College Basketball Gambling: Sportsbooks concerned about Wichita State

02.28.2014     07:41 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Wichita State is one win away from a perfect regular season – and the chances are really good it occurs with the Shockers assuredly a double-digit favorite vs. Missouri State on Saturday. Of course this time of year sportsbooks like to voice their concerns about "liabilities" and according to a few, Wichita is at the top of the list. The Shockers were at one point in the 100-1 to 75-1 range to win the National Championship. As of today, they look headed for a No. 1 seed.

“They are the one team we don’t want to see go very deep in the tournament right now,” Jay Rood, sports book director at the MGM Mirage (MGM) in Las Vegas, said in a telephone interview. “That’s basically our only bomb out there. We probably mispriced them a little bit.”

College Basketball Gambling: No rest for UW-Green Bay despite No. 1 seed

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Good article on UW-Green Bay's intentions the final two games of the regular season. At 12-2 in Horizon play, the Phoenix have clinched a share of first place and the No. 1 seed. A couple of key players are banged up but following Saturday's game at Detroit, they'll have ample time to rest thanks to the conference tournament's double bye format. Also note that tonight's game at Oakland is a rare ESPNU appearance.

“We have something to play for, we want to finish strong and carry momentum into league play,” said Wardle, whose team already has clinched a berth to the NIT should it not make the NCAAs. “There is a lot of reasons why we want to keep winning, so to cut Keifer’s minutes down drastically probably won’t happen. But maybe a minute or two here could definitely happen for us.”

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Siena Saints at Quinnipiac Bobcats

Siena +6.5 at Quinnipiac
Recommendation: Siena

This is one of those cases where revenge is meaningful as the Siena Saints battle the Quinnipiac Bobcats. Siena lost in devastating fashion in the prior meeting; led by 9 points with 4 minutes left only to lose in overtime. Siena has been a model of inconsistency throughout MAAC conference play with a 9-9 record but this game means more to them than just earning revenge against Quinnipiac. Siena is hanging on to one of the top 6 seeds in the MAAC, just one game ahead of 7th place Marist. Why is that significant? The top 6 teams in the MAAC at the conclusion of the regular season all get a first round bye to the quarterfinals. Siena controls their own destiny in that regard and can clinch one of those bye spots as long as they win at least one of its last two games. It isn’t easy to step in front of Quinnipiac right now as they’ve played great basketball winning seven straight games including a 5-2 ATS mark. The Bobcats are alone in 2nd place in the MAAC and still have an outside chance of tracking down Iona for first but the more likely scenario 2nd or 3rd. Quinnipiac’s defense has Read more

College Basketball Handicapping: Iowa-Indiana play rescheduled contest

Iowa -4.5 at Indiana O/U 145

Rematch of last week's canceled game between Iowa and Indiana. Since then the Hawkeyes have dropped two straight while the Hoosiers split with Northwestern and Wisconsin. In the loss to UW, the Hoosiers were up 10 at half but outscored 50-29 after the break. Note that the original line for this game was Iowa -4 O/U 144 at CRIS.

“Iowa is very hard to get ready for, and that's why they are so successful. They have excellent players and Fran (McCaffery) is one of the top coaches in our league and in the country. He does such a great job of going from game-to-game, doing whatever it takes to win that game.

“They are extremely unselfish with one another and cause so many issues with their versatility. We have a great task in front of us, but we have a group that works very, very hard. We are going to have to be very good in transition defense, active on the glass and keep drivers from creating havoc while making the simple plays on offense.

College Basketball Handicapping: Arizona seeks revenge vs. California

California at Arizona -13 O/U 133

Tonight marks the rematch between California and Arizona – the Bears handed the Wildcats their first loss of the season a few weeks back in Berkley. In that game, Arizona's Brandon Ashley (2 points, 2 minutes) hurt his ankle and hasn't played since. Cal has been very competitive in the series (5-5 last 10, never losing by more than 10 points.

“Obviously, they’re the first team to beat us this year, so there’s a little more excitement,” Johnson said. “I felt like the way they beat us, we weren’t full-handed. We didn’t have time to adjust to Brandon’s injury. Now it’s a little bit different. We can game plan and in the last week or so we’ve started to feel comfortable on offense.”

“Losing Ashley in the middle of a game probably put them in a position where they had to play people in combinations they weren’t used to,”

College Basketball Gambling Alert: Cleveland State hammered by flu bug

Youngstown State at Cleveland State -7

If you are going to tonight's Youngstown State-Cleveland State game and sitting within spitting distance of the CSU bench, bring hand sanitizer. Four players are currently questionable with the flu. The Vikings opened -10 but have been bet down to -7.5. Note that CSU's bench plays only 27% of the team's minutes (252nd nationally).

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Missouri Tigers at Georgia Bulldogs

Missouri at Georgia
Recommendation: 1st half UNDER

Despite all the crap basketball in the SEC, Missouri finds itself with the worst defensive efficiency mark in the league (1.10 points per possession allowed). Following Saturday's loss to Alabama in which the Tigers coughed up 80 points, Frank Haith called out his team for a lack of effort. According to reports, they appear committed to turning things around: “They played harder than us down there, so I think that was the main thing,” Brown said. “There’s always going to be X’s and O’s, but I think effort is the main part of defense.” I'm not expecting a massive turnaround but a little effort coupled with Georgia's slow pace and offensive struggles gives us a nice betting opportunity. Out of the Bulldogs' last five games, the highest point total was 130. And in the first meeting in Columbia, the score was 56-56 at the end of regulation. I'll call for Missouri to come out with a lot of defensive intensity early on and will make a play on the first half under.

College Basketball Gambling: Florida says better defense on tap vs. Vanderbilt

02.25.2014     08:20 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Florida -8 at Vanderbilt O/U 123.5

After allowing 70 points in regulation for the first time in SEC play, the Florida Gators are hell-bent on a better defensive showing tonight against Vanderbilt. Note that in Florida's 75-71 win over Ole Miss the pace was once again slow (63 possessions). The Gators have been able to control tempo for much of the season with 57-64 possessions in their last 12 games.

"We're not a great defensive team now,” Yeguete said. “I think our help defense is not as good. We've done a better job in the second half than the first half, especially (Saturday) on (Ole Miss guard) Marshall Henderson.

“I think we just have to make an extra effort how we talked about. I think we can do a better job doing that in the next few games."
