MLB Betting News: Decline in scoring attributed to umpires

03.06.2012     01:15 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Article from baseballanalytics.org on perhaps the real reasoning for the decline in offense across the board in MLB. The “disappearance” of steroids is what most point to as the source but one study shows that umpires may be the main culprits. It turns out the over the last four seasons, umps are calling more and more strikes – almost as if they are carrying out what it clearly states in the rule book.

In 2008, umpires called a strike 74.5% of the time that a hitter took a pitch that was thrown within the strike zone. By 2011, that called strike rate on pitches taken in the zone was over six percent higher as compared to '08:

Baseball Gambling News: Playoffs expanded to 10 teams

03.02.2012     02:01 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Major League Baseball made the decision to expand the playoffs from eight to 10 teams. For bettors this of course means more games which is never a bad thing. Check out the confident quote from Houston GM Jeff Luhnow regarding the change. Why not be excited, your teams' chances to make the postseason just skyrocketed to 1.94%!

"I hope we get that extra spot," said new Houston Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow, whose team is coming off a 56-106 finish that was the worst in the majors. "I think it's great any time you have more markets involved."

For the 2012 postseason, the five-game Division Series will begin with two home games for lower seeds, followed by home games for the higher seed. After that, it will return to the 2-2-1 format previously used.

MLB Handicapping: Helpful publications for bettors

02.21.2012     12:24 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The MLB season is right around the corner and on cue, Baseball Prospectus released its 2012 annual (only $15). The information can at times be overwhelming but it still remains a must have for bettors. Another good tool is Baseball America's Prospect Handbook. You won’t find more accurate analysis on up-and-coming players. Nice to have late in the season when you see “0-0, 0.00 ERA” on the betting card.
