MLB Betting News: New York Yankees turning a profit despite injuries

05.13.2013     02:14 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Last season, the New York Yankees won an American League-high 95 games. From a betting perspective, they were profitable but not by much at a shade under +4 units (Baltimore won 93 games and was +36.8 units). In one of the more shocking and under-the-radar stories thus far in 2013, the Yankees are the second most profitable team in the American League at about +9 units (heading into today). The reason of course is that you could fill out an entire roster with who is on the DL. And it isn't just the raw number but more so the names: Rodriguez, Nova, Youkilis, Teixeira, Granderson, and Chamberlain. Yet despite that, the Yankees have, dare we say it…betting value! Just check out the viewership of Yankee games this season. No one is watching! And no one is betting them either because last year the average price on New York was around -145. This season? A dirt cheap -112.

MLB Betting Notes: Yankees send rookie Nuno to the hill vs. Cleveland

05.13.2013     08:15 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
NY Yankees (Nuno) at Cleveland (Bauer) -120 O/U 8.5

New York's Vidal Nuno will make his first-ever MLB start in Game 2 of today's doubleheader against Cleveland. Nuno was drafted in the 48th round back in 2009 and pitched in the Independent League for a brief while. His minor league numbers are pretty strong (426.1 IP, 2.38 ERA, 405 Ks, 81 BBs). He threw three scoreless innings out of the bullpen against Houston back on April 29. Here's a good scouting report on the 25-year-old lefty.

Nuno has found a way to make his size and velocity work. He uses a lower 3/4 arm slot that appears to put a large amount of sink on his fastball. At 87-88 miles per hour, the fastball hardly sounds strong, but he can locate it extremely well. His breaking pitches include a curveball and a changeup, both of which have major league players looking like fools Read more

MLB Betting News: Sabathia trying to get by with diminished fastball

04.12.2013     01:41 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Baltimore (Gonzalez) at NY Yankees (Sabathia) -150 O/U 8

The New York Yankees don't seem all too concerned about CC Sabathia's significant drop in velocity. Even Sabathia himself said that it was something you simply cannot control. We agree as Sabathia is getting up there in age and has logged over 2,500 MLB innings. However, at the end of last season, Sabathia's fastball averaged 92-93 mph. His two starts this year were around 90 mph.

Sabathia's Fastball Max-Average
2007: 97.6-93.7
2008: 98.9-93.8
2009: 98.2-94.1
2010: 99.3-93.6
2011: 98.4-93.9
2012: 96.3-92.4
2013: 91.8-90.1

"I'm fine," said Sabathia, who averaged 94.1 mph with his fastball as recently as 2009, and 92.4 last season. "My arm feels fine, I'm healthy. If there was a problem, I'd Read more

MLB Gambling News: New York's Phil Hughes under the weather

04.11.2013     07:18 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
NY Yankees (Hughes) -110 at Cleveland (McAllister) O/U 8.5

Looks like New York's Phil Hughes is dealing with some sort of stomach bug. Ivan Nova was scheduled to start yesterday's game but it was rained out and the Yankees will skip Nova and start Hughes instead. Note that Hughes has had a lot of success against Cleveland (5 starts, 2.61 ERA). He also sports dramatic reverse splits. Last season Hughes was dominant vs. lefties (.210 BA) and struggled vs. righties (.306 BA). That would seem favorable against the left-handed heavy Indians lineup.

MLB Handicapping: New York Yankees send struggling Nova to hill vs. Detroit

04.05.2013     08:09 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
NY Yankees (Nova) at Detroit (Fister) -185 O/U 8

When was the last time the New York Yankees were a +170 underdog? That's the current price for tonight's game in Detroit as Ivan Nova takes on Doug Fister. According to reports Nova didn't have a good spring and seems to be struggling with his mechanics. Nova went 2-5 with a 7.05 ERA, 1.63 WHIP, and .309 BAA after the All-Star break last season.

"The adjustments were not major," Rothschild said. "It’s something that when he’s right he does throughout, it’s just a matter of trying to make him more consistent with it. There’s some adjustment there, but it's not -- I don’t know if that’s why he’s had a bad spring."

"I don’t think he pitched as well as we’d like him to, but a lot of times that doesn’t make a difference as long Read more

MLB Postseason Betting: Detroit's Scherzer says he's in good form

10.17.2012     11:07 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
-NY Yankees (Sabathia) -115 at Detroit (Scherzer) O/U 7

Article on the health status of Detroit's Max Scherzer. Scherzer missed some time at the end of the season with a right deltoid injury. It was at the tail end of a run that saw him go 6-0 with a 1.41 ERA. His velocity following that stretch was significantly down but last time out against Oakland, his fastball averaged 93 mph which was just a tick below his season average. Still, over the last month, Scherzer has made only four starts for a combined 16.1 innings.

"It's kind of like spring training," he said. "I am building back up."

"Anytime you catch an offense like that where they're searching for adjustments, you kind of know that's going to happen," he said. "It's something new that we have to face.

"It's just going to be which hitters are going to make the biggest Read more

MLB Handicapping Notes: Sabathia's velocity up in first start off DL

07.18.2012     09:55 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Some positives on CC Sabathia's first start off of the DL in which he tossed six innings of shutout ball (1 BB, 6 Ks) against Toronto. According to one Yankees blog, his velocity was up as was the movement on his pitches.

Comparing his pre-DL and post-DL starts above, you’ll see that he’s gained from .5 to a full 1 MPH of additional velocity in both the average speed and maximum speed. The difference in movement is the most exciting change, he’s adding adding 2 inches of additional rising action on both his fastballs, as well as an inch on the slider.

MLB Gambling Alert: OVER in play with McClelland behind the plate in New York

07.16.2012     01:44 PM     Andrew Lange     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Andrew Lange

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Tim McClelland is one of the few umpires I still consider playing blind (Hirscbeck the other) even though he hasn't been as OVER heavy this year (10-7 O/U). I did notice five of his last six have cashed tickets with those six averaging 11.5 runs per game (9.5 runs per game avg. on the season). There were some mediocre arms in those six games but that is exactly what we are getting tonight in New York with Phil Hughes and Henderson Alvarez. Also note that both lineups have combined for 242 home runs and there were eight hit in last night’s Angels/Yankees game in the Bronx. Toss in the hot temps and grabbing the 10.5ov-115 is a bet worth making.

MLB Betting Alert: Yankees down another starter as Pettitte breaks ankle

06.27.2012     12:59 PM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

OK, so the Yankees lost CC Sabathia for a few starts. No big deal, they can just chuck out Sweaty Freddy for a few games and hope to just outscore the opposition. Now Buster Olney is reporting Andy Pettitte will miss six weeks with a broken ankle.

MLB Gambling News: Sabathia out until after the All-Star Break

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It wouldn't be a normal day in Major League Baseball without a starting pitcher heading to the DL. This one a little more newsworthy as New York's CC Sabathia will be out until after the All-Start break with a groin injury. The rest could actually be a blessing in disguise considering how many innings that dude has thrown over the last few years. Plus we get an opportunity to bet against this guy.

"You're talking about him missing two starts," manager Joe Girardi said. "You could have tried maybe to have him not start this Friday and then have him start on Wednesday, but our thought is you're risking him maybe missing 7-8 starts if he hurts it worse."
