MLB Betting Alert: Bettors continue to hammer New York Yankees

05.18.2012     08:03 AM     Printer Friendly
Losers of three straight, the New York Yankees have taken a boatload of money for tonight's Interleague matchup against Cincinnati. Andy Pettitte opened around a -130 favorite with some sportsbooks now dealing over -160. Cincinnati's Bronson Arroyo is 30-23 with a 4.67 ERA lifetime vs. the American League. Free MLB Betting Pick: New York Yankees at Toronto Blue Jays

NY Yankees (Hughes) -115 at Toronto (Hutchison) O/U 9.5
Recommendation: New York

Phil Hughes' shortcoming have been so heavily publicized that despite playing for the Yankees, there would inevitably some betting value on him if and when things turned around. My enthusiasm for him remains tepid but there have been positives. On the season, Hughes has decent numbers (40 hits allowed in 36 innings with 34 strikeouts and only nine walks). The problem has been staying away from the home run ball (9). The velocity has been there and so long as he believes in his stuff (he should after back-to-back quality starts) Hughes has some upside. For the Blue Jays, rookie Drew Hutchison hasn’t shown much (5.53 ERA, 1.52 WHIP). He has struggled with his command, fallen behind in a lot of counts and been forced to throw fastballs 77% of the time. The Yankees are aging, but they still work counts, take walks, and tend to feast of mediocre pitching. Looks like a decent spot for a play on the small Read more

MLB Betting Alert: Pettitte slated to start Sunday vs. Seattle

05.11.2012     07:42 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
New York's Andy Pettitte will make his seasonal debut on Sunday against the Mariners. Pettitte made six minor league starts and allowed 14 earned runs in 27.2 innings.

“I feel like my strength is there,” Pettitte said. “My legs are under me well. (It’s) two starts in a row that I went into 90 pitches, and that’s kind of where they wanted me to get and I feel good about it. My last outing was probably my worst outing as far as how I’ve felt, as far as the feel of stuff. So it’s really hard to take a read on these minor league starts.”

MLB Betting Notes: Scouts feel that New York's Robertson is the real deal

05.07.2012     07:52 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Various baseball scouts feel that New York's David Robertson has the stuff to adequately fill Mariano Rivera's shoes. Robertson has yet to allow an earned run this season and in his last five outings (5 IP) he's walked just one batter while fanning 12.

"The one unique part about Robertson is the delivery," one American League scout said. "The baseball scientists have rated his delivery No. 1 in terms of shortest distance to the plate. Hitters have less reaction time against him, making his stuff play up."

"I would pick Robertson," a National League scout said. "Look, I like Robertson better in the eighth inning than closer but Soriano . . . He's not the pitcher with the Yankees he was with Tampa."

MLB Gambling News: Yankees lose Rivera for the season

05.04.2012     06:31 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Now don't go getting all teary eyed on us but Mariano Rivera is going to be out for a while. We know, we know, the guy is a warrior and still one of the best relievers in the game. Don't worry, the Yankees have some decent arms that can fill his spot. David Robertson hasn't given up a run all season. Rafael Soriano has closed games before. No, neither one is as trustworthy and you can bet someone is going to blow a save here in the next week or so causing the earth's crust to shift. We can't wait either.

Free MLB Betting Pick: Baltimore Orioles at New York Yankees

Baltimore (Arrieta) at NY Yankees (Nova) -170 O/U 9.5
Recommendation: Over

Baltimore’s lineup is suddenly surging, pounding out 23 runs in their last four games.  The Orioles hit Ivan Nova hard, notching ten hits against him when they faced him last month.  Nova has suffered from a reverse home/road dichotomy, with a career ERA more than a full run higher when pitching in the Bronx.  He was lit up by the Tigers in his last outing: 14 baserunners and six earned runs in just 5.1 innings of work.  There’s absolutely no reason to expect a dramatic improvement here, and Joe Girardi’s bullpen behind him is not in great shape following yesterday’s early exit from Phil Hughes.

Nova has a strong winning record (20-6) throughout his tenure as a Yankee for one reason and one reason only – loads of run support.  The numbers don’t lie: in Nova’s last 20 starts dating back to last year, the Bronx Bombers have lived up to Read more

MLB Betting News: Starting pitching now a major concern for New York Yankees

04.30.2012     01:36 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It doesn't seem too long ago that one of the New York Yankees' strengths this season was projected to be their starting pitching. Now, it may be their biggest concern – especially the back end of the rotation. CC Sabathia, Hiroki Kuroda and Ivan Nova have for the most part done their job – the Yankees are 8-4 in their starts. But beyond those three arms is where it gets interesting. Phil Hughes (7.87 ERA) is once again a disaster but lucky for him Freddy Garcia's "effort" has deflected some of the criticism. Garcia (12.51 ERA) has now been demoted to the bullpen and rookie reliever David Phelps will start on Thursday in Kansas City. Andy Pettitte is getting decent reviews while working back into shape in the minors though his ETA has been Read more

MLB Betting Preview: New York's Kuroda faces Texas' Darvish

04.24.2012     01:21 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
New York (Kuroda) at Texas (Darivsh) -140 O/U 10

Two of Japan's finest square off in Texas tonight with Hiroki Kuroda facing Yu Darvish. Kuroda has been been hit or miss with one great start against Los Angeles (8 IP, 0 ER) and two sup-par showings against Minnesota (4.1 IP, 6 ERs) and Tampa (5.2 IP, 4 ER). A few scouts question whether of not Kuroda can succeed long term coming from the NL to AL.

The book on Darvish is pretty thick considering he's made only three starts. From a raw statistical standpoint, the fact that he's walked 13 batters in 17.2 IP is a major concern. Baseball Analytics though makes the point that he may be getting squeezed by the umps.

MLB Handicapping: Pressure on New York's Hughes vs. Minnesota

04.19.2012     11:26 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Minnesota (Swarzak) at New York (Hughes) -210 O/U 9.5

Once again we see New York's Phil Hughes pitching to save his spot in the rotation with Andy Pettitte and Michael Pineda close to returning. Hughes claims that in his first two starts, he used too much of his cutter and change-up and will focus more on throwing fastballs and curveballs tonight against Minnesota. According to FanGraphs, Hughes’ velocity has been good.

"For me, I don't think he has the makeup to start," the scout said. "He is a two-inning reliever who can rear back and throw his fastball."

"He's gotten into some longer counts and has not been able to put hitters away," Joe Girardi said. "He has gotten plenty of strikeouts up, but he has also made some mistakes up. There is a fine line when you pitch up Read more
