NCAA Tournament Betting Preview: No. 12 Akron Zips vs. No. 5 VCU Rams

NCAA Tournament - South Region
Thursday, 6:45 pm PT, Auburn Hills, Mich.
No. 12 Akron vs. No. 5 VCU
CRIS Opener: VCU -6.5 O/U 136
CRIS Current: VCU -7.5 O/U 134.5
Recommendation: Akron

Ohio U’s strong performance in a truly awful spot at Denver in the NIT on Tuesday Night helps make the case that Akron really is worth supporting in a matchup that looks very bad for the Zips at first glance.  Remember, the Bobcats lost to the Zips in all three meetings this year, including an embarrassing blowout loss in the second half of the MAC Championship game.   So, when Ohio U can hang around at a quality Denver squad for the full 40 minutes in a tough emotional and travel spot, it makes the Zips look that much better as they make the short trip to suburban Detroit to face their own tough test against VCU.

Everyone knows that Akron point guard Alex Abreu got kicked off the team after a very nasty looking drug bust just prior to Read more

NCAA Tournament Betting Preview: No. 12 Oregon Ducks vs. No. 5 Oklahoma State Cowboys

No. 12 Oregon vs. No. 5 Oklahoma State
CRIS Opener: Oklahoma State -3.5 O/U 135
CRIS Current: Oklahoma State -3 O/U 135
Recommendation: Oregon

The Oregon Ducks, like most NCAA Tournament teams, had their ups and downs this season but much of their struggles can be attributed to having to adjust to being without starting pointguard Dominic Artis. He suffered a foot injury against Washington State on January 23rd. Prior to that game, Oregon was 16-2 SU and 9-7 ATS. Following the Artis injury, Oregon went into a mini tailspin going 4-4 SU but only 1-7 ATS. Since Artis’s return against Oregon State on February 28th, Oregon has showed signs of getting back on track including a perfect 3-0 SU run in the PAC-12 Tournament.

Artis hasn’t scored more than six points in a game since his return and he was scoreless in 13 minutes of action in Read more

College Basketball Betting: Bradley switches to on-campus gym for CIT

Wisc-Green Bay at Bradley pk O/U 136.5

Bradley has decided to play tonight's first round CIT game on-campus at the Renaissance Coliseum rather than Carver Arena. The Braves played a few early season games at Renaissance and according to various players, the smaller venue is more shooter friendly

“A lot of shooting is physical, but a lot of it is mental, too,” Bradley coach Geno Ford said. “Our guys like the shooting background at Renaissance (Coliseum).”

“I like it in here,” he said at the end of practice Tuesday. “But it’s like any other shooting background. You just have to make the shot.

“It’s more closed in, more packed in than Carver. But the floor is the same size as Carver, the distances are

NCAA Tournament Gambling Odds: Duke and South Dakota State top first round consensus

03.20.2013     06:09 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Here are the top consensus bets for the NCAA Tournament according to Bookmaker. Note that the percentages represent the number of bets (not total handle) placed on each given wager. We can't help but notice the reactionary nature of some of the side selections. The world has officially been introduced to South Dakota State's Nate Wolters whereas Michigan is everyone’s favorite pick for “peaked too soon.” New Mexico is fresh off its Mountain West title – conveniently shown on CBS. And perhaps the most obvious knee-jerk reaction is the fade on Syracuse who suffered one of the biggest meltdowns of the season in the second half of the Big East title game against Louisville.

NCAA Tournament Betting Preview: No. 12 California Golden Bears vs. No. 5 UNLV Rebels

NCAA Tournament - Midwest Region
Thursday, 4:25 pm PT, at San Jose, Calif.
No. 12 California vs. No. 5 UNLV
CRIS Opener: UNLV -2.5 O.U 132
CRIS Current: UNLV -2.5 O/U 131
Recommendation: California

There are a couple oddities surrounding this game that I certainly wouldn’t expect to see very often in the “second” round of the NCAA Tournament. Firstly this is a non-conference rematch of a regular season game between these two squads and secondly it’s a virtual home game for a No. 12 seed. In yet another strange twist Cal was originally drawn as a No. 11 seed only to be moved down due to logistical reasons according to the selection committee! The Golden Bears were defeated at home in the first meeting on a last second tip-in by UNLV; this despite the fact that the Rebels had lost their best player at the time – Mike Moser – to a dislocated elbow. Is revenge in the air or can UNLV muster that same strength Read more

College Basketball Gambling Free Pick: Northeastern Huskies at Alabama Crimson Tide

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Northeastern +11 at Alabama O/U 129
Recommendation: Northeastern

Alabama has won ten straight at home dating back to the beginning of January, but the Crimson Tide have not been particularly adept at winning by pointspread covering margins.  The results don’t lie.  Alabama is just 1-7 ATS in their last eight tries as home chalk, and only one of their last nine wins at home came by more than ten points – a revenge matchup against lowly Auburn.  Plain and simple – the Tide are not a team that runs up margins, making them a poor double digit favorite tonight.

To make matters worse for Alabama, they’re playing without senior guard Andrew Steele again, out with an ankle injury that is expected to end his season, even if the Crimson Tide advance.  When Steele missed the entire month of December, Alabama lost three times at home to lesser teams – Dayton, Mercer and Tulane – as big favorites every Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks at Stanford Cardinal

Stephen F. Austin +8.5 at Stanford O/U 126.5
Recommendation: Stephen F. Austin

I'm a little surprised Stanford decided to give head coach Johnny Dawkins another year but as a bettor I won't complain because under Dawkins this team has been a consistent underachiever. As for the NIT, I have my concerns about the Cardinal and their motivation considering they won the event last season. And they get a first round opponent that they simply can't just show up and beat. Stephen F. Austin is a quality mid-major with wins at Tulsa, Oklahoma and Long Beach State. The Lumberjacks also lost at Texas A&M by eight points. They play at a slow place and thrive on the defensive end of the floor (42.1% eFG, 29.0% 3-point, 88.2 ppp allowed). SFA's stout three-point defense is particularly noteworthy considering Stanford shot 41.1% in PAC-12 play which accounted for 32% of its points. Look for the underdog to stick around in this one.

NCAA Tournament Handicapping: Stat Profiles for St. Mary's/MTSU and Boise State/La Salle

03.19.2013     06:45 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Submitted by Stat Intelligence

I’m going to skip the two play-in games on the #16 seed rung because those teams are so obscure…and basically irrelevant for the week. Here are some notes on the other two play in games. St. Mary’s vs. Middle Tennessee will be played Tuesday night in Dayton, Boise State/LaSalle on Wednesday night.

Hybrid Estimates

St. Mary’s: +12.8 average margin in Big West, which has a Sagarin conference rating of 75.31

Middle Tennessee: +16.5 average margin in the Sun Belt, which has a Sagarin conference rating of 69.51

Middle Tennessee is +3.7 on the raw total, but St. Mary’s played in a conference that was +5.8 points better. So, that’s St. Mary’s by 2.1 points. The Vegas line as I write this is St. Mary’s. Pretty close there.

Boise State: +1.1 average margin in the Mountain West, which has a Sagarin rating of 80.71

LaSalle: +5.5 average margin in the Atlantic 10, which has a Sagarin rating of Read more
