Gambling Update: Billy Walters insider trading case reveals new twist

UPDATE

The Billy Walters insider trading story just got more interesting following reports that one of the accused tossed a burner cell phone into a creek.

"I did so with the intent both to impair the integrity of the cellular phone and to make it unavailable for any subsequent criminal proceeding," said Davis, who pleaded guilty at the hearing to charges including securities fraud.

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Prepping for the College Football season

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
My summer homework progression is simple.  I do my NFL work first, because not that much changes in the professional ranks over the summer.  Once we’re done with the draft and the initial free agent signing period, it’s easy to make preliminary assessments of all 32 NFL teams.  While the season win total market is still a long way from true maturity, we do have a pretty good sense of two things.  First, how the 32 teams are projected, power ratings wise and second, how tough a team’s schedule is going to be.

When it comes to college football, I don’t do much until after the MLB All-Star break, and the majority of my college football prep comes in August.  Why the difference?  Simple – a lot more changes in college over the summer, and I’m not a big fan of doing the same work twice!  The depth charts that you’re going to see popping up in all the college football preview publications were accurate at the end of spring camp.  By mid-August, they’re essentially obsolete.

There are many more players moving up and down the depth charts in college.  There are more Read more

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Billy Walters was arrested on Wednesday for his alleged involvement in an insider trading scheme.

“Bill Walters is a true American success story, whose extraordinary accomplishments as a lawful sports gambler have been widely recognized and lauded,” the lawyer, Barry Berke, said in a statement. “Mr. Walters and his counsel look forward to his day in court where it will be shown that the prosecutors’ accusations are based on erroneous assumptions, speculative theories and false finger-pointing.”

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Bettors must be willing to change opinions on the fly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Successful sportsbettors are not politicians.   Politicians take heat every time they change their opinion – flip-floppers!  A politician who is pro-choice on abortion, for example, will take enormous criticism from both sides, and will probably lose his or her next election if he or she switches to a pro-life stance.

Sports bettors, like politicians, are inevitably going to have some wrong opinions – about teams, about players, about coaches.  Bill Belichick was not a great coach with the Cleveland Browns, and was not highly regarded after suffering a losing campaign in his first year.  Greg Popovich certainly wasn’t a high profile, top notch hire when the Spurs decided he should be their head coach.  The Carolina Panthers weren’t taken seriously by most NFL analysts last year until they reached the Super Bowl.  Steph Curry wasn’t a superstar...until he was.
Throughout the world of sports and sportsbetting, everybody – E-V-E-R-Y-B-O-D-Y! – is going to have some wrong opinions.  But the differences in how bettors deal with those wrong opinions is fairly dramatic; often the Read more

Former sportsbook owner accepts deal, avoids jail

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Here's a blast from the past. Remember WSEX? It used to be a big player in the offshore sportsbook scene prior to its owners getting pinched. One of them committed suicide, another is still on the lam, and another, Haden Waren, recently accepted six months of probation in lieu of jail time.

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: How to Handicap NFL Season Over/Under Wins Part II

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Last week, I wrote about how taking a look back at EXACTLY what happened throughout the course of the 2015 season can help bettors create more accurate opening power ratings for the 32 NFL teams for the upcoming 2016 campaign.  Instead of looking at aggregate numbers compiled at the end of the season, my methodology here is to track strength of schedule based on power ratings on the week the games were played.

Taking the time to do that accurately gives bettors a much better idea of how a team came to accumulate their final record.  Did they underachieve because their schedule was tougher than it looked?  The Giants and Cowboys stood out here.  Did they overachieve because their schedule was weaker than it looked?  The Cardinals and the Jets stood out in that regard.

Once last year’s numbers are compiled and filed, it’s time to do the same thing for the upcoming campaign – creating more accurate numbers than you can commonly Read more

NBA says no to sportsbook jersey sponsorship

05.05.2016     09:31 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We admit, our dream to watch Blake Griffin hustle down the court with a 5Dimes logo on his jersey was a longshot. The NBA has committed to jersey sponsorship starting in 2017-18 but sportsbooks, alcohol, tobacco, politics, and pretty much any apparel not named Nike won't be allowed. That leaves the obvious: McDonald's, Gatorade, and tech, car, and insurance companies.

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: How to Handicap NFL Season Over/Under Wins Part I

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Over the past decade, the NFL betting marketplace has evolved into a year round process. The very first Super Bowl odds for 2017 came out before the Broncos beat the Panthers in the Super Bowl this past February.  CG Technology posted lines for every NFL game through the first 16 weeks of the season prior to the draft.  Week 1 regular season lines are widely available right now.  And the NFL Season Win Total marketplace, while still a long way from maturity, has seen a handful of key shops, like the Westgate Superbook, post virgin numbers in recent days.

My process for handicapping the upcoming NFL season begins immediately after the draft.  This is the time of year to focus on those aforementioned season win totals.  My NFL prep work begins each spring with a thorough look back at last year’s results.

Why look back, you ask?  The answer, of course, is simple – because that’s where I find my very first edges when approaching the upcoming season.  If my base power rating heading into the offseason wasn’t wholly accurate, it results in inaccurate adjustments moving forward.  Part 1 of my process begins Read more

Gambling News: Australia bans live betting

04.29.2016     06:38 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Australian Government just placed a ban on live in-game sports betting via the internet which reportedly accounts for around 15% of its market.

“I think it’s a win for the lazy, traditional monopoly wagering operators in Australia who are more interested in protecting their monopoly than giving consumers what they want. It is a sad day for Australian consumers and I think the big winners today are the illegal offshore operators who will be able to continue to operate uninhibited.”

"I think it's been a very competitive market and in competitive markets boundaries can be stretched," Mr Attenborough told Fairfax Media. "I think its good to see the government actually providing clarity on where those boundaries will be set going forward. And what's important in competitive markets is you need to have clear boundaries so all players can operate within those boundaries."

NBA Gambling: Markets make big adjustment following injuries to Paul and Griffin

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
When you lose Chris Paul and Blake Griffin, it's pretty clear the pointspread needs to be adjusted. The question is how much. According to the betting markets, both players are worth about 11.5 points. The Clippers were -8.5 home favorites with Paul and Griffin in Games 1 and 2. As of this morning, they are +3 home dogs for tonight's Game 5. According to Sports Options, 81% of public money is on the Trail Blazers.
