A couple of college basketball notes worth passing along…

Washington State
Washington State junior guard DaVonte Lacy may return as early as this weekend when they host Washington on Saturday. Lacy has had a rough 2014 so far, missing time following surgery to remove his appendix, returning for 11 minutes and then injuring his ribs. And, without their best scorer and leader, the Cougars have been, well, just awful. While it remains to be seen if he’ll actually play on Saturday or possibly wait until next week, it will likely take some time for him to get back to full strength. And until he is back at full strength, the Cougs really don’t have much of a chance to compete on a regular basis. But, assuming he’s back to full strength by March, and assuming Que Johnson’s time in the spotlight has been put to good use, there’s a chance these guys are talented enough to spring an upset on day one of the Pac-12 Tournament. Maybe not a good chance, but a chance.

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Providence Friars at Marquette Golden Eagles

Providence +4.5 at Marquette O/U 131
Recommendation: Providence

Providence is suddenly one of the hottest teams in the Big East. Ed Cooley’s squad have put it all together recently turning a 0-2 start in conference play into a 5-2 mark thanks to their current 5-0 SU and ATS run. That included wins against Georgetown, St. John’s, Creighton, Butler and Xavier. The Friars’ biggest problem earlier this season was failure to defend and provide leading scorer Bryce Cotton with support. Both of those problems have been remedied as we've seen Providence’s trio of LaDontae Henton, Kadeem Batts and Tyler Harris pour in double digit performances throughout the run and more importantly, amped it up defensively holding foes to 66.2 points per game on just 43% shooting from the field and 20.9% from 3-point range.

Marquette isn’t in the greatest of spots. Yes, they are playing at home but the Golden Eagles are coming off not one, not two, but three overtime games in a row and they came out on the losing end of two of those games. The mini break between Saturday’s contest may help them from an energy standpoint but it Read more

College Basketball Handicapping: Florida's Walker cleared to play

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
At long last, the NCAA has reached a conclusion in the case of Florida freshman Chris Walker. The organization announced Wednesday that Walker has been suspended for 12 games and he's cleared to return in UF's home game Tuesday vs. Missouri.

Why? Well, Walker apparently received $270 from two different agents while he was playing AAU basketball during his high-school years. He also got free food, free airfare and hotel lodging from three different people. For this, he must perform 80 hours of community service. The NCAA also indicated that associates of Walker were provided free airfare for eight different trips for his AAU team.

My only question: What big-time high-school recruit doesn't receive all of the benefits listed above?

Anyway, we all know how incompetent the NCAA is, so that's not a big shocker. The good news for Florida is that there's finally a resolution to this mess.

“I appreciate all the support from UF, Coach Donovan and my teammates, and I'm looking forward to helping the team any way I can,” Walker said in a statement.

Walker is a McDonald's All-American who led Holmes Co. High School to a state title in Read more

College Basketball Gambling: Weather causes issues for teams

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
When it snows or freezes in the South, things like this and this have a tendency to occur. And for teams traveling that way, getting to the venue can become more difficult than finding a loaf of bread. Needless to say bettors should double check on the travel status of these teams. North Carolina appears to have had some difficulty getting to Atlanta. The Tar Heels arrived at their hotel at 1:45 am.

College Basketball Handicapping: Big East games trending OVER the total

01.29.2014     06:59 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Following the departure of under-the-total type teams like Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, South Florida, and Syracuse as well as the new rule changes, the Big East has seen scoring significantly up compared to last year's historical lows.  In 2013, league games produced 64.2 ppg whereas this season’s average is north of 70 ppg. As of today, there have been 39 conference games with 25 (64%) going over the total.

Team Over/Under in conference play
Creighton 5-4
Villanova 7-1
Xavier 6-1
Providence 5-2
Marquette 3-4
Seton Hall 5-2
Georgetown 4-5
St. John's 5-3
DePaul 5-3
Butler 5-3 (4 OTs)

The incredible streak of Cincinnati unders came to a screeching halt in Sunday's 80-76 win at Temple. The 156 combined went 'over the 133.5-point total with nearly four minutes to spare. The under is now 13-2 for the Bearcats this season and 26-4 in their last 30 games. As I've stated many times, these low-scoring games for Cincy are largely based upon the defensive presence provided by Justin Jackson, who protects the rim and cleans the glass. Jackson injured his ankle early in the first half and did not return.

Nevertheless, the pace for another under looked decent at halftime when Cincy had a 36-26 advantage (1st half total was 62/62.5). But Temple's Dalton Pepper caught fire in the second half, burying seven 3's and scoring 27 of his 33 points. Cincy led by 19 early in the second half, but a triple by Pepper evened the game up with 25 seconds remaining. Mick Cronin's team pulled it out, though, and Sean Kilpatrick finished with 29 points. Jackson's status for Thursday's crucial AAC showdown at Louisville is very iffy. He wasn't able to play in a loss at the Yum! Center last year, either. Before Temple struck for 76 on the Jackson-less Bearcats, they had not given up Read more

College Basketball Handicapping: Home teams have dominated Bedlam series

01.27.2014     08:46 AM     Printer Friendly
Oklahoma State -4.5 at Oklahoma O/U 162.5

A quick look at the hardwood version of Battle of Bedlam as Oklahoma State is currently a 4.5-point favorite at Oklahoma. From a straight up perspective the home team has dominated the series winning nine straight dating back to 2009. Note that the two squads met in the Big XII Tournament on two occasions (both neutral). The Sooners own a slight 5-3 ATS edge over the last eight regular season meetings. The series has also trended over the total at 6-2 O/U but this evening's total is significantly higher than recent numbers. Those shops offering a line posted 162.5 to 163.5. The first meeting in 2013 closed 124.5.

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Charleston Cougars at William & Mary Tribe

Charleston +5.5 at William & Mary
Recommendation: Charleston

Extreme contrast in styles here as College of Charleston’s tenacious defense tries to limit William & Mary’s extremely efficient offense. Each side is off a dramatic finish on Saturday with C of C losing a 58-56 heartbreaker at James Madison while W&M rode a 3-pointer at the buzzer to win at Drexel 68-66. Although the overall numbers show head coach Doug Wojcik’s Cougars to be the best defensive team in the Colonial, recent dents in the armor have been noticeable from beyond the arc. In each of their last three games Charleston has allowed 50% shooting from long distance and their 45% yielded in league play is by far the conference’s worst. With the three pointer being such an important piece of William & Mary’s offense (42.2% in CAA games), Charleston must tighten up that portion of their defense. Aside from that, Charleston seems to be able to negate Tribe assets and even hold some advantages of its own. William & Mary has been tremendous at home going 3-1 ATS and outscoring opponents by 11.7 ppg but C of C has played well on the road Read more

California at UCLA -7 O/U 153
Recommendation: UCLA

UCLA brings a 15-4 straight-up record and an 11-7 against-the-spread ledger into Sunday night's home game against California. Steve Alford's team has thrived in the role of favorite, compiling a 10-3 spread record. They’ve won 12 of its 13 home games at Pauley Pavilion, producing an 8-4 ATS mark in the process. The only blemish on the Bruins' home resume is a nail-biting defeat against undefeated and top-ranked Arizona (79-75).

I backed UCLA on Thursday night when it cruised to a 91-74 win over Stanford as 5.5-point home chalk. Tony Parker enjoyed a breakout performance, as the Atlanta product scored a game-high 22 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Jordan Adams added 19 points, while Kyle Anderson chipped in with 13 points and 10 boards. Adams averages a team-best 17.5 points per game, but Anderson is the catalyst and most complete player for UCLA. Anderson has a very unique set of skills. Read more

Georgetown at Creighton -11.5 O/U 144.5
Recommendation: Creighton

Georgetown has dropped three straight and four of their last five games, and now heads to the lion’s den to face Creighton on one of the top home courts in college basketball. This will be the Hoyas’ first trip to Omaha, and they come in with a short-handed team. Center Josh Smith and guard Jabril Trawick remain out of the lineup, leaving coach John Thompson with two solid guards and little else. D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera and Markel Starks scored 52 of Georgetown’s 72 points in its home loss to Marquette while everyone else combined to go 6-of-26. Thompson tried to limit their minutes against Marquette, inserting seldom-used guard Stephen Domingo into the game early in the first half and guard John Caprio, a former walk-on, recorded a career-high 22 minutes. Smith-Rivera and Starks still wound up playing 40 minutes each. This could definitely come into play tonight in a Read more
