NCAA Tournament Gambling: Bettors fade early start for San Diego State

03.16.2012     06:54 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
NC State -3 vs. San Diego State O/U 137.5

This time of year, it isn't hard for teams to get motivated but San Diego State's Tim Shelton is using the pointspread as a pick-me-up for today's early start contest against NC State. The game opened a pick 'em but has now climbed to as high as -3 in favor of the Wolfpack. The move is in large part a fade on the west-to-east travel and early start (9:40 am PT) – especially after Colorado State wore down in the second half against Murray State.

"Little things like that do motivate us," he said. "But look at the odds for our team before the season and we weren't supposed to be here in the first place."

NCAA Tournament Gambling Preview: Long Beach State vs. New Mexico

Long Beach State vs. New Mexico -4 O/U 138.5
Recommendation: New Mexico

I’ll side here with the red hot ascending Lobos who are now 12-2 straight up and 11-3 against the spread in their last 14 games. All 12 of those SU wins were by five points or more and by an average of 18.3 points per game so don’t mind laying the asking price here. Matchups are favorable for New Mexico in this one as PF Drew Gordon figures to have his way down low with the LBSU bigs T.J. Robinson and Eugene Phelps. Neither is used to seeing the physical likes of Gordon on the low blocks and it was problematic the last time the 49ers saw a player like this when Kansas’ Thomas Robinson went for 26 points on 10-14 shooting. The subtraction of a 100% healthy 6’5” swingman Larry Anderson (Big West Defensive Player) truly hurts Long Beach and HC Dan Monson made mention of how limited they now are in a multitude of areas earlier this week. NCAA Gambling Preview: BYU Cougars vs. Marquette Golden Eagles

BYU vs. Marquette -5 O/U 153.5
Recommendation: Marquette

It was a great comeback win for BYU in its play-in game against Iona but plenty of red flags suggest this team simply isn’t ready for the step up in class they’ll face in this matchup. For the Cougars, their Cinderella story ends today.

BYU repeatedly failed when stepping up against quality opponents in 2011-12. They were blown out by the two best teams in the WCC every time they traveled; the Cougars suffered a 19-point loss to Gonzaga in the conference tournament, an 11-point loss to the Zags away and a 16-point loss to St. Mary’s away. Their one big step up away from home against a “power conference” school? A 17-point loss to Wisconsin.

We should note that’s the same Wisconsin team that got beat down by Marquette in Madison earlier this year. The Golden Eagles will have the two best players on the court in Jae Crowder and Darius Johnson-Odom. Read more

So Mississippi vs. Kansas State -4.5 O/U 134

Another significant line move has seen Southern Miss drop from a 7-point underdog to +4.5 against Kansas State. The Golden Eagles have made a habit of playing close games over the last month with margins of 4, 8 (OT), 2, 8 (OT), 2, 7, 4, 2 (OT), and 11. Line history courtesy of CRIS.

Loyola Maryland vs. Ohio State -17 O/U 130.5
Recommendation: Ohio State

Let’s tip off our Thursday evening with a blowout winner in NCAA Tournament action.  Loyola Maryland (24-8) went on a 3-0 SU/ATS run to capture the MAAC Tournament title and advance to the Big Dance. The Greyhounds are fairly methodical on offense and don’t have the talent or athletic ability to keep up with the Buckeyes. Ohio State (27-7) can excel in open court and half court sets, and statistically they are solid across the board. OSU tied for the top spot in the Big Ten in field goal shooting (47%) while holding opponents to just 41%. Ohio State is one of the top rebounding teams in the country thanks to super soph Jared Sullinger – a player that Loyola can’t handle in the middle. Sullinger and Deshawn Thomas both shoot over 53%, and with Aaron Craft at the point, their balance and strength can beat anyone. When asked to win by margin, Ohio State Read more

NCAA Tournament Betting: Four position matchups you need to know

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The NCAA Tournament always brings a lot of unknown teams, players and matchups into its 68 (now 66) team field. It’s a heavy chore to follow and be aware of each team’s style and personnel beyond the surface statistical numbers. Here are five matchups that I feel are very important in Round One:

1.  Belmont vs. Georgetown – Belmont has a strength that is almost non-existent in this tournament field. They often play a pair of excellent point guards at the same time. Senior Drew Hanlen (team leading 2.2 assist-turnover ratio) and junior Kerron Johnson (team leading 5.2 assists per game) are different in their styles but very effective at directing the offense. Each is proficient at running the fast break but in the half court, Hanlen is a perimeter based point who leads the team in three point shooting percentage while Johnson is a lightning quick penetrator who excels in the drive and dish game. Johnson won the Alabama high school Mr. Basketball award three years ago, defeating Kentucky one and done stars C DeMarcus Cousins and G Eric Bledsoe. The Bruins ability to go with a pair of experienced and talented PG’s could be Read more

NCAA Tournament Betting Notes: Murray State steamed up to a 4.5-point favorite

03.14.2012     08:25 AM     Printer Friendly
Colorado State vs. Murray State -4.5 O/U 135

One of the more significant line moves of the NCAA Tournament with Murray State bet from a 1.5-point favorite to -4.5 at some locations. We imagine that some of the move had to do with Colorado State (Mountain Time Zone) playing an early start game (12:15 pm ET) in Louisville, Ky.

NIT Gambling Free Pick: Minnesota Golden Gophers at La Salle Explorers

Minnesota at La Salle -3 O/U 137.5
Recommendation: Over

A common thought process with these non-NCAA postseason tournaments is to lean OVER the total, and that is certainly what I see here. When you only have a day or two to prepare for your opponent and have limited tapes of their games, there is just no way that you are going to be ready for what they run on offense. That is a stark contrast to league games, where the coaches run the same stuff year after year and by the end of the season when a point guard calls a play, the defense knows what’s coming. Throw in the fact that it is hard for teams to play with the same intensity on the defensive end against an unknown opponent and it is easy to see why these games are usually higher scoring. In this matchup we have a team, La Salle, that tries to run all the time against a team that has shown they are willing to run against faster opponents, Minnesota. I definitely think that both teams will be Read more
