Cleveland pitching makes monster jump in 2011

05.16.2011     09:26 AM     Printer Friendly
Good article on Cleveland's success on the mound and the impact of pitching coach Tim Belcher. The Indians boast the youngest pitching staff in baseball (26.3 years old avg.).

"Guys with great stuff, when they get ahead 0-1, 0-2, it's easy to put guys away," Tomlin said. "With me, I have to (get ahead) because I'm not overpowering at all. I try to pitch to early contact as much as I can. You look at the averages, guys who are hitting 1-0 or 0-1 pitches, it's got to be two or three hundred points difference."

MLB Handicapping: Updated American and National League run differentials

05.16.2011     07:28 AM     Printer Friendly
An up-to-date breakdown of both American and National League run differentials. Also listed is each team's "Luck" which is the difference between the actual W-L and Pythagorean W-L. For example, based on Atlanta's runs scored and allowed (+41); its actual record is three wins below expectation. The opposite is true for San Francisco who because of its -2 run differential has a Pythagorean W-L record under .500. Note that Minnesota's -90 is already below last season's total mark for the Washington Nationals (69-93, -87 runs).

Pete Rose says he wants to manage again

05.16.2011     06:31 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Hit King wants back! At a banquet this past weekend, Pete Rose told reporters that he would like to manage again. Ironically, the judge who sent him to prison back in 1990 for failing to report his earnings from gambling was one of the guests in the audience.

"I want to be a manager, that's the only role," said Rose, who turned 70 on April 14. "But I'm running out of time. I want to teach young players."

"It's a like a singer getting caught running a red light and not being able to sing again," Rose said. "That's not America. I'm a baseball player. I can go on every talk show and say I'm sorry and some people don't want to hear you. That's not fair."

MLB Bullpen Report: Shaky pen holding Baltimore back

05.13.2011     02:31 PM     Rob Veno     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
This weekend’s upcoming series between Baltimore and Tampa Bay sees a significant advantage for the Rays bullpen. This Orioles relief corps has leaked like a sieve all season long allowing at least one earned run in 32 of their 39 appearances. They’ve allowed 214 total bases which amazingly is 39 more than any other team baseball at this early juncture of the season. Of the 12 save opportunities Baltimore relievers have had, they’ve blown five (41.6%). The bullpen WHIP ranks 25th in MLB at 1.44, they are 26th in walks having yielded 57, the ERA is 27th at 4.92 and the 23 home runs along with .459 slugging percentage allowed are each 30th out of 30 teams.  With a staff full of young starters who have only lasted seven innings or more six times in 36 games, the bullpen is constantly asked to go three innings or more. The wear and tear will only get greater if the O’s starting staff doesn’t mix in a few more outings where they deliver seven innings or more.

MLB Betting Stock Watch: Arm trouble make Blanton a candidate to fade

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Sell Joe Blanton – Blanton gets the dubious distinction of being the fifth wheel on the all-world Phillies pitching staff. He’s certainly good enough to hold down the fifth spot in the rotation when healthy but that is exactly my concern. Blanton is currently troubled by a mysterious elbow ailment that has left him with marginal stuff. He’s already spent time on the DL trying to rest the elbow but in his return, it is clear things aren’t right. Against the Marlins on May 9, Blanton allowed three runs in five innings and was hit hard for eight hits. After the game he stated his elbow was still bothering him but he would stick it out – despite a 2-3 MPH drop in velocity.  In addition, he recently had a spat with pitching coach Rick Dubee over his mechanics. Blanton was looking to correct a mechanical flaw, but Dubee argued that his mechanics were fine. The Phillies continue to fly high, but with all their success there’s a good chance we’ll find some value Read more

MLB Free Play: San Diego at Colorado Under 4.5 Five-Inning Line

San Diego (Moseley) at Colorado (De La Rosa)
Recommendation: Under 4.5 five-inning line

These National League West opponents begin a three-game set with a pair of starting pitchers who have posted very strong situational numbers. For San Diego, right hander Dustin Moseley has been tremendous on the road throwing three quality starts in three outings. He has a 0.46 road ERA along with a 1.02 WHIP and all three games have gone under the total. Rockies southpaw Jorge De La Rosa has been dominant thus far at home tossing 12.2 innings with a 0.81 WHIP and 1.46 ERA. Last season against the Padres, De La Rosa recorded a whopping 5:1 K-BB ratio, held them to a .209 BA and had a 0.97 WHIP. San Diego’s entire position player roster has 76 combined at-bats versus De La Rosa and only seven RBI. Also in De La Rosa’s favor tonight could be the fact that San Diego has scored one run or less in five of Moseley’s seven starts this year. Also note that Colorado’s offense has been dismal by Coors Read more

MLB Betting Stock Watch: Mechanical adjustment has Morton on the rise

05.13.2011     12:11 PM     ER Sports     Printer Friendly
Submitted by ER Sports

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Buy Charlie Morton – Morton has always had a ton of potential. Scouts have drooled over his hard moving raw stuff ever since he was drafted by the Braves in the third round back in 2002. However, living up to that potential has at times proved difficult for the young righty. The Braves eventually grew frustrated (74.2 IP, 6.15 ERA) and shipped him to Pittsburgh in the Nate McLouth deal back in 2009.

Morton was a mixed bag following the trade with a 4.55 ERA in 18 starts. The next year he lost all confidence after going 2-12 with a 7.55 ERA. But this spring Morton fought back and worked hard to rebuild his mechanics. He lowered his arm slot in order to create a two-seam sinking fastball. The changes have worked wonders with his sinker resulting in nearly a 4:1 ground ball-to-fly ball ratio.

One could certainly argue that Morton hasn’t missed enough bats (46 IP, 24 Ks) to sustain his early season success. But by inducing that many ground balls, he’s able to create easy outs and Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Play: New York Mets at Houston Astros

New York (Gee) at Houston (Norris) -108 O/U 7.5
Recommendation: Houston

Tonight in Houston, the Mets will send swing starter Dillon Gee to the hill in the series opener against the Astros. Gee features limited upside and stuff, relying more on control to survive.  Last season with the Mets and he fanned just 17 batters in 33 frames.  He’s shuttered between the bullpen and starting this season and will now get a full-time look with Chris Young on the DL.  The Astros weaker hitting team can plate runs against a pitcher like Gee who doesn’t have the repertoire to overwhelm. Meanwhile, Bud Norris will toe the rubber for the Astros.  Norris is a pitcher that knows how to miss bats and possesses strong upside.  His strikeout rate actually ranks on par with some of the premier pitchers in baseball.  This season the 26-year-old has fanned 52 batters in 42 innings or work, after striking out a batter per inning last year.  Norris can bring the heat with a Read more

Verlander makes first start following no-hitter

05.13.2011     08:35 AM     Printer Friendly
Justin Verlander is slated to make his first start since tossing a no-hitter against Toronto last Saturday. We compiled the results of pitchers off a no-hitter or perfect game dating back to 2006. The result by and large were pretty good as only Carlos Zambrano (1.2 IP, 8 ERs) and Francisco Liriano (3 IP, 4 ERs) blew up in their next outing. Six of the 16 pitchers recorded quality starts, including Verlander following his 2007 no-hitter. Clay Buchholz's next appearance actually came out of the bullpen hence the three innings. Verlander is a -178 home favorite against Kansas City tonight.

Bettors continue to get burned by Ubaldo Jimenez

05.13.2011     07:06 AM     Printer Friendly
Another rough outing by Ubaldo Jimenez last night as he lasted just 3.2 innings, allowed five earned runs and walked six against the Mets. Of his 81 pitches, only five were swung on and missed. He topped out at 96 MPH with an average fastball of less than 94 MPH. That may not seem like a cause for concern but compared to where he was a year ago, it is a considerable drop off. The chart below represents his average fastball prior to last night's game. The Colorado Rockies are 0-6 -9.12 units with Jimenez on this hill this season.

"He's pitching like he's hurt," one scout said recently. "He reminds me of what Mark Mulder looked like before he went down."
