MLB Betting News: Rockies have allowed 70 runs during eight-game losing streak

06.15.2012     07:11 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Colorado Rockies (24-38, -15.7 units) are now 0-9 in Interleague play and have lost eight straight games overall. During the eight-game losing streak, they've allowed 8, 10, 8, 10, 11, 7, 6 and 10 runs. Amazingly, since the late season meltdown of 2010, the Rockies are 98-143. For tonight, Jeff Francis makes his second start since coming off the DL. He allowed 10 hits and eight earned runs in 3.1 innings last time out against the Angels.

"What makes this so frustrating is that you want to win now," pitcher Jeff Francis said. "It's not about winning in two years, it's about winning now. Back then, it was almost like being in the minor leagues.

"I mean, you played to win and you played to be successful, but there was a bigger picture. But now it's hard to see a bigger picture because of these losses."

MLB Handicapper Free Play: Chicago White Sox at St. Louis Cardinals

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Chicago WS (Floyd) +115 at St. Louis (Westbrook) O/U 8.5
Recommendation: Chicago

St. Louis starter Jake Westbrook has been an absolute disaster area for a month now; 0-4 with an ERA approaching 8.00 in his last six starts while giving up 48 hits in just 31 innings of work.  He’s been pitching with a cut on the middle finger of his throwing hand; a lingering issue that has clearly affected his mound presence.  The Cardinals bullpen behind Westbrook has been struggling mightily, ranked in the bottom quartile of the majors in ERA, blown saves and losses. The White Sox had scored 25 runs in their previous three games prior to getting blanked last night – their high octane lineup has been clicking on all cylinders for weeks, ranked #6 out of 30 MLB teams in runs scored this year.   There’s absolutely no reason to think that Chicago won’t be able to tee off on Westbrook and the bullpen behind him tonight; producing runs in bunches. Shaun Marcum has apparently been granted the ability to pick opposing teams and pitchers

06.14.2012     01:29 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Milwaukee's Shaun Marcum has always been an interesting study. From a stuff standpoint, he isn't flashy, but he's managed to keep batters off balance for much of his career. But we’re not here to call out Marcum as some smoke-and-mirrors fraud. Instead we'll make mention of the fact that few starting pitchers if any have faced an easier slate of opposing offenses.

Marcum's Opponents (NL total runs rank out of 16)
vs. San Diego (15)
vs. Pittsburgh (16)
at LA Dodgers (6)
vs. San Francisco (11)
at Houston (8)
vs. Chicago (14)
at San Francisco (11)
at San Diego (14)
vs. Houston (8)
vs. Colorado (1)
at Atlanta (3)
at Chicago (14)

Note that Marcum faced Colorado in Milwaukee (the Rockies have scored the fewest road runs of any team in the NL) and also had the luxury of facing LA in pitcher friendly Dodgers Stadium. But wait! Let’s take this a step further and check out the opposing pitchers during Marcum's 12 starts. Now he did face two quality arms in Matt Cain (twice) and Erik Bedard. But beyond that, it has been a litany of below average pitchers: Edinson Volquez (twice), JA Happ (twice), Chris Read more

MLB Handicapping: Kansas City's Luke Hochevar should improve

06.14.2012     08:14 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Milwaukee (Marcum) -115 at Kansas City (Hochevar) O/U 8.5

On the surface, Kansas City's Luke Hochevar has been one of the worst starters in baseball with a 3-7 record and 6.57 ERA. But there is no question he's been unlucky this year. He sports the second highest BABIP (.364) among qualified starters and has a dismal 57.5% left-on-base rate (the league average is around 70%). Also, his Fielding Independent Pitching (FIP) rate of 3.61 is above league average. Does that mean he's going to immediately turn things around? Probably not, especially with his confidence level not being very high at this point. The good news is the Royals don't have a lot of options so he'll continue to get the ball every fifth day. If his "luck" can turn around, he has the potential to eventually get back to last year's post-All-Star break form when he posted a 6-3 record and 3.52 ERA.

MLB Gambling News: Cincinnati's Leake ready to go after bout with flu

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Cleveland (Tomlin) at Cincinnati (Leake) -120 O/U 9

Unfortunately we don't have a database for how pitchers fare after a bout with the flu. According to reports, Cincinnati's Mike Leake – one of many on the team that caught the bug – is ready to go for this afternoon's start against Cleveland. Leake spent yesterday recovering and claimed he was feeling better. He has been pitching better of late with a 2.84 ERA over his last five starts. In five career Interleague starts, Leake owns a 3.48 ERA.

MLB Betting News: Tigers put Smyly on DL, Fister his likely replacement

The Detroit Tigers placed Drew Smyly on the DL due to a blister. Doug Fister, who has been on the DL with a side strain, threw a bullpen session yesterday and may start in Smyly's place on Saturday.

MLB Handicapping: American and National League Run Differentials

06.14.2012     06:46 AM     Printer Friendly
Update of MLB's runs scored, runs allowed, run differential and luck. Luck is a tool from Baseball-Reference that provides the difference between a team's actual record and Pythagorean W-L. For example, the Cardinals are second in the NL in run differential yet only one game over .500 and in third place in the Central. Based on their run differential, they should be 37-26 not 32-31. Baltimore is 10 games over .500 yet a modest +4 in run differential. Pittsburgh is three games over .500 but has been outscored by 25 runs.

MLB Betting Alert: Matusz scratched, recently demoted Arrieta gets nod

06.13.2012     12:34 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Pittsburgh (Correia) at Baltimore (Arrieta) -135 O/U 9

Baltimore's Brian Matusz has been scratched for tonight's start against Pittsburgh. He was hit in the nose while attempting to bunt during batting practice. Enter stage left Jake Arrieta who after allowing nine earned runs last time out was demoted to the bullpen. Being on regular rest however, he was a logical choice to replace Matusz. Perhaps the second chance and facing the Pirates will bring about some better results.
