MLB Handicapping: Colorado's Chatwood has been a pleasant surprise

06.27.2013     07:29 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Here’s a great example of not giving up on starting pitchers, especially those who are young and were at one time highly regarded. Tyler Chatwood was a second round pick in 2008 but struggled mightily his first two seasons at the MLB level (206.2 IP, 115 Ks, 104 BBs, 4.96 ERA). He started the year at Triple-A but since his call-up he's been Colorado's most reliable starter with a 2.22 ERA through eight starts. As always FanGraphs dives in and gives us some of the reasons behind Chatwood’s success, most notably the development of his slider. It just goes to show how quickly the betting markets can react to starting pitching success – Chatwood is a -165 home favorite tonight against the Mets.

MLB Handicapping: Colorado's Roy Oswalt back on the bump

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Colorado (Oswalt) at Washington (Zimmermann) -170 O/U 7

Roy Oswalt makes his return tonight in Washington after making five starts at Double-A (33.1 IP, 2.16 ERA, 25 Ks, 7 BBs, 5 HRs). According to one report, Oswalt's fastball was "consistently at 92 mph" and got as high as 95. In another, Oswalt himself admitted he more of a "91-92" guy and no longer "94." Not sure he's got the stuff to succeed in Coors Field at this stage in his career but tonight's matchup is one he should be able to handle.

"He's always a competitive guy, a tough at-bat," Weiss said. "He's a nice piece to have. He's ready to go. His velocity is real good and throwing all his pitches. "He's done just about everything in this game, pitched in big

MLB Gambling News: Pitching helps Toronto Blue Jays crawl back to respectability

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Colorado (De La Rosa) at Toronto (Johnson) -150 O/U 9

It took them a while but over the last two weeks the Toronto Blue Jays have started to play up to their preseason expectations. They've won eight of 10 including six of seven against Texas (outscored the Rangers 38-14). During that 10-game swatch the rag-tag bunch of Mark Buehrle, Josh Johnson, Ramon Ortiz, RA Dickey, Esmil Rogers, and Chien-Ming Wang helped post a team ERA of 2.09. The team is hoping Johnson can regain some of his form – if anything to give him value on the free agent market. Note the betting market’s 20 cent move towards Johnson and the Jays for tonight’s contest against the Rockies. Overall, the Jays find themselves four games under .500 and about to embark on very difficult portion of their schedule with upcoming series against Colorado, Baltimore, Read more

Arizona (Corbin) -110 at Colorado (Garland) O/U 9.5
Recommendation: Arizona

Arizona's Patrick Corbin has been flawless this season with a 1.52 ERA and solid 41-to-17 K-to-BB ratio. He’s a young lefty arm who has seen an uptick in velocity and plays on a quality team that is not overpriced in the betting markets. It would be foolish to think Corbin isn't going to regress some (see 3.91 xFIP) but despite his success the betting markets continue to bet against this kid and as a result his value has remained. He should be north of -125 in this particular matchup yet you can get him for as cheap as -110. Colorado's Jon Garland has thrown three straight games in which he's lasted only five innings and allowed three earned runs. With 26 strikeouts in 46 innings Garland simply isn't able to fool many batters at this point in his career. There are some metrics that suggest the starting pitching matchup is close but the eye test tells me to support the premium lefty arm at a discounted price. Read more

Colorado (Nicasio) at Arizona (McCarthy) -135 O/U 9
Recommendation: Over

Arizona's Brandon McCarthy has had a rough go of it in his return after getting hit in the head with a line drive late last season. In four starts McCarthy has allowed 36 hits and 17 earned runs while posting only 11 strikeouts. No question he's been a bit on the unlucky side (.391 BABIP, 7.06 ERA vs. 4.13 xFIP) but he simply hasn't shown the type of stuff that can consistently miss bats and/or get people out. Right now, I see McCarthy's ceiling as a 5- or 6-inning, 3 or 4 earned run type of pitcher. Unlike Jorge De La Rosa and Jhoulys Chacin, Juan Nicasio has never come off as a guy who can have prolonged success at the MLB level. In 20.1 innings of work, the righty has allowed 12 runs, 12 walks, and only 12 strikeouts. And there is nothing fluky about his numbers with a .262 BABIP and nearly identical ERA (5.31) and xFIP (5.34). These two pitchers squared off last week in Coors Field with Arizona winning 5-4. MLB Gambling Trends: San Francisco Giants continue to win for Zito

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Colorado (Francis) at San Francisco (Zito) -130 O/U 7.5

On today's Sportsmemo Podcast, handicapper Rob Veno pointed out the incredible run San Francisco was on when Barry Zito is on the hill. Dating back to last season, the Giants have won 15 straight games behind Zito. Some of it had to do with the offense as San Fran averaged exactly six runs per game in those contests. But Zito was pretty damn effective with a combined ERA of 3.17 in 85 innings of work.

MLB Handicapper Free Play: San Diego Padres at Colorado Rockies

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
San Diego (Volquez) at Colorado (Chacin) -145 O/U 10.5
Recommendation: Colorado

San Diego's Edinson Volquez has one redeeming quality – he pitches in Petco Park where on occasion he can be counted on for a quality start. Outside of that, Volquez doesn't offer much upside. He's dealt with mechanical issues for over a year and it's resulted in little to no command. After getting smacked around in his first start Padres pitching coach Darren Balsley was back to the drawing board of trying to get Volquez's mechanics in order. So here we are with a mediocre pitcher struggling with his mechanics and confidence tossing in Coors Field. Colorado's Jhoulys Chacin does has upside so long as he's healthy. And when he's healthy – which he appears to be this season – he's got enough stuff to overcome Coors Field (see: 38 career starts, 4.18 ERA). The Padres have scored 13 runs in their first five games – the last two vs. Jeff Francis and Jon Garland in Coors. I think the Read more

Colorado (Nicasio) at Milwaukee (Peralta) -135 O/U 9
Recommendataion: Over

The roof will be closed at Miller Park again tonight – there’s no need to worry about the gametime temperatures hovering around the freezing mark.  And if we’re not worried about cold weather deflating production, this game has all the makings of another high scoring slugfest in a series that has already seen the first two games fly Over the total!

Colorado’s totals are still somewhat deflated following their anemic level of offensive production for most of the season last year.  But last year’s team was an injury riddled mess.  This year’s team has a healthy Troy Tulowitzki, a healthy Carlos Gonzalez and a healthy and rejuvenated Todd Helton, all three of whom were essentially non-factors for this team last year.

Rockies manager Walt Weiss, following last night’s eight run outburst: “We really had some good at-bats tonight. Read more

MLB Betting News: Rockies call up homer-prone, strikeout artist, rookie, lefty

06.27.2012     06:27 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Washington (Zimmermann) at Colorado (Cabrera)

If you are pitching in the Colorado Rockies farm system, get ready dude because your number is about to be called. The Rocks dipped into Double-A and grabbed lefty Edwar Cabrera for tonight's game vs. Washington. According to the Denver Post, Cabrera throws a "wicked change-up, a good sinker and a developing sinker." In 2011 he led the minors in strikeouts with 217; 82 in 98 IP at Double-A Tulsa in this year. Cabrera has also allowed 15 home runs because why would Colorado want to call up a guy prone to giving up the long ball for a home start? Crazy, right?

"I made it my goal to reach the big leagues this year. I was surprised when they told me. But I have been pitching with all of my heart and all of my mind to get here," said Cabrera, who will wear No.

MLB Handicapping: Oddsmakers adjust to hot temps and poor pitching at Coors

06.26.2012     08:35 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Article trying to explain the increase in run production at Coors Field. One theory is the remarkably hot and dry weather occurring in Denver. Don't tell that to Jeff Francis who pitched well last night despite it being the hottest game in Coors Field history. But despite Francis' effort, let’s not let facts get in the way – Colorado's pitching just isn't very good (5.80 ERA at home). Totals at Coors are now 22-13-2 O/U on the season. Oddsmakers have adjusted and we are now routinely seeing games lined 10 or more. Double-digits totals though are a much more modest 9-8 O/U.
