MLB Gambling Free Pick: Minnesota Twins at Chicago White Sox

Minnesota (Hendriks) +100 at Chicago WS (Johnson) O/U 8.5
Recommendation: Minnesota

It’s been an ugly season for the Chicago White Sox, but it’s gotten even worse here in September. Chicago is 2-15 in their last 17 games and they’ve been outscored 84-36 so far this month, including 42-7 during their current six game skid after getting swept at home by the Indians over the weekend.

And yet somehow, this team is favored tonight.  That gives us a prime opportunity to step in and bet against this sorry squad without laying any juice! The Twins certainly aren’t juggernauts, but at least they’re competitive, a modest 7-9 in their last 16 games, with six of those seven wins coming at an underdog price.  The Twins enjoyed a late game rally to come back and beat Tampa yesterday, a solid boost of positive momentum; something that matters when we’re talking about two sub .500 teams just playing out the string.

MLB Gambling Free Pick: Chicago White Sox at Detroit Tigers

Chicago WS (Axelrod) at Detroit (Porcello) -230 O/U 9.5
Recommendation: Over

The Tigers lineup is on fire right now.  Detroit has hammered out 54 runs in their last eight games, an average of six runs per contest while scoring at least four in every game.  That’s bad news for struggling ChiSox hurler Dylan Axelrod.

Axelrod is winless in his last seven starts, with a 6.23 ERA during that span.  None of his four previous career outings against the Tigers has been the least bit impressive.  No surprise here if the Tigers approach or exceed this total all by themselves tonight.

But Detroit’s Rick Porcello is an easy pitcher to fade these days; not a pitcher I’m looking to lay more than 2:1 to support.  Porcello’s last two home starts have been absolutely disastrous: 19 hits and 13 earned runs allowed in just 10.1 innings of work.  The Tigers lost those two games 14-8 and 13-3 as their opponent flew Over the Read more

NY Mets (Marcum) at Chicago WS (Danks) -130 O/U 8.5
Recommendation: Over

Going against the statistical grain somewhat with this selection but there are enough pros to outweigh the cons in this spot. The concerns would obviously be season long offensive woes for each team and severe lack of run support for each of these pitchers. New York sports a .229/.296/.374/.670 team offense slash line which ranks 27th or worst in MLB in all four categories. The White Sox line of .243/.296/.377/.673 is only slightly better. Tonight’s starting pitchers Shawn Marcum and John Danks have had season long run support of 2.43 runs per game and 2.83 respectively. While those deficiencies are acknowledged here, have to believe that the struggles of these starters combined with the venue, hot and humid weather and the home plate umpire are enough to get the needed scoreboard production. Marcum has been miserable nearly all season and especially of late where he’s posted a 7.94 ERA and 1.59 WHIP Read more

Chicago WS (Axlerod) at Minnesota (Pelfrey) -120 O/U 8.5
Recommendation: Over

Now that teams are starting to get a second crack at Chicago's Dylan Axelrod, I expect his days as a full-time starter to be numbered. In his last two starts, he saw Seattle and Toronto for a second time and the results weren't pretty. Axelrod threw 5.2 scoreless innings against the Mariners back in early April and somehow did the same two weeks ago, however, he allowed a whopping 11 base runners in 5.1 innings. Against the Blue Jays last time out, he was pounded for 8 hits and 6 runs in 4 innings. Even more alarming were the nine walks in those two outings – a clear indication teams are being patient and forcing the soft-tossing righty to come in the zone. Minnesota's Mike Pelfrey has nowhere to go but up and even though I've read some positives and he's coming off one of his best starts of the season (7 IP, 3 ERs, 7 Ks) were still talking about a very fringe American League arm. After throwing 5.1 Read more

Oakland (Parker) at Chicago WS (Sale) -120 O/U 7.5
Recommendation: Under

This may be the easiest free play write-up in history in part because we are going back to the well with another Jarrod Parker/Chris Sale under the total bet. On Sunday those faced off in Oakland with a total of 7 – both teams barely got to seven hits as the A's won 2-0. Everyone knows how dominant Sale has been but Parker has quietly returned to last year's stellar form. Over his last four starts, he has allowed only 17 hits and six earned runs in 27.1 innings to go with a 21/6 K-to-BB ratio and 1.98 ERA. Obviously Cellular Field plays a bit smaller than Oakland Coliseum, however I still see two pitchers trending in a positive direction and facing two sub-par offenses. Get this Read more

Oakland (Straily) -130 at Chicago WS (Quintana) O/U 8
Recommendation: Oakland

Oakland enters Chicago red hot having gone 16-3 over their last 19 games. They’ve won six consecutive series including their just completed two of three at Milwaukee where they outscored the Brewers 19-7. Everything is clicking right now for the A’s as evidenced by their +44 run differential (91-47) during this stretch. The offense has an outstanding .383 OBP, the starters own a 2.44 ERA and 1.01 WHIP while the bullpen has recorded 3 wins, 8 saves, 10 holds, 2.40 era and 1.11 WHIP. Oakland catches a break in this series opener since the White Sox were involved in a 5 hour 42 minute, 16 inning affair in Seattle yesterday. Aside from the extra innings and the long flight, Chicago’s bullpen is almost completely blown out for this contest. Chi Sox starter Jose Quintana has averaged a shade over 5.2 innings per outing this season and has completed seven full just once in his eleven starts. Last Read more

MLB Gambling News: White Sox-Mariners marathon kicks under bettors in the nuts

06.06.2013     06:41 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
In case you missed it, last night's Chicago-Seattle game was hilarious. For starters, no one scored a run until the 14th inning when the White Sox exploded for five runs – a feat they hadn't accomplished in a game since May 26. So up 5-0 heading into the bottom of the 14th, you'd figure this one was over. But we're talking about mid-June baseball and two crappy teams so obviously something crazy was about to take place. Sure enough, the Mariners scored a run, got a bunch of dudes on, and Kyle Seager hit a grand slam to tie the game 5-5. According to FanGraphs, the Mariners had a 0.1% (probably less) of winning after Nick Franklin flied out for the first out in that 5-run 14th. Anyway, fast forward to the 16th, the Sox plated two runs and held on for a 7-5 victory. Note that Chicago closer Addison Reed, who allowed all five runs, also pitched the 15th and 16th innings. Despite never pitching more than an inning in an appearance this season, Reed impressively struck out the side in that final frame – and probably won't throw again for Read more

Chicago WS (Danks) at Seattle (Saunders) -110 O/U 7.5
Recommendation: Under

Offensive struggles are real concerns for each of these teams right now. Chicago has scored three runs or less in 10 of its last 13 games while Seattle has totaled 17 runs over its last six contests. For the White Sox, lack of offense has been a season long issue but things were even more magnified yesterday when they had to go without their hottest hitter over the past week and a half, Paul Konerko, due to a stiff neck. He’s listed as day-to-day but figures to try and give it a go tonight. Gordon Beckham also could return to the lineup after a stint on the DL (hand injury) and a recent rehab assignment but the Sox are being very cautious with him. No matter who plays tonight, they figure to have trouble with Mariners lefty Joe Saunders who has pitched to incredible home/road splits thus far. In Safeco, Saunders owns a 3-1 record, 2.41 ERA and 1.04 WHIP while on the road he’s 0-4/9.00/2.06. His last Read more

Chicago WS (Danks) at Seattle (Saunders) -115 O/U 7.5
Recommendation: Seattle

The fact that I am throwing support Joe Saunders’ way should give you a good idea of how little confidence I have in John Danks right now. Danks of course is coming off shoulder surgery and missed an entire year. In two starts since his return, the lefty has allowed six earned runs and three home runs in 10 innings against Miami and the Cubs. His average fastball in those two outings was around 88 mph and there are rumbling that at the young age of 28, Danks will need to use his “guile” rather than “stuff” to survive at the MLB level moving forward. Saunders has that whole home/road dichotomy thing working and to a certain degree it makes sense he’s had more success at home in a more pitcher friendly environment. He’s still a sub-par American League arm in my book but if I’m going to trust him, it’ll be at Safeco against a weak-hitting lineup like the Read more

Chicago WS (Sale) at Oakland (Parker) -110 O/U 7
Recommendation: Under

Despite having a start skipped and another cut short due to rain, all indications point towards Chicago's Chris Sale being good to go for this afternoon's start in Oakland. And so long as he's close to being 100 – I doubt the White Sox would risk their prized possession – we're talking about one of the top left-handed arms in all of baseball. He faces an Oakland offense that after leading the AL in runs for the month of April (by 20) has come crashing down to earth with .235/.318/.696 splits for the month of May. Oakland's Jarrod Parker has pitched much better of late with four straight quality starts. If you look at his seasonal starts, it was tough sledding against offenses like Cleveland, Baltimore, and Detroit. But against more modest competition, he's been effective. And the reason I bring that up is today's opponent may be the weakest offense Parker has faced all season. Kansas City hasn't hit the Read more
