The argument for legalized betting on college sports rages on

06.30.2015     09:16 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Another article on the pros and cons of legalized sports betting on college athletics.

“While there is a potential seamy underside and chances of point shaving, (sports gambling) is not going away,” said Ohio University associate professor David Ridpath, president of the West Haven, Conn.-based Drake Group, which supports reform in college athletics. “Keeping it regulated and in the open, I think, will make it more above board.”

“You can't get the starting running back at USC to accept a gambling bribe to shave points because they're going to throw away an NFL contract,” said Central Michigan professor Tim Otteman, who specializes in sports betting in college athletics. “But if you're going to offer (a starter) at Toledo or Central Michigan $10,000 when they're going to graduate and make $35,000 as a teacher, they probably have the ability to potentially do that.”

Phil Mickelson tied to illegal gambling outfit

06.30.2015     08:46 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Everyone is pretty much aware that Phil Mickelson likes to gamble. This, however, we did not know...

But a 56-year-old former sports gambling handicapper, acting as a conduit for an offshore gambling operation, pleaded guilty last week to laundering approximately $2.75 million of money that two sources told Outside the Lines belonged to Mickelson.

The money, according to the documents, came from a "gambling client" and had been transferred into Silveira's Wells Fargo Bank account. Three days later, Silveira transferred $2.475 million and then $275,000 into another of his Wells Fargo accounts. The next day, Silveira transferred the $2.475 million to another account he controlled at JPMorgan Chase Bank.

MLB Gambling News: Documents show Rose bet while as a player

06.22.2015     02:03 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
This shouldn't come as a shock but Pete Rose did in fact bet on baseball as a player. Rose initially denied any sort of gambling but then softened his stance admitting that it took place while he was a manager. But according to ESPN's Outside the Lines, documents show that while as a player, Rose was pretty much betting on everything, including his own team.

"We knew that [Bertolini] recorded the bets, and that he bet himself, but we never had his records. We tried to get them. He refused to give them to us," Dowd said. "This is the final piece of the puzzle on a New York betting operation with organized crime. And, of course, [Rose] betting while he was a player."

MLB Gambling Update: Red Sox getting heavy play in the betting markets

06.15.2015     10:32 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

There's no possible way it can get worse for the Boston Red Sox, right? After getting swept by Baltimore, they accomplished the dubious feat again this past weekend at the hands of recently unstoppable Toronto Blue Jays. The Red Sox are an intriguing study because despite being eight games out of first place, there are no dominant teams in the American League East. Boston has a small window of opportunity with a four-game (two home, two road) set vs. Atlanta. But then it's back to the grind with a three-game series in Kansas City and then 10 straight vs. the AL East -- 7 of which on the road. We've noticed the betting markets have been fairly active in fading this squad but that's not case for tonight's game vs. the Braves. Rick Porcello opened -130 at Pinnacle and was bet up to -170. Not too often you see a 40 cent move towards a last place team in such poor form.

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: The Curious Case of the Philadelphia Eagles

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It’s not hard to predict which NFL teams are going to be the betting favorites coming into the campaign.  Look no further than the NFL Season Win Totals markets.  Just about all of the top teams – teams lined at nine wins or higher – have one commonality.  In a quarterback’s league, they all have top tier quarterbacks.

Baltimore has Joe Flacco.  Dallas has Tony Romo.  Denver has Peyton Manning.  Green Bay has Aaron Rodgers.  Indianapolis has Andrew Luck.  New England has Tom Brady.  New Orleans has Drew Brees.  Seattle has Russell Wilson.  That’s eight of the ten teams that are lined at 9 wins or higher this year; all squad with elite level quarterbacks.  Miami, with the promising Ryan Tannehill firmly entrenched as the starting QB, is lined at nine wins in many locations as well (8.5 with juice to the over in others).

And then there’s Philadelphia, lined at 9.5 wins in most locations.  The Eagles have Sam Bradford and Mark Sanchez battling for the starting job.  With Bradford – their big offseason pickup and the former #1 overall draft choice from 2010 Read more

NFL gets pissy over Fantasy Football convention in Las Vegas

06.10.2015     08:29 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It doesn't get anymore NFL than this. A bunch of players were slated to host a Fantasy Sports event at a Las Vegas casino but the league stepped in and kiboshed the whole deal. The reason? Because it was slated to take place at a casino which is a no-no according to the league. The real reason, as pointed out by one of the slated attendees, Tony Romo, was of course money. The NFL makes a shit-ton of cash off of fantasy football but reportedly didn't stand to make a dime, hence the cancellation.

"There's just far too many cases and it does make it sound sometimes that it's an issue about money, which is disappointing because we were just trying to get the fans to hang out with players."

Las Vegas sportsbooks to take syndicate bets

06.09.2015     08:30 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It was recently announced that Las Vegas sportsbooks will legally be able to take bets from "business" groups. It's an interesting move considering the number of operations that already limit individual players who win and/or bet big. The new law states that the group must maintain a bank account within the state of Nevada and are obviously subject to taxation.

"It will be a choice of the various books and their appetite for risk. The same way it is today," Lipparelli said. "They determine what level of risk they want to accept. It's their right to refuse service to anyone they wish, if they determine that somehow they feel that this is going to be too difficult, too risky for them, they may elect to stay out of it."

MLB Handicapper Free Play: Milwaukee Brewers at Minnesota Twins

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Milwaukee (Fiers) at Minnesota (Pelfrey) +100 O/U 8.5
Recommendation: Minnesota

I've slowly started to accept some of Mike Fiers' success this season but don't feel as if it is sustainable and certainly don't think he warrants being a favorite in an American League park. Fiers has a lot to like: high K rate (10.7 per 9), solid FIP (3.45), and lots of deception which can make first looks difficult. But he'll take a step up in class today with the Twins a fairly capable offense. Keep an eye on the long ball today as well with warm temps and the wind blowing out to left. Fiers, of course, is an extreme fly ball pitcher. Minnesota's Mike Pelfrey meanwhile shows a dismal K rate (4.12), a so-so FIP (4.14), and a long track record of being a below average starter. But Pelfrey has figured some things out and really embraced the ground ball mantra which can be the elixir for pitchers who don't miss bats. He ranks 7th out of qualified starters (55.8% GB rate) and as a result has down an excellent job at keep the ball in the park with three home runs allowed including not one at Target Field. The Twins have without question overachieved to this point and were Read more

American Pharoah looks sharp in final workout

06.01.2015     01:18 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
All aboard the American Pharoah bandwagon. And it's not just the general public who digs the bay colt. A number of offshore sportsbooks have A-Phar a -125 favorite to win Saturday's Belmont Stakes and thus become the first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978. His latest workout was deemed "effortless" according to his trainer. Note that last year California Chrome was in this same position and priced around even money but finished fourth.

"So effortless," he said after American Pharoah had flown through five furlongs in 1 minute and galloped out strongly after that, in the colt's final major workout before being shipped to New York on Tuesday for the Belmont Stakes and a shot at the excruciatingly elusive Triple Crown. "He is something else."

Basketball coach accused of betting against his own team

05.26.2015     09:12 AM     Printer Friendly
Nothing beats a good match fixing story, especially when it involves the Korean Basketball League. A head coach was reportedly floated a large line of credit and cashed in big betting against his own team.
