College Basketball Betting Free Play: Ole Miss Rebels at Alabama Crimson Tide

Ole Miss +2 at Alabama O/U 131.5
Recommendation: Ole Miss

Not trusting of Alabama in the role of a favorite even when you eliminate the issues of not being with starters Shannon Hale and Ricky Tarrant. Tarrant has been out from nearly a month but the recent loss of Hale suggests the Crimson Tide could have a real difficult time scoring the basketball. There's also the issue of Alabama's failures when asked to step up in class. Of their seven SEC wins, only one (Texas A&M back on Jan. 6) came against a high power rated opponent. Of late, it's been very formulaic: beat who your supposed to beat and lose against "better" competition. Ole Miss enters off back-to-back losses and is in desperate need a good performance. The Rebels have proven capable on the highway with five SEC wins away from Oxford including at Arkansas and Florida. In the end, there isn't a huge difference between these two squads despite Alabama not being all that visually appealing. But with injury concerns and asked to lay points, I see Ole Miss as the right side tonight.

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Mississippi State Gamecocks at South Carolina Gamecocks

Mississippi State +9 at South Carolina O/U 122.5
Recommendation: Mississippi State

Not sure why South Carolina is laying this many points against a very comparable opponent. The Gamecocks have been in when's-the-offseason mode for much of the last month. They scored an unimpressive five-point win over Missouri and beat a Georgia squad that was without its starting point guard. Unlike Mississippi State, there were expectations placed on Frank Martin's group after a 9-3 non-conference mark. But nothing has gone right as the Gamecocks can't shoot, they don't always play with effort, and Martin's perpetual foul mood has clearly worn on the players. The one thing I know I'm going to get with Rick Ray's squad is effort. Since getting blown out in its first two SEC games, Mississippi State has been outclassed only twice: at Arkansas and vs. Kentucky -- both of which perfectly understandable. The rest of their games were five wins and losses by 4, 6, 6, 4, 6, and 4. This line is based on a power rating from two months ago. South Carolina hit as high as 25th in Ken Pom and has dropped to only 70th. Mississippi State bottomed out at 245th and had slowly Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Texas Longhorns at West Virginia Mountaineers

Texas +4.5 at West Virginia O/U 136.5
Recommendation: Texas

Going to step in play Texas at +4.5 (a few +5's available) as it heads to West Virginia this evening. Some bettors will undoubtedly point toward the revenge angle (UT won 77-50 in Austin) and the Longhorns' spotty play of late (back-to-back losses). But at the current price there is some value on the underdog as WVU enters off back-to-back upsets and doesn't match up particularly well against UT's front court. While Texas has plenty of weakness -- most notably a lack of consistency -- they do defend well in the paint. In their last two losses, Oklahoma and Iowa State shot a combined 28-of-77, 36.3% from two. What did them in what allowing 20 three-pointers. But unlike the Sooners and Cyclones, the Mountaineers don't have much of any outside shooting prowess. On the season, they've connected on only 30.9% of their three-point attempts. Another angle to consider is WVU's element of surprise, or lack thereof in this spot. In five "second meets" in Big XII pay, the Mountaineers have covered only once; against bottom feeder Texas Tech. Teams clearly know what to expect and while Texas Read more

West Virginia at Oklahoma State -4 O/U 134.5
Recommendation: Under

Oklahoma State has been really consistent when it comes to pace this season regardless of opponent. In their last two games, against TCU and Iowa State,  there were 124 and 126 possessions respectively. That's very important when we consider how different both those squads are on the offensive end. When the Cowboys faced Big XII squads that play up-tempo (Iowa State, Kansas, Oklahoma) five of those six games went under the total. Those totals ranged from the mid-130’s to mid-140’s. No matter what the opposition, it’s hard to reach that mark when you prefer a slow pace, fail to average over a point per possession, and grade out as above average defensively. Statistically, West Virginia is the fastest team in the Big XII because they press and their games often feature an endless amount of free throws. But this is a different team on the road as three of their last four road games failed to top 130 (127, 124, 123, and 138 against Iowa State). Very important game for both sides, particularly Oklahoma State who desperately needs a victory after back-to-back losses. Read more

Arizona State -2 at Washington O/U 145.5
Recommendation: Over

Since the departure of Robert Upshaw we've seen Washington take on a completely different identity. The Huskies have been forced to play as many as four guards and an undersized forward and their defense has suffered as a result. Eliminated their game against offensively inept Oregon State and without Upshaw, Washington has allowed 1.20 points per possession in every game. In those four games, teams averaged 84.5 ppg. You also have to question where this team is at mentally after suffering back-to-back blowout losses. Arizona State has been up and down for much of the season but has shown much more ability to score after failing to crack 60 in its first four PAC-12 contests. Over their last seven games, the Sun Devils have averaged 74.1 ppg with a number of those games played at a fast tempo. Both teams aren't even close to being in the postseason discussion and with this being their second game in three days, I don't project much in the way of defensive intensity. Play it over.

West Virginia at Iowa State -7 O/U 158.5
Recommendation: Under

They'll no doubt be a lot of pace and points in this afternoon's West Virginia-Iowa State game but oddsmakers aren't messing around by opening this game 160. It's since been bet down slightly to 158.5 but I see a few factors that make playing the under worth a bet. For starters, Iowa State talked all week about shoring up its leaky defense. That doesn't mean they're going to start holding teams in the 60's as their games are way too fast for that. But at home off of allowing 94 points to Oklahoma, I expect a much better effort. Next, West Virginia doesn't have a very efficient offense. In fact, the Mountaineers are averaging less than a point per possession in Big XII play. And it's important to note that not one WVU Big XII game has topped 158 in regulation. In the first meeting between these two squads there was a fair amount of pace (144 possession) and points 146 but it went under the closing total of 150. Neither team has changed much of all since that game back in mid-January and yet today's total is eight points higher. In order for this game to go over the total you'll need close Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Tennessee Volunteers at Vanderbilt Commodores

Tennessee +6 at Vanderbilt O/U 126.5
Recommendation: Tennessee

Recent results suggest that Tennessee and Vanderbilt are headed in opposite directions but the reality is these two teams have played a lot of close, competitive basketball where the straight up results appear to be more random than anything. The Commodores enter off back-to-back wins, including a blowout over a wounded South Carolina squad. The Vols meanwhile have lost four of five but those defeats came by margins of 6, 5, 5, and 3. I'd be concerned if this team was getting outplayed but the level of effort is still there night in and night out, they just happen to come out on the losing end. Make no mistake, this team has flaws, particularly on offense but the current price indicates that Vandy is the better of the two squads which I'm not sure is the case. Consider this: Vanderbilt was laying -3 vs. South Carolina this past weekend and now -6 vs. Tennessee. The Gamecocks are for whatever reason still "respected" due to non-conference wins over Oklahoma State and Iowa State. Tennessee is void of any marquee wins but unlike USC, the Vols show up each and every night and have a Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Xavier Musketeers at Marquette Golden Eagles

Xavier -3 at Marquette O/U 137
Recommendation: Under

Xavier has been one of the tougher teams in the country to handicap from a totals perspective. The pace of their games is typically fairly quick but their offense and defense comes and goes on a weekly basis. Tonight, they head to Marquette for a critical game as the Musketeers sit 15-9 and 6-6 in Big East play. The Golden Eagles meanwhile continue to fight despite being short on depth and talent. They've lost five Big East games that came down to the final two minutes of play. Veteran guard Matt Carlino missed Marquette's last game and while they managed to win at Seton Hall, the team shot 1-of-10 from three and netted only 57 points. Carlino (concussion) is questionable tonight and if he is ruled out, expect the market to knock this total down a point or two. But even if he does suit up, Marquette is far more comfortable grinding out games and trying to keep things close. They simply can't match Xavier from an offensive perspective if this game is played in transition. I think the first meeting is very indicative of what we'll see tonight: 124 possessions and 120 points -- and that was Read more
