College Basketball Betting Recap: Indiana wins Big Ten, Middle Tennessee shocked again

03.11.2013     07:20 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Submitted by Stat Intelligence

Let’s run the numbers from the three most talked about results of the day…

Indiana 72, Michigan 71

2-Point Percentage: Indiana 43%, Michigan 40%

3-Point Shooting: Indiana 7/16, Michigan 10/22

Free Throws: Indiana 5/9, Michigan 7/13

1’s and 2’s: Indiana 51, Michigan 41

Rebounds: Indiana 47, Michigan 26

Turnovers: Indiana 14, Michigan 6

(Indiana 2-2 in Kenpom, Sagarin; Michigan 11-9)

Indiana got the best of it in most of the numbers…so karma rewarded their performance with some good fortune at the end. Michigan just missed a layup and a tip-in in the final seconds that would have won the game. But…

*Michigan had to shoot 45% on treys just to be in the game, which is not something that should be counted on.

*Michigan missed the front end of two late one-and-one’s when they could have been sealing a trey-based victory

*Michigan was killed on the Read more

Teddy Covers' Who Has What It Takes to Win the NCAA Tournament in 2013 Part II

Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
In Part I of this article last week, I took a basic look at the profile of the past 15 NCAA champions. From that profile, I was able to make a ‘short list’ of potential champs in 2013, consisting of the following 15 teams: Florida, Arizona, Indiana, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Georgetown, Louisville, Marquette, Syracuse, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma State, Miami-FL and Duke.

However, since last week, one of those 15 teams has been bounced from consideration.  Syracuse’s late season meltdown – four losses in their last five ballgames – has left them above the seven loss cut-off line.

I’d still call the Orange a ‘live’ longshot – let’s not forget that fellow Big East member UConn in 2011 also lost four of their last five regular season games before reeling off 11 consecutive wins in the Big East and Big Dance tournaments to win the title.  Then again, that 2011 UConn team is clearly the ‘exception to the Read more

MAC Tournament Betting Preview

MAC Tournament Preview

As a result of Toledo's postseason ineligibility, this year's MAC Tournament format is pretty wild. Seeds 6-11 play at campus sites on Monday. The fifth seed, Ball State, received a bye into the second round. No. 4 Kent State and No. 3 Western Michigan received byes in the third round. And then top seeds, No. 1 Akron and No. 2 Ohio won't play until Friday in the semifinals. The big storyline of the tournament is the suspension of Akron point guard Alex Abreu. Heading into March, the Zips were off their second win over Ohio and in the at-large discussion with a stellar record of 23-4 and 13-0 in league play. Akron then lost at Buffalo, Abreu was busted for weed, and they suffered a devastating loss to Kent State at home in the regular season finale. The Zips are talented enough to overcome the loss of their star point guard and win two games but without him, they are far more vulnerable.

First Round Pick: Egads! Conference tournaments are a tough nut to crack and seemingly produce more random outcomes than any other situation in college basketball (If you have time, Google “Liberty” and Read more

NCAA Basketball Betting Recap: Duke Destroys North Carolina, Baylor and Louisville also win

03.10.2013     07:41 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Submitted by Stat Intelligence

Hey, Coach K figured out a way to keep opposing fans from storming the court…

Duke grabbed this game by the throat…jumping ahead 14-0 right out of the gate, and confirmed their superiority throughout the night. Some of that was certainly North Carolina hurrying shots…and making poor choices on offense early when the game was getting out of hand. But, Duke was creating that panic. It’s not like they were just standing idly by.

The numbers tell the story pretty well, so let’s jump right into those…

#3 Duke 69, North Carolina 53

2-Point Percentage: Duke 65%, North Carolina 42%

3-Point Shooting: Duke 5/15, North Carolina 1/14

Free Throws: Duke 10/12, North Carolina 10/13

1’s and 2’s: Duke 54, North Carolina 50

Rebounds: Duke 31, North Carolina 27 (16 offensive)

Turnovers: Duke 14, North Carolina 11

College Basketball Betting News and Notes 3-9-2013

03.09.2013     08:21 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
A few links for this weekend’s college basketball action. The theme with most of these is the dreaded MUST WIN SITUATION!

Boise State is reportedly in a must win situation vs. San Diego State. The Aztecs won the first meeting 63-62.

A lot of games Maryland plays these days are considered must win – especially Wednesday's matchup vs. North Carolina in which Terps’ guards P'Shon Howard, Logan Aronhalt, Seth Allen combined to shoot 2-of-19 from the floor. On to Virginia, boys!

Things didn't work out well for Kentucky's must win game at Georgia. That means today's matchup against Florida is even more must win!

Nebraska's Tim Miles is calling today's game at Iowa Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Pick: Marshall Thundering Herd and East Carolina Pirates

Marshall at East Carolina -6.5
Recommendation: East Carolina

Marshall is not a team that knows how to handle prosperity or be consistent. In the five previous instances in which the Herd was off a conference win, they lost and failed to cover. This past Tuesday was Marshall’s Super Bowl. They had lost to Southern Miss 102-46 earlier in the season and had the rematch circled for over a month. They came up big and beat USM 88-84. Heading into their regular season finale there is little to nothing to play for – and as noted, even when there is something to play for, Marshall doesn't always show up. A slew of things need to happen in order for them to move up the standings and even if that occurs (very unlikely) it still doesn't change the fact that they will need to win a bunch of games to get to the Big Dance. East Carolina already has the No. 4 seed locked up so on the surface it doesn't look like the Pirates have much to play for either. But Read more

Colonial Conference Tournament Betting Preview

Colonial Conference Tournament Preview

What a year for the Colonial! Perennial heavyweight VCU bolted for the A-10. Old Dominion, who won back-to-back tournament titles in 2010 and 2011 and reached the semifinals last year, went 5-25 and fired its coach midseason. Preseason favorite George Mason finished fifth. Towson went from 1-31 to 18-13 but can't play in the postseason due to poor grades. UNC-Wilmington is also ineligible. Georgia State is leaving for the Sun Belt so wasn't invited. As a result of those three teams being out, Hofstra (7-23, 4-13) got in. And Northeastern won the regular season title despite being one of the luckiest teams on the planet for a month-long stretch. With the exception of George Mason (2008) and James Madison (1994), the remainder of the field has exactly zero Colonial Conference tournament titles.

First Round Pick: Delaware played a tough non-conference schedule, battling with the likes of Villanova, Duke, Temple, Pitt, Virginia, and Kansas State. They acquitted themselves fairly well in those games and opened conference play 3-0 SU, 3-0 ATS. Unfortunately, it was the kiss of the death. The Blue Read more

College Basketball Gambling: Bettors respond to Akron suspension

03.08.2013     07:24 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
By now you've probably heard that Akron's point guard, Alex Abreu, was busted for having a ton of pot and as a result suspended indefinitely. The Zips have the MAC's No. 1 seed locked up but close out the regular season tonight against rival Kent State. According to some projections, Akron could reach the NCAA Tournament via an at-large berth but can ill-afford to lose to a lesser opponent like Kent State at home. So tonight's game does have some importance.

We'll also point a recent example of a team “rising up” the first game following a key suspension. St. John's lost leading scorer D'Angelo Harrison and the next time out went on the road and covered against Providence. The game after that – blowout loss at Notre Dame – is when the Red Storm fell flat.  Early bettors haven’t taken that approach with Akron bet down from an opener of -10 to -8.5.
