MLB Handicapping: Angels' Hanson makes American League debut

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
LA Angels (Hanson) at Texas (Harrison) -125 O/U 9.5

Keep an eye on Los Angeles' Tommy Hanson as he makes his American League debut this afternoon in Texas. Hanson struggled with back problems and a drop in velocity last year. And during the spring he was pulled from a start due to the tight tricep. In his last spring training outing he went 6.1 innings, struck out six and walked four (93 pitches).

MLB Handicapping: New York Yankees send struggling Nova to hill vs. Detroit

NY Yankees (Nova) at Detroit (Fister) -185 O/U 8

When was the last time the New York Yankees were a +170 underdog? That's the current price for tonight's game in Detroit as Ivan Nova takes on Doug Fister. According to reports Nova didn't have a good spring and seems to be struggling with his mechanics. Nova went 2-5 with a 7.05 ERA, 1.63 WHIP, and .309 BAA after the All-Star break last season.

"The adjustments were not major," Rothschild said. "It’s something that when he’s right he does throughout, it’s just a matter of trying to make him more consistent with it. There’s some adjustment there, but it's not -- I don’t know if that’s why he’s had a bad spring."

"I don’t think he pitched as well as we’d like him to, but a lot of times that doesn’t make a difference as long Read more

Washington (Haren) at Cincinnati (Bailey) -120 O/U 8.5
Recommendation: Cincinnati

Bettors are already aware of Roy Halladay's rapid decline but not far behind him is Dan Haren. In 2009, Haren posted a 3.14 ERA with 223 strikeouts in 229 innings. And as recent as two years ago he was seen mowing down American League hitters to the tune of 192 Ks in 238.1 innings with a 3.17 ERA. But last year's decline (176.2 IP, 142 Ks, 4.33 ERA) was no fluke. Haren lost his velocity and fell in love with his cutter and the results weren't positive. Now in Washington, Haren has a chance to bounce back – and really is a good situation of having three stud pitchers ahead of him in the rotation and getting to toss in the National League. However, reports this spring weren't good. In one game he was 84-87 on the gun and topped out at 89. In his last spring start things were slightly better and one scout said he was "getting close" to regaining his form. I’m still leery and note Read more

MLB Handicapping: Shadows cause havoc on Minnesota afternoon games

04.04.2013     01:10 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Interesting article on some of Minnesota's players and coaching complaining about how difficult it is to see during mid-afternoon games. There have been two such instanes thus far and both games went under the total. Note that the Twins have 3:10 pm local starts against the Mets (April 13) and Rangers (April 27) upcoming.

“It’s not easy in the shadows,” manager Ron Gardenhire said. “With these 3 o’clock games, it’s tough to see the ball.”

“It’s bad anywhere you go, but here, seeing the ball off the bat, seeing the ball from infielders, seeing the ball out of the pitchers’s hand — I mean, it’s as bad as I can remember right now,” Morneau said. “We can’t control the temperature, but we can control when we play. And this has been tough.”

MLB Handicapping: Seattle's Maurer makes debut vs. Oakland

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Seattle (Maurer) at Oakland (Griffin) -155 O/U 7

Seattle right-hander Brandon Maurer will make his MLB debut tonight in Oakland. Maurer was a 23rd round draft pick out of high school back in 2008. In 210 minor league innings, Maurer posted a 3.99 ERA, 3.43 FIP, with 190 strikeouts, and 71 walks. Here is the breakdown on Maurer from the 2013 Baseball Prospect Book.

Injuries hampered Brandon Maurer for most of his career, but he was healthy in 2012 and logged in a very successful season in Double-A. A 23rd round pick from high school in Orange, California, in 2008, Maurer has always intrigued scouts with his 93-96 MPH fastball. He could never stay healthy long enough to fully develop his secondary pitches, but that changed last year. His curveball, slider, and changeup all showed significant improvement, giving him four major Read more

Philadelphia (Halladay) at Atlanta (Maholm) -135 O/U 7
Recommendation: Atlanta

I’m determined to fade Roy Halladay tonight as he takes to the hill for the first time this season against the Atlanta Braves. Halladay has been one of the best pitchers in MLB for the better part of the last decade but he struggled in the second half of last season showing signs that maybe he is starting to move past the prime of his career. Halladay allowed 3+ runs in each of his last four starts in the 2012 season and things got even worse for Halladay this spring.

The Phillies ace endured a difficult March in which his fastball struggled to get into the high 80's. He suffered a stomach virus too which took away much of his strength. This of course is all coming off a season where Halladay posted his highest ERA (4.49) since 2001. I'm not sold on him coming out of the gate strong tonight against Atlanta who have hit him hard in recent starts. Halladay allowed 3, 4 and 8 runs in his three Read more

MLB Betting Free Play: Colorado Rockies at Milwaukee Brewers

Colorado (Nicasio) at Milwaukee (Peralta) -135 O/U 9
Recommendataion: Over

The roof will be closed at Miller Park again tonight – there’s no need to worry about the gametime temperatures hovering around the freezing mark.  And if we’re not worried about cold weather deflating production, this game has all the makings of another high scoring slugfest in a series that has already seen the first two games fly Over the total!

Colorado’s totals are still somewhat deflated following their anemic level of offensive production for most of the season last year.  But last year’s team was an injury riddled mess.  This year’s team has a healthy Troy Tulowitzki, a healthy Carlos Gonzalez and a healthy and rejuvenated Todd Helton, all three of whom were essentially non-factors for this team last year.

Rockies manager Walt Weiss, following last night’s eight run outburst: “We really had some good at-bats tonight. Read more

MLB Gambling: Betting markets tip hand on early season fade of Roy Halladay

04.03.2013     08:04 AM     Printer Friendly
Philadelphia (Halladay) at Atlanta (Maholm) -135 O/U 7

Doesn't look like the betting markets are giving Philadelphia's Roy Halladay much respect to start the season. Pinnacle opened tonight's game against Atlanta as a pick 'em but virtually all of the money has come in on Paul Maholm and the Braves. Heading into the season, Halladay seems accepting of the fact that his is going to have to reinvent himself in order to succeed. Line history courtesy of Pinnacle.

"I'll have to do more," Halladay said. "I'm going to have to pitch that way. Add. Subtract. The older you get, unfortunately, you don't always have the ability to go harder, harder, harder. That's something you have to adjust to. Change your spots, change your location. I feel comfortable I can pitch in that area."

MLB Handicapping: Lincecum and Beckett try to regain form

04.03.2013     06:53 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
San Francisco (Lincecum) at LA Dodgers (Beckett) -122 O/U 7

Pitchers are fragile creatures and when decline hits it is tough to stop. Take Josh Beckett who in 2011 posted a 2.89 ERA and 1.03 WHIP in Boston. Tim Lincecum won back-to-back Cy Young awards in 2008 and 2009 and as recently as 2011 was considered one of the most dominant pitchers in baseball. Beckett is only 32 but has already racked up nearly 1,900 innings. He pitched well following last year's trade to LA (43 IP, 2.93 ERA) but no longer has top-tier stuff. Heading into 2013, Beckett has essentially been forced to reinvent himself.

Like most pitchers, he chased the lost velocity for a good while and got beat up doing it. Then he accepted it, or tried, and got beat up some anyway. So there'll be days like Sunday when he's a few inches right or left of guile, far from perfect, and the Read more

MLB Betting News: Cleveland's Jimenez looks to bounce back in 2013

04.03.2013     06:31 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Last year bettors had a field day fading Cleveland’s Ubaldo Jimenez who finished with an American League-high 17 losses. It also marked the third straight season his ERA, WHIP, and BA against regressed. Heading into 2013, Jimenez and first-year manager Terry Francona are confident they can get things turned around. Note that during his year and a half with the Indians, Jimenez has had four different pitching coaches. Jimenez threw 28 innings during spring training and posted 20 strikeouts, six walks, and a 5.14 ERA. He's a +160 underdog tonight in Toronto.

"When you start pitching bad like that, you take it with you," he said. "You wonder when it will end. You are human."

"I had (games) where I didn't know what to do with the ball or where it would go," he said. "I spent so much time thinking about how to throw the ball that ... it was just real bad. And when they trade for you and you want to help and you don't, you feel bad."
