MLB Handicapper Free Play: Houston Astros at New York Yankees

Houston (Oberholtzer) at NY Yankees (Capuano) -160 O/U 8.5
Recommendation: Under

The Yankees return home to the Bronx after going 2-3 on their brief road trip.  Things could have been a lot worse as the Yankees stole two games against Tampa on Saturday and Sunday.  The Bronx Bombers have been anything but as they continue to struggle scoring runs.  They've scored just 14 runs in their last 7 games with the under going 6-1 in those contests.  The Houston Astros come into town tonight after a good offensive showing in Boston over the weekend.  Houston managed 24 runs while splitting the four-game set with the Red Sox.  The Yankees should have their hands full again tonight as Brett Oberholtzer takes the mound for the Astros.  Oberholtzer has gone 7 innings in each of his last three starts giving up five earned runs over that span.  He has been the Astros most consistent starter since the All-Star break.  New York counters with veteran Chris Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Play: New York Yankees at Texas Rangers

NY Yankees (Kuroda) -135 at Texas (Lewis) O/U 9
Recommendation: New York

The Rangers have been consistent losers for months; an easy team to fade in this ‘short underdog’ price range.  They rallied for seven runs in the final three innings against the Yankees bullpen last night but still came up a run short, when Adrian Beltre’s long fly ball with the bases loaded in the ninth was caught on the warning track.

Frustrating losses aren’t new or different for Ron Washington’s squad this year.  They are 3-8 in their last eleven games since the All Star Break; 7-30 since they were last at .500 back on June 16th.  When a team that expected to compete for the playoffs goes 23 games under .500 in less than seven weeks, you know that they’re in full-on tank mode.

The Rangers have a legitimate home field disadvantage these days, because the home field is priced into their lines but they aren’t winning games on this field Read more

NY Yankees (McCarthy) -110 at Cleveland (Tomlin) O/U 8
Recommendation: Over

No question Brandon McCarthy has pitched better than his raw numbers but I'm not convinced a "fresh" start in New York is going to spark significant change. For starters, the move to the American League, particularly the East, is a significant step up in class. And with McCarthy being such a heavy groundball pitcher (55.3%) he needs a strong infield defense for support. He pitched behind a mediocre one in Arizona and it gets even worse in New York with the Yankees ranking near the bottom of a number infield defense metrics. Lastly, tonight's matchup vs. Cleveland is far from ideal with one of McCarthy's biggest issues this season being that of the left-handed bat. Even though he's been unlucky in a lot of respects, lefties are still hitting .323 vs. McCarthy. Josh Tomlin has been up and down this season and despite shutting out Seattle two starts ago his ERA is above 5.00 over his last six outings. Read more

MLB Handicapping: Brandon McCarthy takes his sexy xFIP to New York

07.07.2014     08:15 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Just like the betting markets – and the title of FanGraphs' recent article – the New York Yankees are betting on Brandon McCarthy and xFIP. McCarthy's season has hurt the brains of a lot of bettors – strong K numbers, lots of groundballs, and plenty of bad luck. His two biggest issues were home runs (15 in 109 IP) and playing for a bad team and it resulted in a 3-10 record and -11.5 units. Now McCarthy is headed to New York –a better team but a more difficult league and a stadium notorious for being tough on right-handers who give up the long ball (Phil Hughes, anyone?). No word on when McCarthy will make his Yankees debut.

"McCarthy is an experienced starter that we expect to pitch well for us," Girardi said. "I know he's had his struggles but he seemed to turn around. He's got a good arm. His last few starts have been pretty good. He's got too good of stuff not to."

MLB Handicapper Free Play: Tampa Bay Rays at New York Yankees

Tampa Bay (Archer) +100 at NY Yankees (Phelps) O/U 8
Recommendation: Tampa Bay

Expecting a strong bounce back performance from Tampa’s Chris Archer who entered last Tuesday’s game versus Pittsburgh with a 0.89 ERA in his previous seven starts (40.2 IP).  On top of his strong recent form, Archer has been a problem for the Yankees going 4-0 with a 1.26 ERA and 0.63 WHIP since entering the Rays’ rotation last year. He was able to overcome the dreaded “right hander in Yankee Stadium” syndrome twice last season throwing 15 innings of 1 run ball while posting 10/1 K/BB numbers. Earlier this season he tossed 6.2 against NY allowing just three hits and one run. Tampa comes off a 3-1 series win over division opponent Baltimore this past weekend and gets another chance inside the division to help themselves. The Yanks are scrambling in the AL East as well having lost their final two weekend home games to Boston but tonight’s starter David Phelps just Read more

MLB Handicapping: Baltimore Orioles go with six-man rotation

06.20.2014     08:25 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Baltimore (Jimenez) at NY Yankees (Kuroda) -140 O/U 8.5

Not easy to find positives when dealing with Baltimore’s Ubaldo Jimenez. However, with the Orioles now going with a six-man rotation, Jimenez has performed well when pitching off of extra rest.

“I hope [it helps],” Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. “Some people say, ‘Well then is it too far away from pitching?’ In his case, he’s responded well to it, so we hope it happens again. Any time they get a little extra time with Dave, I’m for it. He’s one of the best. It’s a hard delivery to coach through, but his track record’s been pretty true through the second half of the season. We’re going to try to trust that.”

MLB Handicapping: New York's Whitley thriving with strikes

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Toronto (Buehrle) at NY Yankees (Whitley) -105 O/U 9

The New York Yankees may have found a legitimate middle-of-the-ration arm in rookie Chase Whitley. The former 15th round pick doesn't throw particularly hard (91-92 mph) but his success (2.41 ERA) has come from throwing strikes. He enters tonight's game against Toronto having not walked a batter in four straight outings. The slate for Whitley though has been favorable with three starts against the National League and two on the road vs. Seattle and Kansas City. The Blue Jays in Yankee Stadium will be his toughest test to date.

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
NY Yankees (Nuno) at Kansas City (Vargas) -130 O/U 7.5
Recommendation: Kansas City

The Yankees have sunk back down to .500 with seven losses in their last ten games.  The biggest culprit in their recent slump has been an anemic lineup, particularly their struggling ‘middle of the order’ bats.  The Bronx Bombers haven’t been bombing, held to four runs or less in each of those last ten contests.  For the season, the Yanks now rank #13 out of 15 AL teams in runs scored, a bottom tier lineup despite their enormous payroll.

Carlos Beltran has only one hit in 14 at bats since coming off the DL. Mark Teixeira was scratched yesterday with a sore wrist, hitting only .176 in his last 16 games.  Brian McCann is hitting just .225 for the season, well below his career norms.  And Derek Jeter is in the midst of a 3-23 slump over his last six games.   Jeter’s quote speaks volumes: “When guys are scuffling it seems like Read more

MLB Handicapping: Yankees continue to slump with the bats

06.09.2014     07:55 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
These days pretty much every team will go through some sort of extended offensive slump. Right now we're witnessing a doozy of one from the New York Yankees who find themselves 31-31 and six games in back of Toronto in the American League East. On May 17, New York's team offensive numbers were a respectable .264 BA, .327 OBP, .419 SLG, and .742 OPS. Following last night's 2-1 loss to Kansas City those numbers now read: .253/.315/.382/.697. During that span of 21 games, the Yankees went 9-12 and averaged 3.2 runs per game.

"Most guys have been around a long time," left fielder Brett Gardner said. "Guys that work really hard and take a lot of pride in what we do. When we come up in situations where we've got guys on base, guys in scoring position — especially less than two outs — we've got to find a way to get those guys in. And we haven't really been doing a good job of that. We know that. We're aware of it. We see it. We feel it."

MLB Handicapping: Chicago's Chris Sale returns from DL

05.22.2014     07:40 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
When healthy, Chicago's Chris Sale is as filthy as they come but his herky-jerky motion is also like the cause of the arms troubles he's endured throughout his career. He's back off the DL and slated to start tonight against the Yankees. Sale posted a 2.30 ERA in four starts before being shelved for a month.

"I'm excited," Sale said. "It's been a long time. It's something I've been looking forward to. It's been longer than I expected. I think it was just our taking time and not rushing back before the rehab process [was over], to come back at 100 percent."

"He threw free and easy," White Sox manager Robin Ventura said after monitoring the bullpen session. "It's another step in the right direction. We'll continue to see how he is."
