College Football Betting Preview: Clemson Tigers at Georgia Bulldogs

Clemson at Georgia
Saturday, 2:30 pm PT -ESPN
CRIS Opener:
Georgia -8.5 O/U 58
CRIS Current: Georgia -7.5 O/U 54
Brent's Recommendation: Under

Last year’s season opening matchup produced one of the most exciting games of the year, a wild 38-35 Clemson win. Many of the key participants from that game are gone, however, as both teams look for replacements. For Clemson, three-year starting quarterback Tajh Boyd graduated and Cole Stoudt gets the nod as his replacement. Stoudt has freshman Deshaun Watson behind him and it looks like both quarterbacks will see action in the opener. Also missing for the Tigers are their top two wide receivers, including the 4th pick in the NFL draft, Sammy Watkins. Making it even worse is the loss of 1,000 rusher Roderick McDowell at running back. The offensive line also has two new starters and just 25 career starts among the returnees.

Luckily for Clemson, the Georgia defense Read more

Bookmaker arrested for running post-up sportsbook operation

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
This one is interesting. Most run-of-the-mill offscreen sportsbooks deal in credit but an Alabama man was actually running an online post-up operation where clients would "deposit" money into their accounts. The man was recently busted and forced to fork over $67K.

"It's not charged as bookmaking cases have been charged traditionally, said Edmondson's attorney Tommy Spina. "The gist of the offense is the transmission of wagering of information on the internet."

"I've been involved in almost every bookmaking case in recent history,'' Spina said. "This is the first one I've seen charged like this, and it's probably the first one at all in at least 10 years."

College Football Betting Preview: Florida State Seminoles vs. Oklahoma State Cowboys

Florida State vs. Oklahoma State
Saturday, 5 pm PT, Arlington - FOX
CRIS Opener:
Florida State -17 O/U 63
CRIS Current: Florida State -18 O/U 63.5
Paul's Recommendation: Florida State

Defending national champion Florida State and Big XII perennial contender Oklahoma State square off in Saturday's 2014 season opener at AT&T Stadium in Arlington also the site of the finals of the inaugural College Football Playoff. While the Seminoles return many of their key components and rank as the consensus choice to repeat as national champions, the Mike Gundy-coached Cowboys will be trotting out lineups of mostly first-time starters on both offense and defense. With just eight returning starters, four on both sides of the ball, Oklahoma State is one of the least experienced teams in any of the so-called Power Five Read more

College Football Betting Preview: California Golden Bears at Northwestern Wildcats

California at Northwestern
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - ABC
CRIS Opener:
Northwestern -12 O/U 61
CRIS Current: Northwestern -11 O/U 60
Andrew's Recommendation: Northwestern

The thing to remember about Cal is if we go back to the early portion of head coach Sonny Dykes' first season there were signs of potential. In Week 1 Cal had Northwestern on the ropes in Berkley before two costly second half interceptions gave the far more experience Wildcats the 44-30 win. And in Week 3, Cal was eventually blown out but hung over 500 yards on a 12-win Ohio State squad. Then the wheels came off as injuries set in, their lack of depth was exposed, and Dykes' pedal-to-the-metal offense put a ridiculous amount of pressure of what would end up being one the worst defenses in the country. My point? If Cal was good enough to play with Northwestern and move the ball vs. Ohio State then a year later (wiser, stronger, and healthier) Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Abilene Christian Wildcats at Georgia State Panthers

Abilene Christian at Georgia State
Wednesday, 5 pm PT - ESPNU
CRIS Opener:
Georgia State -5 O/U 63
CRIS Current: Georgia State -4 O/U 60.5
Drew’s Recommendation: Under

If you were to glance at Abilene Christian’s offensive production last year, you would undoubtedly come away impressed. But when you start to dig a little deeper however, you find a couple key stats that stand out. Not accounting for the likes of Concordia-Selma, Houston Baptist, and the Incarnate Word, final scores (84-6, 69-12, 40-6) respectfully, in five of six competitive games last year the Wildcats averaged 2.436 plays per minute of possession. This doesn’t exactly scream that “tempo” is a top priority. With head coach Ken Collums and offensive coordinator Nathan Young returning, I see no reason for this tendency to change. Moreover, they will be breaking in a new quarterback behind virtually an entirely new offensive line. This is not a good combo when trying to replace 4,500 yards and 48 touchdowns of offensive production.

MLB Handicapper Free Play: Tampa Bay Rays at Baltimore Orioles

Tampa Bay (Cobb) at Baltimore (Chen) -105 O/U 7.5
Recommendation: Under

The Baltimore Orioles demolished the Tampa Bay Rays last night 9-1.  That's good news for the Orioles as they had previously lost three straight and managed just four runs in those three games.  Baltimore will have a tougher test tonight against Rays starter Alex Cobb who has really turned around his season.  Cobb has won his last two starts giving up just one earned run.  In fact you need to go back nine starts (7/4) to find the last game where Cobb gave up more than two runs.  Needless to say, Cobb's last six starts have all gone Under the total.  Baltimore counters with Wei-Yin Chen.  Chen has also had a string of under the total games to his name.  He has seen five straight games go under the total and seven of his last eight.  Chen has pitched well as of late in Camden Yards going 3-0 with a 2.84 ERA.  I'm not expecting much to be accomplished by either Read more

College Football Betting: Virigina Tech names former Texas Tech quarterback its starter

08.25.2014     07:13 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
For the first time since 2011, Virginia Tech will have a new starting quarterback. Michael Brewer, who transferred from Texas Tech, was named the team's Week 1 starter. Brewer played in 13 games for the Red Raiders the last two seasons (51-of-58, 440 yards, 5 TDs, 0 INTs). Dating back to high school, Brewer has played almost exclusively in a shotgun/spread offense. He'll be asked to play under center with OC Scot Loeffler running more of a pro-style attack.

"Both guys are going to be needed in the season," said Tech offensive coordinator Scot Loeffler in the statement released by Tech. "You always need a good, solid starter and a good backup. Both of them need to be ready to go. Brenden Motley will be third on the depth chart and will continue to develop."

"I'd say when we're spread out and throwing the ball around, that's what I'm used to, stuff like that," said Brewer on Friday regarding his greatest strength as a quarterback since arriving at Virginia Read more

College Football Gambling: Returning quarterback has historically meant good things for K-State

08.21.2014     09:48 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Kansas State's Bill Snyder has a pretty impressive track record with a returning quarterback under center. The last five times it has occurred the most recent in 2013 with Colin Klein the Wildcats have gone on to win 11 games. Jake Waters is back after throwing for 2,469 yards with 18 TDs and 9 INTs. Getting to 11 wins will be a daunting task according to the betting markets with KSU lined at 7.5ov-144 wins at Pinnacle. The Wildcats play five of their nine Big XII games on the road including trips to Oklahoma and Baylor.

“The expectations we put on ourselves are way higher than last year and way higher than anything anyone else is going to put on us,” Waters said. “We are a very confident group with what we have coming back, but we also know how hard we have to go out and work to win. We have a chance to be a special team.”

NFL Preseason Handicapping: Eagles expected to have key offensive weapons vs. Steelers

Pittsburgh at Philadelphia -3.5 O/U 50.5

Some news and notes on Philadelphia's game plan for tonight's preseason tilt vs. Pittsburgh. According to reports, all three of Nick Foles' starting receivers, Jeremy Maclin, Riley Cooper, and Jordan Matthews, will play. In last year's Week 3 preseason game, the Eagles posted 452 total yards en route to a spread covering (-4.5) 31-24 win over Jacksonville.

"I just want to see guys play," Eagles coach Chip Kelly said. "It's just, go and play and get valuable reps. You'd like to get in situations. But we're not going to manufacture a bad situation to see how we respond.

"We just need reps. There are some guys that need a lot more reps because they haven't played in the first two preseason games. You have to get out there and run around with the officials when it's loud and Read more
