College Basketbal Betting Free Pick: Arizona State Sun Devils at Oregon State Beavers

Arizona State at Oregon State -5
Recommendation: Oregon State

I'm not sold on Arizona's 13-2, 2-0 PAC-12 start. Are the Sun Devils better than last year? No question. But the schedule has been extremely favorable thus far and things get a bit tougher starting tonight in Corvallis. For starters ASU has played one true road game against a Texas Tech squad that just lost on its home floor to Baylor by 34. Next, the Sun Devils are 2-0 in league play but needed overtime to get past Utah and were gift-wrapped a win against Colorado after the Buffaloes were hosed out of one on the road against undefeated Arizona. Oregon State meanwhile below a six-point halftime lead and ended up losing to rival Oregon 79-66 at home. With Arizona on deck and then back-to-back road games in LA, all of a sudden this game has a lot of meaning. If Oregon State can keep ASU's Jahii Carson in check – I expect they’ll throw multiple defensive looks his way – I think Read more

College Basketball Betting: How long with Arizona's good fortunes last?

01.10.2013     06:15 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Good college basketball teams have a tendency to win more close games than bad teams – a theory that pretty much everyone subscribes to. However, throughout and entire season, even the elite at some point will fall victim to things not going their way late in a close contest. That brings us to Arizona who is undefeated despite playing a slew of close games over the last month.

vs. Florida: Florida has a 64-58 lead with less than a minute to go in Tucson. The Gators foul and Arizona hits two free throws to cut it to 4. Florida turns it over and Arizona races down and cuts it to Read more

College Basketbal Betting Free Play: Louisville Cardinals at Seton Hall Pirates

Louisville -10.5 at Seton Hall O/U 136.5
Recommendation: Over

Louisville has put up outstanding defensive numbers this season but if you dig a little you'll notice that quality teams have had varying degrees of success. Providence shot 45% from the floor and 40% from three. Kentucky was even better at 48.3%/47.6%. Memphis hit nearly 52% of its shots and Illinois State did the same. Some of those games were without the services of post presence Gorgui Dieng who is now back but the loss of Chane Behanan once again leaves the Cardinals without a quality defender. Pitno said Behanan will be replaced by Montrezl Harrell who doesn't yet understand the intricacies of the team’s defense. Make no mistake, Louisville is still an elite defense, but in its five games vs. BCS conference schools (and Memphis) the games scores were 145, 147, 165, 157 and 142. But beyond the “so-so” defense, the two main reasons of those high scores were pace and Read more

College Basketball Betting: West Virginia considers lineup changes

West Virginia at Texas -4.5 O/U 125.5

No shortage of topics when it comes to West Virginia basketball these days. Beat writers have already worn out the lack of toughness/no leadership angles. Now they’re going the potential lineup change route. The Mountaineers' big men have vastly underachieved and as a result, the team has been killed on the boards. Head coach Bob Huggins, who may or may not punch someone or something before the year is out, is considering going the small-ball route. The only problem is the team is shooting 28.7% from three. The Mountaineers have shot better than 50% eFG twice this season (vs. Marist and Oakland). Tonight they face one of the best defenses in the country in Texas (0.84 points per posession allowed).

College Basketbal Betting Free Play: Alabama Crimson Tide at Missouri Tigers

Alabama at Missouri -9 O/U 133
Recommendation: Missouri

If you look at Alabama's in SEC play last year, they didn't lose a game by more than 10 points despite going 9-7. But the Crimson Tide were a different team in part because they had JaMychal Green and Tony Mitchell on the front line. Even on off shooting nights, Bama's defense always kept them in the games. Green and Mitchell are obviously gone and while Alabama still defends, they simply aren't as strong. Tonight they go on the road to face Missouri with six freshmen and sophomores. We saw this team absolutely wilt under the pressure of VCU's press (16 turnovers, 39% FGs). They return guard Andrew Steele who will certainly help but reports indicate that he is not 100%. Missouri isn't as frenetic as VCU but they'll undoubtedly extend their pressure and they also have the size up front to force Alabama to shoot from the outside. It is a long season, but Alabama's home losses to Mercer and Tulane are big red Read more

College Basketball Handicapping: Oddsmakers, bettors overvalue Pittsburgh Panthers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Everyone knows Ken Pomeroy has a huge impact of the betting markets. Rarely do we see pointspreads or totals stray too far from Pomery's "predictions" unless there is a significant injury. But one ranking in particular has caught my eye. Last season, Pittsburgh finished 63rd (22-17, 5-13 Big East) in Pomeroy's rankings. Given Pitt's history of success and returning talent, the Panthers opened the year ranked 22nd – a mark that seemed fairly reasonable. But for whatever reason, Pitt skyrocketed up the rankings despite playing a soft, home friendly schedule. Heading into December 19th's game against Delaware State, the Panthers were 5th, despite playing one legitimate opponent; Michigan, on a neutral court and the Wolverines won 67-62. There were a handful of decent foes like Lehigh, Delaware and Detroit, but those games were at home and Pitt as expected won rather easily.

So then Big East play started and despite its very limited resume, Pitt closed as a 6-point home favorite over Cincinnati – a game the Bearcats won outright 70-61. Then last weekend, the Panthers took to the road to face Rutgers and were getting bet like people already knew the Read more

College Basketball Betting: Cincinnati looks for better effort vs. Notre Dame

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Notre Dame at Cincinnati -4 O/U 134

Cincinnati has flaws but the one thing bettors can typically bank on with the Bearcats is effort. And when you couple that effort with a better than average shooting night, Cinci is tough to beat. But in Saturday's 53-52 home loss to St. John's, Cinci not only couldn't shoot straight (31.7% FGs) but as head coach Mick Cronin pointed out, they were outplayed in pretty much every facet of the game.

"We got outplayed [for] 35 minutes," head coach Mick Cronin said emphatically in his postgame press conference. "We had one and a half guys come to play today. When that happens, you're going to lose."

"Point blank, they just beat us to every loose ball," he said. "Every rebound that came off, that got tipped, they got it. They just outplayed

College Basketbal Betting Free Play: Northwestern Wildcats at Minnesota Golden Gophers

Northwestern +16.5 at Minnesota O/U 131.5
Recommendation: Northwestern

The Gophers are fat and happy off their 18-2 closeout run against Michigan State on Monday, turning a very tight game into a blowout in the final four minutes. The Wildcats are looking for redemption following their worst loss of the season, a 99-64 home annihilation at the hands of #2 Michigan. It was a game where the Wolverines couldn’t miss, hitting just shy of 60% of their shots from both inside and outside the arc. Put those two factors together with this inflated double digit pointspread and Northwestern becomes a clear choice on Sunday.

Minnesota has repeatedly struggled to get good shots against the Wildcats 1-3-1 zone in every recent meeting. Northwestern has won four of the last seven meetings between these two schools, and Minnesota only has one win by more than eleven points against the Wildcats in the last nine games that they’ve played, a competitive Read more

College Basketbal Betting Free Play: Washington Huskies at Washington State Cougars

Washington at Washington State -5 O/U 129
Recommendation: Under

Both Washington schools appear to being going through a little bit of a style transformation this year. Washington has implemented a different offense due to its personnel that requires more patience on offense. So far, the Huskies are for the first time ever under Lorenzo Romar averaging below 70 possessions per game. And not only has the pace slowed but the offense isn't very potent. Against defensive-minded Ohio State, Colorado State, St. Louis and UConn, UW averaged 58.5 ppg. Tonight, they travel to take on a Washington State squad that is in its second year of stall ball. Ken Bone's teams ran at Portland State and did the same in his first two seasons in Pullman. Last year, however, with the offense focused on center Brock Motum, the Cougars averaged 62.9 possessions per game. This year, they are right on that number again and have played a litany of sub-60 possession contests. As a Read more

College Basketball Gambling: Tennessee a small favorite over rival Memphis

Memphis at Tennessee -2.5 O/U 129

Memphis and Tennessee rekindle their rivalry tonight in Knoxville. Because of all of the conference reshuffling in football, there is talk the series may not be renewed. Both teams have split the last eight meetings with the Volunteers cashing in six of those contests. Five of the eight went under the total, however, the lowest of the group was 143.5. Tonight's total is 129. As of this morning, Memphis' Tarik Black (groin) was doubtful while UT's Trae Golden (shoulder) is probable.

"We will not play Tennessee anymore as long as I'm the head coach and I'm doing the scheduling," he said, and never mind what the critics might say.

"The contract's ending, we have a new athletic director and he and I are on the same page with it," he said. "That's just
