MLB Gambling Notes: Boston Red Sox remain under .500 as offense slumps

06.13.2012     10:58 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Not swinging the sticks and as a result not winning many games of late as the Boston Red Sox reside in last place in the American League East; 6.5 games out of first. After opening June with back-to-back seven run performances, the Red Sox are hitting .217 and averaging three runs per game during their 2-7 stretch. They've still scored the third most runs in baseball on the season and Jacoby Ellsbury and Carl Crawford are expected to start their rehab assignments shortly.

“This is the big leagues and you’re going to face tough pitching every night, so that’s not an excuse in my mind,’’ said Sox first baseman/right fielder Adrian Gonzalez. “We were fortunate tonight because our pitching was so good, but we need to be able to score more runs for our guys. I know this team is capable of it and we’re just going through a drought right now, but Read more

MLB Betting News: Buchholz in better form thanks to off-speed pitches

06.12.2012     08:23 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Boston (Buchholz) at Miami (Buehrle) O/U 8.5

Boston's Clay Buchholz has enjoyed a nice turnaround with a 3.10 ERA over his last six starts. Some of his success can be attributed to better off-speed stuff. The ability to change speeds is a good recipe for success against a fastball-hitting Miami lineup. Note however that Buchholz will throw on normal rest after a season-high 125 pitches.

Buchholz threw just 82 change-ups in his first 39 innings, and only eight of those brought on a swing-and-miss. His curve was his top whiff pitch, but it was right around the average -- it wasn't doing anything special, and he was relying on it too much in that sense. He has thrown 92 change-ups in the 34-1/3 innings since, and with markedly better results: the off-speed offering has more than twice as many swings-and-misses on it, with 20 of the 92 striking Read more

MLB Gambling Alert: Marlins desperate for offense, decide to play with rooof open

06.12.2012     06:33 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Last night marked the first time since April 18 that Marlins Stadium played a game with the roof open. The reason was reportedly to try and spark Miami’s struggling offense. It sort of worked as the Fish beat Boston 4-1. According to weather.com, tonight it is supposed to be in the low 80s and clear so they may leave it open. Heading into the season, a handful of hitters and pitchers were quoted as saying the ball carried much better with the roof open.

"This was a phone call that came at 5:02 [p.m. ET]," Samson said. "Larry Beinfest called and said, 'Hey, we've lost six in a row, I've got an idea. Let's open the roof and see what happens.' I said, 'What's the temperature?' and he said, 'It's going to be below 80 [degrees] at game time. It'll be 79.'

"I said, 'Are you sure?' He said, 'Yes, let's just try it. I said, 'Well, there's two calls we have to make, but let's start with the most important one.' I dialed up Jeffrey and said, 'Jeffrey, let's try something new. Read more

MLB Gambling Notes: Beckett and Johnson both in better form

06.11.2012     07:51 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Boston (Beckett) at Miami (Johnson) -105 O/U 7.5

It took a while but Boston's Josh Beckett and Miami's Josh Johnson are currently in fine form after some early season struggles. Johnson has still be one of the most unlucky starting pitchers this season with a .370 BABIP after 12 starts.

Beckett's last five starts
36.2 IP, 30 hits, 25 Ks, 5 BBs, 2.21 ERA, .227 BAA

Johnson's last six starts
39.2 IP, 37 hits, 33 Ks, 10 BBs, 2.95 ERA, .252 BAA

MLB Betting Notes: Boston's Buchholz says he is making progress

06.01.2012     07:04 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Boston (Buchholz) at Toronto (Alvarez) -125 O/U 9.5

No pitcher in baseball has had more "encouraging starts" than Boston's Clay Buchholz. After allowing two earned runs in seven innings last time out against Tampa Bay, Buchholz noted that he's felt much better of late. But while Buchholz’s last four starts were an upgrade over (4.56 ERA) April's disaster (8.69 ERA) there is still nothing to indicate that he is ready to dominate.

“I’ve been able to start trusting it again and start throwing it like I have in the past instead of trying to baby it and guide it and throw it for a strike,” the right-hander explained. “It’s been just trying to throw a fastball with a different grip right now, and that’s when it’s at its best.

“It’s the pitch it always has been Read more

Update on the current outfield situation for the Boston Red Sox. Last night, they had Adrian Gonzalez in right field while Daniel Nava played left and Marlon Byrd/Scott Podsednik (wow!) played center.

MLB Betting News and Notes: Boston (Buchholz) at Tampa Bay (Hellickson)

05.16.2012     11:15 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Boston (Buchholz) at Tampa Bay (Hellickson) -140 O/U 8.5

Nice breakdown from ESPN Stats & Info on tonight's Boston-Tampa Bay matchup. Clay Buchholz threw his first quality start of the season last time out (6.1 IP, 3 ERs vs. Cleveland) but failed to record a strikeout. He's allowed 36 earned runs and 10 home runs with a dismal 22-20 K-to-BB ratio. Yet despite being arguably the worst starter in baseball (statistically), the Red Sox are 4-3 in his starts. Hellickson remains an interesting study. His generic numbers are strong (2.95 ERA, .227 BAA) but there are some potential red flags (88.5% LOB, .228 BABIP, 5.16 FIP).

MLB Betting News: Boston's Lester tries to regain form vs. Seattle

05.14.2012     07:18 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Seattle (Vargas) at Boston (Lester) -175 O/U 9

Boston's Jon Lester has been in grind-it-out mode of late. High pitch counts and lack of command have cut short a few outings. After averaging about a strikeout per inning the previous two seasons, Lester has fanned only 28 in 42 innings.

"Just too many pitches. That was kind of a theme throughout the game," Lester said. "I took too many pitches to get guys out. And it's bad because I feel like I had great stuff."

"I've just got to keep grinding away. It sucks to say. I hate saying it. I want to win as much as everybody in this clubhouse. I've got to keep showing up and keep trying to execute pitches. That's all I can control," he said. "We've got to keep showing up and keep grinding, putting together those good at-bats and those good plans. It'll turn around for Read more

Free MLB Betting Pick: Cleveland Indians at Boston Red Sox

Submitted by Rob Veno

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Cleveland (Tomlin) at Boston (Doubront) -130 O/U 9.5
Recommendation: Boston

The currently flammable Red Sox are drawing a lot of negative attention but this particular spot seems to set up well. Cleveland has had problems all season long with left handed pitching as evidenced by the fact that SS Asdrubel Cabrera is their only hitter with a batting average above .300 against southpaws this season. As a team, the Tribe is hitting a paltry .222 in 433 at bats vs. left handers. Boston’s starter Felix Doubront has not been in good form his last couple of games but he did have a pair of quality starts prior to that going 12 innings with a 1.25 WHIP and 3.00 ERA. The main obstacle for Doubront has been pitches per inning where he’s averaging a taxing 18.9 per due mainly to the fact that he is a strikeout style pitcher (32 Ks in 32.1 IP). He’s also been solid at keeping the ball in the yard allowing just 3 home runs. Indians starter Josh Tomlin has had a nice start to the season where WHIP is concerned at 1.19, but his list of opposing lineups is rather weak. Three times thus far he’s faced the light hitting Chicago White Sox, Read more
