CBB Betting Free Play: Western Carolina Catamounts at Wichita State Shockers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Western Carolina +16.5 at Wichita State
Recommendation: Western Carolina

Spot plays don't come around too often this early in the college basketball season but I'm not expecting an all-out effort from Wichita State this evening. On Tuesday, the Shockers grabbed a big road with at VCU – the type of victory that pads a resume and has everyone talking that despite losing five key seniors, Wichita is a force to be reckon with. That may be the case as there is a lot of talent on this team. But having seniors is what helps avoid letdown situations. Western Carolina closed out last season strong, taking Davidson to double OT in the So-Con tournament championship game. They don't have anything particularly special; Larry Hunter typically brings in raw athletes who play hard. Wichita led NC Central by 20 much of the second half but backed off late and won by 14. No one played more than 28 minutes in that game and I would imagine, two days removed Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Harvard Crimson at UMass Minutemen

Harvard at UMass -10 O/U 138
Recommendation: UMass

Because of graduation on transfers, Harvard is very different than last year's 26-win squad that reached the NCAA Tournament. The Crimson lost two seniors and two juniors that all played 25 minutes per game or more. Kyle Casey and Keith Wright were double-digit scorers who shot better than 51% from the floor. Brandyn Curry and Oliver McNally combined for 253 assists, 74 steals and over 15 ppg. Now Tommy Amaker is asking new guys (some of which freshmen) to go on the road and face the intense full court pressure of UMass. Noteworthy that Harvard committed four turnovers on its first four possessions last Friday against...MIT. UMass has made strides under Derek Kellogg, jumping from 15 wins to 25 last year. They return their core nucleus and have considerably more depth than last year. I expect the Minutemen to force a ton of turnovers against the Crimson which should lead to easy points and a double-digit win.

College Basketball Handicapping: Thoughts and opinions for 11/9 card

Here are some thoughts and opinions on tonight's college basketball card.

Michigan State vs. UConn - No opinion. I don't do games in Germany.

Ohio State vs. Marquette - Leaned Ohio State off the opener but price seems fair and Williams will have his kids ready to fight.

Fresno vs. Texas - Fresno still rebuilding. Market reacting to Myck Kabongo being out. Disagree with the move.

Miami (OH) at NC State - Miami w/ new coach (Cooper from TSU). Don't like what I see on paper. I'm very leery of NC State this year but line may be a tad short.

Georgia State at Duke - No opinion.

Drexel at Kent State - Market hammered this one. Kent completely new facing Grade-A defense – Drexel made huge strides on offense LY as well. Agree with the move.

Tulane at Georgia Tech - Like both teams. Line is fair.

South Alabama at Florida State - Florida State had its struggles last season when asked to win by margin and the Seminoles are YOUNG. South Alabama returns a lot of experience, has talent, and I'd lean that way even with the move.

Georgetown vs. Florida - Florida deserves to be favored, but this price is Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Wofford Terriers at Colorado Buffaloes

Wofford at Colorado -16.5
Recommendation: Colorado

Based on what I've been reading, Wofford is walking into an absolute buzz saw tonight in Boulder. A solid program and well coached but the Terriers are going clear across the country, to elevation, with 13 underclassmen on their roster, to face a far more experienced and talented squad. Wofford has exactly ONE senior who played all of 45 minutes last season. Head coach Mike Young even admitted that, "We'll be a different team in January and February than we are right now." Colorado is off a PAC-12 Tournament title and an NCAA berth. They lost a few players but word on the street says the Buffs have more talent than last year. Head coach Tad Boyle on what he expects from his kids tonight: "I told our players, when everybody leaves this building on Friday night after watching us play, they need to be going home to say to their neighbors and friends and co-workers, 'This team is fun to watch, Read more

College Basketball Handicapping: Getting a jump on oddsmakers and the betting markets

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The 2012-13 College Basketball season gets under way on Friday and this bettor has been hard at work trying to get a beat on as many teams as possible. Putting in the work during the preseason can put you well ahead of oddsmakers and the betting markets and over the last month I have been going through each conference paying special attention to teams with coaching changes. During my tenure at Sportsmemo I've produced three consecutive winnings seasons including 2011-12's 109-76 59% +33 unit mark. It is my strongest sport as a bettor and I encourage everyone to be a part of what hopes to be another successful campaign. For today let's take a look at a few teams I have pegged to take a step back this season. Assuming the market cooperates – which doesn't always happen – I'll be actively seeking spots to fade these squads during November.

Xavier - This one is almost too easy and everything I've read will assuredly be reflected in their prices, but the Musketeers are headed for tough times. Point guard Mark Lyons left for Arizona, second leading scorer Dezmine Wells was kicked off the Read more

College Basketball Handicapping: Gearing up for the 2012-13 season

Submitted by Andrew Lange

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
College basketball is just a few weeks away and I'm currently gearing up for what hopes to be another profitable season for myself and my clients. I’ve had three straight winning seasons and feel confident we can make it a fourth in 2012-13. In those three seasons, I released 525 documented plays that cashed at a 56% rate, good for over +50 units of profit on a one- and two-unit scale. Last year was very strong with a 109-76, 59% record and +33.6 units of profit. We make no guarantees when it comes to records and profits – anyone who does is a scam artist – but what I can promise is the same dedication and hard work.

As far as preparation goes, reading as much as I can has and will continue to be the most important part of my handicap. Whether it is preseason, mid-season, or March Madness, articles and blogs written by local beat writers and student newspapers have accounted for a good chunk of my profits over the years. The key however isn't always finding the information (though I have found plenty that wasn't accounted for in the better markets) but knowing what to do with it. When Michigan Read more
