Basketball coach accused of betting against his own team

05.26.2015     09:12 AM     Printer Friendly
Nothing beats a good match fixing story, especially when it involves the Korean Basketball League. A head coach was reportedly floated a large line of credit and cashed in big betting against his own team.

Will sports betting change if regulated?

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Detailed article courtesy of ESPN about the current climate of sports betting. With regulation comes talk about match fixing and point shaving. Some folks are hopeful that if it becomes legal in the U.S. there will be a decline (or at least not an increase) in the already rare cases of point shaving. We've discussed this multiple times in the past -- even with nationwide legalized sports betting the unregulated offshore/offscreen world will still thrive. And with that, there's the potential to fix games and not be detected. Las Vegas raves about it's ability to "police" irregular line moves. But people who attempt to fix games aren't rushing down to Stations Casino with a duffle bag full of money. They are doing so undetected at countless offscreen sportsbooks across the world so as to not cause any red flags. In the end, regulation is a good thing in that it'll provide your average bettor with access to a safe outlet to gamble. But to a lot of bettors playing at 5Dimes or with a local that provides you a credit account and an offscreen Read more

MLB Handicapping: San Diego Padres struggle with gopher ball

05.21.2015     06:14 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
One of the many perks of FanGraphs is their ability to help baseball bettors better understand when things aren't going according to plan and whether or not we should expect said things to continue. The other day it was the Minnesota Twins and their "ability" to come through in the clutch. Now we have the San Diego Padres who through 41 games can best be described as "ho-hum" as they enter tonight a game under .500. It's no secret that the offense is much improved but the defense stinks and the bullpen has arguably been the worst in baseball. But one of the biggest problems for the Pads has been keeping the ball in the ballpark. The team's HR/FB ratio is on pace for historical levels despite 22 games taking place in Petco Park and nine others in Seattle, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. According to FanGraphs, the high longball rate has cost the team roughly three wins. Now the question becomes, will it continue?

If you can believe it, the Padres have allowed more home runs than any other team in baseball. They’ve allowed two more than the Brewers,

NBA Handicapping: John Wall listed as questionable for Game 5

According to reports there's a small chance John Wall will play. With the series tied 2-2, Atlanta is an 8-point favorite for tonight's Game 5.

"He's moving in the right direction," Wizards coach Randy Wittman said. "The swelling is down again. Minimal swelling. He wanted to dribble the ball a little bit. Get the feel of it here."

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Wizards and Grizzlies have been postseason ATS darlings

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The 2014 NBA Playoffs were something of an exception to the rule, because there were no red hot pointspread runs to open the playoffs.  In most years, one or two teams stand out as postseason pointspread overachievers as the playoffs begin.  This year, for example, we’ve got two of them – the Memphis Grizzlies and the Washington Wizards, a combined 12-3 ATS through the first two rounds.

I first really began paying serious attention to this phenomenon in 2009, when the Denver Nuggets opened up the playoffs on a 12-0 ATS run (11-0-1 ATS for some).  My clients and I were onboard for 11 of those 12 ATS victories; and I vowed to look for and find similar teams in the future – teams that hit their stride in late April after being widely overlooked by both bookmakers and bettors at the start of the postseason for whatever reason.

In 2010, Orlando swept their first two opponents in the playoffs, going 7-0-1 ATS in the process. The Phoenix Suns were also major moneymakers, going 8-2 ATS before running into the Lakers in the Western Conference Finals.  2011 saw the Dallas Mavericks open up the playoffs by cashing at a Read more

NFL Gambling Update: Steelers-Patriots a pick 'em if Brady suspended

05.11.2015     07:50 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

According to various media reports it's likely that Tom Brady will be suspended for his "role" in Deflategate. Every sportsbook offering a Week 1 line took New England's game against Pittsburgh off the board. The Patriots were around -6.5 but if Brady is suspended, Westgate SuperBook oddsmaker Jay Kornegay said the game would likely reopen around a pick 'em.

NHL Playoffs Handicapper Free Play: Montreal Canadiens at Tampa Bay Lightning

Montreal at Tampa Bay -145 O/U 5
Recommendation: Under

Tampa Bay stole two games on the road against the Montreal Canadiens and they look to further dominate the Habs on home ice in Game 3 tonight.  In what was an anomaly of a game on Sunday where the Lightning won 6-2, tonight should get back to the low scoring affairs these two teams are accustomed to.  Tampa has owned this matchup this entire season as it continues to frustrate the Canadians from an offensive standpoint.  Ben Bishop has been tremendous in net for Tampa as he's posted a 1.71 GAA in the postseason and you can expect much of the same from both he and Carey Price tonight.  Both teams have struggled overall during the postseason on the power play.  The Canadians are just 1 for 26 on the man advantage and Tampa Bay was 0 for 23 on the PP before their 4 goal PP performance on Sunday.  A change in scenery should benefit the tight checking style as it has always proven beneficial to play Unders in the third game of a playoff series.  Sunday's 6-2 game was an outlier so expect a close defensive battle tonight in Tampa Bay.

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Drafting quarterbacks in the first round

05.04.2015     08:06 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
To QB or not to QB; that is the question. And when it comes to breaking down the NFL Draft, those QB questions stand paramount.

Jameis Winston was loaded with character questions; a QB with a lack of maturity and poor decision making off the field made his tenure in Tallahassee controversial, to say the least.  Marcus Mariota didn’t have those same character concerns but he can’t match Winston’s full skill set either – there was no ‘Manning- Leaf debate’ over who would go #1 overall between the two prospects.  And yet that duo was drafted #1 and #2 overall by the Bucs and Titans in the NFL draft this past weekend.

There are two basic schools of thought when it comes to taking a QB with a first round pick in the NFL Draft.  One thought is that high draft choice QB busts set the franchise back, often for years.  There are as many (or more) busts as there are QBs that develop into effective starters.  Wasting a first round pick on a QB that doesn’t pan out – particularly when reaching or trading up to acquire the pick – can be nothing short of devastating for a franchise.  Read more

MLB Handicapping: Milwaukee Brewers fire manager Ron Roenicke

05.04.2015     07:35 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Winners of two straight (!) but 11.5 games out of first in the National League Central, the Milwaukee Brewers have decided to part ways with manager Ron Roenicke. Craig Counsell has been named the interim manager. Reports have indicated the Brew Crew are ready to unload some of their aging baggage including Matt Garza, Aramis Ramirez, and Kyle Lohse. The organization has made steps forward in terms of accumulating and developing talent in their system but there is no indication that immediate help is on the way.
