Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Spurs could be in trouble following Game 1 loss

04.20.2015     07:55 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers blog entry.
The San Antonio Spurs opened their defense of their NBA Championship run from last year with a blowout loss on the road at the Staples Center in LA against the Clippers.  That Game 1 and the series against the Clips featured some EXTREMELY unusual betting action here in Las Vegas and offshore – money coming on one team (the Clippers) for Game 1 while coming on the other team (San Antonio) for the series.  I can’t recall any previous series in my 17 basketball seasons here in Las Vegas where the Game 1 favorite was not the favorite to win the series.  The betting action was a clear indicator of the respect bettors have for San Antonio heading into the 2015 postseason.

But following that Game 1 debacle, the Spurs aren’t favored to win the series anymore, with the adjusted series prices popping up following Game 1 showing LA as short chalk moving forward. The question bettors and pundits need to be asking is a simple one.  Was the Spurs Game 1 loss simply a bump in the road for this perennial championship contender or was it an "end of an era" indicator, telling us that the Spurs are "fade" material moving Read more

AGA wants law enforcement to spend more time (and money) going after illegal gambling

04.14.2015     06:45 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
The American Gaming Association announced that it wants to ramp up its efforts on curbing illegal gambling. Sounds like it's time to dial up a few scare tactics!

“The illegal gambling industry is fueling criminal networks and large criminal enterprises that profoundly harm your state, your schools, your consumers and your law enforcement,” Freeman said, according to his prepared remarks.

“Consider the fact that every dollar diverted by illegal operations is a dollar siphoned away from legal activities that contribute taxes to support education and public safety,” he said in his prepared remarks.

MLB Handicapper Free Play: Tampa Bay Rays at Miami Marlins

Tampa Bay (Geltz) at Miami (Haren) O/U 7.5
Recommendation: Over

We have a unique pitching situation here in Miami as the Rays and Marlins open up their weekend series. Tampa Bay will be going with Steven Geltz and according to reports he’ll be limited to just a few innings before turning it over to the tandem of Erasmo Ramirez and Matt Andriese. Geltz had a 2.38 ERA in 29 minor league appearances last year and only pitched 8.1 innings with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2014 with a 3.24 ERA. Andriese, a 2011 San Diego Padres draft pick, has never pitched in the majors. Ramirez was acquired March 31st from Seattle after going 1-6 with a 5.26 ERA in 17 appearances including 14 starts. He failed to make Seattle's rotation in spring training last year. Put it all together and that is a trio of pitchers that I don’t exactly trust to get outs and shut down a Marlins lineup poised to break out of their slump. On the flip side, it will be veteran Dan Haren getting start for the Miami Marlins. Haren has been high up on my ‘bet against’ list of pitchers in recent seasons with declining velocity and lacking the ability to miss bats. Haren had a Read more

NCAA Tournament Gambling: Public bettors like Wisconsin over Duke

04.06.2015     01:57 PM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Looks like the betting markets have settled in for tonight's NCAA Tournament Championship between top seeds Wisconsin and Duke. The game opened a pick 'em with the Badgers now -1 at virtually every offshore and Las Vegas sportsbook. A ew Vegas books (Golden Nugget, Coasts) have Wisky -1.5. Same deal with the total with most shops offering 140 with a few at 140.5. According to Sports Options, 59% of the "public" money is on Wisconsin while 64% prefers the over.  Las Vegas' MGM said they have written twice as many tickets on the Badgers than Duke.

Money on Pacquiao has Mayweather now less than a -200 favorite

04.03.2015     08:11 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
The betting handle for next month's Mayweather vs. Pacquiao continues to climb according to various Las Vegas oddsmakers. The price on Mayweather though continues to drop with less than -200 widely in Vegas and offshore.

"Public on the dog," said Art Manteris, sportsbook director of Station Casinos and a boxing expert. "Some of the best sports handicappers and guys I respect the most are on the favorite. I'm just not sure I agree with them this time."

MLB Gambling Update: Cosart says he's never bet on baseball

04.02.2015     07:38 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Update of an update. Miami's Jarred Cosart claims to have never bet on baseball which we have no reason not to believe. However, he still hasn't used "my Twitter account was hacked" as an excuse for the questionable Tweets which means he's probably betting on other sports -- a perfectly legal pastime according the MLB rules.

"I told all these guys, I never have, never will bet on baseball," he said, according to the Miami Herald. "That's the only statement I can come out with right now. I'm letting MLB security [handle the rest]. They've investigated my Twitter. I had to speak to some people from their offices last week, but I'm in a good position on it, I'm confident. Like I said, it's kind of just in the commissioner's hands now and we'll see what he does with it."

NCAA Tournament Gambling: Bettor stands to win $1 million on Sparty

03.31.2015     07:53 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
This is pretty impressive. Not that someone made the bet but that a Las Vegas sportsbook actually took the action.

"In my nine years at this sportsbook, I never accepted a bet that could result in us paying $1 million," Miller said. "The most I've ever seen won here was a $100,000 parlay."

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Bettors gear up for Final Four

03.30.2015     08:17 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers blog entry.
The dust has settled from the madness that is March, with only four teams still standing in the NCAA Tournament.  And frankly, since the insanity of that opening Thursday morning when top seeds were falling like flies (Baylor, Iowa State, SMU), this tournament has not seen a bevy of upsets.

In fact, the Vegas favorite advanced in 48 of the last 54 Big Dance games (48-6 SU, not ATS) since midday on the opening day of the tourney.  For only the second time this century, three #1 seeds reached the Final Four.  In this week’s Wiseguy Report I’m going to try to answer the question that everybody is asking: can anybody beat Kentucky; winners of 38 consecutive ballgames since the start of the season.

Since Kentucky is the most hyped team in recent memory, I’ll start with the Wildcats first.  Yes, this team won the title in 2012, going 4-2 ATS in the process during the Big Dance.  Yes, they reached the championship game last year; an undervalued commodity in March as they covered all four pointspreads on the way to the Final Four.

But this year’s Kentucky team has simply gotten too much Read more

Sportsmemo's MLB Betting Preview: Tampa Bay Rays

03.27.2015     06:50 AM     Printer Friendly

The Tampa Bay Rays have started plenty of seasons with the 'on-paper' look of a .500 ballclub only to exceed expectations. But they'll need to overachieve in a number of areas if they want to avoid finishing at the bottom of the AL East.

Tampa Bay Rays
2014 W-L:
2014 O/U: 74-79-9
2014 Profits: -26.5
2015 O/U Wins: 79.5
2015 AL East Odds: +600
Projected Starting Rotation: Alex Cobb, Matt Moore, Chris Archer, Jake Ordorizzi, Drew Smyly
Key Departures: Ben Zobrist, Will Myers, Matt Joyce
Key Additions: John Jaso, Keven Jepsen, Steven Souza

Handicapper's Take: "Looks to be somewhat of a transition year for Tampa Bay following the departure of a number of key players and manager Joe Maddon. And while the organization has a strong pedigree of being able to replace talent with talent, the Rays' farm system (24th according to Baseball Prospectus) isn't nearly as strong as it was 4-5 year ago. Offensively, they grade out as the Read more

The one where Jarred Cosart is accused of being a sports bettor

03.25.2015     08:44 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Well this is interesting -- and probably a hoax. The Twitter account of Miami Marlins pitcher Jarred Cosart went sorta crazy yesterday with talk of sports betting. That in turn led to every one of Cosart’s poor starts being labeled as an “obvious” fix.
