Northwestern was overwhelmed by Baylor’s size and athleticism last year, thoroughly whipped in a 69-41 home loss to the Bears. Don’t expect a dramatically different result in tonight’s rematch – the Wildcats deficiencies are likely to be on full display once again this evening.
The Wildcats were annihilated on their home floor by Maryland in the ACC-Big Ten showdown last week, losing by 20. It didn’t get any better last weekend, when Northwestern held Illinois-Chicago to 31% shooting, won the rebounding battle by 13 and STILL lost at home by six as double-digit favorites. Head coach Bill Carmody has limited depth once again, bad news against an athletic, fast paced squad like Baylor. Toughest challenge of the season for Alabama's youthful lineup as they head up north to face a very experience and talented Cincinnati squad. The Crimson Tide are a perfect 6-0 with decent wins over South Dakota State, Oregon State and Villanova. But those were at home and on neutral courts. It will be very tough for a rotation that features 4 sophomores, 2 freshmen, and 2 juniors to go on the road to a hostile environment and hang for a full 40 minutes. Especially considering the Crimson Tide are notorious for their outside shooting struggles – you have to knock down threes in this type of underdog role. Despite returning only one starter from last year, I think San Francisco is sitting on a really good season. UCLA transfer De'End Parker has already made a huge impact (20.3 ppg) and Cody Doolin provides experience at the point guard position. They also have Cole Dickerson on the front line who is averaging 13 rebounds per game. The Dons have improved each of Rex Walters' four seasons and should be considered a sleeper in the WCC with a nice mix of veterans and talented underclassmen. Montana meanwhile continues to be without the services of their best player, Will Cherry. The Grizzlies have fared well thus far without him but find themselves in a difficult spot with the second of back-to-back road games; the first of which a 15-point loss at BYU on Wednesday. My clients and I cashed a ticket fading the Buffalo Bulls in their loss to in-city rival Canisius last week. The Bulls have been woeful so far this season. Their lone DI win came against Evansville in the Purple Aces’ first game without injured star Colt Ryan. They suffered three very bad losses to the likes of Princeton and Western Illinois on their home floor and against a sub-par Yale squad on a neutral court.
The Bulls are averaging just 59 points per game despite facing some rather mediocre competition. Tonight they take a big step up in class against Temple who boast a very solid core group of players led by Khalif Wyatt (14.7 ppg) and Scootie Randall (21.7 ppg). They have inside and outside scoring balance that will really cause problems for Buffalo.

Level of competition played thus far and home floor advantage both stand as reasons to support UCSB tonight but despite those positives, I fully believe the gap in fundamentals is too wide for the Gauchos to overcome. Roster depletion has left Santa Barbara extremely young and unbalanced in this early part of the season. Head coach Bob Williams offense is now dependent upon the scoring of freshman SF Taran Brown (15.0 ppg) sophomore PF Alan Williams (14.6 ppg). The youthful tandem accounts for 45.1% of the team’s scoring and they’ve attempted 119 field goals while the other 11 players have combined to attempt just 156. This matchup poses real problems for Santa Barbara on the inside because their total reliance on the rugged interior play of Williams (6-7, 240) is not only matched, but likely outdone by Wyoming’s senior paint presence Leonard Washington. Northern Illinois was the worst team in the MAC last year, finishing with a 5-26 record for the season. It’s nothing new or different for this bottom tier program – the Huskies have lost at least 20 games in each of the last six seasons. This year’s Huskies squad doesn’t look a whole lot better, with only two juniors and one senior on the roster.
Head coach Mark Montgomery is relying heavily on a group of six true freshmen, and the early results have not been promising, including a double digit loss at lowly Nebraska-Omaha, and a seven point home loss to Loyola-Chicago this past weekend; a game where their offense grinded to a halt (46 points on 30% shooting) against a solid defensive foe. The Huskies have virtually no home court advantage, regularly playing in front of three-digit crowds.

I watched most of Northwestern's overtime win over Illinois State on Saturday. The most notable thing in that contest was how slow and patient the Wildcats were on offense. ISU had come into that contest averaging 74.4 possessions per game but Northwestern wasn't willing to play that style. At the end of regulation it was tied 55-55 and even with overtime the final score was deceiving as the two teams scored 19 points in the last minute due to fouling and free throws. Tonight, Northwestern faces a Maryland squad that like ISU has the ability to score and a desire at times to get out in transition. I don't think Northwestern, especially at home, is going to want to play and up and down game against the Terps so expect to see somewhere in the low 60s in terms of possessions. If we can avoid a crazy night from deep from both teams I think the under had decent value.
