Bettors don't care that Cubs haven't won title since Teddy Roosevelt was in office

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Based on the fair amount of betting attention, one would think Theo Epstein threw a 94 mph cutter and hit 48 home runs. Las Vegas gamblers have recently been placing bets buying lotto tickets on the Chicago Cubs (40-1 odds at Hilton) to snap their 103-year World Series-less run.

“The Cubs usually represent about 10-12% of the money wagered in the Future pool,” Rood said.

"Slightly," wrote Jay Rood, Vice President of Race and Sports at the MGM Resorts, in an email. "It might have been 40-1 before."

“I would have to say of the ‘underperforming’ teams, the Cubs are No. 1 at the wagering windows,” Kornegay wrote in an email.

Gambler hedged bet but still cashed big on St. Louis Cardinals

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Update of the savvy bettor who cashed in on the St. Louis Cardinals to win the National League championship as well as the World Series as Las Vegas’ MGM Casino. All told, he took home $275K (he reportedly hedged on the Rangers). We don't know the exact details because wisely, the gambler has chosen to remain anonymous.

Bettor needs two-game sweep from Cardinals to cash big ticket

10.25.2011     09:11 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Update on the bettor who put down $250 at 500-1 odds on the Cardinals to win the National League title and another $250 at 999-1 odds on them to win the World Series. The gentleman already cashed $125K but will need a two-game sweep as Texas leads the series 3-2. According to MGM oddsmaker Jay Rood, the bettor wanted to put even more money down but Rood put a cap on the bet in order to limit the potential damage. Rood noted that back in the 1987, the Minnesota Twins were at one point during the regular season 500-1 to win it all.

"If you calculate it all out, the true odds for something like this to happen is 10,000/1," he said.

"Looking back, I would've been a little more cautious about it," Rood said.

Bettor sitting on a monster payout if Cardinals win World Series

Spotted this article at Deadpsin. How excited was this dude during the commercial break after the eighth inning of last night's St. Louis-Texas game? How not excited was this dude when Cardinals reliever Jason Motte couldn't record an out in the ninth? Regardless, any one of us would love to be holding that ticket right now.

2011 World Series Betting Preview St. Louis Cardinals vs. Texas Rangers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The World Series begins tonight in St. Louis and the Texas Rangers are a -155 favorite to take home the crown. The Cardinals have home field advantage and both teams enter playing solid baseball throughout the playoffs. However, note that the Cardinals (5.43 ERA) and Rangers (5.62) starting rotations have not pitched particularly well. They do however feature reliable bullpens that can deliver plenty of innings. The Cardinals bullpen has posted a very solid 2.55 ERA and a stellar .177 opponents BAA this postseason while the Rangers relief corps has been equal to the task with a 2.34 ERA and .193 BAA.

Both teams feature solid and deep lineups 1 through 7 in the batting order, and the ‘overs’ may be of more interest when the series returns to Texas with less quality starters pitching at a hitter friendly park. Rangers Ballpark in Arlington surrendering the most runs scored, home runs and third most hits in all of baseball.

From a betting perspective, here is some information on the last 12 World Series. Totals are 23-37 O/U the past 60 World Series games, so pitching has been the predominant force. Games 4 and 5 have been the best games for hitting and Read more

Politicians of Missouri and Wisconsin get to drink crappy beer if their team wins

10.12.2011     02:43 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
They say if you’re not betting money they you really aren't betting. But what about when the outcome of a wager is decided by beer? Maintaining the recent trend of state politicians betting against one another on sporting events, the Cardinals-Brewers series just got serious with a case of Bud Light and Miller High Life riding on the outcome.

"There is no doubt that the Brewers will win the next three games, but I need to call Brewers Manager Ron Roenicke right away and tell him just how dire this situation is," Rep. Moore said. "I am loathe to purchase Budweiser. The only beer I ever buy or drink is High Life."

"The Cardinals are on a roll; Albert is awesome; Chris Carpenter is warming up; and the Rally Squirrel is ready, said Congressman Clay. And I am surprised to learn that they actually brew beer in Milwaukee!"

MLB Handicapping: Playoff races come down to the final day

09.28.2011     06:24 AM     Printer Friendly
Usually the final day of the regular season is an afterthought but this year bettors are treated to multiple games involving postseason implications. Here is a link explaining all of today's situations.

The AL Wild Card remains a deadlock between the Red Sox and the Rays for a second day, with the AL East foes holding identical 90-71 records after Boston won at Baltimore and Tampa Bay beat New York on Tuesday. Tampa Bay earned home field for the potential Thursday tiebreaker by winning the season series between the two clubs, 12-6. The Yankees can't play either one of their division foes in the Division Series, so that means the No. 2 seed will draw the Wild Card -- but we still don't know the No. 2 seed in the AL.

MLB Handicapper Free Play: Baltimore Orioles at Detroit Tigers

Baltimore (Britton) +130 at Detroit (Turner) O/U 9
Recommendation: Baltimore

The betting markets are simply too hot on the Tigers these days.  Detroit has won 15 of their last 18 overall and 25 of their last 32, including last night’s come-from behind win at Kansas City.  But don’t expect maximum intensity from the Tigers on their final homestand of the season following their latest successful road trip.  Manager Jim Leyland brought Doug Fister in for a relief role last night, looking to set up his rotation for the playoffs already. “We have to get everything lined up for the playoffs.”  Slugger Miguel Cabrera echoed that sentiment: “It’s going to be nice going home and getting ready for the playoffs.”  This team is, quite simply, not fully focused on tonight’s affair.

Meanwhile, the Orioles are playing inspired baseball down the stretch.  In the last two weeks, they’ve beaten the Yankees twice, the Rays twice, the Angels twice and the Red Sox three times.  Baltimore has a 7-2 mark in its last nine games, cashing as a big underdog in Read more
