College Football Betting Trends: PAC-12 road teams continue to crush

10.09.2015     06:54 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
It's been The Year of the Road Team in the PAC-12 thus far as visitors have recorded a sick 9-2 SU and 10-1 ATS in conference play including Washington's outright win as +17 underdogs at USC last night. All four of Saturday's PAC-12 road teams are catching over a touchdown; three of which +10 or more. Interestingly - and in no way correlated - over the last five years the PAC-12 has by far the lowest homecourt winning percentage (60.2%) of any college basketball power conference according to Ken Pomeroy.

Week 3
Stanford (+9.5) 41 at USC 31

Week 4
Stanford (-14) 42 at Oregon State 24
California (+1) 30 at Washington 24
UCLA (+1) 56 at Arizona 30
Utah (+10) 62 at Oregon 20
USC (-4) 42 at Arizona State

Week 5
Washington State (+16.5) 28 at California 34
Oregon (-6.5) 41 at Colorado 24
Arizona State (+12.5) 38 at UCLA 23
Arizona 17 at Stanford (-12.5) 55

Week 6
Washington (+17) 17 at USC 12
Oregon State at Arizona

DFS sites place ban on employee participation

10.06.2015     08:33 AM     Printer Friendly

Scramble mode for DFS site FanDuel and DraftKings after word got out various employees were using their ability to access accounts to better position themselves for various contests. As actual sports bettors, it's both comical and concerning to sit back and watch these sites pedal themselves as not only legit but "skill based." It's all bullshit, but on the same token, you want them to succeed to a certain degree with the hope it will eventually lead to nationwide legalized sports betting. Not looking good, is it?

“We’ve heard from users that they would appreciate more clarity about the rules for this issue. In the interim, while the industry works to develop and release a more detailed policy, DraftKings and FanDuel have decided to prohibit employees from participating in online fantasy sports contests for money.”

College Football Betting Preview: Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets at Clemson Tigers

Georgia Tech at Clemson
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - ESPN2
CRIS Opener:
Clemson -8.5 O/U 56.5
CRIS Current: Clemson -6.5 O/U 54.5
Recommendation: Georgia Tech

Georgia Tech's season is heading in the wrong direction after three straight losses including last week's meltdown against North Carolina. There are concerns for the Yellow Jackets on both sides of the football. With a shaky offensive line and limited playmakers, Tech produced a pedestrian 4.6 yards per play against Notre Dame, Duke, and North Carolina. And on the flip side, the defense allowed 6.4 ypp during that span. Perhaps the most glaring stat, one that Tech has thrived at under Paul Johnson, is third down conversions. The offense is built to be put in 3rd and short situations where it can pick up easy first downs and thus control the clock. Last season, the Yellow Jackets converted on 58% of their third downs which was the best mark in the country by over 5%. This season they are at 35% and an even worse 28% against the aforementioned three teams. That speaks volumes about Tech's lack of offensive weaponry.

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: The NFL's square/sharp divide

10.05.2015     07:50 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers blog entry.
On Twitter every Sunday, there’s always significant discussion of what the NFL sharp/square divide games are for that day.  There’s an old quote from legendary Vegas oddsmaker Jimmy Vaccaro that goes like this: “Squares bet teams, sharps bet numbers.”  And there’s plenty of truth to that quote.  For example, at the weekly Tuesday Group football discussion for pro bettors here in Vegas, nobody says “I like team X this weekend.”  They say, “I like Team X at +3 or higher.”  Recreational players, on the other hand, have a general tendency to focus on teams, not pointspreads.

That gives pros a leg up when it comes to catching half point wins instead of half point losses in games that finish with a final margin right around the pointspread or total.  Last Thursday’s Ravens-Steelers game is a classic example of that.  Line shoppers, by definition, at least somewhat sharp, won laying -2.5 with Baltimore and pushed taking +3 with Pittsburgh, able to avoid a losing ticket regardless of which side they bet.  The vast majority of non-line shoppers took a push with either Read more

Player data leaked at DraftKings

10.05.2015     07:18 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
DraftKings reportedly had issues regarding leaked player data calling into question the regulation of the DFS industry.

With too many employees presumably having access to this inside information, it raises the specter of insiders using this non-public information to gain an edge when they play similar contests for big money on other sites.

At a minimum, DFS employees and insiders should be restricted from playing on any site (not just their own), and access to this type of information should be limited only to the most essential of personnel. If it’s too easily accessible to most employees, the risk and suspicion of insider profiteering will not go away anytime soon.

College Football Betting Preview: Notre Dame Fighting Irish at Clemson Tigers

Notre Dame at Clemson
Saturday, 5 pm PT - ABC
CRIS Opener:
Clemson -1.5 O/U 53
CRIS Current: Clemson pk O/U 54
Recommendation: Clemson

It’s possible that bad weather could take center stage and be the dominant factor in many games along the East Coast this weekend. Current projections call for four consecutive days of rain and varying wind conditions from site to site. Here in Clemson, South Carolina the expected weather concern is rain only but with four straight days of wet weather on Memorial Stadium’s grass surface, you have to handicap how that helps or hinders the fundamentals. Situationally this is a nice spot for Clemson which had two full weeks to prepare for the Fighting Irish but Notre Dame is far more battle tested with their opponent’ average power rating being over 9.5 points stronger than Clemson’s. This game could have major College Football Playoff implications especially for Clemson since this is one of what looks to be two remaining games versus top 15-type teams. With situational angles signaling an advantage to the home team Tigers, let’s look at the Read more

College Football Gambling: Bettors react to news of Hurricane Joaquin

10.01.2015     07:09 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
You'll notice that with conference games starting and Hurricane Joaquin knocking on the door of the East Coast, 17 games are totaled in 40's this weekend. According to reports heavy rain and wind is expected from South Carolina to Maine. The Boston College-Duke game for example was bet down from 41 to 36.5. Rain is obviously in the forecast but winds approaching 20 mph is likely the main reason for the line move.

NFL players can participate in DFS but can't win more than chump change

09.29.2015     08:35 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Colleges have already come out as saying that athletes aren't allowed to participate in daily fantasy sports. The NFL isn't as strict, though there's a caveat. According to the league office, $250 is the max you can win.

“[F]antasy football games and League or Club-sponsored skills competitions (e.g., racquetball tournaments, ‘Club Olympics’ events) for prizes generally are not considered to be gambling or a gambling-related activity, provided that there is no wagering on the outcome,” the league’s policies for players state. “NFL Personnel may not, however, accept prizes with a value in excess of Two Hundred Fifty Dollars ($250) in any fantasy football game. This prohibition is intended to avoid any appearance of impropriety which may result from participation in fantasy football games by individuals perceived to have an unfair advantage due to their preferential access to information.”

ESPN continues to push envelope with betting talk

09.23.2015     09:40 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
While ESPN decided to ditch its footballl "cover alerts" --- which to its credit was a fantastic idea --- there are no plans to back off of the pregame gambling talk.

“We did it once. I didn’t like it, and we stopped it,” John Wildhack, ESPN’s executive vice president of programming and production, told the SBJ scribes. “To me, it was too overt. Part of everything we do has a little bit of trial and error.”

“We certainly try to be mindful of the culture around us,” Sankey said, “but that doesn’t mean that we accept it as entirely appropriate. There is an existing concern about gambling becoming more central to the sport (and the broadcast). Although there has not been any official discussion as a conference about this issue, we need to be attentive to the integrity of the game.”

College Football Betting Preview: Maryland Terrapins at West Virginia Mountaineers

Submitted by Andrew Lange blog entry.
Maryland at West Virginia
Saturday, Noon PT - FS-1
CRIS Opener:
West Virginia -16 O/U 59
CRIS Current: West Virginia -16.5 O/U 60
Recommendation: West Virginia

Following two easy wins and a bye week, West Virginia takes a small step up in class as it plays host to rival Maryland. Following Week 2's embarrassing 48-27 loss to Bowling Green, the Terps bounced back with a 35-17 win over South Florida.

Heading into last week's game, Maryland made a switch at quarterback as Caleb Rowe stepped in for Perry Hills. Rowe seemed to make a positive impact as the passing game produced nearly 300 yards and four touchdowns. It was far from a perfect showing however as Rowe tossed three interceptions (16-15 TD-INT career ratio), the team fumbled three times but managed to regain possession in each instance, the ground game produced a dismal 114 yards on 3.4 ypc, and UM committed 12 penalties for 120 yards. Maryland will need a much cleaner performance if it is going to compete in Morgantown.

Not much of a body of work for West Virginia though Week 1's blowout win over Georgia Southern Read more
