NBA Gambling Alert: Flu bug hits Memphis Grizzlies

11.19.2014     01:47 PM     Printer Friendly
The media has yet to report on it but according to our Sports Options odds screen (and the line movement) there could be a number of Memphis players out with the flu for tonight's game vs. Toronto. The Raptors opened -3 and have been bet up to as high as -5.

NBA Handicapping: Cleveland Cavaliers still miles away defensively

11.19.2014     01:23 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Good article of Cleveland's defensive shortcomings thus far. The Cavs currently ranked tied for 25th in defensive efficiency (108.3). Tonight's opponent, San Antonio, ranks third at 96.0.

“I don’t think it’s something you learn on the fly,” James said Wednesday. “I think it’s something you work on every single day. You teach it, you preach it, you demand it. I didn’t come [into the NBA] as being a big defensive guy. I played defense and my high school coaches did preach it, and we knew in order to win, we had to defend. This is a different level.

“You have to raise the level of expectation,” Blatt said the other day, “and the level of accountability, and you have to make the whole greater than the sum of its parts. Sometimes if you’re not blessed with great individual defenders, your principles have to be that much stronger, and your helps and your court recognition have to be that much better. And that’s why it’s taken us longer in that area of the game than on Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Louisville Cardinals at Notre Dame Fighting Irish

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Louisville at Notre Dame
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - NBC
CRIS Opener:
Notre Dame -4.5 O/U 54.5
CRIS Current: Notre Dame -3.5 O/U 53
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Notre Dame -5.5
Andrew Lange's Recommendation: See analysis

I've mentioned on multiple occasions that Louisville's defense, while certainly stout, has benefited greatly from a weak slate of opposing offenses and quarterbacks. The only truly potent offense and quarterback combo the Cardinals have faced is Florida State who racked up 42 points and 574 yards. From a total offense standpoint, at 28th nationally, Notre Dame will mark the "best" offense UL has faced to date. Most, including myself, would probably take the Seminoles' offense over the Irish but the point remains that unlike a majority of Louisville's opposition, Notre Dame has proven capable of moving the football.

But while moving the football hasn't been a Read more

College Football Beting: Former Texas Tech DC accused of treason

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Can we interest you in the story of an alleged disgruntled former defensive coordinator giving away info on play calls? Enjoy...

“They have,” Smith said. “They have been passed around. ... I know other coaches have called and our signals have been passed around the whole time. All I know is karma’s a bad deal.

“I don’t want to get into what’s going on with all that, but it’s not right and, to me, it’s not fair to the kids. So if that’s how that person wants to handle business, they can handle business that way. I sure hope I don’t run into him anytime soon.”

College Footbal Betting Preview: Florida State Seminoles at Miami Hurricanes

Florida State at Miami (FL)
Saturday, 5 pm PT - ABC
CRIS Opener:
Florida State -2.5 O/U 61.5
CRIS Current: Florida State -2.5 O/U 63
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Florida State -6
Rob Veno's Recommendation: Florida State

We saw Florida State in nearly exact situation a couple weeks back when they were very short road favorites at Louisville. The Cardinals offense was back to full strength and the pointspread tumbled from an opener of -7 to -3.5. The Seminoles have been a severe money burner to this point in the season posting a 2-7 ATS mark laying -9.5 or more in eight of their nine games. While the heavy price tags have been nearly impossible to cover, we all saw the Louisville result which makes it very difficult to fade FSU in a game they just have to win by a field goal. My power ratings list Florida State as -6 which again screams of déjà vu since they had the ‘Noles Read more

College Basketball Handicapping: Returning Starter Breakdown

11.14.2014     07:21 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Below is a list of teams with zero or five returning starters according to Blue Ribbon. Two schools of thought: with all the transferring going on these days it is easy to have no returning starters but in reality possess a fair amount of experience with guys that started or played significant minutes at their previous school. Second, five returning starters like 18+ returning starters in football is often overvalued in the betting markets. Is five returning starters for Southern Utah a good thing? If they don't have at least a few new recruits starting then we would say no even when you account for natural year-to-year improvement.

College Football Gambling: Oklahoma saying right things following Baylor embarrassment

11.13.2014     06:39 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Playing for pride is not something you often hear associated with Oklahoma but after last week's 48-14 loss to Baylor, the Sooners have three losses and two non-descript games against Texas Tech and Kansas upcoming before what is likely to be a ho-hum Battle of Bedlam. The team of course is saying all the right things heading into Saturday's game at Texas Tech. No line yet to do the questionable status of Sooners quarterback Trevor Knight.

"You have to win," defensive lineman Chuka Ndulue said. "That's the mentality. Because your goals are out the window now, it doesn't mean you have to go out there and give up on everything. There's still some pride that goes around the team. We want to accomplish finishing the season off on a high note and that's what we are going to do."

College Football Betting Preview: Nebraska Cornhuskers at Wisconsin Badgers

Nebraska at Wisconsin
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - ABC
CRIS Opener:
Wisconsin -6 O/U 55.5
CRIS Current: Wisconsin -6 O/U 57
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Wisconsin -4
OTTO Sports' Recommndation: Under

Big battle in the Big Ten with Nebraska and Wisconsin both 4-1 in league play and in the hunt for the West Division title. This time of year we as bettors have a tendency to focus in on the conference-only statistics but in this case, because of strength of schedule, it’s hard to conclude just how good these two team are.

Wisconsin is currently a ridiculous +2.93 ypp in conference play; the type of stat you see attached to national title contenders which this team is not. The reason of course is UW's super-soft schedule. If you were to name the top four teams in the Big Ten outside of Wisky you'd probably come up with Ohio State, Michigan State, Nebraska, and Minnesota. Wisconsin hasn't Read more

College Football Gambling Update: A look back at Florida State's Game of the Year pointspreads

11.11.2014     07:47 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Quick look back at the Golden Nugget Game of the Year pointspreads on Florida State. Off last year’s National Championship and with a lot of starters/talent returning, the Seminoles were priced extremely high. Fast forward to the regular season and while FSU is undefeated from a straight up perspective, they've obviously fell well short of expectations and have not covered a single GOY pointspread. Those bettors who were proactive and faded the Seminoles during the summer have had been in some very favorable situations the this season.

Golden Nugget GOY Lines
FSU -17 vs. Oklahoma State (at Arlington) - ATS Loss
FSU -17 vs. Clemson - ATS Loss
FSU -30 at NC State - ATS Loss
FSU -21 at Syracuse - ATS Loss
FSU -24 vs. Notre Dame - ATS Loss
FSU -17 at Louisville - ATS Loss
FSU -14.5 at Miami - ???

Actual Closing Lines
FSU -18 vs. Oklahoma State - ATS Loss
FSU -9.5 vs. Clemson - ATS Loss
FSU -16.5 at NC State - ATS Loss
FSU -23 at Read more

College Football Gambling: Your obligatory Jameis Winston point shaving scandal

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Considering Jameis Winston's off-the-field troubles and Florida State's shorting comings against the spread (2-6), we're actually kind of shocked it took until Week 11 for TMZ to report an almost assuredly bogus Winston/Seminole point shaving scandal. Someone clearly asleep at the wheel.
