NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Tampa Bay Lightning at Toronto Maple Leafs

Tampa Bay -130 at Toronto O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Over

The Toronto Maple Leafs return home tonight to host fellow Atlantic Division foe, the Tampa Bay Lightning. Toronto has been very competitive to open the year despite its 1-1-3 record. The Leafs earned five points in six games which is an improvement from their 1-7-2 start to open last season. First overall pick Auston Matthews has been on fire, scoring five goals and dishing out three assists in his first five games. He's accounted for nearly a third of the Leafs' overall scoring. Tampa Bay started the season with four straight home games (3-1). They now continue a six-game road trek after winning their opening contest 4-1 over Ottawa. The Lightning have been getting offensive contributions throughout the lineup, which is typically the norm with this club. Nine different skaters have lit the lamp in five games with center Alex Killorn leading the club with four goals. The Maple Leafs are 3-0-2 O/U thus far, while Tampa is only 2-2-1 O/U but have scored three or more goals in each game. The Bolts have won 7 Read more

Legalized sports betting remains hot topic but no sign of real progress

10.21.2016     09:57 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
More talk about the need to update laws on sports betting. And we can't emphasize "talk" enough as the article goes on to say, "...did not provide a timeline for the new legislation." Again, there appears to be a growing list of folks jumping on board the legalized sports betting crusade and yet the light at the end of tunnel remains barely light.

"The laws need a wholesale review to see how they can actually work together and create a fairer playing field for all types of gambling, both online and offline, including sports betting and daily fantasy sports," said Pallone, the ranking Democrat in the House Energy and Commerce Committee. "At the same time, we must ensure the laws are actually creating an environment of integrity and accountability, and include strong consumer protections. I plan to continue discussions with the key stakeholders and then will introduce comprehensive legislation to finally update these outdated laws."

Off of last week’s winner with the Wake Forest-Florida State “under”, ACC free plays now stand at 5-1-1 on the season. This week the conference has only four games with six of its teams on a bye week but they are all still meaningful. Syracuse goes to Boston College in what shapes up as a bowl bid elimination game since the team which loses this one realistically has no shot at getting to six wins. The Orange enter off of an improbable 31-17 home upset win over Virginia Tech as +22.5 point underdogs. In that contest, the extreme tempo ran 100 plays from scrimmage resulting in 32 first downs, 10-of-21, 47.6% on third down conversions, and 561 total yards which were all season highs posted against Virginia Tech’s defense. Meanwhile, Boston College had a bye last week after being steamrolled 56-10 by Clemson . Their top-ranked total yards against defense was torched for 503 yards in that contest. The Eagles offense was bas as well Read more

NFL Gambling: Baltimore Ravens take more shots downfield under Mornhinweg

10.18.2016     07:21 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Improvements in the passing game for the Baltimore Ravens in its first game under offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg. Despite working behind a banged up offensive line, Joe Flacco took more shots down field en route to a season-high 307 yards. The Ravens (3-3) travel to New York to take on the Jets this week. The Jets rank second-to-last in the NFL in yards per attempt allowed (8.4).

College Football Handicapping: Betting markets continue to hammer Louisville Cardinals

10.18.2016     06:24 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Ever since beating Charlotte 70-14 in Week 1, Louisville has been one of the most popular teams in the betting markets. Just take a look at the opening and closing numbers of their last six games. On average, Louisville has been bet over 4 points per game. It reminds us a little of last year's Clemson team that burst on to the scene with a bunch of impressive early season wins and covers and went 0-for-November against the spread.

College Football Betting Preview: Wake Forest Demon Deacons at Florida State Seminoles

Wake Forest at Florida State
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener:
Florida State -23.5 O/U 54
CRIS Current: Florida State -21 O/U 53
Recommendation: Under

FSU escaped Miami with a 20-19 victory when the Hurricanes missed a game-tying extra point late in the fourth quarter. FSU now comes home to face a tough defensive-minded Wake Forest team. Although FSU will be coached not to overlook the Demon Deacons having the same focus and effort that its had against Miami could be difficult. The Seminoles enter this game with a bunch of injuries plus starting linebacker Matthew Thomas will serve a first half suspension (ejected for targeting last week). Adding pressure to the secondary which has been unsteady since the loss of star CB Derwin James four weeks ago is the loss of starting FS Nate Andrews (45 career games, 24 starts) who has been lost for the season after tearing a pectoral muscle last Saturday.

Wake Forest meanwhile played through and to some extent used adverse weather conditions at home last week to defeat up-tempo Syracuse, 28-9.  The Demon Deacons defense played very well and Read more

Gambling Update: CG Technology forks over $22 million in fines

10.05.2016     09:07 AM     Printer Friendly

CG Technology agreed to pay $22.5 million in fines for its involvement in the infamous 2012 money laundering scheme.

“Cantor Gaming quickly grew into one of the largest race and sports book operators in the United States,” Robert L. Capers, the United States attorney for the Eastern District of New York, which includes Brooklyn, said in a statement. “Unacceptably, this growth came at the expense of compliance with the law, and as a result Cantor Gaming became a place where at least two large-scale illegal bookmakers could launder their ill-gotten proceeds.”

Syracuse at Wake Forest
Saturday, 4 pm PT
CRIS Opener:
Wake Forest -3 O/U 56
CRIS Current: Wake Forest -3 O/U 54
Recommendation: Wake Forest

Game time of 7 pm local on Saturday night is important here because rain figures to be a significant factor due to the looming tropical storm. That should make this a very sloppy track which likely bothers the extreme tempo of Syracuse. Rain is projected to be steady on Saturday and intensify as the day goes on brings ball handling on each end of the passing game into play. I expect Dino Babers to level his play calling a bit and work in more of the ground game. The Fieldturf surface here at BB&T Field doesn’t present the same degree of offensive limitation that natural grass would but nonetheless the steady rain will probably dictate some changes.

Wake Forest has been solid on the ground this season against foes who they can push around and the Syracuse run defense fits that bill (205 ypg allowed). The Demon Deacons play calling percentages is just a tick over 60/40 for the season and they will use the run to shorten the game and keep the Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Wake Forest Demon Deacons at NC State Wolfpack

Wake Forest at NC State
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT
CRIS Opener:
NC State -9 O/U 51.5
CRIS Current: NC State -11 O/U 48.5
Recommendation: Under

On a perfect 3-0 run with the ACC free play involving the Pittsburgh Panthers, I’ll shift away and tap into an Atlantic Division contest. Situational edge here goes to the Wolfpack which enter the game off of a bye week. Last season NC State had the same bye week situation and won 35-17 in Winston Salem. That could be where the similarities end because at this juncture of the season, the fundamentals in this matchup look a bit different.

In their late October meeting last season, NC State running back Matt Dayes ran wild scoring two touchdowns of 50+ yards and gaining 205 overall. Dayes and the NC State ground game have had a strong start to this season (210.7 ypg) but the Wake Forest run defense has been a rock allowing just 88.5 rypg and 2.7 per carry. What has been vulnerable is the Demon Deacons pass defense which has yielded an average of 414 ypg in contests versus Duke and Indiana. Wake Forest’s other two games were Read more

NFL Handicapping: First-year quarterbacks continue to cover pointspreads

09.27.2016     06:49 AM     ICC     Printer Friendly
Submitted by ICC blog entry.
For my very first weekly entry discussing the NFL from a betting perspective, I decided to focus on the success rate of first-year and/or rookie starting quarterbacks. For decades, conventional wisdom pointed toward betting against “green” quarterbacks. But there has been a paradigm shift in that regard so far in 2016. There have been six quarterbacks that have made their first ever start in the NFL: Trevor Siemian (Denver), Carson Wentz (Philadelphia), Dak Prescott (Dallas), Jimmy Garoppolo (New England), Jacoby Brissett (New England) and Cody Kessler (Cleveland). Siemien and Wentz appear to be the only two poised to be starter for the duration of the season while others are simply keeping the seat warm. Nevertheless, the collective amount of success from that group through three weeks of the season, specifically from a pointspread perspective, is impressive.

Denver, New England, and Philadelphia are all 3-0 SU/ATS. Dallas is a solid 2-1 SU/ATS. And Cleveland lost to Miami in overtime last week as +9.5 underdogs. The aforementioned group of signal callers have a combined for a 65.7% completion rate and a 15-to-3 TD-to-INT ratio (all 3 INTs via Siemian). They Read more
