College Basketball Betting Free Play: Missouri Tigers at South Carolina Gamecocks

Missouri at South Carolina -2 O/U 140
Recommendation: Under

Missouri's Cuonzo Martin and South Carolina's Frank Martin have long been coaches you can play under the total given the right circumstances. I see tonight as an opportunity with the Tigers opening SEC play and the Gamecocks off a 74-69 road loss to Ole Miss. During non-conference play, Mizzou at times showed capable on the offensive end while also willing to get up and down the floor. But against comparable competition, their scores and pace were far more moderate. Games against Iowa State, Utah, UCF, and Illinois yielded 133, 136, 121, and 134 points. They did however get caught up in a few high scoring affairs against St. John's (90-82) and West Virginia (83-79) as well as recent home contests vs. a few up-tempo mid-major squads. Interestingly, Martin's Cal team from a year ago played in only four PAC-12 games that closed higher than 140 and those were against Arizona State, UCLA, and Washington; three teams that played with tremendous pace and didn’t defend. It's pointless to use South Carolina's results from a season ago considering all of the experience and Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Georgetown Hoyas at DePaul Blue Demons

Georgetown at DePaul -4 O/U 145.5
Recommendation: Over

DePaul has played a daunting schedule thus far including back-to-back games against the Big East's top two teams, Villanova and Xavier. Once again, head coach Dave Leitao has failed to assemble a roster talented enough to compete on a nightly basis. Two of the Blue Demons' more effective offensive players, Max Strus and Marin Maric, are mid-major transfers. Veterans Eli Cain and Tre’Darius McCallum would be role players nearly every other team in the league. And freshman point guard Justin Roberts has a bright future but will undoubtedly struggle against better competition. Georgetown has drawn a lot of attention for its super-soft non-conference schedule but there are perhaps signs of potential. The Hoyas lost to Syracuse and Butler in overtime and lost by nine at Marquette this past weekend. Turnovers, not scoring, were the main problem with 62 miscues in those three games. What's noticeable with both squads is the uptick in tempo. With methodical point guard Billy Garrett gone, the Blue Demons have shown far more willingness to play with pace. And first-year head coach Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Morehead State Eagles at Butler Bulldogs

Morehead State at Butler -22 O/U 140
Recommendation: Over

Heading into the season, Butler first-year head coach LaVall Jordan had talked about wanting to play a more up-tempo brand of basketball. Last year, under Chris Holtmann, the Bulldogs played in only seven games that featured 70 possessions or more. Under Jordan, they've matched that mark through only 11 games. In watching Butler play, scoring isn't going to come easy in Big East play. But the Bulldogs have proven capable against lesser competition. In games against teams outside Ken Pom's top 100, Butler has averaged 81.6 ppg. The game scores of those six contests were 162, 146, 147, 160, 140, and 120. The chance for points continues tonight with Morehead State in town. The Eagles haven't shown much of an ability to stop the opposition. Xavier scored 101 points on 72 possessions and Virginia Tech netted 96 on 77. They currently rank first nationally in defensive time of possession meaning opposing teams don't need to work much to get a clean look. The concern is whether or not Morehead can get to 60 points. Against Xavier and Northern Kentucky, they failed to top 50. Butler's Read more

Mississippi State at Cincinnati -11.5 O/U 138
Recommendation: Under

There are only a handful of coaches in the country that you can confidently rely on to have their team ready on the defensive end after a bad performance. Cincinnati's Mick Cronin certainly qualifies. Two weeks ago, the Bearcats were punched in the mouth by rival Xavier, 89-76. They fired back by holding Florida to only 66 but lost the game thanks to 21 turnovers. Off back-to-back losses, bettors can expect a focused effort against Mississippi State tonight. The Bulldogs (8-0) are one of only a few undefeated teams remaining due in large part to an ultra-soft schedule. When asked to step up in class, MSU barely slipped past Jacksonville State (59-56) and Dayton (61-59) in Starkville. You'll notice that in both contests, the Bulldogs struggled to score which suggests points could be at a premium tonight. I used Florida as an example the other day as a defensive-minded team that fell in love with simply outscoring weaker foes. Cincinnati has had a similar experience after hanging 107, 102, and 97 its first three games. But the Bearcats are notorious slowing down the Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Loyola-Chicago Ramblers at Florida Gators

Loyola-Chicago at Florida -16.5 O/U 151
Recommendation: Under

After running up and down the floor and hanging 100+ three out of its four games, Florida finds itself losers of two straight. The main culprit was defense as Duke and Florida State netted 1.13 and 1.12 points per possession, respectively. And despite winning, Florida's two opponents prior to that, Stanford and Gonzaga, also posted 1.1 ppp or more. Not having John Egbunu patrolling the paint hurts, but he missed time last year and the Gators still finished fifth in the country in defensive efficiency. The bottom line is Florida fell in love with trying to outscore foes and head coach Mike White was quick to call them on it.

“You guys have heard me use the word soft with this team,” White said late Monday night. “And we use the word with our team every day and it reared its ugly head tonight. Tonight was the epitome of soft.”

Ironically, nearly the exact same thing occurred last season when the Gators dropped two straight to both Duke and Florida State. The key however was they were able to fire back in a big way the next Read more
