NCAA Basketball Betting: Rivalry heats up between St. Bonaventure and Niagara

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
St. Bonaventure -9.5 at Niagara O/U 141

Some bad blood brewing between rivals St. Bonaventure and Niagara. Last year's win (as a 14-point underdog) marked the eighth straight for Niagara (6-2 ATS) in the series. Following the loss, Bonnies center Andrew Nicholson called out Niagara for being "unprofessional" in their postgame mannerisms.

"Niagara did a good job but the way they handled it I thought was unprofessional," he said. "The coach was harping on us during the game. You don't really see that, but I just think it was a program -- that was disrespectful.

"It's basketball. What's done between the lines should stay there. As the coach is coming (off), doesn't shake our hand, doesn't say anything to us, I thought it was unprofessional what he did. I mean congratulations to them, they played hard, they beat us."

"I have absolutely no idea what he's talking about," countered Niagara Joe Mihalich. "There's a chance I didn't (shake) because I don't Read more

NCAA Basketball Betting: Northern Arizona and Idaho State coaching changes

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Some news out of the Big Sky that seems to have flown under the radar. Both Northern Arizona and Idaho State saw their head coaches resign recently.

Joe O'Brien had a lot of success at the junior college level but could never kick start the Idaho State program (56-105 since 2006). Assistant Deane Martin has taken over on an interim basis. Martin is a first-year assistant who spent time as a coach in Mexico and with the NBDL. ISU lost to Wyoming 80-56 at home in Martin's debut. They play at Weber State tonight.

Northern Arizona's Mike Adras stepped aside back in early December and the Lumberjacks responded under 70-year-old interim coach Dave Brown with wins over Cal State Bakersfield and Arizona State. They were however blasted at Sam Houston State last time out, 73-49. NAU plays host to Sacramento State tonight.

The personnel for both teams are so poor this year that the coaching changes are unlikely to bring about a massive turnaround. The Big Sky is a flaky league where randomness tends to prevail but I have little to no interest in backing these squads anytime soon (4-12 ATS combined).

College Basketball Free Pick: UCLA Bruins at Stanford Cardinal

UCLA at Stanford -6 O/U 127
Recommendation: Stanford

UCLA just spend the better part of December trying to get back in the good graces of the betting markets. Apparently they've done enough to be competitively lined on the road against a quality opponent. But while the Bruins may have built some confidence, it doesn't necessarily mean they are a quality basketball team. The last five opponents were all nowhere near Stanford in terms of ability and they all took place in Los Angeles. UC Irvine, UC Davis, Eastern Washington – those are teams UCLA should be able to beat with their bench alone. Penn and Richmond are halfway decent and UCLA got all they could handle in both contests. Stanford outpaced the market place in November with a 6-0 ATS mark but stumbled last time out against Butler (as a 12.5-point favorite). That loss and UCLA's recent results provide what appears to me to be a decent discount. Lay the points in this PAC-12 opener.

NCAA Basketball Betting: Kent State determined to bounce back defensively

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Kent State -3.5 at Arkansas State O/U 127

Suspensions and injuries contributed to Kent State's 0-2 performance during last week's tournament at Utah State. Center Justin Manns was suspended (upgraded to probable for tonight) and point guard Michael Porrini remains at less than 100 percent due to a foot injury. Head coach Rob Senderoff has not been pleased with his team's effort of late, especially on the defensive end of the floor. The Golden Flashes allowed just one team to top 67 points before allowing 74 and 81 to Texas Arlington and Utah State. We would imagine a very strong effort tonight against offensively challenged Arkansas State.

“We are practicing, and we are working on some of the things we haven’t done well,” said Senderoff. “Right now, my biggest concern is our defense, because we did not guard well in Utah for two Read more

Indiana State -1 at Drake O/U 126.5
Recommendation: Indiana State

This looks like the best Sycamores team that we’ve seen in many years, and the betting markets simply haven’t caught up yet!  Let’s not forget Indiana State’s stretch run last year (a real confidence and momentum builder) when Greg Lansing’s team reeled off three wins in three days – two of them outright upsets – to win the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament and earn an NCAA bid.  That momentum has carried forward, particularly their ability to win games and cover spreads away from home.

The results don’t lie.  In their last road game, the Sycamores went to Vanderbilt – a top 25 team with a notoriously difficult home court – and pulled the outright upset as double-digit underdogs.  We saw this squad blow out Texas Tech on a neutral floor in Orlando and beat Louisiana-Monroe by double-digits in Read more

College Basketball Betting Trends: UConn opens Big East play at South Florida

UPDATE

Found this one from the archives. Dating back to the 2004-05 season, UConn is 1-6 SU and 2-5 ATS in its Big East openers (see below). Jim Calhoun noted prior to last year's opener against Pitt (Panthers won 78-63) that he didn't like having to play conference games prior to the New Year. Note that Calhoun will begin his three-game suspension tonight.

College Basketball Free Pick: Seton Hall Pirates at Syracuse Orange

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Seton Hall +15.5 at Syracuse O/U 137
Recommendation: Seton Hall

I realize that Seton Hall's 11-1 start was aided by more than a handful of creampuff opponents. I'm also aware that the Pirates won in the Carrier Dome last season by 32 as 12.5-point underdogs. But those factors don't outweigh that we have a capable underdog catching +15.5 in a conference game. Syracuse has the look of an elite team but in five games against decent competition, the Orange weren’t exactly posting 20-point wins left and right. They beat Virginia Tech and Stanford by 11 and six respectively at Madison Square Garden and slipped past Florida by four. Marshall went to the Carrier Dome and lost by six and NC State jumped out to a big lead before the Orange went on a crazy 23-0 run in the first half. The Wolfpack though managed to tie the game in the second before running out of steam in what ended up be a somewhat deceiving 88-72 loss. In Big East play last year, Syracuse Read more

NCAA Basketball Betting: Bettors anticipate slow tempo for Notre Dame vs. Pitt

12.27.2011     03:11 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Pittsburgh -2 at Notre Dame O/U 131.5

Anticipating that Notre Dame will once again unleash its burn offense against Pittsburgh, bettors have pounded tonight's total down five points off of the opener (136.5).  The Fighting Irish's slow down tactics played a key part in three straight wins over the Panthers, including last year's 49 possession, 56-51 bloodbath.

"We're trying to develop an identity without Tim," Brey said. "We always have it in our arsenal. We can go in and out of it during games, and we know we've won games with it in the Big East. But we've been wanting to attack and score."

"They've been pretty patient on offense the whole year," Dixon said. "We've been talking about our decision-making on offense. We feel like we're ready for it. When we get down in games, we have to have patience and Read more

College Basketball Betting: Nebraska makes injury-riddle Big Ten debut

Wisconsin -8.5 at Nebraska 107.5

Nebraska makes its Big Ten debut without a full complement of key players.

Caleb Walker (7.5 ppg, 4.7 rpg) - Questionable - Back
Corey Hillard (3 ppg) Probably - Sports Hernia - Probable
Dylan Talley (9.1 ppg, 3.6 rpg) - Thigh - Doubtful
Jorge Brian Diaz (10.9 ppg, 4.9 rpg) - Foot - Doubtful

Neither center Jorge Brian Diaz (sore feet) nor guard Dylan Talley (thigh bruise) has played or practiced in the last 10-plus days, and Sadler doesn't expect that to change in the near future.

Talley, who's missed Nebraska's last two games after re-aggravating a thigh bruise, is now bothered by strained muscles in the same area after overcompensating for the thigh injury. Sadler said Talley is "not close," and wouldn't play barring a Read more
