NFL Preseason Gambling: Ravens dealing with offensive line injuries

08.28.2015     07:09 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Despite a slew of injuries across its offensive line, the playing time for Baltimore's starters won't be impacted according to head coach John Harbaugh. The Ravens (-4) play host to Washington on Saturday night.

“I think if something happens in the game, it possibly could [have an affect], but the way we’re going into the game, to start the game, we’re comfortable with the guys we have playing on the starting offensive line,” Harbaugh said Wednesday. “They’ll do a great job.”

“Lord willing, we’ll have enough to play,” offensive coordinator Marc Trestman said Tuesday, only half-joking. “And I say that with great sincerity and hope that we’ll get enough guys that we can play. But we have enough, and we’re excited for them.”

College Football Gambling: UCLA named true frosh Rosen starting quarterback

08.27.2015     07:41 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
UCLA named true freshman Josh Rosen the team's Week 1 starter. Rosen, who enrolled in school earlier this year, was regarded as the top QB recruit in the nation. He beat out last year's backup, Jerry Neuheisel, who went 23-of-30 for 178 yards and two TDs in a last minute win over Texas. UCLA is currently -17 home favorites vs. Virginia for Week 1.

“At some point it just becomes apparent to you,” Mora said. “You get a gut feeling. You’ve seen enough. You say it’s time to make a decision and let’s go.”

“We haven’t played one single snap of real football yet, but at this point, he’s living up to that billing,” Mora said.

College Football Handicapping: Wisconsin o-line is in shambles

08.27.2015     06:37 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Early season injuries for power conference teams aren't always a factor when you're laying three touchdowns against a Sun Belt school. But what happens when you face one of the top teams in the country? Wisconsin's offensive line is currently in disarray with as many as four players on the team's injury list. They are talking about having to start three freshmen. The Badgers are +10 underdogs to Alabama for Week 1's game in Arlington.

“I can’t remember (having so many guys hurt in camp), but it’s the camp at hand,” said Badgers offensive coordinator and line coach Joe Rudolph, according to Madison.com. “That’s all right, just keep going. It’s neat seeing guys jump into different spots and make it work. No one’s alarmed when their name gets called, that’s for sure.”

MLB Handicapper Free Play: Colorado Rockies at Atlanta Braves

Submitted by Andrew Lange

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Colorado (Flande) at Atlanta (Miller) -140 O/U 7.5
Recommendation: Under

Atlanta's Shelby Miller is quietly putting together his best season as a pro with a sparkling 2.50 ERA. From a season-long perspective Miller's 136 strikeouts in 158.1 innings isn't eye-popping but of late, missing bats hasn't been a problem with Miller fanning 66 over his last 61 innings. He's probably been a bit fortunate with the home run ball with only 9 allowed but it can be tied to that fact that Miller's GB% has jumped from 39% in 2014 to 50% this year. Since Troy Tulowitzki was traded, the Rockies are 8-19 with an average of only 3.3 runs per game away from Coors Field (4.1 rpg overall). Note how weak the production is despite the resurgence of Carlos Gonzalez who has been on fire with 20 home runs, a .305 BA, and .701 SLG. Gonzalez missed last night's game with a knee injury and is currently questionable for tonight. Without him, an already weak Rockies' lineup become extremely easy to navigate. Yohan Flande is by all accounts a fringe MLB arm though in limited duty both as a reliever and starter, he owns a respectable 3.94 ERA despite splitting time in Coors Field. Read more

MLB Handicapping: Are the Washington Nationals a dead team?

08.25.2015     07:14 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Washington Nationals (62-61) are going to be an interesting study the rest of the campaign. As of now, reaching the postseason is a long shot as they sit 5.5 games behind the Mets in the National League East and 10 games out in the Wild Card. They have about an 18% chance of winning the division according to FanGraphs’ playoff probabilities. We posted a blog a few weeks back about rumbling of dissension in the locker room. Now, reports claim everything is fine and the team is primed to make one last push. The schedule, while not as easy as New York's, is manageable with 13 of their next 16 at home, including three vs. New York. With the exception of a three-game series at St. Louis and six games vs. the Mets, the Nationals will play nothing but non-playoff contenders. The problem with that is Read more

Bettors continue to take advantage of tennis' in-match wagering

08.25.2015     06:45 AM     Printer Friendly
Tennis continues to deal with issues regarding live betting.

"Courtsiding [is] a major issue, as it provides fast, low-quality, inaccurate data to unscrupulous bookmakers and betting operators," said Mark Locke, CEO of Sport Integrity Monitor, a global technology and betting data company.

"With tennis as probably one of the most popular sports worldwide to bet on, it was really important that the tours do this. In addition, the tours have made sure the TV broadcasts have a short delay of a few seconds so as not to feed the gambling. This works for everyone."

College Football Betting: Mayfield named Oklahoma's starting quarterback

08.25.2015     06:24 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Former Texas Tech starting quarterback Baker Mayfield has earned the same title at his new school, Oklahoma, according to head coach Bob Stoops. Mayfield threw for 2,315 yards, 12 TDS, and 9 INTs for the Red Raiders in 2013. He'll be working under first-year offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley who is reportedly implementing a new up-tempo offense. The Sooners had the 96th-ranked QB Rating (117.7) last season.

"It's been a very tight battle among those three guys," coach Bob Stoops said in a statement. "Baker, Trevor and Cody have all made substantial progress, and I feel we can win with any of them."

College Football Gambling: Syracuse installs new offensive system

08.13.2015     08:17 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Syracuse had one of the worst passing attacks in the country last season (98.8 QB Rating, 127th nationally). As a result, the Orange have installed yet another new offense. Terrel Hunt, the team's slated starting quarterback, will be learning his third different offense in five years. Last season, Hunt threw for only one touchdown and 163.8 ypg in six contests.

"We have a long way to go," Lester said. "We're trying to get better every day, but when we talk to the players, they know what we're talking about. I don't have to explain the play before I talk about the nuances of it."

College Football Betting: Virginia seeks improved rushing attack

08.12.2015     08:26 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
After averaging only 3.3 ypc and 116.3 ypg on the ground in ACC play last season, Virginia is putting extra emphasis on running the football in 2015 according to third-year offensive coordinator Steve Fairchild.

“The first year I was here, we got in the I [formation] and tried to play football the right way,” said Fairchild, noting that Kevin Parks rushed for more than 1,000 yards in 2013.

“I’ll take the blame for last year. I think we undersold ourselves. We got a little finesse-y in the run game. We went back this spring, got underneath center and tried to pound some downhill runs.

“When you run the football, everything else feeds off that.”
