NHL Eastern Conference Mid-Season Betting Report

01.04.2012     11:56 AM     Sammy P Sports     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Sammy P Sports

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The NHL season nears the halfway mark so it’s time to sit down and take a look at where teams are at currently and what can we expect going forward.  There are a few surprises in the Eastern Conference so far.  We knew the Pittsburgh Penguins and Boston Bruins would be playing good hockey and competing at a high level, but I don’t think too many people expected the Florida Panthers, Philadelphia Flyers, or the New York Rangers to be this solid in the early going.  I liked both the Rangers and Panthers heading into the season so their success doesn’t come as a huge shock. The Flyers though have exceeded expectations. I didn’t think we'd see their young guys grow so fast and make such an immediate impact. I figured it would take them at least a year to adapt after the major overhaul to their team this past offseason.

The major disappointment thus far has to be the Buffalo Sabres.  Despite the a handful of key injuries the first half of the season, they still should be doing more with the talent they have healthy and Ryan Miller in net. Tampa Bay has been a disappointment as well.  They haven’t strung Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Play: Calgary Flames at Vancouver Canucks

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Calgary at Vancouver -235 O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Under

Calgary faces one of the hottest teams in the NHL tonight in the Vancouver Canucks.  The Canucks have vaulted to second place in the Northwest Division and are just one point (with two games in hand) behind a backpedaling Minnesota team.  Vancouver has finally gotten back to playing solid team defense coupled with great goaltending from Roberto Luongo (and backup Cory Schneider) during its 12-2-1 current run.  They are giving up on average just 1.67 goals per game during their 15-game streak.  Calgary has been doing a lot of good things lately as well and they too are doing it with solid team defense and timely scoring.  Calgary has gone UNDER the total in six out of its last eight games and will be playing in a back-to-back situation here tonight.  With the heavy price on the Canucks, the UNDER in this inter-division rivalry game looks to be the best way to play it.

NHL Betting Notes: Buffalo seeks revenge on Boston after vicious hit on goalie

11.23.2011     08:54 AM     Printer Friendly
Boston -125 at Buffalo O/U 5.5

I’m curious to see what is going to happen in Buffalo tonight after Buffalo forward Milan Lucic laid out Sabres goalie Ryan Miller during a 6-2 Bruins win two week ago. Will the Sabres stand up and make Lucic pay for his hit? Miller, one of the top goalies in the league, has been out ever since the hit (watch video here). No one on Buffalo can beat Lucic in a fight but you can't let someone take out your team MVP without some sort of retribution, especially a division rival who benefits the most from Miller's departure. Either Lucic pays for the hit tonight, or we may see Boston's goalie Tim Thomas get run tonight.  He is fair game as well.  Eye for an eye?  Or in this case, Miller for a Thomas.

"He's obviously a good player," Sabres captain Jason Pominville said. "He's usually a clean player, to be honest with you. He gets in there and works extremely hard. Obviously, we weren't happy with the Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Play: New York Rangers at Florida Panthers

NY Rangers at Florida -120 O/U 5
Recommendation: Under

The New York Rangers head to South Florida tonight to face the first place Southeast Division Florida Panthers. I have made no mistake in the early going of this 2011 NHL season of my love for both squads. They have been hot out of the gate and have what it takes to make a run at the Eastern Conference this season. The key has been superb defense as the Rangers are giving up just 2.12 goals a game while the Panthers aren't far behind giving up just 2.40 a game. Offense on the other hand can be limited at times, especially when they face one another. These teams have combined for just 36 regulation goals in their last 10 meetings. Needless to say, the under has been a money making machine standing at 8-1-1. Despite the recent success of the Florida Panthers, I do have one major concern with this team right now – lack of scoring from their depth players. Florida has seen tremendous production from its top line of Stephen Weiss, Kris Versteeg, and Tomas Fleischmann, but relatively nothing from the other nine forwards. In fact the top line has accounted for 41% of the team’s total points Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Pick: New Jersey Devils at Boston Bruins

New Jersey +165 at Boston
Recommendation: New Jersey

Too much value in this line not to look at the New Jersey Devils tonight in Boston. This one projects to be a close, low scoring affair. Yes, Boston is red hot right now, and has won five straight averaging 6 goals over that five-game span. They have definitely found their offense, but I think New Jersey has a shot to shut them down. The Devils won four of their last five games, allowing just 2.4 gpg. I expect a close 3-2 type game here where either team can win it late so give me the nice sized underdog.

NHL Gambling News: Nashville Predators lose key cog Legwand

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Nashville at Anaheim -125 O/U 5

Big loss for Nashville as David Legwand gets hurt yesterday night. Legwand is the glue that holds that team together – great defensively, kills penalties, and plays on the power play. The Predators are at the tail end of a five-game road trip tonight in Anaheim. It could be exactly what the Ducks need as they begin their three-game homestand and try to get an offense going after losing eight of their last nine games. Legwand's injury is definitely something to monitor and track moving forward.

“When he’s out we lose a power-play guy, a penalty-kill guy, and a defensive player and scorer,” Predators forward Colin Wilson said. “When you lose a guy like that, it’s a major loss.”
