MLB Handicapper Free Play: Tampa Bay Rays at New York Yankees

06.30.2014     10:30 AM     Rob Veno     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Rob Veno blog entry.
Tampa Bay (Archer) +100 at NY Yankees (Phelps) O/U 8
Recommendation: Tampa Bay

Expecting a strong bounce back performance from Tampa’s Chris Archer who entered last Tuesday’s game versus Pittsburgh with a 0.89 ERA in his previous seven starts (40.2 IP).  On top of his strong recent form, Archer has been a problem for the Yankees going 4-0 with a 1.26 ERA and 0.63 WHIP since entering the Rays’ rotation last year. He was able to overcome the dreaded “right hander in Yankee Stadium” syndrome twice last season throwing 15 innings of 1 run ball while posting 10/1 K/BB numbers. Earlier this season he tossed 6.2 against NY allowing just three hits and one run. Tampa comes off a 3-1 series win over division opponent Baltimore this past weekend and gets another chance inside the division to help themselves. The Yanks are scrambling in the AL East as well having lost their final two weekend home games to Boston but tonight’s starter David Phelps just Read more

MLB Handicapping: Baltimore Orioles go with six-man rotation

06.20.2014     08:25 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Baltimore (Jimenez) at NY Yankees (Kuroda) -140 O/U 8.5

Not easy to find positives when dealing with Baltimore’s Ubaldo Jimenez. However, with the Orioles now going with a six-man rotation, Jimenez has performed well when pitching off of extra rest.

“I hope [it helps],” Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. “Some people say, ‘Well then is it too far away from pitching?’ In his case, he’s responded well to it, so we hope it happens again. Any time they get a little extra time with Dave, I’m for it. He’s one of the best. It’s a hard delivery to coach through, but his track record’s been pretty true through the second half of the season. We’re going to try to trust that.”

MLB Handicapping: New York's Whitley thriving with strikes

06.18.2014     08:10 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Toronto (Buehrle) at NY Yankees (Whitley) -105 O/U 9

The New York Yankees may have found a legitimate middle-of-the-ration arm in rookie Chase Whitley. The former 15th round pick doesn't throw particularly hard (91-92 mph) but his success (2.41 ERA) has come from throwing strikes. He enters tonight's game against Toronto having not walked a batter in four straight outings. The slate for Whitley though has been favorable with three starts against the National League and two on the road vs. Seattle and Kansas City. The Blue Jays in Yankee Stadium will be his toughest test to date.

NY Yankees (Nuno) at Kansas City (Vargas) -130 O/U 7.5
Recommendation: Kansas City

The Yankees have sunk back down to .500 with seven losses in their last ten games.  The biggest culprit in their recent slump has been an anemic lineup, particularly their struggling ‘middle of the order’ bats.  The Bronx Bombers haven’t been bombing, held to four runs or less in each of those last ten contests.  For the season, the Yanks now rank #13 out of 15 AL teams in runs scored, a bottom tier lineup despite their enormous payroll.

Carlos Beltran has only one hit in 14 at bats since coming off the DL. Mark Teixeira was scratched yesterday with a sore wrist, hitting only .176 in his last 16 games.  Brian McCann is hitting just .225 for the season, well below his career norms.  And Derek Jeter is in the midst of a 3-23 slump over his last six games.   Jeter’s quote speaks volumes: “When guys are scuffling it seems like Read more

MLB Handicapping: Yankees continue to slump with the bats

06.09.2014     07:55 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
These days pretty much every team will go through some sort of extended offensive slump. Right now we're witnessing a doozy of one from the New York Yankees who find themselves 31-31 and six games in back of Toronto in the American League East. On May 17, New York's team offensive numbers were a respectable .264 BA, .327 OBP, .419 SLG, and .742 OPS. Following last night's 2-1 loss to Kansas City those numbers now read: .253/.315/.382/.697. During that span of 21 games, the Yankees went 9-12 and averaged 3.2 runs per game.

"Most guys have been around a long time," left fielder Brett Gardner said. "Guys that work really hard and take a lot of pride in what we do. When we come up in situations where we've got guys on base, guys in scoring position — especially less than two outs — we've got to find a way to get those guys in. And we haven't really been doing a good job of that. We know that. We're aware of it. We see it. We feel it."

MLB Handicapping: Chicago's Chris Sale returns from DL

05.22.2014     07:40 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
When healthy, Chicago's Chris Sale is as filthy as they come but his herky-jerky motion is also like the cause of the arms troubles he's endured throughout his career. He's back off the DL and slated to start tonight against the Yankees. Sale posted a 2.30 ERA in four starts before being shelved for a month.

"I'm excited," Sale said. "It's been a long time. It's something I've been looking forward to. It's been longer than I expected. I think it was just our taking time and not rushing back before the rehab process [was over], to come back at 100 percent."

"He threw free and easy," White Sox manager Robin Ventura said after monitoring the bullpen session. "It's another step in the right direction. We'll continue to see how he is."

Pittsburgh (Volquez) at NY Yankees (Phelps) -130 O/U 8.5
Recommendation: Yankees

It looked as if a new surrounding was going to be the elixir for Edison Volquez after a disastrous 2013. In his first four starts, Volquez posted a sharp 2.02 ERA but some of his success was no doubt fortunate. He wasn't missed many bats (14 Ks in 26 innings) and his BABIP was well below .250. Since then we've witnessed more of the old Volquez with a 9-8 K-to-BB ratio and 8.80 ERA over his last three starts – one of which came against the Toronto Blue Jays. He faces another American League team tonight in a ballpark that isn't an ideal fit for right-handed pitchers. The Yankees are far from potent offensively but I expect them to stack their lineup with left-handed bats tonight. Over the last two years Volquez has had a very difficult time keeping lefties in check. New York's David Phelps is starting out of necessity and I typically wouldn't be looking to support him unless the situation was Read more

MLB Handicapping: Yankees and Mets send two rookies to the bump

05.15.2014     12:03 PM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
NY Yankees (Whitley) -110 at NY Mets (deGrom) O/U 7.5

Bettors will need to familiarize themselves with New York's two rookie starters for tonight's game at Citi Field. For the Yankees, right-hander Chase Whitley will make his MLB debut after serving primarily as a reliever in the minor leagues. He has however started six games at the Triple-A level this season with a 2.39 ERA and 32-7 K-to-BB ratio. Whitley was originally a 15th round draft pick in 2010. For the Mets, righty Jacob deGrom will also be making his MLB debut. The former 9th round pick has posted a 3.87 ERA and 92-34 K-to-BB ratio in 114 innings of work at Triple-A the last two seasons. According to Baseball America he was the Mets' no. 10 prospect heading into the season. Oddsmakers and the betting markets seems indecisive about the side with the game currently lined close to a pick 'em. The total Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Play: New York Yankees at Milwaukee Brewers

NY Yankees (Sabathia) +125 at Milwaukee (Lohse) O/U 8
Recommendation: New York

We appear to be getting a fair amount of value with CC Sabathia and the New York Yankees tonight in Milwaukee. It's well documented that CC's velocity is down and he isn't the pitcher he was three years ago however his decline has been well accounted for in the betting markets. This year's raw numbers don't look good but Sabathia has pitched significantly better than his 5.75 ERA. His strikeout rate is 9.74 per 9 innings and his xFIP is among the league leaders at 2.89. He'll definitely benefit from facing a National League lineup that is without a power bat in Ryan Braun. Hard to say much bad about Kyle Lohse who continues to thrive in the National League. Some of his numbers lean towards fortunate and unsustainable – and he's typically weaker against left-handed bats which the Yankees have plenty of. Off a poor outing and returning to his old stomping grounds I think Sabathia is sitting on a Read more

MLB Handicapping: Sabathia not a bad bet so long as price is right

05.06.2014     08:10 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Excellent article on CC Sabathia courtesy of FanGraphs. Sabathia's decline in velocity has been well documented, particularly in the betting markets. But he appears to be somewhat reinventing his repertoire. Sabathia is throwing more sinkers and thus getting more groundballs. Unfortunately, due in large part to Derek Jeter's lack of range, his BABIP is .361. Outside of Sabathia's 5.75 ERA the numbers suggest he hasn't pitched that bad this season. His strikeout rate is a career-best 9.74 (probably unsustainable) and his xFIP is 2.93 (16th in MLB among qualified starters). He's also been very tough against lefties (.130 BA against, .273 SLG). The bottom line when betting Sabathia is value. He should be priced as nothing more than a slightly above average lefty. Note that of Sabathia's seven starts, he's 0-3 -4.50 units as a favorite. As an underdog a significantly better return: 3-1 +2.75 units.
