Calgary Flames Season O/U Betting Recommendation

Calgary Under 90.5 Points OR Under 41.5 Wins

Calgary missed the playoffs for a second straight season as they faltered down the stretch and simply didn’t have the class to hang with the rest of the Western Conference.  They finished the season with 41 wins and 91 points and with a non-existent offseason that saw little improvement, it is hard to imagine the Flames will top that mark – especially with other teams getting significantly better.  GM Darryl Sutter brought in free agent forwards Olli Jokinen and Alex Tanguay in the offseason.  Weird thing is they were previously traded away by Sutter.  I’m not sure how much help these guys are going to bring to the table when you factor in the declining production of Jarome Iginla over the last three seasons.  Iginla has also been having back issues early on this preseason and the Flames are already offensively challenged and did nothing to bring in more depth up front.  They do play sound defense, but perhaps the biggest reason for their fall this season will be the loss of defensemen Robyn Regehr (Buffalo) on the blue line.  Regehr is a special player that Read more

Stanley Cup Game 3 Betting Recommendation: Vancouver at Boston

Stanley Cup Finals - Game 3
Vancouver at Boston
Recommendation: Under 5 +115

There have been reports of poor ice conditions in the Boston TD Garden today. The temperatures outside the rink are not helping the situation as they approach the mid-90’s with high humidity. This is typically disastrous conditions for the ice – soft and choppy – as the players skate deeper into periods. I am sure the rink staff is doing everything they can before game time, but there is only so much they can do. With the ice conditions not 100% I expect a more vanilla game from both teams.  Generally players make safer passes and do not hold onto the puck as long when the ice is sub-par.  As a player, your stick handling skills get neutralized and your control over the puck isn’t as good as it would be on normal flat ice. As a result, you tend to see fewer prime scoring opportunities.  Game 3 saw both teams very undisciplined after the whistle which Read more

Tampa Bay at Boston -150 O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Boston

At the start of this series I was looking to back Tampa Bay as an underdog with the expectation of a lot of tight checking, one goal games, determined by a couple bounces of the puck. In Game 1 Tampa Bay got those bounces as we saw them score three times in under a minute and a half in the first period.  From there on out the Lightning did what they needed to do defensively in order to seal the win.  In that contest, we also saw Tampa Bay outskate the Bruins and win the loose puck battle. Both teams came in off of long breaks from their respective quarterfinals matchups so to see at least one of them perform poorly was not all too surprising. Obviously with the ebb and flow nature of hockey, Tampa Bay is unlikely to be as fortunate for a second straight game. That is especially true considering the focus expected from a desperate home side. Given the circumstances, this is a fair price on the Bruins.

NHL Playoff Betting Preview: San Jose at Detroit

San Jose +120 at Detroit O/U 5.5
Recommendation: San Jose

Plain and simple, San Jose is a different team this postseason. Although their "choke" label won't go away without a Stanley Cup they have done plenty to quiet the critics. Up 3-0 in the series, the Sharks tore out the heart of the Red Wings last game by tying it up with a late third period goal and then winning in OT, 4-3. The Sharks have now won six straight meetings and 11 of the last 13 in the series. Goaltending for the Sharks has been instrumental as Antti Niemi has come up with some big saves; saves that Evgeni Nabokov couldn't make last postseason. Niemi gives his team an opportunity to win even if they aren't playing at 100%.

Lack of special teams’ efficiency has once again plagued Detroit. They were able to get away with a sloppy PK against the Coyotes, but against more skilled and talented teams like the Sharks that deficiency has been compounded. The Sharks can play breakeven 5-on-5 hockey but they tend to Read more

Eastern Conference Semifinals
No. 2 Philadelphia vs. No. 3 Boston

This is a rematch of last year’s memorable meltdown/comeback in which Philadelphia battled back from not only a 3-0 series deficit but 3-0 in Game 7 to beat the Bruins. I mentioned in my Vancouver preview that sometimes talented teams need a wake-up call in the first round for a reminder that the drive for the Stanley Cup won’t be easy. The Flyers got just that against Buffalo as they escaped in seven games. The team I saw play in Game 7 is the same team that was absolutely unstoppable in the Eastern Conference for much of the season. They’ll be a tough out the rest of the way if they can duplicate that performance. Their team speed rivals anyone in the Western Conference and they are simply head and shoulders faster than a majority of the Eastern Conference. Philadelphia’s ability to transition and get the puck up the ice can create a lot of scoring opportunities which will be needed against the Bruins. Read more

Eastern Conference Semifinals
No. 1 Washington vs. No. 5 Tampa Bay

This series is going to be a battle, plain and simple.  I expect to see plenty of one goal and overtime games between these two clubs.  During the first round of the playoffs against the Penguins, Tampa Bay employed its 1-3-1 “trap” system throughout the neutral zone which is designed to clog the middle and slow down the opposition.  This provides for less puck possession and more battle type hockey where each team is fighting for loose pucks. Washington is accustomed to this style after playing a more defensive oriented style this year.

The bottom line is this series is going to come down to special teams.  Tampa Bay got by Pittsburgh in seven games by going 8-for-27 on the power play and killing off 34-of-35 penalties.  That type of production will surely be enough to get by Washington, but unfortunately the Capitals were also very stingy on their PK against New York killing off Read more

Western Conference Semifinals
No. 2 San Jose vs. No. 3 Detroit

These two teams met last season in the second round of the playoffs with San Jose winning in five games.  Four of the five went over the total while three of the four regular season matchups this year did the same.  The recent series itself has been owned by the Sharks who have won eight of the past 10.  They also own a home ice advantage that has been historically kind.

Detroit meanwhile struggled at home down the stretch going just 4-8 before beating Phoenix twice.  Not to take anything away from the Red Wings but the Coyotes weren’t prepared at all for the playoffs and probably shouldn’t have been there in the first place.  Regardless, the Wings took care of business on the strength of a sound power play: 4-of- 15 (27%). Their penalty killing however was awful as they allowed 6 goals in 18 attempts (67%).  This will play a huge role in this series as San Jose struggled with its PP Read more

Western Conference Semifinals
No. 1 Vancouver vs. No. 5 Nashville

Both teams were tested in their opening round matchups; Vancouver a bit more then it had bargained for after being up 3-0 in the series against the Blackhawks.  The Canucks escaped with a Game 7 OT win; perhaps the wake-up call they needed.  Nashville should not be taken lightly as it contained some of the hottest players in the NHL during a 4-2 series win over Anaheim.

All four regular season games between these two teams were tight defensive battles that went under the total.  It is interesting to point out that in almost every matchup the Vancouver defense was in some way banged up and now that they have a healthy blueline corps and their speed may be a bit too much for Nashville to handle.  That being said, the Predators are almost 100% healthy as the return of Sullivan, Tootoo, and Erat made a huge difference against the Ducks.

Goaltending isn’t going to be an issue for either team Read more

Detroit -120 at Phoenix O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Over

Detroit looks to close out the series tonight in Phoenix. Since the first period of Game 1, the Red Wings have been scoring in bunches with 12 goals in eight periods. These teams have played all three games in the series over the total and last year's playoff series trended that way as well going 4-1-2 O/U. The power plays for both teams have been red hot combining to go 8 for 28 (28.6%). As a rule of thumb in NHL it is a good idea to play elimination games over the total. Teams play a little looser style knowing they need to press the issue offensively if they get down. Goalies tend to be pulled for an extra attacker in situations at the end of the game down by 1, 2, and even 3 goals when the elimination teams get in desperation mode. Going back to last season elimination games have gone over the total 17-8-2 (+8.75 units) and that is the way we’ll look to play tonight’s matchup.

NHL Playoffs – Eastern Conference First Round
No. 4 Pittsburgh vs No. 5 Tampa Bay

What to expect: Don’t expect Sidney Crosby to come back into the lineup just because the playoffs have started. The Penguins will have to play without their captain for this series like they have for half of the season. They finished the season on an 11-4 run, but don’t be fooled as five of the 11 wins came in a shootout – and advantage they won’t have in the playoffs. Tampa Bay comes into the playoffs on a solid run as well going 7-1 in its last eight games. Both teams are playing great defense right now and I expect to see that continue in the playoffs since goals will be at a premium in this series. This series is going to come down to special teams and which team can take advantage of their man advantages. Both have been successful on the power play and penalty kill this season. Tampa Bay had 20.5% PP and 83.8% PK (104.3%) while Pittsburgh had 15.6% PP and 86.5% PK (102.1%). Read more
