MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: New York Yankees at Texas Rangers

New York (Severino) -115 at Texas (Griffin) O/U 9
Recommendation: New York

New York's Luis Severino came into this season with a lot of fanfare following 2015's 11 starts and 2.89 ERA. It's however been a struggle as Severino has been smacked around for 25 hits in 16.2 IP. Prior to his last start, he made some mechanical adjustments that seemed to work as he produced his first quality start of the season (6 IP, 2 ER) vs. Oakland. It was far from a stellar effort as the Yankees' defense saved a few runs but with his velocity up I see bettor efforts on the horizon. Texas' AJ Griffin has consistently outpitched his peripherals with a 3.58 career ERA and 4.36 FIP. A lot of that has to do with Griffin being an extreme fly ball pitcher but tossing in the friendly confines of Oakland. During his lone full season as a starter in 2013, Griffin allowed 21 home runs in 95.2 IP on the road. The Yankees have struggled with the bats this season but should be primed for some offense after facing five straight left-handed starters. Also note that Dellin Betances and Andrew Miller threw an inning apiece during last night's 3-1 win but combined for only 19 pitches and Read more

Tampa Bay (Moore) at New York (Sabathia) -105 O/U 8.5
Recommendation: Under

Tampa's Matt Moore has passed every test this season with a 2.95 ERA and stellar 21-to-3 K-to-BB ratio through three starts. He walks into a positive situation tonight pitching against the soft-hitting Yankees in Yankee Stadium. CC Sabathia hasn't been nearly as sharp with a 5.06 ERA through two outings. Sabathia is nothing more than an inning eater at this point but has a decent shot at a quality start tonight pitching at home against a manageable lineup. Thus far both teams have shown some fairly weak splits against lefties. The Rays rank 20th in MLB with a .655 OPS while the Yankees are even worse at 26th with a .611 OPS. New York's offense has been abysmal of late with just 18 runs in its last eight games (1-7). The last two left starters the Yanks faced -- no-names Rich Hill and Eric Surkamp -- surrendered just three earned runs and recorded 13 strikeouts in 11.2 IP. Bettors should also expect to see New York stud relievers Dellin Betances and Andrew Miller as neither pitcher has thrown since Tuesday. We've seen some early money on the over which gives us an opportunity Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Oakland A's at New York Yankees

Oakland (Hill) at New York (Severino) -126 O/U 8
Recommendation: New York

The A’s have a better early season record than the Yankees do.  That being said, moving forward, I see much more upside with New York’s roster than with Oakland’s.  And I have no hesitation betting against A’s starter Rich Hill.  Hill will be facing a lineup built to hammer opposing left handers, bad news in a situation where the Bronx Bombers are looking to avoid the three game sweep at home.

When Rich Hill is on, like he was once in three starts this year (against the Mariners), he’s a decent starter.  But Hill’s consistency has been a problem, as has his health; a guy who has only thrown 187 big league innings since throwing 195 innings back in 2007.  Four other teams have given up on him since the start of the 2013 season.  Behind Hill, the A’s spotty bullpen has already been overused.  And the A’s anemic lineup is averaging only three runs per game, producing more than five runs only once in 15 games – if their pitching isn’t elite, they’ll have a hard time Read more

New York Yankees
2015 W-L:
87-75
2015 O/U:  77-81-4
2015 Profits:  -3.4 units
2016 O/U Wins (Westgate):  86.5
2016 AL East Odds (Westgate):  11/4
Projected Starting Rotation: Masahiro Tanaka, CC Sabathia, Michael Pineda, Nathan Eovaldi, Luis Severino
Key Departures:  Chris Young, Adam Warren
Key Additions:  Aroldis Chapman, Starlin Castro

Handicapper's Take: "On the surface, the Yankees look like an aging team that is a few injuries away from finishing .500. But if you look beyond the elder statesmen trio of Rodriguez, Beltran, and Teixeira there's a lot of young talent. Didi Gregorius eventually became a big upgrade over Derek Jeter. I also like the upside of 22-year-old Luis Severino who has the potential to be the best starting pitcher on the staff though his workload will likely be capped at around 150 innings. And unlike past seasons, there's talent waiting in the wings with a handful of players in the Read more

New York (Eovaldi) -120 at Cleveland (Bauer) O/U 7.5
Recommendation: New York

I think we have a good spot and matchup to back the Yankees as short road favorites as they should be poised to bring a level of desperation and intensity as they look to avoid a sweep at the hands of the Cleveland Indians. New York has lost five straight games and can ill afford to get swept by Cleveland with another big series on deck against AL East leader Toronto at the Rogers Centre. Nathan Eovaldi is on an impressive stretch where he’s allowed 3 runs or less in 9 straight outings with the Yankees going 7-2 in those outings. He pitched a gem against the high powered Blue Jays lineup in his last start allowing a single run on 5 hits in 6.1 innings of work and should be able to keep the light hitting Indians in check tonight. Trevor Bauer gets the start for Cleveland tonight and I’ve bet against him a handful of times this season. Bauer has been extremely inconsistent with a 5.60 ERA in 12 home starts this season. He's given up 4+ runs in three of his last five starts and Cleveland is just 1-4 in his last 5 trips to the hill. I’ll support the road Read more

MLB Betting News: Yankees place Ellsbury on the DL

05.20.2015     08:06 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Significant injury for the New York Yankees with Jacoby Ellsbury (knee) headed to the DL. The Yankees rank second in MLB with a .399 on-base percentage from the lead-off spot -- most of which courtesy of Ellsbury. He also leads the American League in stolen bases with 14. Brett Garnder will likely assume the lead-off role. Ellbury's absence changes the dynamic of the Yankees' lineup with Ellsbury, a lefty, batting .333 vs. right-handers. Chris Young, who is slated to replace him, shows an extremely strong split (.189 vs. righties, .368 vs. lefties).

Toronto (Norris) -120 at New York (Sabathia) O/U 7
Recommendation: Toronto

CC Sabathia was an ace level pitcher for more than a decade in his prime.  That was then, this is now.  Sabathia was nothing short of awful before getting shut down last May, lit up repeatedly in his eight starts.  That stretch was no different from his post All-Star Break stretch in 2013 when he was also largely ineffective.  And it’s surely worth noting that Sabathia’s average fastball velocity has been declining rather precipitously in recent seasons – he just doesn’t throw quite as hard as he used to.

Sabathia came into spring training weighing well over 300 pounds.  As he worked his way back into shape off last year’s knee surgery, he was, once again, nothing short of awful in Grapefruit League action, throwing only ten innings worth of work while allowing nine earned runs (including three dingers) in the process.  There was absolutely nothing ‘confidence inducing’ about his spring efforts.  Toronto’s lineup is as fearsome as any in baseball; a team built to hammer lefties like Read more

New York's roster says it wants to win now but that's a tall order given the team's aging personnel. The pitching staff kept this team afloat in 2014 and will be asked to do so again.

New York Yankees
2014 W-L:
84-78
2014 O/U: 68-90-4
2014 Profits: -2.4
2015 O/U Wins: 81.5
2015 AL East Odds: +450
Projected Starting Rotation: Masahiro Tanaka, CC Sabathia, Michael Pineda, Nathan Eovaldi, Chris Capuano
Key Departures: Ichiro Suzuki, Martin Prado, David Robertson, Derek Jeter
Key Additions: Nathan Eovaldi, Andrew Miller

Handicapper's Take: "Is it 2008? It feels that way when you glance through the Yankees' aging roster. Nearly their entire lineup is comprised of players north of 30 years old -- some of which aren't even close to being above average major league hitters. Last season, New York was one of the strongest 'under' teams in baseball as it struggled to score runs on a consistent basis. With much of last year's Read more

Tampa Bay (Archer) at NY Yankees (Kuroda) -130 O/U 7
Recommendation: New York

The NY Yankees are in a must win situation.  In fact they are in 21 must win situations to end their season.  Monday was their last day of rest before attempting to make one last push towards the postseason.  Five games back of Seattle for the second wild card spot seems doable if the Yankees can get hot, but they will also have to rely on a few teams to play .500 baseball.  "I'll never give up on them; it's just not my personality,'' Girardi said.  "They just have to continue to grind it out, try to get better every day."  The good news for the Yankees is they trot out Hiroki Kuroda to the mound tonight against the Rays.  Kuroda has been the Yankees most consistent pitcher since the All-Star break.  Kuroda won his last start out against the Rays in a 4-2 win at Tropicana Field on August 17th.  Yankee bats are excited to see Tampa starter Chris Read more
