Canisius -4.5 at Niagara O/U 158
Recommendation: Canisius

We cashed in with a MAAC road favorite last night in Manhattan’s 86-69 blowout win over Rider and I think we have another rock solid opportunity tonight backing another road favorite with Canisius. Despite being one of the worst teams in the MAAC, Niagara has stepped up with two of its better efforts in their last two home games against conference powers Iona and Manhattan. Niagara lost those two games by a single point. Those were bitter defeats for the Purple Eagles who had opportunities but failed to get that key basket or defensive stop down the stretch to turn. This could be a tough situation for a full effort while the Golden Griffins are likely to be in a focused and intense mood after dropping two straight to Iona and Manhattan.

Canisius defeated Niagara in the previous meeting earlier this season 87-74. Niagara had no answers defensively for Billy Baron who piled up 31 points on 10-for-17 shooting. Niagara’s only real offensive threat, Antoine Mason, got his points in the previous meeting but the Griffins did a good job of keeping everyone else under wraps. Chris Read more

College Basketball Gambling: Arizona State tries to break through vs. rival Arizona

Arizona -5.5 at Arizona State

Tonight in Tempe Arizona State will look to avenge an early season 91-68 blowout loss to rival Arizona. Both teams will have a slightly different look this time around with ASU's Jermaine Marshall back in the lineup and UA's Brandon Ashley out with an injury. The Wildcats have won 6 of the last 7 in the series (5-2 ATS).

“Any time you’re missing a key player, it’s hard to judge that team,” UA coach Sean Miller said of Marshall, who’s been at full strength for a couple of weeks. “When he’s come back and become healthy, to me, they’ve almost regained the form they had prior to our game when they were playing excellent basketball.”

“We’ve played them now three times since I’ve been here and I haven’t won one, so it’s about time I get one,” ASU sophomore point guard Jahii Carson said.

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Northwestern Wildcats at Michigan State Spartans

Northwestern at Michigan State -14 O/U 119.5
Recommendation: Under

Thanks to a big push towards the over I see no reason not to play Northwestern under the total...again. In listening to Chris Collins, it is clear the Wildcats have zero depth and as a result must slow down the pace of the game and focus nearly all of their attention on playing defense and keeping the game close. Offensively, Northwestern has topped a point per possession once in Big Ten play whereas they've failed to top 0.90 in 8 out of 11 games. On the road against arguably the best defense in the league, it'll be a struggle to top 50 points. Michigan State meanwhile has had its issues offensively due to injuries. Tom Izzo noted that the team's desire to push the pace has been hampered because of not being able to play with the ideal personnel. The first meeting featured 94 points and 54 possessions. Even with drastic improvement on a number of fronts, topping 120 will be Read more

College Basketball Handicapping: Wisconsin eager to put defensive clamps on Minnesota

02.13.2014     11:55 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Minnesota at Wisconsin 8.5 O/U 134

Wisconsin is looking for a little bit of defensive revenge tonight after allowing 81 (1.39 ppp) to Minnesota in Minneapolis. UW's defense has tightened up considerably of late, holding its last five opponents to 58, 65, 59, 63, and 58. The pace of most of those games was slow but it's a far cry from when the Badgers surrendered 70 or more in five straight back in January. The betting markets appear aware of this mini-transformation. Ken Pom has tonight's game totaled at 139, CRIS opened 136, and it has since been bet down to as low as 133.

"That was definitely a low point," Dekker said. "Third straight game where guys were coming off screens hitting shots, and us letting guys in the lane. Stuff that really bothers you. You go home and think about why did we let this

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Manhattan Jaspers at Rider Broncs

Manhattan -3.5 at Rider
Recommendation: Manhattan

Rider is seeking revenge tonight against Manhattan but that might be all the Broncs have going for them in this game. Manhattan is the better team with greater depth and they have shown recent domination against Rider on multiple occasions. Manhattan cruised to a 67-51 win earlier this season and notched a 62-51 win last year when they last faced off on this court. The Jaspers were sleepwalking a bit through their last game against Niagara, barely escaping with a 78-77 win. It was their third win in a row but not a very sharp performance and perhaps a wakeup call. Manhattan’s strong senior class of George Beamon, Michael Alvarado and Rhamel Brown was too much for Rider to handle in the first meeting as they combined for 38 points.

Rider had a solid three-game winning streak earlier this month but those wins came against Fairfield, St. Peter’s and Monmouth – three of the MAAC’s worst teams. The Broncs have since dropped two straight, losing outright 68-61 as home favorites against Marist and suffering an ugly 82-61 blowout loss on the road at Quinnipiac. Rider has Read more

College Basketball Handicapping: UCF's looking to play younger players

02.12.2014     11:23 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Central Florida at Memphis -13.5 O/U 145.5

Losers of eight straight (1-7 ATS), UCF head coach Donnie Jones hinted of a youth movement – at least for the rest of the regular season. In last Sunday's 75-55 loss at UConn, UCF's starters played 31, 20, 18, 18 and 14 minutes.

“You focus on positive,” Jones said after his team’s most recent 75-55 loss to Connecticut. “That’s all you can focus on right now with some of these young guys. We were committed to starting those older guys and getting those young guys a chance. So, you look at the bench and I think we scored 34 points off the bench and that was with our young guys.”

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Syracuse Orange at Pittsburgh Panthers

Syracuse at Pittsburgh -2.5 O/U 125
Recommendation: Under

I don't think there is any debate that tonight's Syracuse-Pitt game is going to be slow. In ACC play, the Orange are averaging an incredibly low 55 possessions per game while Pitt isn't exactly pushing the tempo either at just over 61. In the first meeting, even with both squads scoring a point per possession and attempting 41 free throws, the game produced only 113 points. Typically when you get one "extreme" in the first meeting (slow pace, low scoring) teams make adjustments and the opposite takes place in the rematch. I'm not sure we see that tonight as both teams indicated it was likely to be another bloodbath. Obviously with a total this low crazy things can happen late to bust a play on the under. But I don't project more than 60 possessions and in this type of atmosphere, buckets will be at an absolute premium.

College Basketball Gambling: DePaul loses leading scorer Melvin

02.12.2014     08:03 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
DePaul announced that leading scorer Cleveland Melvin is no longer enrolled at school. Melvin was suspended two weeks ago for an undisclosed violation. Melvin was one of the few legitimate Big East caliber players Oliver Purnell was able to recruit and develop. The Blue Demons were 0-4 SU, 2-2 ATS without Melvin.

“I can't make any comments because of privacy acts and that kind of thing,” coach Oliver Purnell told WSCR-AM 670 on Monday night. “But the bottom line is he's no longer a part of our team and we've got to move on.”

Asked how his players handled the news, Purnell told the Score, “They reacted fine, they went out and practiced. I can't tell you how they reacted in their private moments ... but the guys who are here, on our team, are moving forward.”

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Utah State Aggies at Colorado State Rams

Utah State at Colorado State -4.5 O/U 134
Recommendation: Colorado State

Utah State’s next win and cover on the Mountain West highway will be their first.  The Aggies are 0-5 SU, 0-5 ATS in their first five conference road games, struggling in unfamiliar venues after rolling through the depleted WAC in recent years.

And the Aggies have gotten worse in recent road tilts, losing their last two contests by a combined 37 points at UNLV and Wyoming. Yes, Utah State snapped their five game skid with a 2-0 home stand, but their wins (Nevada and Boise) both came against slumping foes.

Colorado State certainly isn’t slumping right now – they’re coming into tonight’s game off two of their best efforts of the year, blowing out UNLV on this floor and beating Air Force by double digits in Colorado Springs.  The Rams have been taking care of business on their home floor – their only two losses in Ft Collins since November both came against Mountain West elites (San Diego State and New Mexico).  At 4-7 in conference play, Utah State is a long way from being an elite MWC squad.
