NCAA Tournament Betting: Duke faces Michigan State in Sweet Sixteen

Michigan State vs. Duke -2 O/U 134

An out of conference rivalry will be renewed Friday night as Duke and head coach Mike Krzyzewski challenge Michigan State and Tom Izzo.  Much will be made about Izzo’s 1-6 record against Coach K but I view that “trend” as mostly meaningless in this particular matchup.  Last weekend’s efforts were much more impressive for Duke than Michigan State.  Despite foul trouble, the Blue Devils took care of business by cruising past Creighton, 66-50.  Creighton was one of the more impressive teams in the tournament – extremely well-coached and prepared – so I give Duke credit for holding the Blue Jays to 50 points.

Meanwhile, the Spartans roughing up Memphis in their backyard was hard to take seriously.  Memphis once again played scatterbrained basketball and head coach in Josh Pastner was up against it to put it kindly.  Of course, the referees let Read more

La Salle vs. Wichita State -4 O/U 135.5

Wichita State and La Salle battle in the Sweet Sixteen at the Staples Center in LA on Thursday Night.  It’s the only matchup that features a pair of mid-major schools AND the only matchup between a pair of teams seeded No. 9 or higher; each squad pulling off multiple upsets to get here.  Currently, Wichita is -4 with a total of 135.5

This link from offers a behind the scenes look at the Explorers’ daily preparation schedule during tournament time for head coach John Giannini and his staff.  It’s in interesting read for any college basketball fan; not a typical local sports story.  Giannini’s main point?  “This is uncharted water for us.”

Michigan vs. Kansas -2 O/U 136

Each of these teams enters the Sweet Sixteen after getting through their first two games utilizing very different strengths. For Michigan, it has been all about the offense in a pair of 15-point routs. They are one of only three teams in the remaining field that shot better than 50% from the field in both of their games (Arizona and Louisville the other two). The Wolverines have been very balanced with three double-digit scorers in their opener against South Dakota State and four against VCU – all of those point totals falling between 13 and 21. The real surprise for UM has been the huge contribution on the inside by 6-10 freshman Mitch McGarry. His constant hustle and bull mentality around the rim helped him net 34 points on 16-of-20, 80% shooting along with 23 rebounds. Defensively, Michigan’s three point percentage of 20% looks gaudy but that may not be as real as it looks. Credit the Wolverines for taken long range Read more

NCAA Tournament Betting: Indiana's offense vs. Syracuse's 2-3 zone

Syracuse vs. Indiana -5.5 O/U 135.5

This East Region semifinal should prove to be a fascinating matchup. Indiana comes in with the 6th ranked FG percentage in the country at 47.6% while Syracuse counters with the 3rd ranked FG percentage defense at 37.3%. The Orange stumbled down the stretch of the Big East regular season losing four of their last five games but head coach Jim Boeheim got this team turned around and it all started with their run to the finals of the Big East Tournament. They melted down in the second half against Louisville but quickly regained their swagger with a convincing win over Montana in the first round followed by a solid win last time out against California. Syracuse held the Golden Bears to just 39.3% from the floor and 19% from the perimeter.

Syracuse’s defense takes a significant step up in class on Thursday as Indiana boasts a very potent and balanced offense that can score inside and outside. Jordan Hulls, Christian Read more

NCAA Tournament Gambling: Oregon reaches Sweet Sixteen despite turnover issues

Oregon vs. Louisville -10 O/U 129.5

It is hard to win in March when you can't take care of the basketball. That is what makes Oregon's two tournament wins all the more remarkable. The Ducks coughed it up 18 times in their first round win over Oklahoma State and matched that number against Saint Louis. Overall, the Ducks had 10 more turnovers than their opponents yet won by margins of 13 and 17. Oregon was able to offset its high rate of miscues by playing strong defense, particularly against the three-point shot. OSU and SLU shot a combined 8-of-38, 21% from deep. The Ducks were also a combined +12 on the glass. The question now becomes can Oregon beat (or hang) with Louisville with 18 turnovers? Probably not. The Cardinals are obviously a menace defensively but don't ignore how strong Read more

NCAA Tournament Handicapping: Stat Profiles for the Sweet Sixteen

Here are the numbers we’ve been following through the Dance in tip-off order by locale. Note that I’ve updated the pace rankings from Kenpom’s website…those are the numbers as of Tuesday evening. All the other numbers you see are CONFERENCE ONLY per game averages because I wanted to take out the crazy extremes of non-conference schedules, particularly since those games were played so long ago anyway. The “conference advantage” numbers from Jeff Sagarin’s computer ratings were also tabulated Tuesday night.

Some reference points.

The typical college defense allowed about 47.5% on two-pointers this year. Numbers less than that represent better than average inside defense. The typical offense made 6.0 treys per game. Interestingly, NONE of the 16 teams left averaged between 6.0 and 6.9 in their league games. We have quite a few trey-heavy teams at 7.0 makes or more. I’m surprised by how many teams were in the low 5’s or less. Always Read more

NCAA Tournament Betting News: Miami's Johnson ruled out vs. Marquette

Marquette vs. Miami-FL -5 O/U 127

Miami center Reggie Johnson (knee) has been ruled out of Thursday's game against Marquette. Johnson had taken on more of a reserve role this season but remained a key contributor on the glass (7 rebounds per game). Marquette was the No. 1 team in the Big East in offensive rebounding percentage (38.4) during league play. The Golden Eagles snagged 31 offensive rebounds in wins over Davidson and Butler.

Arizona vs. Ohio State -3.5 O/U 134

You couldn’t find two teams from different conferences that would be as familiar with what the other wants to do more than Arizona and Ohio State. Why is that, you might ask? Head coaches Sean Miller of Arizona and Thad Matta of Ohio State go back over two decades as friends and associates. They were assistants together at both Miami-Ohio and Arizona and Matta gave Miller a gig when he first took over as head coach of Xavier.

When Matta left Xavier for Ohio State his job went to Miller who eventually parlayed his solid run of success with the Musketeers into his current gig at Arizona. These two guys know each other well, they share many of the same philosophies and tactics and they have rosters that really mirror one another. And this isn’t the first time they’ve met in the NCAA Tournament: Who could forget the epic overtime thriller between Xavier and Ohio State back in 2006-07? Miller and the Read more

NCAA Tournament Handicapping: Florida Gulf Coast meets Florida in Sweet Sixteen

Florida Gulf Coast vs. Florida -13 O/U 133.5

By now everyone is aware of the Cinderella story of the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles who reached the Sweet Sixteen in just their second year of DI basketball. They were very impressive in their first two wins against Georgetown and San Diego State and now have a chance to reach the Elite Eight with a win over Florida.

On paper, it would not appear to be a good matchup for the Eagles as Florida is a solid defensive team that allows just 37.8% from the field and dominates the boards with a +5.3 rebound margin. However, the running and gunning Eagles just faced two teams that had strong defensive pedigrees and destroyed them both.

The interesting thing about FGCU is that they did not hit tons of threes to advance. They really didn’t even take many, which is a common factor in many NCAA tourney upsets. Against Georgetown, FGCU was 6-of-15 from deep and they were 8-of-19 against San Diego State. The vast majority of FGCU’s field goals were on dunks and layups, many of them created by the passing ability and court vision of point guard Brett Comer. He has been the most impressive ball Read more

NCAA Tournament Betting News: Far from pretty, Marquette reaches Sweet Sixteen

03.26.2013     01:10 PM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Marquette vs. Miami-FL -5.5 O/U 127

Of the remaining 16 teams in the NCAA Tournament, some will argue that Marquette has been the least impressive – and the most fortunate. Head coach Buzz Williams openly admitted that they could have very easily lost both games. In the first round Davidson's win probability was north of 95% with less than two minutes to go yet Marquette found a way to bury a couple of threes and win by one. Similar situation against Butler as the Bulldogs were seemingly in control of the game late only to let it slip away in the waning seconds. But we give credit to Williams who has now led Marquette to three straight Sweet Sixteen appearances. The third game however has proved to be problematic. In 2011, Marquette was crushed by North Carolina, 81-63. And last year, the Golden Eagles met a Read more
