Sun Belt Conference Tournament Betting Preview

Sun Belt Conference Tournament Preview

The Sun Belt Conference Tournament has a long history of craziness. Upsets happen with regularity, like last season when the top two seeds were bounced in their first game and the finals featured a No. 5 vs. No. 7 matchup. Of the last 12 teams to participate in the championship game, seven were a fourth seed or lower. On paper No. 1 Middle Tennessee State is as close to a lock as you can get to cut down the nets this conference tournament season. The Blue Raiders rolled through league play (14-2) last year and lost to No. 9 Arkansas State in the quarterfinals but this year’s edition is even stronger; a veteran club on a mission.

First Round Pick: North Texas
For much of the season, North Texas was an easy bet against. Longtime head coach Johnny Jones left for LSU, they had a ton of injuries, and Tony Mitchell underperformed. But the Mean Green have talent and a little bit of confidence having won four of six to close out the regular season. The also got point guard Chris Jones back. Jones missed practically all of January and February but returned and played the last two Read more

MVC Tournament Gambling Free Pick: Southern Illinois Salukis vs. Missouri State Bears

Southern Illinois -2.5 vs. Missouri State
Recommendation: Southern Illinois

There's no question that Southern Illinois is playing their best basketball of the season right now.  The Salukis have won five of their last six, ending their long road losing streak in the process with an impressive upset at Drake on senior day last weekend.  The key to their recent surge has been defensive pressure leading to easy fast break buckets.  They've scored at least 15 points on fast breaks twice in their last three games and their 277 team steals this year were their most in the last seven years.

Missouri State head coach Paul Lusk knows what he's up against.  "They’ve done a terrific job with that (forcing turnovers). They've played about as solid and inspired basketball as you could play over the last month.  They've really come together, but there’s no doubt that their turnovers, and the turnovers that Read more

College Basketball Handicapping: Ken Pomery's conference tournament projections

03.07.2013     06:09 AM     Printer Friendly
If you haven't already checked them out, here are Ken Pomeroy's conference tournament projections. He uses what is called Log5 – a Bill James formula designed to give the probability of a particular matchup. For example, Middle Tennessee State, the prohibitive favorite to win the Sun Belt Tournament, is 94.4% to reach the semifinals, 86.2% to reach the finals, and 75.6% to cut down the nets.

Missouri Valley Conference Tournament Preview

Midway through January it looked as if the MVC was Creighton and Wichita State and everyone else. But the competitive nature of the conference took over and once in the hunt for a potential 5-7 seed in the NCAA Tournament, the Blue Jays and Shockers slipped a bit the back half of the slate and now find themselves likely in but with no guarantees. Neither team, especially Wichita, can afford to get bounced in their opening game against a lower seeded team. There were a handful of teams that at times showed the quality needed to cut down the nets in St. Louis. Northern Iowa finished 7-1 including wins over Wichita and Creighton. Illinois State reeled off seven of eight after opening the year 0-6. Indiana State had wins against all four of those squads but faded down the stretch. And senior-laden Evansville quietly finished 10-8. Historically, the top seeds have fared well. Last year snapped a five-year streak of the No. 1 seed reaching the finals when No. 2 Creighton beat No. 4 Illinois State in overtime.

West Coast Conference Tournament Preview

Overview: The WCC is another mid-major conference that goes to great lengths in order to assure their top teams have the shortest route possible to the championship. No. 1 seed Gonzaga along with No. 2 St. Mary’s get to sit and watch until the semifinals which will take place on the fourth day of tourney action. Because every team in the nine team conference qualifies, there is a No. 8 vs. No. 9 play-in game between Portland and Loyola Marymount which kicks off the tournament later this evening. Portland defeated LMU twice this season (68-64 Jan 12 @ LMU and 69-60 Feb 7 at home). Loyola has led each of the two games by double digits either at halftime or into the second half. The Orleans Arena venue in Las Vegas has been hosting this tournament since 2009 and it provides a very slight fan advantage to BYU. Gonzaga and St. Mary’s have won 12 of the last 14 conference tournaments rotating the last four. Last season, top seed St. Mary’s closed as a +2.5 point underdog to the Zags and won in overtime 78-74. San Diego is the only other team to capture the crown since 1999 winning twice Read more

College Basketball Betting Recap: Indiana Hoosiers Stunned AGAIN!

Just when you thought things couldn’t get any monkey wrenchier in the Big 10 regular season championship picture…the Ohio State Buckeyes go into Bloomington and take out the Indiana Hoosiers on Senior Night. This was supposed to be the evening where Indiana made everyone forget last week's loss to Minnesota while coasting to a win as an 8-point favorite...then celebrated the outright title with their boisterous fans.

Now, Indiana has to win this weekend on the road at Michigan to secure that honor. If they don’t, we could have a FOUR-WAY quad championship at 13-5.

*If Michigan beats Indiana, both finish 13-5

*If Ohio State wins at home against Illinois, the Buckeyes finish at 13-5

*The winner of Thursday’s Wisconsin/Michigan State matchup will be 12-5, and could join the mega-quad with a weekend win.

Heading into the Big 10 tournament and the Big Dance, it’s probably best to think of this as about a five-way toss-up. Read more

College Basketball Gambling: Wyoming's Washington doubtful vs. Colorado State

03.06.2013     07:35 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Colorado State -4.5 at Wyoming

Wyoming's Leonard Washington (back, ankle) is currently doubtful for tonight's game against Colorado State. Washington missed two games against UNLV and San Diego State and Wyoming was outscored 144-93 and outrebounded 75-35. He returned against Air Force and played 33 minutes (15 points, 13 rebounds). Then last time out against New Mexico, his back flared up and he managed only 10 minutes.

“There hasn’t been much improvement,” UW coach Larry Shyatt said Monday of Washington’s newest injury -- a back ailment.

“There was a tweak,” Shyatt said. “I think it’s gotten more severe rather than less severe.”

College Basketball Betting: Despite streak, UCLA nervous about trip to Washington State

UCLA -3 at Washington State

UCLA has won 19 straight games at Washington State but 10 off those were by five points or fewer. Off last weekend's big win over Arizona, head coach Ben Howland seems leery of tonight's game. Bettors are as well as Wazzu was steamed down from +4 to +2.5 on the overnight lines. A little buy back has the Bruins -3/-3.5 as of this morning. UCLA won last year’s meeting 63-60. The year before that, a 58-54 overtime victory.

“Those of us that have been there know how many close calls we’ve had in Pullman here in recent memory,” Howland said of playing at Pullman. “I know and have tried to really impress upon our players that if we don’t show up and play our best, we are definitely putting ourselves in an opportunity to lose on Read more

Ohio Valley Conference Tournament Preview

This will mark the third year of the double-bye system for the OVC Tournament. Eight teams made the field; the bottom four play on Wednesday. The No. 3 and No. 4 seeds get a first round bye. The two division winners, No. 1 Belmont (East) and No. 2 Murray State (West) received double-byes. Over the last 11 tournaments, no team has won in all with more than four regular season conference losses. If history repeats itself, either Belmont (14-2) or Eastern Kentucky (12-4) will cut down the nets. Murray State benefited from the OVC splitting into two divisions thanks to the addition of Belmont. The Racers had the fourth-best record (10-6) but won the weaker West Division, hence their No. 2 seed.

First Round Pick: Southeast Missouri
There were a lot of expectations for Dickey Nutt's bunch heading into the season but the Redhawks got off to a sluggish 3-7 start in league play and were on the verge of potentially being left out of the postseason. But the back half of the schedule was more favorable and this team started to gain confidence winning five out of its last six league games by Read more

College Basketball Gambling Free Pick: Illinois Fighting Illini at Iowa Hawkeyes

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Illinois at Iowa -4.5 O/U 135.5
Recommendation: Iowa

The betting markets seem to think that Illinois has turned the corner after reeling off six wins in its last seven games.  I’m not buying that argument.  Let me break down those six wins right here.
First, the Illini positively stole one at home against Indiana when DJ Richardson got hot down the stretch as the Hoosiers blew a 14-point second half lead.  Then they faced Minnesota when the Gophers were in the midst of their awful mid-season slump.  Then came one good win, a home blowout over Purdue.  Their last three victories have come against the three weakest teams in the conference (Penn State, Northwestern and Nebraska), and two of those three were tight – they barely squeaked past the Nittany Lions and had to rally from behind in the last six minutes on Senior Day to beat the Cornhuskers.

So for all of their recent success, Illinois’ recent hot streak Read more
