NBA Handicapping: Oddsmakers drop Oklahoma City Thunder 3.5 wins with Durant out

10.21.2014     01:17 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Prior to Kevin Durant's foot injury, the Oklahoma City Thunder were lined at 57.5 wins according to the Westgate Sportsbook. That line was obviously taken down but with the general consensus that Druant will miss as much as six weeks, oddsmakers have reopened with a new number. Pinnacle dropped the Thunder's win total 3.5 wins to 54 with -120 juice towards the under.

Atlanta Falcons
Since blowing out Tampa Bay on national TV in Week 3, the Atlanta Falcons have looked nothing short of awful.  A team that made it to the NFC Championship Game two years ago is now entrenched in a four game skid; picking up right where they left off last year when they went 4-12 and ranked among the most disappointing teams in football.

All four losses during this SU and ATS skid have come by double digit margins.  The Falcons certainly aren’t going to win many defensive struggles – their stop unit has allowed 24+ six times in seven ballgames this year, a mediocre defense on a good day.  But many pundits thought the Falcons would be good enough to trade points with most of their foes.  That simply hasn’t been the case, in large part, due to cluster injuries on the offensive line, with backup center Peter Konz the latest to go down.

Matt Ryan was sacked five times and hit nine times in Atlanta’s loss to Baltimore on Sunday, while throwing for a season low in yards. "When you go out there and get beat soundly, I think everybody knows we've got to play better across the board. Read more

College Football Betting Alert: Early steam has Miami favored at Virginia Tech

10.20.2014     11:19 AM     Printer Friendly
Weird goings on with Virginia Tech in the betting markets. Last Thursday, the Hokies opened -3 at Pitt. The Panthers were bet up to -2 but VT closed -1. This week, Tech opened -3 for Thursday's game against Miami (the Hurricanes come in off of a bye). We've seen nothing but Miami money with the 'Canes now -3.

College Football Gambling Alert: Florida State reopens -10 vs. Notre Dame

10.17.2014     02:17 PM     Printer Friendly
Despite no official work on Jameis Winston's status, various offshore and Las Vegas sportsbooks have hung a pointspread (no total) on Saturday's Notre Dame vs. Florida State game. Below is CRIS's line history since reopening the game earlier this afternoon. Note that Sunday night's opener was FSU -12.5.

Notre Dame at Florida State
Saturday, 5 pm PT - ABC
CRIS Opener:
Florida State -12.5
CRIS Current: No Line
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Florida State -12.5
Ian Cameron's Recommendation: Notre Dame

We have no line posted as of yet for Saturday’s showdown between Notre Dame and Florida State due to the status of Jameis Winston. Winston, who has already been in his share of off the field distractions, is now being investigating whether he accepted payment for signing memorabilia. Winston claims he wasn’t paid. FSU coach Jimbo Fisher maintains that he believes his quarterback. Either way, Winston is “expected” to play but no confirmation has been made as of this writing.

Notre Dame has not had many problems moving the football this season, with the Irish averaging 444.3 yards per game. Everett Golson is completing 62.5% of his passes, for 1,683 yards and 16 TDs to Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Missouri Tigers at Florida Gators

Missouri at Florida
Saturday, 4 pm PT - ESPN2
CRIS Opener:
Florida -4 O/U 49.5
CRIS Current: Florida -6 O/U 49.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Florida -1.5
OTTO Sports’ Recommendation: Missouri

We're halfway through the college football season and the beauty of the betting markets is the increased amount of varying opinions. Some bettors go on feel and what they see whereas others plug in a power rating and mechanically play what spits out. Either way it creates situations where value is created not because of oddsmakers but because of line moves. The Florida-Missouri game is a good example. The Tigers opened a respectable +4 but are now as high as +6. That may not seem like a significant move but considering three of the Gators' four SEC games were decided by a field goal, a point, and overtime, it could very easily be the difference between an ATS win or loss.

College Football Gambling Update: Syracuse offense remains work in progress

10.14.2014     01:47 PM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Not a bad effort from Syracuse's offense following the injury to starting quarterback Terre Hunt and demotion of offensive coordinator George McDonald. The Orange racked up 412 yards on 6.15 ypp in last week's 38-20 loss to Florida State. The problem of scoring touchdowns in the red zone, however, remains. Both of Syracuse's touchdowns came on long pass plays once the game was out of reach. On the season, their red zone touchdown rate is 39% which ranked 122nd nationally.

"There'll be some wrinkles and changes, and some philosophical things," Shafer said, "but right now we're really focusing in on 1. Game-planning week-to-week with the players we have, and 2. Trying to develop some of the kids who aren't playing yet and trying to see if they can do some of those things as we move into our recruiting process."

College Football Betting News: NC State suspends two starters

10.14.2014     01:33 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We've seen Louisville bet up from -14 to -17 following news of seven NC State players, including two starters, suspended for Saturday's game. The Wolfpack will be without starting linebacker Jerod Fernandez and safety Justin Jones. Two other players were listed on the two-deep. Bad timing for NC State after back-to-back blowout losses to Clemson and Boston College.

"These are good young men who made a mistake in not recognizing that this activity could have resulted in someone being injured," Doeren said in a statement. "We have discussed this with them and they understand that they are being held responsible for their actions. The information was referred to the university's office of student conduct as well. Our players admitted their mistake and we will help them learn from it as well."

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: NFL has longstanding relationship with gambling Part 2

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Last week, I wrote about the NFL’s origins: a league designed by gamblers for gamblers.  Heck, the games are still played at 1 pm on Sundays here in 2014, just as they were 80 years ago, because the old Blue Laws forced horse tracks to close on Sundays and the league’s original owners wanted to offer bettors a place to gamble after church every week.

This week’ I’ll be leaving the early days behind, picking up the story with the infamous 1958 Championship Game between the Colts and Giants – the game that really put the NFL on the map when it comes to national television exposure (and ratings).

The 1958 championship between the Baltimore Colts and the New York Giants has been called the "Greatest Game in NFL History."  The overtime thriller was nationally televised, and drew enormous ratings with forty million Americans tuning in, spurring the league’s incredible growth over the next decade.
