NCAA Tournament - East Region
Friday, 10:40 am PT - Dayton, Ohio
No. 9 Temple vs. No. 8 NC State
CRIS Opener: NC State -3.5 O/U 149
CRIS Current: NC State -4.5 O/U 149
Recommendation: NC State

When handicapping NCAA Tournament games, the matchups are an obvious focal point. Fundamental advantages that are seen when examining games will often cause bettors to react immediately and play the side with a perceived on court edge. If there’s one thing you learn after being around the sports gambling circuit as long as I have, it’s that you’d better cross examine everything you feel is in your favor before you make a play. Such is the case in this particular matchup where at first glance this appears to be a hand in glove fit for the NC State Wolfpack. Head coach Mark Gottfried’s crew is universally defined, and rightfully so, to be an extremely talented group that has failed to learn the art of continual focus. They have a Read more

NCAA Tournament Betting Preview: No. 13 South Dakota State Jackrabbits vs. No. 4 Michigan Wolverines

NCAA Tournament - South Region
Thursday, 4:15 pm PT, Auburn Hills, Mich.
No. 13 South Dakota State vs. No. 4 Michigan
CRIS Opener: Michigan -12 O/U 138.5
CRIS Current: Michigan -11 O/U 141
Recommendation: South Dakota State

The South Dakota State Jackrabbits have a tough matchup in playing Michigan in Auburn Hills. They were a team that I thought had a good shot at a Cinderella run, but this is a very tough draw in the first round. South Dakota State has an experienced, talented team led by point guard Nate Wolters. He led them to a road win at New Mexico earlier this year and they also battled Baylor in the first round last year’s Big Dance before falling by eight points. Again, I thought they might be the team that surprised everyone this year, but they had no luck in drawing Michigan in their home state. Also, Michigan was a first round upset victim against Ohio last year, so they certainly will not take the Jackrabbits Read more

NCAA Tournament Handicapping: Updated Market Power Ratings

03.21.2013     08:00 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Submitted by Stat Intelligence

I’ve made a few tweaks to the estimated Market Power Ratings we put together the other day based on sharp line movements since the openers. When we say “market,” we’re most interested in the combination of oddsmakers (openers) plus sharps (improving the openers), and not so much the public…whose money will hit the board Thursday and Friday now that tourists have arrived with their money, alumni baseball caps, and temporarily ecstatic optimism.

To give us all a sense of what the weekend lines might look like, I’ve also written up those projected numbers based on these current ratings. It gets goofy to write up every single possibility…and I don’t think anyone really cares right now what the line would probably be if Southern plays Wichita State. So, I’m penciling in wins for all seeds 1-4 just to make things easy. Obviously history says some of those teams will bite the dust. It won’t be hard to look up a good estimate if Read more

NCAA Tournament Betting Preview: No. 10 Cincinnati Bearcats vs. No. 7 Creighton Blue Jays

NCAA Tournament - Midwest Region
Friday, 11:45 am PT, Philadelphia, PA
No. 10 Cincinnati vs. No. 7 Creighton
CRIS Opener: Creighton -3 O/U 126
CRIS Current: Creighton -3.5 O/U 128
Recommendation: Cincinnati

Cincinnati's blueprint is pretty straight forward – when the Bearcats shoot the ball well, they are tough to beat. When they don't, the outcome often isn't favorable. And there are plenty of numbers to support that statement. When the Bearcats scored 60 points or more in regulation they were 20-1 SU. When they didn't, 2-10. But it needs to be noted who they were facing. The Bearcats faced seven teams (9 games) that rank in the top 25 in defensive efficiency. In those games, Cinci scored 43, 51, 55, 68, 52, 55, 70, 54, and 58. We know that there is some offensive potential with this squad. Go back to an early season tournament in Las Vegas and we saw the Bearcats net 78 vs. Iowa State and 77 vs. Oregon – two teams somewhat Read more

NCAA Tournament Betting Preview: No. 10 Colorado Buffaloes vs. No. 7 Illinois Fighting Illini

NCAA Tournament – East Region
Friday, 12:40 pm PT, Austin, Texas
No. 10 Colorado vs. No. 7 Illinois
CRIS Opener: Illinois -1 O/U 128.5
CRIS Current: Illinois -1.5 O/U 126.5
Recommendation: Colorado

It’s been a tale of two seasons for Illinois.  The Illini started the campaign a perfect 12-0, while climbing just short of a top 10 tanking.  Their perfect start to the season included solid wins against Gonzaga and Butler.  But their start doesn’t even tell half of the story, as the Illini finished the season winning just 10 of their next 22 games.  Since the calendar turned to 2013 Illinois simply hasn’t played NCAA Tournament caliber basketball.   To put things into perspective my final Big 10 power ratings featured Iowa five full points better than Illinois, while being rated equal to Purdue!  Obviously, with this type of rating, I’m looking to fade this squad from a value Read more

NCAA Tournament Betting Preview: No. 12 Akron Zips vs. No. 5 VCU Rams

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
NCAA Tournament - South Region
Thursday, 6:45 pm PT, Auburn Hills, Mich.
No. 12 Akron vs. No. 5 VCU
CRIS Opener: VCU -6.5 O/U 136
CRIS Current: VCU -7.5 O/U 134.5
Recommendation: Akron

Ohio U’s strong performance in a truly awful spot at Denver in the NIT on Tuesday Night helps make the case that Akron really is worth supporting in a matchup that looks very bad for the Zips at first glance.  Remember, the Bobcats lost to the Zips in all three meetings this year, including an embarrassing blowout loss in the second half of the MAC Championship game.   So, when Ohio U can hang around at a quality Denver squad for the full 40 minutes in a tough emotional and travel spot, it makes the Zips look that much better as they make the short trip to suburban Detroit to face their own tough test against VCU.

Everyone knows that Akron point guard Alex Abreu got kicked off the team after a very nasty looking drug bust just prior to Read more

NCAA Tournament Betting Preview: No. 12 Oregon Ducks vs. No. 5 Oklahoma State Cowboys

NCAA Tournament - Midwest Region
Thursday, 1:40 pm PT, at San Jose, Calif.
No. 12 Oregon vs. No. 5 Oklahoma State
CRIS Opener: Oklahoma State -3.5 O/U 135
CRIS Current: Oklahoma State -3 O/U 135
Recommendation: Oregon

The Oregon Ducks, like most NCAA Tournament teams, had their ups and downs this season but much of their struggles can be attributed to having to adjust to being without starting pointguard Dominic Artis. He suffered a foot injury against Washington State on January 23rd. Prior to that game, Oregon was 16-2 SU and 9-7 ATS. Following the Artis injury, Oregon went into a mini tailspin going 4-4 SU but only 1-7 ATS. Since Artis’s return against Oregon State on February 28th, Oregon has showed signs of getting back on track including a perfect 3-0 SU run in the PAC-12 Tournament.

Artis hasn’t scored more than six points in a game since his return and he was scoreless in 13 minutes of action in Read more
