Despite the American League Central being watered down the last few years, the White Sox went 98-118 vs. the division from 2009-11.

"That has been one of our big weaknesses, getting our butts kicked in our division," left-handed reliever Matt Thornton said. "Without a doubt, you have to be better than.500 in your division or you're shooting yourself in the foot."

Despite not having a true ace, the White Sox feel the depth of their rotation is as good as any.

Chicago (Buehrle) -120 at Baltimore (Tillman) O/U 8.5
Recommendation: Under

The White Sox and Orioles wrap-up their three-game set tonight in Camden Yards. The best getaway day pitcher in the business will take the mound for the White Sox. Mark Buehrle has been in fine form for the Sox with seven-straight quality starts, while allowing a total of just nine earned runs in those seven starts. With his ability to work quickly and efficiently, the southpaw should carve through the Orioles lineup. Meanwhile, young Chris Tillman will toe the rubber for the Orioles. Tillman has faced his difficulties at the major league level, while showing a 4.85 ERA on the season. It felt like the Orioles rushed the right-hander in previous editions as he was just a raw, young thrower. He started 12 games in 2009 and another 11 games in 2010. Keep in mind, Tillman is still just 23-years-old and it feels that during his work in the minor leagues he’s figured some things out. In two outings since his most recent call up Read more

Chicago (Humber) -120 at Baltimore (Hunter) O/U 8.5
Recommendation: Chicago

Baltimore’s Tommy Hunter won 13 games for the Rangers last year, but he was a non-factor in limited time out of the bullpen this year and Texas was more than willing to dump him at the trading deadline. Hunter got absolutely lit up in his first start for Baltimore; pulled after four ineffective innings in Toronto. There’s no reason to expect this start to be any better.

The Orioles are really struggling these days, headed for another last place finish – just we’re they’ve been in every recent season. They’ve won only one game in five tries on their current homestand; just 3-11 at any venue over the last two weeks and 7-16 in their last 23 at Camden Yards. A team that has gone 0-10-2 in their last dozen series is an easy team to fade in this price range!

Meanwhile, the Pale Hose are surging, Read more

MLB Betting Notes: Floyd bounces back strong after poor outings

Chicago (Floyd) -125 at Baltimore (Reyes) O/U 9

Teddy Covers pointed out to us Chicago White Sox starter Gavin Floyd's trend of bouncing back strong after poor outings (see chart below). Floyd has allowed five or more earned runs six times but in the following start he's been lights out with a 1.51 ERA in 35.2 IP. Also note that Floyd, a native of Maryland, sports a 1.71 ERA in three career starts at Camden Yards.

New York (Burnett) at Chicago (Floyd) +100 O/U 9
Recommendation: Chicago

I'll back the White Sox with Gavin Floyd on the mound today as they try to avoid a sweep by the Yankees. Despite being just 52-56 on the season, the White Sox are still in the AL Central race; just 5.5 games out of first place. Floyd has decent marks for the season, but has really turned it on of late. In his last three starts he has allowed just two earned runs in 22.1 innings, with 16 strikeouts and a minuscule 16 base runners. Historically, he’s been up to the task against the Yankees with four straight quality starts including an 8-inning, 2-earned run, 10-strikeout performance in New York back in April. Chicago's offense continues to struggle, especially with Paul Konerko out of the lineup, but they should put up some runs against an inconsistent AJ Burnett. Burnett has allowed four or more runs in five of his last 10 starts. He’s also had just two quality starts on the road this year in eight tries.

Chicago (Floyd) at Cleveland (Carrasco) -105 O/U 8.5
Recommendation: Cleveland

Too much of a favorable matchup not to take a look at Cleveland and the cheap price tonight against Chicago. Carlos Carrasco has cooled off of late but a closer look shows his numbers were hurt by just two innings. Against Toronto and New York, he allowed two five-run innings, but beyond that, he's been extremely effective. The key for tonight is that Carrasco has done a fabulous job against righties (.211 BAA, .562 OPS) which bodes well with Paul Konerko and Carlos Quentin producing nearly all of Chicago's offense this season. Gavin Floyd has been up and down and shows much weaker splits against lefties (.281 BAA, .767 OPS). Even with Sizemore and Choo out, the Indians can put as many as six lefties in their lineup. Despite a return to earth, Cleveland is still a solid 27-18 at home which makes tonight's pick 'em price worth a bet.

MLB Betting Notes: Peavy's struggles tied to dip in velocity

07.19.2011     02:45 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Chicago (Peavy) -110 at Kansas City (Duffy) O/U 8.5

Velocity of lack thereof seems to be the best way to handicap Chicago's Jake Peavy these days. Based on his FanGraphs chart, when Peavy's fastball is above 90 MPH, he has success, when it isn't he struggles. Notice the spike in velocity came in his relief appearance back on June 25 against Washington – 4 IP, 0 ER, 7 Ks, 0 BBs. Since then however, he's allowed 14 earned runs over his last 16.1 innings with a mediocre 10-6 K-to-BB ratio. His last start back on July 10, he was pounded for 10 hits and five earned runs against light hitting Minnesota (his lowest fastball MPH average to date). Peavy was honest that he was less than 100% leading up to the All-Star break. The White Sox pushed back his start until tonight, giving the veteran right-hander eight full days of rest. Assuming his struggles are as a result of fatigue rather than injury, we would expect a good showing tonight in Kansas City though perhaps a Read more

Washington (Zimmermann) +105 at Chicago (Jackson) O/U 8
Recommendation: Washington

The Washington Nationals are still the hottest team in baseball, even without Jim Riggleman in the dugout. Despite Riggleman’s shocking resignation yesterday, the Nats are poised to win for the 12th time in 13 games as they travel to Chicago tonight. Outfielder Jason Werth, talking about Riggleman’s departure: “It’s not going to change anything in here. We’re the ones that have been winning the ballgames, so we’re going to keep going.”

The Nats have an excellent chance to continue their winning ways tonight with Jordan Zimmermann on the hill. Zimmermann is 3-0 with a 1.32 ERA in his last four starts. He’s thrown nine consecutive quality starts, showing that he’s fully recovered from the Tommy John surgery that threatened to derail his career two years ago. The Nationals are 6-3 in those last nine starts, and two of the losses came by identical 2-1 scores Read more

Chicago White Sox at Arizona Diamondbacks
Recommendation: Chicago +115 Series Price

White Sox starting pitching is on a roll right now having thrown eight quality starts in their last nine games. The rotation has recorded a 2.69 ERA and 1.12 WHIP during this stretch. More importantly, Chicago’s trio of starter’s for this series (Edwin Jackson, John Danks, and Philip Humber) have combined for a 2.16 ERA and 1.15 WHIP in six starts since June 4th. Opponents have accumulated just 48 total bases in the last 41.6 IP by this threesome and Arizona’s offense tends to live and die by extra base hits. The Diamondbacks sticks have cooled off dramatically at home this month scoring 27 runs in eight games for an average of 3.38 per contest. Their bullpen has also been a concern here in June as indicated by their 5.44 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 18.97 PPI. They also figure to be without their top pair of relievers JJ Putz and David Hernandez for tonight’s contest since Putz pitched the past two nights Read more

Chicago (Buehrle) -110 at Minnesota (Blackburn) O/U 8
Recommendation: Under

Getaway baseball with Mark Buehrle on the hill typically grabs my attention. A total of 8 in Target Field does as well. Buehrle has been his old consistent self of late, allowing 2-3 earned runs and tossing 6-7 innings virtually every outing (eight straight quality starts). He made two starts at Target Field last season and had little trouble, allowing just three earned runs in 15 innings of work. He'll face a Minnesota lineup that last night looked like a Triple-A team. I respect how creative the Twins have gotten offensively – hit and runs, bunting, aggressive on the base paths. They stole six bases last night which played a big role in them scoring four runs. That likely won't happen today with Buehrle on the hill; he's allowed only two this season. Nick Blackburn has been in solid form as well, allowing more than two earned runs just one in his last eight starts. He understands how to pitch in Target Field with a 2.97 Read more
