College Basketball Betting Free Play: Marquette Golden Eagles at Xavier Musketeers

Marquette at Xavier -4 O/U 132
Recommendation: Xavier

The Xavier Musketeers have flown under the radar this season despite a 12-3 SU, 9-4 ATS start. And we know they have owned a very strong home court advantage at the Cintas Center at 11-0 SU, 7-2 ATS. Xavier notched a pair of home wins to open Big East play against St. John’s and Butler winning each of those games by 10 and 11 points respectively. The Musketeers have gotten terrific point guard play from Semaj Christon who is averaging 14.7 points per game and 20 assists without committing a single turnover in the team’s last three home games. They’ve also done a good job of preparing for conference play by facing a litany of quality foes in non-conference play: Tennessee (twice), Iowa, USC, Cincinnati and Alabama.

Marquette was put through the ringer themselves in a difficult non-conference schedule with games against Wisconsin, San Diego State, New Mexico and Arizona State. But the Golden Eagles didn’t exactly pass those tests with flying colors. They were 0-4 SU in those games all away from home and when you combine that with their ugly 67-49 road loss at Read more

College Basketball Gambling: Temple banged up heading into tonight's game vs. USF

01.09.2014     08:25 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
South Florida at Temple -6.5

Looks like Temple is going to be down to only eight healthy players for tonight's game against South Florida. The Owls have been playing a pretty fast clip this year (69.5 possessions per game). After an 0-2 start to AAC play and short on bodies, it wouldn't shock us to see Temple play a little closer to the vest this evening.

“We’re approaching a day-to-day status [for Williams],” Temple head coach Fran Dunphy tells KYW Newsradio. “I don’t know that he’ll be ready on Thursday, but hopefully after that he’ll be able to give us some minutes and get into a game. I think the swelling has gone down, I think we’re in decent shape here, the doctors and the trainers are pleased with his progress after Saturday.”

“We have a couple of guys sitting out as transfers, so the practice pieces are taken care of,” Dunphy says. “The game pieces, we have to manage that very carefully, obviously, making substitutions and

College Basketball Handicapping: Ole Miss' Henderson sits, team may be better off

Auburn at Ole Miss -9

Interesting quote by Ole Miss head coach Andy Kennedy as the team prepares to play without the services of Marshall Henderson for the first two games of SEC play. Kennedy stated matter-of-factly that point guard Jarvis Summers has been the team's best player. The numbers back that up as Summers sports the team's best offensive rating (124.3) by a wide margin. In my opinion, the loss of Henderson doesn't hurt the team one bit. In fact, Ole Miss may even be better without him. Yes, Henderson can score and is a safety valve for when the shot clock is ticking down, but I've watched enough of Ole Miss basketball to know that the offense runs a lot smoother without Henderson and not to mention the incredible liability he is on defense – hence why Ole Miss has been spotted playing zone with Henderson on the floor despite having more than enough athletes to play better-than-average Read more

After further review, UTEP's suspensions for sports betting are ridiculous

01.09.2014     07:44 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
The smoke has cleared following the suspension of three UTEP players for sports betting. As mentioned, there is currently no evidence – according to the FBI and university – that the players bet on UTEP games or where shaving points. Now it is pretty obvious that with the FBI's involvement, there was a one point suspicion of exactly that. Certainly the FBI is aware that betting on sports is fairly common among college athletes – so common that a poll from 2012 showed that 57% of male athletes gambled on sports in some capacity. What is concerning is how quickly the players were shown the door. The NCAA stipulates that athletes caught gambling will be suspended for one year as well as lose a year of eligibility. As pointed out by local ESPN radio host Steve Kaplowitz, the situation is unprecedented in that there haven't been many (if any) cases of athletes being suspended for sports betting that Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: South Carolina Gamecocks at Florida Gators

South Carolina at Florida -16
Recommendation: Florida

Tonight’s game at the O’Dome could be labeled one of redemption as South Carolina looks to atone for last season’s humiliating 75-36 loss in this same building. In the minds of oddsmakers, strides have already been made by the Gamecocks who were +23.5 point underdogs in this game last year but opened only +14.5 this time around. The number has since been pushed up to Florida -16 but still, there’s a point differential that suggests a narrowing of the separation between these teams. There’s perceived recent improvement made by the Gamecocks who enter this contest on a four-game winning streak straight up and 3-1 against the spread. Cynical handicappers are hesitant to read too much into the current success because of the inconsistency that has been shown by South Carolina this season. The discrepancy between performances on back-to-back night versus talented foes St. Mary’s and Boise State at the Diamond Head Classic just a shade over two weeks ago shows it best. This team has been all or nothing against every quality team they’ve face this season. The Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Texas Longhorns at Oklahoma State Cowboys

Texas +12.5 at Oklahoma State
Recommendation: Texas

This isn’t a bet against Oklahoma State as much as it is a bet on Texas.  The Longhorns have made believers out of me, despite their youth, with no seniors and only one junior on Rick Barnes’ squad this year.  But we’ve seen Texas hang tough away from home, gutting out tough road wins at Temple and North Carolina; blowing out DePaul and hanging tough with BYU for the full 40 minutes at the Sprint Center in Kansas City.

Texas is not a team to lay points with, as we saw in their home loss to Oklahoma on Saturday – they seem to play up or down to their level of competition.  But they covered wire-to-wire in both previous tries as an underdog away from home; a track record that comes into play again tonight.

Texas has extraordinary talent even though they’re young, with five guys averaging in double figures.  They’ve got a defensive mindset, holding foes to 39% shooting for the season.  And the Longhorns are massive in the low post with Cameron Ridley, Jonathan Holmes, Prince Ibeh and Connor Lammert all taking up Read more

College Basketball Handicapping: Nevada travels to UNLV

01.08.2014     07:48 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Battle of the Silver State goes tonight with Nevada taking on rival UNLV in Las Vegas. The Wolf Pack have been up and down this season but are off to a 2-0 start in Mountain West play. It coincided with the eligibility of forward AJ West who scored 27 points and grabbed 21 rebounds combined in both victories. Nevada is also slated to return Marqueze Coleman who can provide relief to Deonte Burton – Burton is no. 1 in the country in percentage of minutes used. UNLV, who is off a home loss to Air Force – its fourth home loss of the season – has won eight straight in the series but Nevada has covered three of the last four.

“I’m not sure how long it’s been since we won there,” Wolf Pack point guard Deonte Burton said (answer: the Wolf Pack last won at UNLV in November 2005). “It would be big for the program, it would be big for the fans and it would Read more

Update: No evidence of point shaving at UTEP, kids suspended for betting on sports

01.07.2014     02:37 PM     Printer Friendly

False alarm. No point shaving at UTEP just a couple of kids betting on sports. Good thing the FBI was on top of it as Operation Waste of Time goes down as a "W."

"To date, there was no indication that point shaving was involved. However, per NCAA rules, any type of sports gambling is prohibited and results in a one-year suspension and loss of a year of eligibility," the school said in a statement. "All three players are upperclassmen, and therefore their college basketball careers are over. They are no longer enrolled at UTEP and are no longer a part of our basketball program."

UTEP Miners at center of point shaving rumors

01.07.2014     11:33 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Here's your annual college basketball point shaving rumor. Back on December 28, UTEP suspended leading scorer McKenzie Moore and Jalen Ragland for violation of team rules. Head coach Tim Floyd wouldn't spill the beans but said that details of the suspension would eventually be revealed. So with no answers and time to kill, rumors began to swirl – one such rumor being point shaving. UTEP hasn't played since December 29 and plays host to Charlotte on Thursday.

USC +12.5 at UCLA O/U 153
Recommendation: USC

UCLA and USC's new head coaches Steve Alford and Andy Enfield spent the offseason going to war on the recruiting trail and making quick enemies of each other. Both have enjoyed solid seasons going into Sunday's PAC-12 debut for both schools. Southern Cal has an RPI of 67, going 2-3 against RPI Top-100 opponents. The Trojans' largest magin of defeat is 15 in a 94-79 loss to Villanova, which is No. 5 in the RPI Rankings and beat Kansas in the same holiday tournament.USC has quality wins at Dayton and over Xavier (RPI #26) on a neutral court. The Trojans, who are 9-4 straight up and 6-4-1 against the spread, have won five of their last six games. They have gone 4-0-1 ATS during this span with the only outright loss coming by a 72-71 count at Long Beach State. Enfield’s team has won outright in each of its last three games in the underdog role. In fact, the victories over Dayton and Xavier came in double-digit underdog situations. And that’s the same role USC will have at UCLA, which was favored by 12.5 at most books early this morning. In six games against foes with an RPI of 150 or better, Read more
