MLB Gambling Free Pick: Seattle Mariners at Chicago White Sox

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Seattle (Hernandez) at Chicago (Peavy) -125 O/U 7
Recommendation: Over

The White Sox have been Over machines at the Cell in recent weeks; 8-1 to the Over in their last nine tries at home.  Robin Ventura’s lineup has been crushing opposing pitching, pounding out 64 runs in those last nine at home.  Don’t expect King Felix to change the ChiSox offensive fortunes this evening.  Hernandez has been getting roughed up consistently in recent weeks, 1-3 with a 5.94 ERA in his last four trips to the hill.  He’s been bombed three times in his last five road starts and is winless with an ERA well over 4.00 in his last four starts on the south side of Chicago.

Seattle’s lineup came alive during their just concluded series at Texas, as the light hitting Mariners exploded for 31 runs in the final two games of the series, going Over the total by themselves in both contests.  They also scored 28 runs in the final five games of their previous road trip, finding offensive production much easier away from pitcher friendly Safeco Field.  Chicago starter Jake Peavy has been hammered for 13 earned runs in his Read more

MLB Betting Alert: Tampa Bay goes left-handed heavy vs. Chicago's Humber

05.29.2012     01:55 PM     Andrew Lange     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Andrew Lange

Note that Tampa Bay is slated to start eight left-handed bats vs. Chicago's Phil Humber tonight. Humber shows some pretty strong splits R vs. L this season (and for his career) as seen in the chart below. The price tag on James Shields is up to a -160 so bettors may want to look the way of Tampa's team total (4ov-111 at Pinnacle, 4ov-115 at 5Dimes).

copy_Humber_splits.JPG

Tampa Bay's projected lineup vs. Humber
1. Carlos Pena (L) .760 OPS vs. righties
2. BJ Upton (R)
3. Matt Joyce (L) 1.021 OPS vs. righties
4. Ben Zobrist (S) .797 OPS vs. righties
5. Luke Scott (L) .890 OPS vs. righties
6. Hideki Matsui (L) .840 OPS vs. righties lifetime
7. Jose Lobaton (S) No split, only 62 career at-bats
8. Drew Sutton (S) Stronger vs. lefties
9. Elliot Johnson (S) Slightly stronger vs. lefties

MLB Handicapping Notes: Chicago's Sale changes pitch selection

05.24.2012     11:29 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Some positive news on Chicago's Chris Sale who threw seven scoreless innings in last night's win over Minnesota. Sale of course came out of the gates strong with a 2.81 ERA after five starts. But his elbow flared up and it was thought that he would return to the bullpen full-time. Sale however was given a second chance under the watchful eye of pitching coach Don Cooper. One of the things they agreed on was to limit the amount of sliders Sale threw – a likely source of the elbow issues. Instead, Sale has focused his attention on a more fastball/change-up approach. Of his 97 pitches against the Twins, only 19 were sliders. The start before that, only 12 sliders out of 103 pitches. Prior to the elbow concerns, Sale was tossing sliders around 25% of the time. Sale has a lot of upside, but you still need to keep tabs on the elbow situation.

“I thought I was commanding my fastball well and threw the changeup for strikes more so then I have been,” Sale said. “A.J. (Pierzynski ) knew that and used that to our advantage Read more

Kansas City (Hochevar) at Chicago (Sale) -165 O/U 8.5
Recommendation: Over

Luke Hochevar takes the mound again tonight trying to shake off his early season woes.  Hochevar has really struggled in the 2012 campaign during his six starts he has only pitched a total of 28 innings being yanked early and often.  He really puts pressure on that Kansas City bullpen not being able to hit the 100-pitch mark or completing the 7th inning once this season.  His bloated 9.00 ERA and 1.82 WHIP are not the kind of numbers that will keep him in the starting rotation for very long.  "Right now, Hoch is in a rut, and he’s having trouble getting out of it," manager Ned Yost said. "He’s struggling with his command...his stuff is good, but he gets to a point where he starts fighting his location and balls are hitting the fat part of the plate."  On the other side of the equation we find some weird goings on with the White Sox and Chris Sale. Sale was a viable option out of the bullpen last year and transition well into the starting rotation in the early going. But his elbow flared up, he missed a start, and the Read more

MLB Gambling Notes: White Sox move Sale to bullpen, call up Axelrod

05.05.2012     08:05 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Chicago's Chris Sale, who showed a lot of (bet on) promise as a starter, is being placed back in bullpen because of what team officials are calling a "slightly tender elbow." The White Sox claim he is not hurt. The move likely eliminates any season-long workload issues and it also upgrades an at-times shaky bullpen. Dylan Axelrod will start in Sale's place Sunday against Detroit.

Cleveland (Masterson) at Chicago WS (Danks) -120 O/U 8.5
Recommendation: Over

Justin Masterson made a few adjustments prior to his last start and got better results in allowing only two runs in 8.1 innings – albeit against the soft hitting Angels. But his velocity remains down and his command is very erratic. In his last three outings, Masterson has walked 15 batters. This after walking less than two per start last season. Like Masterson, John Danks hasn't been "right" at all this season and a lack of command has been the main culprit. Danks walked only 46 batters last season and has already issued 15 in five starts including four in each of his last two outings. As a result, he's allowed three or more runs in every outing. These struggles were apparent from both pitchers in an early season meeting where the duo combined for seven earned runs, 15 hits, six walks and five strikeouts with neither pitcher lasting past the sixth inning. Unseasonably warm weather with gusty Read more

MLB Handicapping: Walks and lack of change-up hurt Chicago's Danks

05.03.2012     06:43 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Cleveland (Masterson) at Chicago WS (Danks) -120 O/U 8

Chicago's John Danks has always been a notoriously slower starter but this season has been particularly rough. His command has been very spotty (15 walks) which is uncharacteristic for a guy who issued just 46 free passes in 170 innings last season. Danks himself commented that his normally effective change-up has been off and on.

"Walks have bit me in the ass all year to this point," Danks sighed. "[It's] definitely something we're going to have to focus on, that and keeping the ball in the ballpark. It's frustrating, it sucks. It sucks to go out there and get your hat handed to you. We're all competitive, we don't want that to happen, and what are you gonna do? Try to be ready for the next one."

MLB Handicapping: Boston Red Sox feasting on average right-handed starters

04.27.2012     06:44 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Boston Red Sox are slowly hitting their way back to respectability with 43 runs, 10 homes runs, a .363 BA and 1.010 OPS over their last five games (4-1). Prior to that, they produced a more modest 4.7 runs per game, 13 home runs and a .263 BA in 13 contests (4-9). The burst of productivity however is likely tied to the level of competition. During this five-game, run-scoring bonanza they've faced nothing but mediocre, soft-tossing, right-handed starters (31 runs in 19 IP vs. Garcia, Marquis, Blackburn, Hendriks and Humber). Check out what those five games did to Boston's lefty/righty splits vs. starting pitchers.

copy_redsox_split.JPG

We'll see how they fare tonight against Chicago lefty John Danks who has a good track record against some of Boston's key bats.

Boston vs. John Danks
David Ortiz 2-for-11
Dustin Pedroia 2-for-12
Kevin Youkilis 3-for-12

MLB Handicapping: Humber makes first start following perfect game

04.26.2012     06:50 AM     Printer Friendly
We compiled the results of pitchers off a no-hitter or perfect game dating back to 2006. The results have been pretty good as only Carlos Zambrano (1.2 IP, 8 ERs) and Francisco Liriano (3 IP, 4 ERs) blew up in their next outing. Chicago’s Philip Humber, who last Saturday tossed a perfect game (96 pitches) against Seattle, is a -120 home favorite vs. Boston.

MLB Betting News: Highly touted Parker makes debut for Oakland

04.25.2012     06:58 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Chicago (Sale) -135 at Oakland (Parker) O/U 7.5

Quick breakdown of Oakland starter Jarrod Parker who came over in the Trevor Cahill deal. Parker was a former first round pick back in 2007 and had Tommy John surgery in 2010. He went 1-0 with a 2.18 ERA and 21 strikeouts in 20.3 innings for Triple-A Sacramento.

Parker has an accomplished repertoire of pitches, including a four-seam fastball in the mid 90s, and a slider that often makes batters look foolish. He made his big league debut last September and shut down the Dodgers, allowing no runs, four hits and a walk in 5 2/3 innings, though he wasn't involved in the decision.
