College Basketball Betting Free Play: Gonzaga Bulldogs at BYU Cougars

Gonzaga at BYU -3 O/U 150.5
Recommendation: Over

"All offense, no defense" has been BYU’s mantra from much of the season. The Cougars are 7-3 O/U in their last 10 games. Thirteen of BYU's last 16 games have all reached 152 or more and I expect this one to do the same. Helping that trend is BYU’s defense which has allowed 78 ppg and 1.01 PPP. Gonzaga is not known to be a fast paced team (65 possessions per game) but still managed to score 84 points and shoot 57.4% from the floor in their previous meeting against the Cougars. BYU played a grinder of a game last time out against St. Mary’s in a rare low scoring 60-57 win, but at back at home, I expect a return to form.

Gonzaga’s offense has been dialed in of late against WCC foes (78.8 L4) – a product of everyone being healthy. The Zags have also been strong defensively but BYU is a different animal of its home court; 49.2% FGs, 1.16 PPP, and nearly 89 ppg. Tyler Haws, Kyle Collinsworth, Matt Carlino and Eric Mika all average double figures which gives them a wealth of balance. BYU still managed to hit 44.8% of their shots in Spokane but a dreadful Read more

College Basketball Handicapping: Michigan State with strong track record off of a loss

Michigan State -5 at Purdue O/U 140

For the last month, Michigan State has traded off wins and losses as it enters tonight's game at Purdue off a 60-51 home defeat vs. Nebraska. Over the last two regular seasons, the Spartans are 10-2 SU, 8-3 ATS (one game was not lined) off of a loss. MSU has also been a beast on the road, covering seven of its last eight contests. Keith Appling was expected to miss extended time but played 19 minutes against the Cornhuskers. He's reportedly good to go for tonight.

“I have five Big Ten games left in my final go-round as a Spartan,” he said, “and I plan on playing in all five of them.”

“You have to act like you have on

College Basketball Betting: BYU looks to snap losing skid vs. Gonzaga

Gonzaga at BYU -2 O/U 150.5

Gonzaga has had BYU's numbers with five straight wins (4-0-1 ATS) in the series. All five of those games also went under the total. The Cougars haven't lost a home game since dropping last year's late season meeting vs. the Zags, 70-65.

"We don’t have any pressure on us," Tyler Haws said, when asked about the Cougars’ mindset. "We are just going out there trying to win a basketball game. We love playing in front of our home crowd. I think our guys feed off the energy and we are a lot more comfortable at home. So I am not worried about it."

College Basketball Handicapping: Minnesota's defense on the upswing

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Illinois at Minnesota -7.5 O/U 129.5

Article on Minnesota's recent defensive improvements. Seasonally, the Gophers rank 10th in the Big Ten in points per possession allowed (1.06) but last time out they held Northwestern to 0.81 and also puts the clamps on Indiana (0.94). They'll still have issues with the better offenses in the Big Ten but against Illinois and Ohio State (Sat.), Minny is primed for more strong outputs.

“We’ve played much better defense,” Gophers coach Richard Pitino said. “The numbers may not indicate it as much, but … [on Sunday] that was the most fundamentally sound we’ve been all year.”

“Guys are coming together and realizing that if we want to win games, we’re going to have to defend,” he said.

College Basketball Betting: Arizona looks to get bench more minutes

Arizona -4.5 at Utah O/U 128.5

With Brandon Ashely out, Arizona's lack of depth has head coach Sean Miller concerned. It sounds as if Miller has no choice but to get his subs more minutes. In the Wildcats' overtime loss to Arizona State, the starters all played 45 minutes or more. According to KenPom, Arizona's bench ranks 300th nationally in terms of minutes used.

“We sort of talked about it … everyone on our team is ready to play those extra minutes,” center Kaleb Tarczewski said. “It’s something we have to do to win.”

“All of us as coaches and players, you take responsibility when you lose,” Miller said during his weekly news conference at McKale Center. “The last straw for me in terms of how we’re going to do things moving forward was the ASU game, because, with what we try to do and how we play, it makes no sense to play players close to 40 minutes.

College Basketball Betting Free Play: NC State Wolfpack at Clemson Tigers

NC State at Clemson -4 O/U 120
Recommendation: Under

Like Northwestern, Clemson has played a ridiculous amount of slow paced, low scoring games. In 12 ACC contests, the Tigers have topped 120 points only four times in regulation – two came against up-tempo Duke and North Carolina and another against Boston College (122) who sports one of the worst defenses in college basketball. Last time out, despite only 53 possessions, Clemson and Virginia hit 121. That final is some deceiving as both teams had 90 points with five minutes to go. NC State is a young squad that has a tendency to let its opponent dictate tempo. In games against Duke and North Carolina, there were possessions and points galore. But we've seen the Wolfpack play grinders as well: 56-55 vs. Miami, 56-55 vs. Syracuse, 76-45 vs. Virginia. Overall, both squads average less than a point per possession in conference play and with the pace Read more

College Basketball Betting: Texas Tech slows things down in up-tempo Big XII

Kansas -8 at Texas Tech

Tubby Smith has his Texas Tech squad playing some sneaky-good basketball of late with wins over both Oklahoma schools and pointspread covers in eight of its last ten. In a conference loaded with high scoring, up-tempo teams, Smith has wisely slowed down the pace of TTU's games. The Red Raiders average only 62 possessions per game in league play and as a result have cashed five straight unders.

“They’re a lot better,” KU coach Bill Self said. “Tubby’s done a fabulous job, he and his staff. They’re playing hard. They are on a roll right now. They are playing great. What they did in Norman (68-60 win), having them down 20 in the second half, was certainly impressive. We know how easily OU scores.”

“We’ve got to go out and be prepared to win the game,” KU sophomore Andrew White III said. “That team is tough. They’ve had some big wins this year. We need that win desperately. We’ll practice, prepare like we

College Basketball Handicapping: Oklahoma State limps into tonight's contest at Baylor

Oklahoma State at Baylor -4.5 O/U 143.5

Six straight losses and not much confidence as Oklahoma State heads to Baylor for a shot at redemption after to losing to the Bears (with Marcus Smart) in Stillwater two weeks ago. On the flipside you have a Baylor squad off of rare back-to-back wins; the last of which a miraculous overtime win vs. Kansas State thanks to a last second three in regulation by Brady Heslip.

“They’re down — this is as down of a locker room that I’ve seen,” said Oklahoma State coach Travis Ford after the loss to the Sooners. “We just need to keep our head up and understand there is a lot of basketball left to be played. It doesn’t get any easier out on the road.”

Villanova at Creighton -2.5 O/U 147
Recommendation: Creighton

Creighton has failed to cover the number in four consecutive games because it has been overpriced. However, in today's home game vs. Villanova, the price is right for a play on the Bluejays, who are 2.5-point home favorites vs. the Wildcats. Greg McDermott's team is undefeated in 13 home games this season with a 7-4 spread record. Creighton has been a single-digit home 'chalk' three times, posting a 2-1 ATS mark. When these teams met in Philadelphia on Jan. 20, it was all Creighton from the jump. The Bluejays put on a show, setting school and Big East records by draining 21-of-35 attempts from 3-point range. They led by 40 – that's right, 40! – with more than six minutes remaining. Ethan Wragge scored a career-high 27 points thanks to nine treys on 14 attempts. With eight 3-balls in the first 16 minutes and change, Wragge surpassed his previous career high of 22 points before halftime. Doug McDermott was steady as usual, producing 23 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the field. Austin Chatman dished out 10 assists, while Jahenns Manigat finished with 19 points. Ohio State -4.5 at Illinois O/U 124
Recommendation: Ohio State

Both of these Big Ten schools have had their share of problems this season. Ohio State was ranked in the top 10 before dropping five of six games in conference play. The Buckeyes managed to turns things around some by winning four of five before losing at home to Michigan last time out. Overall, OSU (6-6 Big Ten) does have nice road wins at Wisconsin and Iowa as well as home wins over Illinois and Purdue and are currently 6-6 in conference play.  Ohio State is +0.06 PPP in conference play; one of only five Big Ten teams with a positive efficiency rate. On the other hand, Illinois is just 3-9 in conference play and is -0.09 PPP. They have a home win over Indiana and two wins over Penn State but suffered an eight game losing streak in between wins over the Nittany Lions. They Illini are coming off another loss, 67-58, at Nebraska and have been plagued by an inability to generate offense. Read more
