MLB Handicapping: Toronto's pitching staff will be up against it

06.22.2012     08:27 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Update on Toronto's starting pitching situation. If the last two games were any indication, the Blue Jays are going to need to score five runs or more per game to even compete. Joel Carreno was pounded for five runs and three dingers against Milwaukee. A similar outcome from Jesse Chavez (2.2 IP, 4 ERs) prior to that. Add in fringe starter Brett Cecil and Mr. Borrowed Time Henderson Alvarez and you can see things are likely to get worse before they get better. And then there is Ricky Romero who takes the ball tonight in Philadelphia. Romero is somehow 7-1 but he too may be on borrowed time considering his strikeout, walk, BABIP, and FIP numbers all suggest upcoming struggles. Note that the Jays recently aquired Sean O’Sullivan and David Pauley.

MLB Gambling Notes: Oswalt makes first start for Texas

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Colorado (Friedrich) at Texas (Oswalt) -200 O/U 10.5

Texas' Roy Oswalt will make his seasonable debut tonight against Colorado. Oswalt threw 100 pitches in his most recent start for Triple-A Round Rock.

"I feel great," Oswalt said in a conference call Wednesday. "I feel as good as I've always felt. I don't really have any complications anywhere right now. The biggest thing is to get back going and get a few starts under your belt where you have muscle memory and feel comfortable. You can start building off that."

"I think I'm pretty close," Oswalt said. "The biggest thing down here was to build some arm strength and get back into pitching shape. You can throw a lot of bullpens and lift a lot of weights, but until you get out there and compete against hitters and get into pitching shape, you can't duplicate Read more

MLB Betting News: Braves roll the dice with Jurrjens in Fenway

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Atlanta (Jurrjens) at Boston (Lester) -185 O/U 10.5

With Brandon Beachy out for the season, the Atlanta Braves recalled Jair Jurrjens. Jurrjens was sent down in late-April after allowing 17 earned runs in 16.1 innings. His numbers in Triple-A weren't very impressive (5.27 ERA, 28 strikeouts in 56.1 innings) but manager Fredi Gonzalez insists his stay was productive.

“We asked him to improve his consistency on his [velocity], which he has,” Gonzalez said. “Strengthen the [speed difference] in his changeup and his fastball, and he’s done that. And I think he’s come up with a slider that’s got more depth on it. I’m curious to see him pitch, I really am.”

MLB Betting Notes: Upcoming opponents get second and third looks vs. Texas' Darvish

06.21.2012     12:37 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Texas' Yu Darvish was on the mark his last two starts after the Rangers juggled the rotation to get him some extended rest. The competition was weak (Houston and San Diego) but Darvish showed much better command (5 walks, 19 strikeouts and 67% strikes). FanGraphs pointed out last week that though a small sample, teams seemed much more in tune with Darivsh's offerings a second time around. There is a possibility as many as five of his next opponents will have already seen him (Detroit, Oakland, Minnesota, Seattle and LA Angels). In second looks against Seattle, Toronto, Los Angeles and Oakland, Darvish's combined numbers were: 20.1 IP, 24 hits, 18 walks, 19 strikeouts, and a 6.53 ERA.

MLB Handicapping: Without Kemp, Dodgers haven't hit a lick

06.21.2012     11:39 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
When Matt Kemp missed time in mid-May, Los Angeles was still able to produce a good amount of offense. But after returning for just two games and then placed back on the DL, the Kemp-less Dodgers have struggled mightily with the sticks. Over their last 19 games (10-9), they've averaged 3.73 runs per game and hit .233/.314/.311/.625. Even more alarming is that LA has hit only five home runs during that span – none since June 12.

MLB Gambling Update: Colorado's Tracy true to his word, pulls White after 75 pitches

06.21.2012     07:32 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

At least we know Colorado manager Jim Tracy isn't a liar. After saying he would go with a four-man rotation and cap pitch counts at 75, he pulled last night's starter Alex White at exactly 75 pitches. It was a rather easy decision with White getting pounded around (3.2 IP, 5 ERs). Jeremy Guthrie threw three scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Todd Helton's ninth inning error gave Philadelphia the win and dropped the Rockies to 25-42 and 10-21 on the highway.

MLB Betting News: Carlos Zambrano out of whack according to Guillen

06.21.2012     07:24 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Miami (Zambrano) at Boston (Matusaka) -135 O/U 10.5

For as long as we can remember, there has been Good Carlos Zambrano and Bad Carlos Zambrano. Good Carlos had a 1.86 ERA in mid-June. Bad Carlos got smacked around for 11 earned runs in back-to-back starts. Based on Miami manager Ozzie Guillen's recent quote, bettors would be wise to expect some more Bad Carlos tonight in Boston.

"Carlos right now is a little out of whack," Guillen said. "He's flying out. His mechanics are very bad. His sinker is moving away too long. You cannot get behind people (in the count) all the time. With you and pitching, it's not about how hard you throw. It's about location and what you want to do on the pitching mound."

It has now become officially impossible to bet on the Colorado Rockies

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
This has a great chance of not working out.

In what amounts to an overhaul of his pitching staff, Tracy first said Colorado would send the struggling Jeremy Guthrie to the bullpen (OK, so far pretty normal), and that instead of replacing him in the rotation, the Rockies would go with a four-man rotation, with each starter limited to 75 pitches per start -- what!?!

“We have two rookies in the rotation, so you have to be very careful,” Tracy said. “You can’t just throw them loose on three days’ rest.”

“We had to do something that was unconventional,” Tracy said.

MLB Betting News: White Sox decide to cart Floyd out for another start

06.20.2012     07:40 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Chicago Cubs (Wells) at Chicago WS (Floyd) -175 O/U 10

The Chicago White Sox are apparently going to give Gavin Floyd another chance. Floyd has a 10.38 ERA over his last six starts and hasn't had a quality outing since May 11. According to well-respected pitching coach Don Cooper, Floyd's problems stem from a lack of command.

"It's not about stuff. Everyone in the league has stuff," Cooper said by phone from Los Angeles where the White Sox play the Dodgers Friday night on Comcast SportsNet. "You've got to command it more. You've got to pitch, and he's not commanding at the level he needs to command to put himself in a better position to win the game. That's what it comes down to."

"He's got enough fastball. He's got enough curve ball. He's got a major league slider, a major league changeup," Read more

MLB Gambling Notes: The list of starting pitcher injuries is comically long

06.20.2012     07:24 AM     Printer Friendly
We’ve never really tracked starting pitching injuries league-wide but it seems like there are an awful lot of guys currently on the shelf. This is just a rough estimate, but close to 33% of the league’s starting pitchers are hurt – everything from a skipped start to out for the season.
