College Basketball Betting Free Play: UL-Lafayette Ragin Cajuns at Georgia Bulldogs

UL-Lafayette at Georgia -9.5 O/U 152.5
Recommendation: Over

UL-Lafayette is one of the more talented mid-major teams in the country offensively led by the trio of Bryce Washington (15.3 ppg), Frank Bartley (19.1 ppg) and Jay Wright (14.5 ppg). And what I like best about the Ragin Cajuns is most of their point production comes from 2-pointers and the free throw line. When mid-major teams that rely heavily on the three-point shot go on the road to face power conference competition, the offense is vulnerable to struggles. Head coach Bob Marlin's attacking style is proven capable against a better class of opponents. Last season against Miami (FL), Alabama, and UCLA, ULL scored 77, 93, and 80 respectively. To open up 2016, they had difficulty knocking down shots at Minnesota but still posted 74 points thanks to a fast pace and 30 free throw attempts. From a totals perspective, Georgia has always been tough to figure under Mark Fox. Some games the Bulldogs will run up and down and score while others are low scoring fist fights. Earlier this season they faced UNC Asheville and Furman; two somewhat similar teams pace and ability wise. Against Asheville, UGA Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Missouri State Bears at Southeast Missouri Redhawks

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Missouri State -9 at Southeast Missouri O/U 144.5
Recommendation: Over

Southeast Missouri is your typical up-tempo, no defense low mid-major. The Redhawks appear a bit improved over last season's 5-24 disaster with three wins already over DI competition. Of 2015's 27 games against DI teams, on only seven occasions did SEMO net better than a point per possession. This season, they've done in four times and have a shot to do it again on their home floor this evening. Missouri State is another team that looks much improved on the offensive end. They hung 96 against Alabama A&M and 91 against Jacksonville State to kick off the season. Not exactly stiff competition but SEMO isn't either as the Redhawks rank near the bottom nationally in a number of defensive categories. The Bears saw more resistance in their last three games against DePaul, North Dakota State and Air Force but still averaged a respectable 67.7 ppg with all three games at 68 possessions or less. There's also an injury to be aware with Missouri State's Obediah Church unlikely to play due to an bum knee. He's a strong "under" player with limited offensive ability and a big Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Oregon State Beavers at Mississippi State Bulldogs

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Oregon State at Mississippi State -8 O/U 130.5
Recommendation: Under

Points could be at a premium tonight in Starkville as Oregon State and Mississippi State will each be without their top offensive weapons. Tres Tinkle is the only player on the Beavers with an offensive rating north of 100. He's out indefinitely with a wrist injury. Even with Tinkle on the floor, OSU's offense has been a mess with one of the nation's highest turnover rates (25.8%), lowest three-point percentages (26.4%), and less than a point per possession despite an ultra-soft schedule. Center Drew Eubanks now becomes Oregon State's top option as evident by the 21 shots he took in Monday's win over NAIA Southern Oregon. Two years ago, Oregon State was able to compete by slowing down the tempo and playing various zone defenses. I expect that head coach Wayne Tinkle will attempt to shorten games moving forward due to the lack of weapons and experience. Mississippi State played a bunch of high scoring affairs early on thanks to Quinndary Weatherspoon's 18.8 ppg. He's missed the last two games and the Bulldogs netted only 73 points on 74 possessions vs. Lehigh and 65 points on 66 Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Muray State Racers at Southern Illinois Salukis

Murray State at Southern Illinois -3 O/U 146.5
Recommendation: Over

Two years ago, Murray State boasted one of most efficient offenses in the country thanks to a host of veterans and point guard Cameron Payne who is currently in the NBA. The Racers played an up-tempo game and routinely produced 80+ points against comparable competition. Following the departure of the aforementioned talent and head coach Steve Prohm, Murray suffered through a rebuilding year where they finished 17-14. New head coach Matt McMahon was forced to adjust the team's philosophers, most notably a much slower offense. Through six games, it looks as if the Racers have returned to a faster brand of basketball as their offensive possessions are over two seconds faster compared to last season. It's resulted in a number of high scoring games: 143, 168, 170, 159, 155, and 145. Southern Illinois head coach Barry Hinson has been vocal about his guard-heavy team playing at a faster clip this season. The Salukis ran up and down against Wright State, Arkansas, and SIU Edwardsville but head into tonight have played back-to-back lower scoring games against Mount St. Mary's and Minnesota. College Basketball Betting Free Play: San Francisco Dons at UC Santa Barbara Gauchos

San Francisco at UC Santa Barbara -8.5 O/U 143
Recommendation: Under

San Francisco first-year head coach Kyle Smith, who came over from Columbia, vowed to shore up the Dons' defense and play a more control brand of basketball. That didn't exactly play out in their first game as a wave of early hot shooting led to a fast-paced 82-80 win over run-and-gun UIC. Far different opponent for USF tonight as its travels to UC Santa Barbara. Under longtime head coach Bob Williams, the Gauchos have consistently been one of the better defensive and slower teams in the Big West. In their first game, UCSB suffered a 74-60 loss to up-tempo Nebraska-Omaha. Netting only 60 points on your home floor in perhaps a bit alarming considering Omaha coughed up 80+ against USC and Kansas State. Last season, these two teams hooked up for a slow paced (62 possession) 68-61 game. That was with Rex Walters at the helm for USF; a coach whose teams generally play fast. And the total in that game closed 140.5. As mentioned, Smith's Columbia teams were among the slowest in the country. Some of that had to do with playing in the Ivy League but even in non-conference play, the Lions Read more

College Basketball Handicapping: Analyzing first-year coaching hires

11.08.2016     09:30 AM     Andrew Lange     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Andrew Lange

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The college basketball season gets underway on Friday. I've been hard at work trying to get a read on as many teams as possible. Last night involved a lot of "new coach" research as I poured over the ridiculously long list of first-year coaches. Below are my thoughts and opinions on some of the hirings.

Arkansas State
New Coach: Grant McCasland
Thoughts: McCasland has HC experience at JC and D2 and spent five years as an assistant at Baylor. Red Wolves were last seen in mail-it-in-mode under John Brady as they lost nine straight to close out last season.

Drexel
New Coach: Zach Spiker
Thoughts: It's a common theme across all sports: slow or even moderate tempo teams that try to play fast under new system/coach generally struggle. Dragons played it close to the vest under Bruiser and now ex-Army HC Spiker brings in up-tempo. To Spiker's credit, he said it's going to take time.

Pacific
New Coach: Damon Stoudamire
Thoughts: Unlike some other ex-pro hires, Stoudamire has paid his dues as an assistant. Curious to see whether or not he's got the Read more

NCAA Tournament Gambling Free Pick: Gonzaga Bulldogs vs. Utah Utes

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Gonzaga -2 vs. Utah O/U 139
Recommendation: Under

Both teams played it close to the vest in the first round as Gonzaga won a 68-52 grinder over Seton Hall and Utah did the same against Fresno State. The lone difference was the Zags avoided the dreaded late foul fest and went way under the total while the Utes traded baskets and free throws against a desperate Fresno squad that made a late rally. Keep in mind the Utah-Fresno game was 33-22 at half but both teams combined for 94 points after the break. Utah played zone against Fresno for most of the game while running the offense inside-out through center Jakob Poeltl. Those are two factors that will help towards the under. Gonzaga will try to do the same thing with center Domantas Sabonis who took a team-high 20 field attempts against Seton Hall. I'm projecting the game to be in the low 60's possession wise which gives us wiggle room to play under on the current total of 139.
