MLB Betting Preview: New York Mets at Houston Astros

Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
NY Mets (Niese) -130 at Houston (Happ) O/U 8
Recommendation: New York

Houston took Game 1 of this series last night, turning five hits and two walks into four runs thanks to some solid clutch hitting. Don’t expect an Astros lineup that has produced three runs or less in half of their ten home games so far this season to have much success tonight against under-rated Mets hurler Jonathan Niese.  The Astros are just 1-4 against lefties in five tries in 2012, hitting just .227 as a team against southpaws.

Niese has thrown four consecutive quality starts to open up the new campaign.  He dominated the Astros on his last visit to Houston, throwing seven innings of one run ball.  It was the exact same story in his previous start here at Minute Maid Park: seven innings of one run ball.  The Mets were huge profit makers on the highway last year, earning an MLB best 17.6 units of profit for their 81 road games.  And when we look at the profitability Read more

MLB Gambling Notes: San Francisco Giants and New York Mets go with spot starters

04.27.2012     07:06 AM     Printer Friendly
The New York Mets and San Francisco Giants are slated to send a pair of newbies to the hill today. Here is a quick breakdown of who they are:

New York's Chris Schwinden (Righty)
Filling in for an injured Mike Pelfrey...Made four starts last season (21 IP, 17 Ks, 6 BBs, 4.71 ERA)...22nd round draft pick in 2008...3.95 ERA and a 134/48 K/BB in 146 innings for Triple-A in 2011...Average velocity (86-90).

San Francisco's Eric Hacker (Righty)
4-0 with a 2.19 ERA in Triple-A this season...Made a few relief appearances for Pittsburgh in 2009 and Minnesota last season...Has never started an MLB game...Already had both elbow and shoulder surgeries...23rd round pick in 2002.

MLB Handicapping: Miami's Johnson tries to get things right

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Miami (Johnson) -115 at New York O/U 6.5

Good article on the early season struggles for Miami's Josh Johnson. His batting average against currently sits at .400 with a BABIP of .452. Both stats should be considered somewhat unlucky even with the dip in velocity. He's also struggled against lefties, inducing just two swinging strikes in 95 pitches. Then there is the issue of Johnson favoring his change-up over the curveball while he continues to mend from last year's shoulder issues.

MLB Gambling News: Scout impressed with New York's Santana, Pelfrey

04.20.2012     07:30 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
One scout had positive things to say about New York's Johan Santana despite getting hit around in his last start. The scout later went on to praise Mike Pelfrey and his new mechanics.

“I was very encouraged with what I saw from Santana,” the scout said, referring to approach, of course, not results.

“He looked the same as he did two years ago. His velocity was fine, his mechanics were good. It didn’t look like he was favoring anything. There were some seeing-eye hits, and the defense. He looked pretty good to me.”

“Pelfrey looks good with his new mechanics,” the scout said. “Not only does that give him velocity, but it gives him some deception.”

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Philadelphia posted 102 wins during the regular season last year; best in majors by five games over the New York Yankees, six over Milwaukee. Yet the Phillies were STILL only fifth in MLB profits – 75% of which came on the road: 52 home wins only +3.41 units.  30-14 vs. southpaws was the best winning percentage in baseball.

Washington won 80 games last year yet only one unit of profit behind Philadelphia.  Not likely this year – the betting markets love this team!  The Nationals have started talking about a new subject during the offseason and spring training – the playoffs.

New York was awful at Citi Field (34-47 almost -19 units in 81 games) and decided moving in the fences would give them some sort of advantage – that other teams won’t have?  They were however 43-38 on road +17.5 units.   92 OVERS were the most in the MLB in 2012. The bullpen was 28th in ERA and batting average against. Wilpon’s have no money – had to give it all to Bernie Madoff victims.  $162 million – Picard had originally sued Wilpon and Katz.

Atlanta posted 89 wins compared to Mets’ 77 yet Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Play: New York Mets at San Diego Padres

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
NY Mets (Gee) at San Diego (Latos) -145 O/U 6.5
Recommendation: San Diego

The Mets and Padres finish their three-game set today in the sunshine of Petco Park.  San Diego starter Mat Latos is very quietly pitching his best baseball of the season.  Over his last three starts he’s allowed a total of just five earned runs.  In addition, the strikeouts and command are there, with an 18-2 strikeout-to-walk ratio.  Keep in mind Latos fought a sore shoulder to start the campaign, which seemed to sap some of his effectiveness. Against a weakened Mets lineup sans Jose Reyes and Daniel Murphy, Latos should boast another strong outing today.  Meanwhile, Dillon Gee will start for the Mets.  Gee doesn’t have near the sizzling stuff of Latos.  He sports a healthy 10-4 record but the youngster could be wearing down after allowing 15 runs, five home runs and a 15-11 strikeout-to-walk ratio over his last four starts.  With San Diego’s lineup hitting as well as Read more

MLB Betting Notes: Wang returns for Nats after two-year absence

07.29.2011     06:39 AM     Printer Friendly
New York (Gee) -115 at Washington (Wang) O/U 9

Have arm will travel. Chien-Ming Wang makes his MLB return after the Washington Nationals took a shot and signed the 31-year-old last season. Wang last pitched in the majors back in 2009 for the Yankees before being shutdown due to shoulder problems. He made six rehab starts with a 3.14 ERA, 17 Ks, 4 BBs in 29 innings. Nationals’ manager Davey Johnson said he'll be on an 80-90 pitch count tonight against New York.

“His first start up here after a couple years, he’s going to be a little more hyped,” Johnson said. “It’s going to take some more out of him.”

“Rather than rearrange everything, he’ll be kind of insurance,” Johnson said. “The almighty trading deadline is coming. We may do something there. Read more

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
NY Mets (Pelfrey) at LA Dodgers (Lilly) -125 O/U 7.5
Recommendation: Over

The Mets were no-hit for five innings yesterday and then pounded out five runs in the final four frames. Manager Terry Collins: “That’s the only way we’ve played. Guys have just stepped up.” New York has now scored 59 runs in its last six road games. They’ve been hammering lefties like LA’s Ted Lilly; hitting .331 against southpaws in their last ten games and .32 points higher against opposing lefties than opposing righties on the highway for the season.

Meanwhile, Lilly had his start pushed back a day because of an aching elbow. Based on this quote, don’t expect that extra day’s rest to be a difference maker here. Lilly: “It’s been off and on for a while, but I don’t think (my elbow is) necessarily why I haven’t been pitching well. Some of it is location. It all goes together because you don’t have the normal feel of your pitches.” Lilly Read more

MLB Handicapping: Citi Field could impact Yankees' long ball offense

07.01.2011     12:25 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Fantastic article from the Wall Street Journal analyzing the Subway Series and the difference between Citi Field and Yankee Stadium in terms of home runs. The study (see chart below) took seven Yankees and determined that of the 242 home runs the group hit in new Yankees Stadium, only 120 would have left the yard at Citi Field. Something to consider for this weekend’s three-game set with much of the Yankees' offense generated via the long ball.

"If you try to hit home runs at Citi Field, a lot of them are going to be flyouts and your average is going to go down, and you're not going to be that effective," outfielder Scott Hairston said. "You really have to battle yourself to stay within yourself and hit line Read more

New York (Niese) at Milwaukee (Gallardo)
Recommendation: Milwaukee Run-Line -1.5 +130

We’re on a nice profit-producing 4-0 MLB run this week and chipped-in a free Fairway forecast yesterday with another plus price run line winner on the San Francisco Giants.

Today we have a solid situation to support a hot and focused team in the American League that should produce a solid win. That 20* Big Drive play is available for purchase at Sportsmemo.com.

For our free selection, let’s chip-in another run-line play today in support of the Milwaukee Brewers (35-27) and their staff ace Yovani Gallardo. The Brewers are just 1.5 games behind the Cardinals in the NL Central and playing the best ball in the National League going 7-3 their last 10 games. The Brewers also happen to have the best home record in the National League at 22-8, as Miller Park ranks as the top hit-producing ballpark in the National Read more
