College Basketball Handicapping: UNLV hosts Thanksgiving's Las Vegas Invite

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
College Basketball tipped off this week and there will be numerous holiday tournaments on the schedule over Thanksgiving weekend. One of which will be the Las Vegas Invitational hosted by UNLV. I attend the event annually and can usually be found in press row, and this year’s fan turnout should be the strongest ever with the local Rebels competing.

Note that UNLV will play USC in its opening game November 25th while No. 1 North Carolina battles South Carolina. The Rebels may get a shot at the top team in the country in early season action.

NCAA Basketball Gambling Preview: Akron Zips at Mississippi State Bulldogs

Akron at Mississippi State -7 O/U 142

Here’s a good game in the 2K Classic on Wednesday as perennial MAC power Akron tangles with the Bulldogs of Mississippi State. I expect both teams to be contenders in their respective conferences this season and this is a great early test for both.

The Zips have a solid front court and actually have the size to bang with the Bulldogs’ size inside. How long they can sustain pressure before getting into serious foul trouble is the $60,000 question though. Zeke Marshall is a legit 7-footer and finished top 20 in blocked shots in 2010 and Nik Cvetinovic brings a decent sized PF option at 6-9. If Mississippi State commits to getting Renardo Sidney and Arnett Moultrie the ball inside it could be a short night for Marshall and Cvetinovic and that would be a huge blow to the Zips chances of an upset. But that’s a big “if” for the Bulldogs in their commitment to going inside.

NCAA Basketball Free Pick: Eastern Kentucky Colonels at Mississippi State Bulldogs

Eastern Kentucky at Mississippi State
Recommendation: Under 63.5 1st half

Eastern Kentucky is known for two things: slow pace and three-point shooting. The Colonels ranked 327th in tempo the last two season and with three of their top four scorers gone, I project points will be hard to come by in the non-conference. Mississippi State returns only two starters but welcome in a few transfers and a highly regarded recruiting class. EKU runs a 1-3-1 defense in attempts to slow down the game and force opposing teams into outside shots. MSU isn't very patient and is prone to taking bad shots from the outside, even when they have a clear advantage on the front line. I'm looking to play the under in the first half as it will be a more controlled Read more

College Basketball Betting: William & Mary takes on shorthanded St. John's

William & Mary at St. John's -8 O/U 137

The college basketball season kicks off tonight in New York with William & Mary taking on St. John's. The Red Storm are going to be extremely shorthanded and inexperienced with only nine players and no returning starters. In fact, there is only one returnee – Malik Stith who averaged 3.3 ppg last year. Head coach Steve Lavin won't be present as he continues to recover from prostate cancer surgery. Assistant Mike Dunlap has been filling in for Lavin. Also note that while St. John's 2011 recruiting class was ranked No. 3 according to ESPN, three didn't qualify academically for the fall semester. William & Mary return four starters after going 10-22 in a rebuilding year.

College Basketball Handicapping: 2011-12 Head Coaching changes

10.26.2011     05:55 AM     Printer Friendly
List of all of the DI head coaching changes for the 2011-12 season. Former George Mason head coach Jim Larranaga steps in for Frank Haith at Miami (FL). Haith somehow landed the Missouri gig after Mike Anderson bolted for Arkansas. Cuonzo Martin built a winner at Missouri State and will attempt to do the same at Tennessee. Former BYU assistant Dave Rice steps in for Lon Kruger at UNLV while Kruger tries to rebuild Oklahoma. Billy Gillispie may have been over his head at Kentucky but he knows how to coach and walks into a decent situation at Texas Tech who ended its relationship with Pat Knight. Keno Davis' up-tempo, no defense style had no chance in the Big East which forced the Friars to take a shot with former Fairfield head coach Ed Cooley. And after serving as an ESPN announcer, former Alabama head coach Mark Gottfried takes over for Sidney Lowe at NC State.

Vegas oddsmakers still not sold on San Diego point-shaving

04.18.2011     07:04 AM     Printer Friendly
Article from the Las Vegas Review-Journal downplaying the San Diego point-shaving scandal. Just a week ago, the national media was pointing to players and specific games yet no one in Vegas or offshore spotted anything obvious – even after going back over past records.

"Yes, it's very possible something did happen. It might be nothing major. I think they're trying to make a club sandwich out of a piece of cheese," said Jimmy Vaccaro, director of operations for Lucky's sports books and an authority on this subject in general.

"I find it very difficult to believe that it's a rampant occurrence. It's too difficult to pull it off. There's just too many people involved, and somebody is going to talk," Kornegay said. "We have an excellent record in the industry. You can count on one hand the number of scandals we've had in the last 30 Read more

Oddsmakers unaware of suspicious betting on San Diego games

Submitted by Andrew Lange

When news of a point shaving scandal breaks it is always fun to go back and find the games in question, the "huge" line moves, and the key player who had two turnovers in the last minute that allowed the opposition to cover the number. But in the case of what went down yesterday at San Diego, it looks as if a lot more information needs to come out in order to determine whether or not there was indeed foul play.

The one thing that stands out in all of this is the reports or lack thereof from Vegas and offshore sportsbooks. According to Chad Millman's blog, he spoke to numerous parties and not one person was aware of any unusual betting patterns. Millman even said that a handful of Vegas oddsmakers didn’t even know about it until he mentioned the incident. Sure, it is possible that games have been fixed without bookmakers’ knowledge but it would be extremely difficult, especially in this day and age Read more

Pointspread woes from San Diego Toreros somewhat explained

04.11.2011     12:59 PM     Printer Friendly
In 2008, San Diego was considered on the rise in the West Coast Conference. The Toreros won the WCC Tournament and upset UConn in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The following year, the bottom fell out as departures left the team void of much talent. Since then, San Diego's claim to fame was losing at a high clip and its inability to cover pointspreads. Over the past three seasons, the Toreros went a combined 30-53-2 ATS – a truly awful mark for any program no matter how poor the talent.

News however came out today that an ex-assistant coach and two former players were allegedly involved in a pointshaving scheme. Brandon Johnson, one of the players charged, reportedly took brides to influence the outcome of games in 2010 and 2011. Brandon Dowdy, who played at USD for two seasons (2006-08) and then transferred to UC Riverside (2008-10), was said to have solicited someone into affecting the outcome of a Read more

North Carolina favored to win 2012 title; Williams not sure who will return

04.05.2011     09:56 AM     Printer Friendly
The Greek has posted odds on who will win the 2012 NCAA Championship. The usual suspects top the list with North Carolina as the favorite at 4-1. Ironically, head coach Roy Williams just came out and said he isn't "betting" on the decision of his players to return or head to the NBA. As a side note, if you check out The Greek's webpage, someone clearly made an error or is having little bit of fun by listing California and Clemson at +500.

Roy Williams: "Gut feeling? The NCAA says you shouldn’t bet, and I’m not betting on this one.”

Odds to win 2012 NCAA Championship
North Carolina +400
Kentucky +650
Duke +800
Kansas +800
Ohio State +800
Syracuse +800
Louisville +800
Florida +1200
UConn +1200
Arizona +1500
Butler +2000

NCAA Championship: Butler money continues to pour in

Butler vs. UConn -3 O/U 129.5

The line continues to fall as more and more money comes in on the Butler Bulldogs for tonight's NCAA Championship tilt against UConn. Most shops opened UConn -4 (Pinnacle -4.5) and once it hit -3, there was a steady stream of two-way action that bounced the line back and forth between -3 and -3.5. But over the last hour, it looks as if grabbing Butler +3.5 is no longer an option without using a drop-down menu. Of all of the major offshore and Vegas sportsbooks only Lucky’s is currently offering 3.5. Pinnacle went to plus money on UConn -3 but saw a small buyback. Grande has UConn -3 (-105) and BetPhoenix looks to be the first to move to -2.5, albeit -120 juice. In today's Las Vegas Review-Journal, Jay Kornegay and Jimmy Vaccaro offered their opinions on the game. Kornegay felt the -4 opener was high while the always candid Vaccaro likened the Read more
