MLB Handicapper Free Play: Atlanta Braves at Colorado Rockies

Atlanta (Santana) -110 at Colorado (Chacin) O/U 10
Recommendation: Over

High scoring potential as the Atlanta Braves and Colorado Rockies have combined for a whopping 33 runs scored in the last two games. Ervin Santana has been inconsistent of late. He is coming off a great outing against Arizona but prior to that he was on a string of allowing 20 runs over four consecutive starts. The most concerning thing for him today is his track record against Colorado here at Coors Field. Even though it is a small sample size Santana (w/ LA) coughed up 7 runs on 9 hits in 5.2 innings including a pair of homers. Colorado has roughed up Mike Minor and Julio Teheran on back-to-back nights and I think they will score their share of runs today against Santana. Jhoulys Chacin has had more bad starts than good this season. His track record at Coors Field has been spotty with a 5.40 ERA in three home starts including an anemic 10 walks to 12 strikeouts ratio. His track record against the Braves is equally Read more

MLB Handicapping: Colorado sends rookie Matzek to the hill

06.11.2014     10:18 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Good article on Colorado Rockies rookie Tyler Matzek who will be making his MLB debut tonight against Atlanta. Matzek was a first round pick back in 2009. He's a +125 underdog against Julio Teheran.

Since 2011, Matzek has struck out 22 percent of the lefties he's faced while surrendering an OPS of just .692. Because of the walks, lefties have reached base more than 36 percent of the time against Matzek, but they've largely failed to square up anything, slugging just .330 and homering on only 3.3 percent of fly balls.

Colorado (Lyles) +100 at Philadelphia (Hernandez) O/U 8
Recommendation: Colorado

I’m always interested in supporting the better team with the better starting pitcher at an underdog price!  That’s most assuredly the case at Citizens Bank Ballpark this evening, when the Rockies and Phillies battle in Philadelphia.

Philadelphia really doesn’t have much of a home field edge these days; five games under .500 playing in Philly this year while ranked #26 out of 30 MLB teams in home profitability.  Following last night’s loss, the Phillies are now in the midst of a 2-5 skid; just 4-8 in their last dozen at home.  And the Phillies tend to keep losing off a single loss, just 3-8 in this role in eleven previous tries this season.

That stands in sharp contrast to the Rockies, who rank #7 in MLB profits for their supporters. Colorado hasn’t made many headlines this year, but this under-the-radar squad is just one game behind the Read more

NY Mets (Colon) at Colorado (Nicasio) -125 O/U 9.5
Recommendation: Colorado

The Rockies suffered a deflating loss in Arizona last night, blowing a ninth inning lead with  two outs and two strikes, wasting a scoring chance in the tenth, then losing on a walk-off home run.  But bullpen meltdowns have not been a habitual problem for this team, and normal closer LaTroy Hawkins is now rested after notching back-to-back saves earlier in the series.

Forget the starting pitching matchup for a moment.  The disparity between these two lineups is worthy of a -200 price tag, if not higher.  Colorado leads the majors in runs scored, hits, doubles, home runs, total bases, batting average, slugging percentage and OPS.  Sox of their eight position players are hitting .300 or higher, including Troy Tulowitzki, Justin Morneau and Charlie Blackmun, all hitting above .350.  D-backs manager Kirk Gibson: “They are a good-hitting ball club. They are hard to Read more

Colorado (Morales) at Arizona (Miley) -125
Recommendation: Arizona 5-inning

Going to trust what I see with my eyes where Arizona’s Wade Miley is concerned and pencil him in for a solid start here. Miley’s stuff has not been a problem through the opening month of the season but at times his location has as evidenced by his 16 walks allowed in 36 innings. On his side is the fact that Miley is a pitcher who generally stays down in the zone and on April 6th held the Rockies to just 10 total bases in eight innings which is the best performance by any opposing starter in Coors Field this year. Overall, Miley has had the Rockies number throughout his career going 7-0 against them. As is seemingly always the case, Colorado’s offense has been dramatically different on the road thus far posting a .246 BA as opposed to .347 at home, and OBP of .298 compared to .398 and an OPS difference of .664 away/.987 home. Expect Miley to control them here and rely on his offense to give him Read more

Colorado (Anderson) at San Francisco (Cain) -135 O/U 7.5
Recommendation: Over

Because of so many right-handed bats, San Francisco has really pound lefties so far this season: .289 BA, .488 SLG, and .862 OPS. In four games against southpaw starters the Giants pounded out 4, 8, 7, and 6 six runs. They face a very hittable one today in Colorado's Brett Anderson. Brett Anderson has thrown back-to-back 6 IP, 3 ER starts but his peripherals are very questionable. In 12 innings he allowed 15 hits and struck out only three batters. And of the 172 pitches he threw only six were swung on and missed. And in 39 plate appearances, righties are hitting .364/.997 vs. Anderson. Like Anderson, San Francisco's Matt Cain hasn't missed a lot of bats either with five strikeouts and 12 swinging strikes in two appearances. Overall we have two pitchers who are currently throwing to contact and with the ball having the tendency to carry a bit better during the day in AT&T Park, we'll take a look Read more

Colorado Rockies Season O/U Wins
Recommendation: Over 76.5

All of the talk in the National League West has undoubtedly centered on the Los Angeles Dodgers contending for a World Series title and the San Francisco Giants bouncing back after last year’s 76-win campaign.  The Colorado Rockies (74-88) meanwhile are lined as the worst team in the division and while there are plenty of holes, I see upside with this squad as well as value with the price. This is a .500 ball club when Troy Tulowitzki, Carlos Gonzalez, and the pitching staff are healthy.  Tulowitzki played in only 126 games last season while CarGo was even less at 110. Their starting pitchers are not the envy of most teams, but if guys like Brett Anderson can stay healthy and Juan Nicasio can pitch to his potential they will get more than their share of wins.  Nicasio has been the wildcard in their rotation for some time and with his fastball improved during spring training we could see big results. The addition of Anderson, coupled with Nicasio and Jorge De La Rosa, gives the Rockies three solid arms that while not as high profile as some of the aces in the division, Read more

Colorado (De La Rosa) +125 at Atlanta (Beachy) O/U 7.5
Recommendation: Colorado

This is an important first step for Atlanta as they ease Brandon Beachy back into their starting rotation with the thought that he fills the void left by Tim Hudson’s season ending injury last week. Beachy is coming off of Tommy John surgery and will for all intent and purposes be unrestricted in this start as his pitch limit is set at 100. That suggests at least a six inning stint unless he runs into trouble with the Colorado bats or control issues. At Triple-A Gwinnett, Beachy walked 18 batters in 30 innings which creates the possibility of an early high pitch count. Colorado is about average in plate patience (7th in NL with 298 walks) but tonight they’re likely to make a concerted effort to run up his pitch total. Atlanta’s bullpen figures to be faced with back-end fatigue tonight and getting Beachy out in four or five innings will benefit the Rockies. Colorado starter Jorge De La Rosa Read more

MLB Gambling News: Streaks abound in the National League West

07.08.2013     07:43 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The National League West has officially become a handicapping nightmare. Arizona lost eight of nine but bounced back with five straight wins. Los Angeles has crawled back into the division race having won 12 of 15. San Diego was hovering around .500 but just wrapped up a 1-9 road trip. San Francisco has lost five straight series to fall 6.5 games back of the D-Backs. And Colorado has lost six of seven and had two more players go down with injuries as Roy Oswalt left Sunday's start with a bum hamstring and Carlos Gonzalez hurt a finger.

"We have to figure it out. We are banged up, but a lot of teams are. We have to find a way to win games, that's the bottom line," Weiss said. "We have to put together better at-bats. I don't care who's pitching. You can only give credit to the pitcher so much."

"We are in a bad situation right now. We have to play better. We don't look the same. It's been a bad time. They totally played better than us," said Gonzalez, whose finger X-Ray didn't reveal a break,

MLB Handicapping: Colorado's Chatwood has been a pleasant surprise

06.27.2013     07:29 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Here’s a great example of not giving up on starting pitchers, especially those who are young and were at one time highly regarded. Tyler Chatwood was a second round pick in 2008 but struggled mightily his first two seasons at the MLB level (206.2 IP, 115 Ks, 104 BBs, 4.96 ERA). He started the year at Triple-A but since his call-up he's been Colorado's most reliable starter with a 2.22 ERA through eight starts. As always FanGraphs dives in and gives us some of the reasons behind Chatwood’s success, most notably the development of his slider. It just goes to show how quickly the betting markets can react to starting pitching success – Chatwood is a -165 home favorite tonight against the Mets.
