MLB Handicapping: Struggles lead to closed door meeting for Phillies

05.11.2012     07:37 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Pegged to win the National League East and beyond, the Philadelphia Phillies find themselves four games under .500 and losers of five of their last six. The poor start prompted manager Charlie Manuel to hold a closed door meeting with the hopes of sparking a turnaround. Note that the Phillies are 2-7 against left-handed starters and face San Diego's Clayton Richard tonight.

"After I watched that game, I felt it was necessary," Manuel said. "[Tuesday] night I knew exactly what to tell them. There was a lot of things going through my mind. I knew exactly what I could tell them, what I needed to tell them. I've been wanting to talk to them for a while."

MLB Betting Update: Halladay pleased with performance vs. Mets

05.08.2012     12:14 PM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Roy Halladay responds to his drop in velocity. Halladay got the no-decision in yesterday's 5-2 loss to New York. He went seven innings, allowed five hits and two earned runs and struck out seven. The Phillies have lost four straight Halladay starts (-6.6 units).

"We made a few mechanical changes," he said. "Really, I felt good. I felt good last time. There’s times where you’re not getting behind the ball; you’re getting on the side of it. And your pitches can be a little bit flatter. That’s one of those things where you try and make adjustments. I felt like today, movement was better. I felt like a lot of things were better. Was happy with the adjustments we made. It’s tough to go out and feel like you’re doing what you need to do and still coming up a little short. I felt like the changes we made were good and like the movement was better today than it Read more

MLB Betting News: Halladay not in top form this season

05.04.2012     07:42 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
When a top-tier starter is off of his game, bettors have to be ready to pounce. Practically everyone has been aware of Tim Lincecum's struggles and those who have played against him have been rewarded. Another big name pitcher that may not be right is Philadelphia's Roy Halladay. On Wednesday, Halladay had one of the worst outings of his career, allowing eight earned runs and 12 hits against Atlanta. Following the outing, Halladay took a non-baseball related leave of absence from the team and is scheduled to return today. His next start is slated for Monday. Prior to the outing vs. Atlanta, Halladay's ERA of 1.95 made it seems as if nothing was wrong. But his strikeout numbers are down and his walks are up. There may not being anything wrong with the soon-to-be 35-year-old but he is certainly worth keeping an eye on.

“I was good, honestly,” Halladay said after the game. “I wish I had a better reason, but I don’t. It was just a lack of execution on pitches in key Read more

Philadelphia (Hamels) at Atlanta (Beachy) -125 O/U 6.5
Recommendation: Under

Last season, Atlanta's offense struggled mightedly against left-handed pitching and those numbers are starting to show up again (.238 vs. LH starters) this season despite the fact that they have yet to face a premium southpaw arm. And when it comes to "premium" in the National League names like Clayton Kershaw, Cliff Lee, and tonight's opponent, Cole Hamels, come to mind. Hamels is once again dialed in this season with a 2.73 ERA and 1.03 WHIP. For Atlanta, Brandon Beachy will look to maintain his stellar start to the season (1.05 ERA, 0.97 WHIP). Obviously those numbers can't be maintained, but his talent is hardly a fluke after posting 169 strikeouts in 141.2 innings last season. He'll face a Philadelphia offense that has really struggled to produce runs. They've picked it up of late (4.71 runs per game last 7 games) but they certainly benefited from facing some weak starting pitchers (Josh Read more

MLB Betting Notes: Roy Halladay not himself but results remain strong

04.23.2012     02:27 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Differing opinions regarding Philadelphia's Roy Halladay. Everyone knows his velocity is down but it is hard to argue with the 1.50 ERA in four starts (all quality). Some say that Doc is just reinventing himself as he approaches his 35th birthday in May.

One rival official who saw the pitcher in his third start against the Giants told me that the pitcher was “laboring more than usual . . . . really grinding.” Two who saw him Saturday night against the Padres had different opinions.

One said Halladay seemed normal, except for a slight downtick in velocity and a slightly lower release point. The other expressed more concern, saying Halladay looked “a little weathered . . . like he’s pitching late in the season after logging 180 innings.”

He is throwing 51 percent cutters, 23 percent curveballs and 16 percent splitters, all increases over the past two seasons (Halladay had thrown Read more

MLB Betting Trends: San Diego's Volquez continues 1st inning struggles

04.20.2012     06:41 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Philadelphia (Hamels) -135 at San Diego (Volquez) O/U 6

We spotted this seemingly random but noteworthy trend last season: Edison Volquez always seems to struggle in the first inning. Despite moving from Cincinnati to San Diego, Volquez is once again having difficulty getting through that first frame, allowing runs in two of his three starts. Bettors looking to take advantage can get creative with prop bets of "Will there be a run scored in the 1st inning?", "Total hits+runs+errors in 1st inning?", "Team winning after the 1st inning will be?" and "Which team will score first?".

1st inning career: 92.2 IP, 6.12 ERA, 17 HRs, .857 OPS
1st inning 2012: 3.0 IP, 4 ERs, .385 BAA, .862 OPS

Philadelphia (Worley) -115 at San Diego (Wieland) O/U 6.5
Recommendation: Philadelphia

Expect the Phils to open this weekend series strong tonight behind Vance Worley. Floundering through the first 12 games at 5-7 due to an anemic offense, Philadelphia could find this venue to their liking. With a current lineup featuring very little power, they figure to be built perfectly on offense for this park. Juan Pierre, Jimmy Rollins, Shane Victorino and Hunter Pence can all use their singles and gap style hitting along with their speed to score runs in Petco. Tonight’s opposing starter Joe Wieland was very accommodating to the Los Angeles Dodgers in his only start thus far allowing six runs on six hits (16 total bases) plus a pair of walks in just five innings of work. Wieland’s penchant for pounding the strike zone and not yet mastering anything off speed with a significant velocity differential should play into the hands of the free swinging Phillies hitters. Meanwhile, San Diego’s .179 home batting average, .298 on base percentage and .274 slugging percentage, all indicate Worley could put together another quality outing like he did Read more

MLB Gambling Update: Lincecum tries to bounce back after back-to-back stinkers

04.16.2012     06:39 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Philadelphia -115 (Halladay) at San Francisco (Lincecum) O/U 6

Article on the current state of Tim Lincecum. Lincecum (0-1, 12.91 ERA) is off of the shortest start of his career (2.1 IP, 6 runs) and squares off against Roy Halladay tonight.

"I know he's going to be pitching on his 'A' game," Lincecum said, "and it just makes me want to be on my 'A' game even more so. ...

"Eliminating all doubts in myself, that's the biggest thing I can do. Just go out there and have confidence in my stuff because you see guys time and time again (having conviction) in whatever pitch they're throwing that day.

"Whether it's 85 or 95 (mph), you've got to have commitment in it, and I think Read more

MLB Gambling Free Pick: Miami Marlins at Philadelphia Phillies

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Miami (Buehrle) -105 at Philadelphia (Blanton) O/U 8
Recommendation: Miami

The Marlins lineup is significantly more potent than the Phillies lineup without Ryan Howard and Chase Utley these days.  Philadelphia managed just two runs per game for the first week of the season prior to last night’s breakout seven run performance.  The likes of John Mayberry, Lance Nix and Freddy Galvis aren’t exactly terrifying opposing staffs.  Meanwhile, Miami’s rebuilt ‘speed and power’ lineup had scored 19 runs in their three games prior to facing Roy Halladay last night, with a significant statistical edge over the Phillies in nearly every key offensive category.

The Marlins have a significant pitching edge in this ballgame as well.  Veteran southpaw Mark Buehrle is primed for early success in the NL after dominating the AL for the last decade.  The Phillies were completely stifled by Read more
