Houston at Cincinnati -10 O/U 137.5
Recommendation: Under

After dropping its AAC opener to Temple, 77-70, Cincinnati head coach Mike Cronin made it abundantly clear that his team was going to start guarding or else heads were going to roll. In typical Cinci fashion, they responded, and done so in a big way. Over their last three games, the Bearcats have held the opposition to 57, 59, and 51. And one of those games was on the highway against an SMU squad that has hung 80+ on a routine basis this season. Tonight's opponent, Houston, is also getting more defensive of late having allowed 54 ppg in three AAC wins. And for both squads, the pace of their games has slowed considerably with only one of seven contests topping 65 possessions and tonight's posted total of 137.5. Also note that thus far, the AAC ranks near the bottom nationally in free throw rate as we've seen a number of league games have that 2014-15 "feel" to it with low scores and low possessions. And while we use last year's results with a grain of salt, it's worth noting that both meetings failed to top 122 points. Appears that both teams' non-conference results are still Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Seton Hall Pirates at Villanova Wildcats

Seton Hall at Villanova
Recommendation: Over 66 1st half

Villanova's offense looked like a well oiled machine in Big East wins over Xavier and Creighton. The Wildcats hit a combined 51-of-64 from two and 19-of-43 from three. They can score from all over the court and have an endless array of offensive weapons. Seton Hall has been serviceable on the offensive end with 83 and 78 point efforts in wins over Marquette and DePaul. Both games also featured a fair amount of pace with 80 and 72 possessions respectively. What I don't buy is any of Seton Hall's defensive numbers as multiple metrics indicate the schedule has been extremely favorable in terms of its opponent's offensive potency. In fact, six of their foes are currently averaging less than a point per possession. The Pirates allowed 1.09 ppp in Big East play last season which means we can put little stock into their current output of 0.94 (32nd nationally). Tonight serves as a massive step up in class considering Villanova ranks sixth in offensive efficiency despite struggling from beyond the arc to start the season. You do have to be concerned about Villanova's ability on the defensive end which Read more

Montana State +1.5 at Southern Utah O/U 150
Recommendation: Montana State

Once you get beyond the top three teams in the Big Sky (Weber State, Montana, and Eastern Washington) there is a lot of parity throughout the league. One team that has caught my eye is Montana State who is in its second year under head coach Brian Fish. Last year was a clear rebuild as the Bobcats won only seven games. This year, they've already notched five wins including one over Wyoming and competitive showings against Nebraska-Omaha, North Dakota State and Buffalo. The schedule has been demanding with only two home games and they open league play on the road but should be rested and ready having not played since December 22. Southern Utah took a step forward last year with a respectable 7-11 league record. It's been a struggle this far however (3-8 SU, 1-7 ATS), especially without the services of their best player AJ Hess who missed the last four games and is doubtful for tonight. MSU's backcourt looks pretty strong with the addition of freshman Tyler Hall. MSU is shooting 38% from three as a team which bodes well against a very weak SUU defense (58% eFG, 345th nationally). Old Dominion at Richmond -4 O/U 134.5
Recommendation: Under

Richmond's schedule thus far has been littered with weak teams, poor defensive teams, and teams willing to push the pace. It's the reason why the Spiders' offensive numbers look really strong (1.10 ppg, 31st nationally). But in-state rival Old Dominion is the complete opposite. The Monarchs play slow, can't score, and rely heavily on their defense to stick around in games. In fact, only one ODU game this season has topped 135 points (vs. VCU). And while Richmond has scored plenty of points, they've also shown they can be held in check as they scored 59 vs. West Virginia and 56 vs. Florida. Old Dominion may not have that level of defensive acumen, but when you throw in its desire to slow the pace (349th nationally pace) it's reasonable to think Richmond will be held under 70 points. While you can only put so much stock into previous meetings due to various rule changes, last year's meeting was a grinder with ODU winning 63-57 on only 59 possessions. I think this will have more of a conference game feel to it as we step in with a play on the under.

Manhattan at Memphis
Recommendation:
Over 69.5 1st half

Manhattan is a total mess with various departures and injuries. Head coach Steve Masiello has been very candid about not really caring about what happens during the regular season so long as his team peaks come MAAC tournament time. The Jaspers are 1-6 and have allowed 80+ on four occasions. They press, play fast, and can't defend which isn't an ideal profile for a road game at Memphis. The Tigers have exceeded expectations thus far with solid wins over Ohio State and Louisiana Tech. Their two losses (Oklahoma and UTA) are nothing to be ashamed about either. Their shooting has a tendency to be hit or miss (a lot) but considering Manhattan's defensive numbers (56.9% eFG) and propensity to foul, the Tigers should have their way on the offensive end tonight. And speaking of fouls, that's going to be a huge factor in this game. Memphis' offense is predicated on driving and getting to the free throw line. Manhattan meanwhile fouls like crazy as its opponents score 28% of their points from the charity stripe. This is going to be an ugly one to watch but there should be some pace to it. Denver at San Diego -1 O/U 119
Recommendation: Under

Despite the seemingly low number, this is really the perfect storm of unders as Denver travels to San Diego. The Pioneers have long been one of the slowest teams in the country though were involved in a few "higher" scoring affairs in the comforts of home against the likes of Lipscomb, Utah Valley, Idaho State, and South Alabama. All four teams are very similar in that they like to play fast and don't do much in the way of defending. Tonight's opponent San Diego is pretty much the polar opposite of that as the Toreros, like Denver, are one of the slowest teams in the country and rely on defense to stick around in games. They seem to be adjusting to first-year head coach Lamont Smith's defensive philosophy by holding Drexel to 59 and San Diego State to 48 (albeit in a game held outside at Petco Park). Offensively, USD is a work in progress. Their "best" offensive performance came against woeful San Jose State where they netted 67 points on 67 possessions. All told, they rank in the 300's in virtually every offensive category. Denver is no great shakes either, averaging right at 1 Read more

South Alabama at Middle Tennessee State -10.5 O/U 142.5
Recommendation: Under

Middle Tennessee State has always been a defense-first, slow paced team under long time head coach Kermit Davis. And they've struggled offensively this season (0.99 ppp) because they're without their best point guard, Jacob Ivory, who has been sidelined with a concussion. South Alabama likes to get up and down the floor but its numbers are certainly skewed having played two power conference teams (NC State and LSU) and Belmont -- all three have the ability to score big points, especially against an average mid-major team like USA. And that's exactly what they did as the trio averaged 88 ppg. But I put more stock in USA's game at Denver which had only 65 possessions and 125 points. MTSU isn't as deliberate as the Pioneers, but there's a similar amount of defensive acumen. Also note that South Alabama kicked gunner Taishaun Johnson off the team recently. Johnson was a double-digit scorer and the team's top player in terms of possessions used. Last season, Johnson attempted the most free throws on the team and hit 78%. MTSU was able to control the pace in last year's meeting Read more

Notre Dame vs. Kentucky -11 O/U 136
Recommendation: Kentucky

For all that talk about Notre Dame's incredible season-long offensive production I think a lot of folks fail to realize that Kentucky is just as good at scoring the basketball. And the one luxury the Cats have is that even with a couple players having an “off night”, this team can still score at an incredibly efficient clip. Against West Virginia, Cauley-Stine, Towns, and Ulis combined for 3-of-10 from the floor and  11 points and the Cats still averaged 1.22 ppg and netted 78 points. Notre Dame can score too, but with what is essentially a five-man rotation, if two or three players underperform -- which is likely against UK's vaunted defense -- then Kentucky quickly becomes the better offensive team in this matchup. Defensively, it's of course not even close. The Irish don't force turnovers, are soft on the interior, and consistently lose the battle on the glass. Their only hope is to pack it in and hope Kentucky has an off shooting night from the perimeter. I can't come up with a facet of this game that favors the underdog which makes me more than willing to lay what is a Read more

Vanderbilt at Stanford -3 O/U 150
Recommendation: Under

There's no doubt that the shot clock adjustment for the secondary college basketball tournaments has had an impact on pace of play and scoring. How significant though depends largely on the matchup. I've seen games where it didn't really matter and others where it was probably worth an extra 15 points and 10 possessions. Both oddsmakers and the betting markets had priced totals anywhere from 6-15 points higher than they would be under normal circumstances. Tonight's Vanderbilt-Stanford game is currently priced at 150; about 12-14 points higher than a regular season matchup. From watching both teams, neither has been forced to adjust much to the rule change as they typically play at a moderate pace. And of the four games they've played, three went well below 150. The lone exception was the crazy 109-point second half between Vandy and South Dakota State. The Jackrabbits were two days removed from a wild shootout win at elevation over Colorado State and clearly had nothing left in the tank. I'll also point out the extra importance on tonight's contest with the winner earning a trip to the Read more

West Virginia -1 vs. Maryland O/U 138
Recommendation: Under

After spending the first half of the Big XII season playing wild, high scoring, up-tempo affairs, West Virginia's games have since cooled down a bit. Ten of the Mountaineers' first 12 league games had 142 or more possessions. Since then, only one, an overtime game against Kansas that was 59-59 at the end of regulation, topped 140 total possessions. The rest were far more moderate including WVU's 68-62 opening round win over Buffalo. The Bulls don't mind pushing the pace and either does WVU, but because of the close nature of the game, it stay well under the total of 150. Maryland will look to push in transition when given the opportunity, but ultimately, the Terps play at a moderate pace and rely heavily on their defense. Over the last month, nearly every single one of UM's games were slow paced and below 130 points. The only exception was against fast paced, no defense Indiana and that game hit 144 on 128 possessions thanks to 55 free throw attempts. The current side price suggests we'll have a competitive ball game leaving the likelihood of an even slower pace the last five minutes. Let's Read more
