MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: New York Yankees at Houston Astros

New York +135 at Houston (Keuchel) O/U 7
Recommendation: New York

Each of these starting pitchers have been throwing well for an extended period now which figures to make it tough on each lineup tonight. The Yankees have struggled far more offensively than Houston has since the All-Star break being held to three runs or less in seven of their 10 games while the Astros have scored four or more in six of their nine. Houston also has been rolling for two months now going 37-16 since May 24 while New York to their credit has faced a tough 10 games to start the second half and come away with a 6-4 mark which keeps them in the AL Wild Card hunt. Shipping closer Aroldis Chapman is far from a waiving of the white flag by the Yankees who still possess one of the best bridge to closer duos in MLB. The matchup of Michael Pineda’s power pitching (56 Ks L 40.1 IP) versus Houston’s strikeout prone lineup (897 is MLB’s 3rd most) favors New York.  Pineda has also shown solid control over his last 12 outings walking only 16 batters in the 67.2 inning span. His mound opponent in this one, Dallas Keuchel has a 2.84 ERA and 1.29 WHIP over his last Read more

Texas (Hamels) -110 at New York (Sabathia) O/U 8.5
Recommendation: Texas

A lack of betting market respect has been commonplace with the Texas Rangers with +30 units in the bank despite being 33 games over .500. Cole Hamels has been exceptional over his last three starts allowing just two runs in 20.2 innings of work with Texas winning all three of those games. On the season, lefties have hit only .208 off of Hamels with a miniscule OPS of .630. New York has had a tough time offensively particularly against lefties with the 27th ranked slugging percentage (.386). On the flip side, C.C. Sabathia’s magical ride of a season came to a bit of a halt in this last outing as Colorado got him for 6 runs on 7 hits in 4.1 innings and he left that game with an ankle injury. The Yankees said he is good to go for this start but I’m left to wonder if maybe that rough outing is the beginning of a tailspin for an aging arm that is north of 3,000 innings and currently sporting the best numbers we’ve seen since 2011.  Also note that Texas has mashed lefties this season with the fourth-best OPS in the league. At a near pick ‘em price, Texas Read more

New York (Eovaldi) at Baltimore (Tillman) -125 O/U 8
Recommendation: Under

My clients and I have bet on Nathan Eovaldi in each of his last two starts, cashing a right side winner with the Yanks 6-0 win over Toronto and a wrong side winner when the Yanks beat the Rays 2-1 despite getting only one hit.  Eovaldi was nothing short of outstanding in both of those outings, an emerging ace level hurler who is not yet fully respected by the betting marketplace.

Make no mistake about it.  Eovaldi is now only tasked with throwing six innings thanks to the dominance of the Betances/Miller/Chapman relief trio in the seventh, eighth and ninth.  Since Chapman joined the team following his early suspension, Eovaldi has gone 4-0 with a 2.05 ERA, striking out more batters (20) than hits allowed (17). Between strikeouts (8.5 K/9) and ground balls (54.3%), Eovaldi is a good fit for Camden Yards.

Each of Eovaldi’s last three starts have stayed Under the total with room to spare.  He’s 6-4 to the Under this year, and it’s surely worth noting that the Yankees scored at least seven runs in all four Overs.  I Read more

New York (Eovaldi) at Baltimore (Tillman) -125 O/U 8
Recommendation: Under

Baltimore’s Chris Tillman continues to pitch at a rock solid level and should be a candidate for MLB Comeback Player of the Year. Tillman currently sports a 2.92 ERA and an even better 2.04 ERA in seven home starts at Camden Yards in which Baltimore has gone a perfect 7-0. His strikeouts per 9 innings have jumped from 7.1% in 2015 to 10%. His is making better pitches and inducing a lot more swings and misses. Tillman has dominated the Yankees in seven career starts at Camden Yards having allowed three runs or less in each outing. That is bad news for a Yankees lineup that is slumping miserably right now. They were held to two runs or less in four straight games (5 runs total) before last night’s outburst against Detroit’s suspect bullpen. New York’s Nathan Eovaldi has the look of a ‘bet on’ hurler as well. Eovaldi has always been able to throw hard but appears to finally be harnessing his talents. He enters off of three straight dominant outings (2 runs in 18 IP) against Arizona, Toronto and Tampa Bay. The Yankees have also won each of his Read more

New York (Tanaka) -110 at Toronto (Sanchez) O/U 8
Recommendation: Under

The Toronto Blue Jays will attempt to sweep the New York Yankees tonight in the series final. The team north of the border has won the past four meetings and taken six of seven overall. The recently hot Jays have also won five of the last six games Aaron Sanchez has started. The young righty who was a former 1st round draft pick has started to put it all together this year with a 3.29 ERA which is in line with a 3.24 FIP.. On the other side, Masahiro Tanaka has returned to his winning ways over his past two starts, posting a 0.64 ERA in 14 innings against the A's and Rays. He took a no-decision in a 3-2 win on April 12 at Toronto, allowing two runs in five innings. Both Sanchez and Tanaka have had previous success against the opposing lineups, including Sanchez’s performance on April 12th, going six innings and giving up only one run. Sanchez has also limited the opposition to three earned runs or fewer in eight of his 10 starts this season. Each starter projects favorably and with two of the best bullpens in baseball, runs should be at a premium. We’ll look to play Read more

New York (Nova) +105 at Oakland (Graveman) O/U 8
Recommendation: New York

Ivan Nova has been as good as the Yankees could have hoped for since being inserted into the starting rotation on a spot start basis with Luis Severino on the DL. Nova has allowed just two runs in 10.1 innings over a pair of starts against Kansas City and the Chicago White Sox. Nova should be able to pitch fairly well here against Oakland as he has allowed just five runs in 13.2 innings of work previously against the Athletics here in this ballpark. All that Nova needs to do is pitch his way through five or six innings and let the dominant back end of New York's bullpen take over with their power arms Dellin Betances, Andrew Miller and closer Aroldis Chapman all set up to close out the game if the Yankees hold a lead in the latter stages. Kendall Graveman has not been able to find his footing or any sort of rhythm. He’s been hit hard repeatedly (5.84 ERA) and things have gotten worse for him in recent starts with 20 runs allowed over his last 19.1 innings of work. Graveman has issued six walks and struck out just three in his last two outings. Oakland is a dismal 1-6 in Read more

MLB Handicapping: New York's Severino enduring sophomore slump

05.03.2016     08:36 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Pegged to be an up-and-coming star, New York's Luis Severino has struggled mightily this season. Reports have hinted that his mechanics may be off and that there's not enough separation between his fastball -- which averaged nearly 96 mph -- and his change up.  He's no doubt been a bit unlucky with a .417 BABIP and 62% LOB rate. But his line drive and hard hit rates currently sit above 30%. If he struggles again against Baltimore tonight, there's a good chance he gets demoted.

“You want to have separation between your pitches,” Girardi said. “When pitchers are too close in velocity in their pitches, that’s why you see so many foul balls, because they’re not as fooled as much as they need to be fooled from a speed standpoint.”

New York (Severino) -115 at Texas (Griffin) O/U 9
Recommendation: New York

New York's Luis Severino came into this season with a lot of fanfare following 2015's 11 starts and 2.89 ERA. It's however been a struggle as Severino has been smacked around for 25 hits in 16.2 IP. Prior to his last start, he made some mechanical adjustments that seemed to work as he produced his first quality start of the season (6 IP, 2 ER) vs. Oakland. It was far from a stellar effort as the Yankees' defense saved a few runs but with his velocity up I see bettor efforts on the horizon. Texas' AJ Griffin has consistently outpitched his peripherals with a 3.58 career ERA and 4.36 FIP. A lot of that has to do with Griffin being an extreme fly ball pitcher but tossing in the friendly confines of Oakland. During his lone full season as a starter in 2013, Griffin allowed 21 home runs in 95.2 IP on the road. The Yankees have struggled with the bats this season but should be primed for some offense after facing five straight left-handed starters. Also note that Dellin Betances and Andrew Miller threw an inning apiece during last night's 3-1 win but combined for only 19 pitches and Read more

Tampa Bay (Moore) at New York (Sabathia) -105 O/U 8.5
Recommendation: Under

Tampa's Matt Moore has passed every test this season with a 2.95 ERA and stellar 21-to-3 K-to-BB ratio through three starts. He walks into a positive situation tonight pitching against the soft-hitting Yankees in Yankee Stadium. CC Sabathia hasn't been nearly as sharp with a 5.06 ERA through two outings. Sabathia is nothing more than an inning eater at this point but has a decent shot at a quality start tonight pitching at home against a manageable lineup. Thus far both teams have shown some fairly weak splits against lefties. The Rays rank 20th in MLB with a .655 OPS while the Yankees are even worse at 26th with a .611 OPS. New York's offense has been abysmal of late with just 18 runs in its last eight games (1-7). The last two left starters the Yanks faced -- no-names Rich Hill and Eric Surkamp -- surrendered just three earned runs and recorded 13 strikeouts in 11.2 IP. Bettors should also expect to see New York stud relievers Dellin Betances and Andrew Miller as neither pitcher has thrown since Tuesday. We've seen some early money on the over which gives us an opportunity Read more
