MLB Betting Notes: Cobb starts for Tampa Bay Rays

05.19.2012     06:46 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Atlanta (Delgado) at Tampa Bay (Cobb) -110 O/U 8.5

With Jeff Niemann on the DL, the Tampa Bay Rays called up Alex Cobb to start today against Atlanta. Cobb made nine starts last season (3.42 ERA).

"I think all my velocity's back," said Cobb, whose 2011 season got cut short due to season-ending surgery to remove a blood clot and blockage in the area of his first right rib. "I have a good feel for my offspeed pitches. I did have one bad start and another start I was sick, so I don't really look too much into that one. I had to come out in the second. Other than those two starts, I've been feeling pretty good."

MLB Betting News and Notes: Boston (Buchholz) at Tampa Bay (Hellickson)

Boston (Buchholz) at Tampa Bay (Hellickson) -140 O/U 8.5

Nice breakdown from ESPN Stats & Info on tonight's Boston-Tampa Bay matchup. Clay Buchholz threw his first quality start of the season last time out (6.1 IP, 3 ERs vs. Cleveland) but failed to record a strikeout. He's allowed 36 earned runs and 10 home runs with a dismal 22-20 K-to-BB ratio. Yet despite being arguably the worst starter in baseball (statistically), the Red Sox are 4-3 in his starts. Hellickson remains an interesting study. His generic numbers are strong (2.95 ERA, .227 BAA) but there are some potential red flags (88.5% LOB, .228 BABIP, 5.16 FIP).

MLB Betting News: Tampa likely to call up Cobb to replace Niemann

05.16.2012     07:30 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
With Jeff Niemann on the DL with a broken ankle, the Tampa Bay Rays are expected to make some changes to their starting rotation. The team doesn't have to decide on who will replace Niemann until this weekend though early indications suggest that we'll see righty Alex Cobb who pitched well as a rookie last season (3-2, 3.42 ERA). Chris Archer is another potential candidate.

MLB Betting News: Baltimore calls up lefty Eveland for spot start

Tampa Bay (Hellickson) -125 at Baltimore (Eveland) O/U 9

With Jason Hammel (knee) on the shelf, the Baltimore Orioles called up veteran Dana Eveland for a spot start tonight against Tampa Bay. Eveland has pitched well in Triple-A with a 2.21 ERA.

"He had a good year in a very hitter-friendly park in Triple-A and has had some success at times in the big leagues," Showalter said. "He's pitching real well down there, pitching as well as any of their starters are, so I think we're lucky to have him. We'll see if Tampa agrees with me."

MLB Betting News: Tampa Bay Rays use defensive shift to their advantage

04.27.2012     06:53 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Very interesting article on the Tampa Bay Rays and how effective their defensive shift has been. Last year, it reportedly saved an MLB-high 85 runs.

"We talked about some things in Spring Training where the shift is becoming a little bit more unique to each player. Each shift is unique in its own way," Zobrist said. "It just varies depending on what they see on the spray charts with where these guys generally hit the ball."

"I just think it becomes more and more a game of who can make the adjustment first," Zobrist said. "We're trying to make the adjustment out in the field before they even hit the ball, because we know how we're going to pitch them, we know how they're generally going to hit the ball, and if we put ourselves in the right spot, we're going to catch a lot of line drives and balls that are normally hits for these guys."

MLB Betting Notes: LA's Ervin Santana searches for better command

04.24.2012     07:58 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Los Angeles (Santana) at Tampa Bay (Price) -140 O/U 8

LA's Ervin Santana tries to regain his form after three rough starts. The first inning has been problematic for Santana having allowed three runs in each outing. The home run ball is also an issue – as it has been for much of his career – with six long balls (two each game) allowed. According to Santana, his lack of command with the fastball has been the issue.

"There's not a lot he has to change to just give this team a chance to win," Scioscia said. "[Finding fastball command] is not that big of an adjustment. It's all in his delivery. He can make a quick fix."

"The location of the fastball — that's why we have bullpen sessions — I need to keep it down and control it," Santana said.

MLB Betting Notes: Tampa's Moore could be tipping pitches

04.20.2012     11:03 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Minnesota (Hendriks) at Tampa Bay -165 O/U 7.5

Tampa Bay lefty Matt Moore's early season struggles may be tied to him tipping his pitches. Last time out Moore was rocked by Boston for six runs, two homers and four walks.

There were other possibilities: that Gimenez, in his first game since being called up from Triple A, was giving something away by setting up too soon, or that the Sox hitters were peeking in or somehow stealing signs. "All possibilities, I guess," Gimenez said.

"Guys were just ready to hit fastball," said Adrian Gonzalez, one of only two Red Sox hitters to swing at a breaking ball all afternoon. "When you see spin, you just lay off. A guy who throws hard, he's going to get more swings on the changeup than he is on the curveball because of the fact that it looks like a fastball. Read more

Wade Davis looks to be the odd man out of the Rays' rotation to start the season with James Shields, David Price, Matt Moore, Jeremy Hellickson and Jeff Niemann occupying the top five spots.

Tampa's pitching staff is being called the deepest in baseball. Alex Cobb was sent down to the minors after showing well during last season's call up. Some scouts say Cobb could be a No. 3 or No. 4 on other teams. There is also no room for top pitching prospects Alex Torres and Chris Archer. In the bullpen, the Rays acquired Fernando Rodney and get JP Howell back from Read more
