MLB Handicapper Free Play: New York Mets at San Diego Padres

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
NY Mets (Gee) at San Diego (Latos) -145 O/U 6.5
Recommendation: San Diego

The Mets and Padres finish their three-game set today in the sunshine of Petco Park.  San Diego starter Mat Latos is very quietly pitching his best baseball of the season.  Over his last three starts he’s allowed a total of just five earned runs.  In addition, the strikeouts and command are there, with an 18-2 strikeout-to-walk ratio.  Keep in mind Latos fought a sore shoulder to start the campaign, which seemed to sap some of his effectiveness. Against a weakened Mets lineup sans Jose Reyes and Daniel Murphy, Latos should boast another strong outing today.  Meanwhile, Dillon Gee will start for the Mets.  Gee doesn’t have near the sizzling stuff of Latos.  He sports a healthy 10-4 record but the youngster could be wearing down after allowing 15 runs, five home runs and a 15-11 strikeout-to-walk ratio over his last four starts.  With San Diego’s lineup hitting as well as Read more

Chicago (Buehrle) -120 at Baltimore (Tillman) O/U 8.5
Recommendation: Under

The White Sox and Orioles wrap-up their three-game set tonight in Camden Yards. The best getaway day pitcher in the business will take the mound for the White Sox. Mark Buehrle has been in fine form for the Sox with seven-straight quality starts, while allowing a total of just nine earned runs in those seven starts. With his ability to work quickly and efficiently, the southpaw should carve through the Orioles lineup. Meanwhile, young Chris Tillman will toe the rubber for the Orioles. Tillman has faced his difficulties at the major league level, while showing a 4.85 ERA on the season. It felt like the Orioles rushed the right-hander in previous editions as he was just a raw, young thrower. He started 12 games in 2009 and another 11 games in 2010. Keep in mind, Tillman is still just 23-years-old and it feels that during his work in the minor leagues he’s figured some things out. In two outings since his most recent call up Read more

Philadelphia (Worley) -115 at San Francisco (Sanchez) O/U 7
Recommendation: Under

Philadelphia and San Francisco continue their heated series tonight with the Giants expected to send southpaw Jonathan Sanchez to the hill. This will be his first start since June 24 after battling bicep tendinitis. Overall, the left-hander possesses sweet stuff with a 3.81 ERA and just 68 hits allowed in 89.2 innings of work. The issue with Sanchez has always been command with a troubling 59 walks on the season. While rehabbing in the minor leagues however he was able to tweak his mechanics some and improve his control. During his delivery, Sanchez moved his glove closer to his body to keep his arm from dropping which resulted in the ball making more frequent trips through the strike zone. A higher number of strikes will undoubtedly lead to even Read more

MLB Betting Update: Lack of groundballs plagues Chacin

07.22.2011     11:32 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Two weeks ago Sportsmemo Handicapper Erin Rynning put the "fade" on Colorado's Jhoulys Chacin (see below) and it has certainly paid dividends for bettors. The Rockies have lost six straight starts with Chacin on the hill; the last of which extremely troubling (4.2 IP, 5 ERs, 7 BBs). According to Baseball Prospectus, one of the leading factors in Chacin's decline has been his groundball rate. Through the first three months of the season, he was hovering around the 60% mark. In July (4 starts) it's below 50% with seven home runs allowed. His next start should come next week in Los Angeles.

Cleveland Indians (Tomlin) at Baltimore Orioles (Arrieta)
Recommendation: OVER

The Indians and Orioles hook up once again on Friday night after plating 12 runs in Thursday’s contest. The Orioles expect to send youngster Jake Arrieta to the hill.

Arrieta shined bright in the early going, although the numbers were a bit deceiving. Anyway, the right-hander was an owner of an 8-3 record after a June 10 start against the Oakland A’s. Still his ERA stood at a 4.48 number and has only gone up since. In fact, he’s labored with a reported sore elbow for quite some time and the numbers clearly show he’s hurting.

Over his last three starts Arrieta shows a troubling 8/8 strikeout to walk ratio, which certainly makes sense as he fights through an injury. Arrieta shows a large split over the course of his short career, which is of great concern in this match-up. Left-handed Read more

MLB Betting Stock Watch: New York Yankees and Colorado Rockies

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Sell – New York Yankees – The Yankees have enjoyed a fabulous first half of the baseball season with a 53-35 record. A one-unit bet on every game the Yankees played this season and you’d be up roughly six to seven units. Much has worked out for the Bronx Bombers including the starting pitching of veterans Bartolo Colon and Freddie Garcia.

Colon is showing a 3.20 ERA, while Garcia owns a 3.13 number and both figures will be tricky to duplicate in the second half of the season. Their schedule was very friendly in the first half as well, which included 49 home games to just 39 on the road. With a veteran bunch built to win in Yankee Stadium this is a disparity to pay attention to.

The bullpen has been great as well, while owning the fifth best ERA in baseball at 3.11. With a banged up Mariano Rivera and while still dealing with other injuries this unit has perhaps peaked this season.

In addition, let’s consider the injury to Alex Read more

MLB Betting Stock Watch: Jhoulys Chacin showing signs of regression

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Jhoulys Chacin – Over the last calendar year, Chacin has been one of the best starters in the National League with a 2.89 ERA in 164.2 innings.  When you consider 15 of those 26 starts were at Coors Field, his performance is truly amazing.  However, if we can find cracks in the armor it also represents an opportunity to fade the young gun and make some money betting against him.  In his last two starts, Chacin has really battled himself on the mound.  The numbers are highly questionable with 10 earned runs allowed in 10 frames.  In addition, and most troubling, is his 9/9 strikeout-to-walk ratio with four home runs allowed.  He admitted he’s a bit of a mess mechanically, which is certainly concerning for the groundballer.  He also had a start pushed back due to arm soreness.  That gives us plenty of reasons to fade Chacin moving forward.

MLB Betting Stock Watch: Barry Zito in good form since return

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Barry Zito – No question, Zito has largely been a disappointment since joining the Giants including last season when he had no impact on their World Series run.  He was however all set for a spot in 2011’s rotation but injured his foot in March.  The setback required lengthy rehab including four starts in minors.  During his time away from the club, an interesting sensation seemed to occur as he somewhat fell back in love with the game of baseball.  The time spent in the lower levels among young, hungry players that most likely will never garner the opportunity he was given made a huge impact. And perhaps more importantly, from a pitching perspective, the experience allowed him to refine his mechanics and create more forward, downhill movement towards home plate.

By all accounts, the transformation worked wonders as he continues to pitch for a chance to stay in this stellar rotation.  In his three starts since being recalled he’s allowed only three runs Read more

San Diego (Moseley) at San Francisco (Bumgarner) -150 O/U 6.5
Recommendation: San Francisco

The Padres have taken the first two games of this four-game set in San Francisco as they’ll send Dustin Moseley to the hill tonight. Moseley currently features a troublesome 2-8 record, while the Padres are just 4-12 in games he’s started. It’s a bit hard to believe considering the right-hander owns a 3.07 ERA. However, we’d argue his caliber of pitching is closer to his win/loss record, rather than his ERA. On the season the 29-year-old has fanned just 45 batters in 94 innings of work. This coincides with just a 45/31 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

Meanwhile, Madison Bumgarner will toe the rubber for the Giants. The southpaw is extremely talented and features plenty of upside. He continues to fly under the radar from a value standpoint as well. The 21-year-old has experienced a crazy season to date with little run support as the common denominator. He struggled big time in his first Read more
