NHL Handicapper Free Play: St. Louis Blues at Nashville Predators

St. Louis at Nashville -130 O/U 5
Recommendation: Nashville

St. Louis heads to Nashville tonight for an always heated Central Division matchup.  This begins an important six games in 10 days road trip for the St. Louis Blues.  Throw in the game versus Boston last night on home ice and the Blues will be playing seven games in just 11 nights!  After a tough loss last night to the Bruins the Blues look to rally the troops on the second part of their back-to-back tonight in Nashville.  Don't be so quick to back the Blues here as they are 4-8 this season on the second half of a back-to-backs.  Recently on February 4th, they faced this same Nashville team on the road after a win the previous night and fell to the Predators in a 3-1 loss.  That brought the season series to a perfect 4-0 for Nashville against the Blues.  Nashville has made an early splash at the trade deadline picking up Hal Gill which will surely help their defensive core.  Nashville has surprised many this season as they have gone 17-8 since Christmas break playing against some of the stiffest competition in the NHL over that course of time.  Read more

Toronto at Philadelphia -160
Recommendation: Under 5.5 +110

To the casual NHL fan this game at first glance screams OVER the total, but as a delusional ESPN analyst says, "Not so fast!" We have to take into account how each team is playing recently. Teams go through peaks and valleys all season long due to injuries and/or confidence issues. The Boston Bruins are a perfect example of this – abysmal start only to tear off one of the greatest months in NHL memory during November. After that huge run we are seeing goals a little harder to come by for the Bruins and we are seeing similar problems with Philadelphia’s offense as well. The Flyers averaged 3.66 goals per game during their first 29 games but have dipped down to 2.75 gpg in their last 24 games and an even worse 2.20 gpg in their last five contests. Philadelphia has dealt with some key injuries lately and are still not 100 percent healthy. Toronto comes into tonight's matchup having played 10 of their last 13 games UNDER the total; doing it with stingy defense that allowed just 1.92 gpg during that 13-game span. These teams have also gone UNDER the total in six of their Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Pick: New Jersey Devils at New York Rangers

New Jersey Devils at New York Rangers -170 O/U 5
Recommendation: Over

New Jersey makes the trip across the river to face the league leading New York Rangers in Madison Square Garden tonight. Always a bitter rivalry, these two teams play each other hard and always entertain the fans in one way or another. Lately the Devils have been entertaining everyone with their huge offensive outbursts. The Devils are on a four-game win streak where they have scored 20 goals and allowed 12. Needless to say, all of those games went flying Over the total. I look for more wide open play tonight as they look to get the Rangers to stray from their puck possession style. New York loves to cycle and work the puck down low to create their scoring chances and the Devils know they can't beat them by grinding it out. The Rangers are just too big, strong, and talented to beat them at their own game. I expect the Devils to push the play and use their speed and transition offensive to create their chances tonight leaving them a bit exposed defensively as well. These two teams played a 4-3 shootout game last week and I am expecting a similar type game tonight. The total Read more

NHL All-Star Game Free Pick: Team Alfredsson vs. Team Chara

NHL All Star Game, Sunday @ Ottawa
Team Chara vs. Team Alfredsson
Recommendation: Team Alfredsson ML, Team Alfredsson -1.5 PL

The NHL just conducted its fantasy draft for Sunday’s All-Star game. You can tell from watching it that Daniel Alfredsson and Henrik Lundqvist had a game plan while Zdeno Chara was seemingly clueless. Looking at the game from a betting perspective (lines have yet to be released), I think Team Alfredsson has the clear edge. They are playing the game in Ottawa with five Senators slated to suit up making chemistry head and shoulders higher on Team Alfredsson. Not only is the entire Ottawa first line with Alfredsson, but the Sedin twins are as well. One of the glaring shortcomings I see with Team Chara is its defense. If I had to make the line I would make Alfredsson in the neighborhood of -135. I'll be on that side as well as the puck line for a unit apiece.

Edmonton at St. Louis -270 O/U 5
Recommendation: Under

Edmonton faces one of the hottest teams in the league tonight in the St. Louis Blues.  It's no surprise that this Blues team has held strong throughout the course of the season with great goaltending, solid defense, and timely scoring.  As you can see by the steep price tag, St. Louis is a different team on its home ice with a stout record of 19-3-3 (8-9-3 on the road).  We have seen the books start charging premium prices for that home ice but nothing like Read more

Phoenix -115 at Columbus O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Under

We cashed an UNDER ticket with Phoenix on the road last night in Detroit and we’ll use the same play for their game in Columbus this evening.  I mentioned yesterday the Coyotes’ lack of scoring on the road of late and I’m expecting the trend to continue against the Blue Jackets.  At first glance this Columbus team is very poor defensively (3.29 goals per game allowed, 29th), but upon closer examination we find that there is a bit of home/road dichotomy to the numbers. At home, Columbus allows a league average 2.60 gpg which has resulted in 13 of 19 games going UNDER the total. The Blue Jackets will be very limited offensively tonight with three top offensive producers (Jeff Carter, RJ Umberger, and Kristian Huselius) all out due to injury.  Add in the previous injury to offensive defenseman James Wisniewski – he’s missed the last five games due to an ankle injury – and you are left with a team starving for offense.  All signs point to a low scoring game where both teams will have to rely on their defense to win.  Lay the juice and Read more

Phoenix at Detroit -210 O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Under

Phoenix comes into Detroit tonight in the midst of a three-game road trip in which they dropped the first game 2-1 in a shootout to the New York Rangers.  Phoenix has fallen from grace the last month going just 5-11 and really struggling to put pucks in the net especially away from home.  They’ve averaged just 1.60 goals away from home in their last 5 contests.  Detroit has been phenomenal defensively on its home ice this season giving up just 1.78 goals per game and an even better mark of just 10 goals against in their last seven home games.  Expect a tight defensive effort from the Red Wings tonight after giving up five goals to the Islanders on Tuesday night.  Detroit may also still be without star Pavel Datsyuk tonight as he is recovering from a lower body injury and is a game time decision.  His absence in the lineup is definitely felt offensively for this Detroit team.  Past history between these two teams would have you believe this is going to be a high scoring affair, but with their current form the only way to look in this Read more

NHL Western Conference Mid-Season Betting Report

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Yesterday we took a look at the contenders and pretenders in the Eastern Conference. Today let’s focus in on the Western Conference. Top to bottom the West has always been the tougher conference in recent years, but this season it is hard to argue the West is better than the East. Unlike the East, the Western Conference doesn’t have that distinct upper- and low-tier. Almost every team in West has made a run thus far only to eventually be pulled back to the pack. Coming into the season everyone expected Detroit, Chicago, Vancouver, and San Jose to be atop the standing. Some argued that Los Angeles deserved to be in that discussion as well. But teams like Minnesota, St. Louis, and even Dallas all have made strong cases for inclusion.

The top 12 teams in the West are currently separated by just 12 points. This makes the fight for home ice advantage that much more important down the stretch. Detroit and St. Louis for example are on the cusp for home ice in the playoffs as of today – an important goal considering they are Read more

NHL Eastern Conference Mid-Season Betting Report

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The NHL season nears the halfway mark so it’s time to sit down and take a look at where teams are at currently and what can we expect going forward.  There are a few surprises in the Eastern Conference so far.  We knew the Pittsburgh Penguins and Boston Bruins would be playing good hockey and competing at a high level, but I don’t think too many people expected the Florida Panthers, Philadelphia Flyers, or the New York Rangers to be this solid in the early going.  I liked both the Rangers and Panthers heading into the season so their success doesn’t come as a huge shock. The Flyers though have exceeded expectations. I didn’t think we'd see their young guys grow so fast and make such an immediate impact. I figured it would take them at least a year to adapt after the major overhaul to their team this past offseason.

The major disappointment thus far has to be the Buffalo Sabres.  Despite the a handful of key injuries the first half of the season, they still should be doing more with the talent they have healthy and Ryan Miller in net. Tampa Bay has been a disappointment as well.  They haven’t strung Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Play: Calgary Flames at Vancouver Canucks

Calgary at Vancouver -235 O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Under

Calgary faces one of the hottest teams in the NHL tonight in the Vancouver Canucks.  The Canucks have vaulted to second place in the Northwest Division and are just one point (with two games in hand) behind a backpedaling Minnesota team.  Vancouver has finally gotten back to playing solid team defense coupled with great goaltending from Roberto Luongo (and backup Cory Schneider) during its 12-2-1 current run.  They are giving up on average just 1.67 goals per game during their 15-game streak.  Calgary has been doing a lot of good things lately as well and they too are doing it with solid team defense and timely scoring.  Calgary has gone UNDER the total in six out of its last eight games and will be playing in a back-to-back situation here tonight.  With the heavy price on the Canucks, the UNDER in this inter-division rivalry game looks to be the best way to play it.
