NBA Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Charlotte Hornets at Toronto Raptors

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Charlotte at Toronto -6 O/U 202
Recommendation: Toronto

My clients and I cashed an easy winner betting against the Hornets last night. There’s little reason to think that Charlotte will be significantly more competitive as they step up in class against a focused foe on the second night of back-to-backs tonight. Let me start with an excerpt from yesterday’s write-up, with the numbers edited slightly to reflect current realities:

“Charlotte was a playoff team last year, finishing with 48 wins and the #6 seed. The markets still remember and respect that team, in some ways overshadowing the 33-41 squad from this year in the betting world. The Hornets did their best to blow a 25 point second half lead against a Suns team playing on the second night of back-2-backs in their last game, on the heels of a defensive no-show against the Cavs in their previous contest. And the betting markets are offering us legitimate value with wiseguy steam showing for Charlotte in early betting action today.”

There’s been steam on Charlotte again today, pushing the line down to -5.5 as I write this Read more

MLB Handicapping: Know your 2017 umpire crews

03.29.2017     10:21 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Looks like MLB is bringing in some fresh "blue" blood as four umpires retired following the end of the 2016 season. John Hirschbeck, Jim Joyce, Tim Welke, and Bob Davison have officially called it quits.  Adam Hamari, Pat Hoberg, Gabe Morales and Carlos Torres were bumped up to full-time. Here's a link to the tentative umpire crews for 2017.

NCAA Tournament Handicapping: University of Phoenix Stadium could be tough on shooters

03.29.2017     09:42 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We blogged earlier this week about the unique court layout of University of Phoenix Stadium where this weekend's Final Four will be held. Generally, 3-point shooting is a good indicator of whether or not a venue is "shooter friendly." Back in 2009, the venue hosted three NCAA Tournament games and the results from deep weren't pretty. Teams were a combined 25-for-92, 27%. The good news is three of the four remaining teams don't rely heavily on the 3-point shot.

2009 NCAA Tournament Region 3-point shooting
Missouri-Memphis: 9-for-31
Missouri-UConn: 7-for-30
Purdue-UConn: 9-for-31
Total: 25-for-92, 27%

Percentage of points from 3 (national rank)
North Carolina 25.3% (293rd)
Gonzaga 26.2% (275th)
South Carolina 27.2% (255th)
Oregon 32.9% (105th)

MLB Handicapping: Colorado's Bud Black tries to change pitching culture

03.29.2017     09:22 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Colorado Rockies manager Bud Black has emphasized two changes for his pitching staff this season: more curveballs and less walks. A common theory is that it's tough to throw and effective curveball in the dry air at elevation. Black seems to think, if you can throw a good one at sea level you can do the same at Coors Field. Last year's staff threw the second lowest percentage of curveballs in MLB. As for the walks, Colorado was tied for the fifth-most in the league at 547.

"It's been one of the things we really bought into," Colorado left-hander Harrison Musgrave said. "You can't defend a walk, as elementary as it sounds. But it's true. With a defense like ours behind you, let batters put the ball in play."

"My philosophy is this," first-year Rockies manager Bud Black said Thursday. "If you have a good curveball — and Chatwood, for instance, has a good curveball, he imparts great spin on the ball — it can be effective in Colorado. I don't

Roger Goodell slowly warming to idea of the NFL in Las Vegas

03.29.2017     08:51 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Following the announcement that the Oakland Raiders will (eventually) move to Las Vegas, Roger Goodell offered his own "hot take." Goodell made it abundantly clear that he does not like gambling but seemed to acknowledge that the practice isn't as sinful as once thought. Though we found it interesting that he claimed Las Vegas was "different" from say, 10-20 years ago. Roger, we think you're getting your eras confused. What you meant to say was Las Vegas was no longer like this. Later, Goodell also mentioned that there was probably no need for sportsbooks to keep Las Vegas Raiders games off the board.
