas, said in a telephone interview. “That’s basically our only bomb out there. We probably mispriced them a little bit.”
