NFL Preseason Handicapping: Hoyer and Manziel vie for starting job vs. Washington

Cleveland at Washington -2.5 O/U 41.5

The Cleveland Browns are close to making a decision on a starting quarterback -- Brian Hoyer or Johnny Manziel. Both players will get reps with the first team tonight. Ideally first-year head coach Mike Pettine wants to see both players face Washinton first-string but reports indicate that the Redskins' starters will only play the first quarter.

“But his plan is his plan,” Pettine said of Gruden, according to a transcript prepared by the Browns. “It’s his football team, and if we have to make some adjustments to get the matchups we want, then we will.”

NFL Preseason Handicapping: Baltimore starters to play a quarter vs. Dallas

08.15.2014     07:32 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Baltimore at Dallas pk O/U 41.5

Baltimore head coach John Harbaugh said his starters will play about a quarter during Saturday's preseason tilt at Dallas.

“We’ll have some play counts for a few guys, including [quarterback] Joe [Flacco] and some of the defensive players, but we’ll see how it goes,” Harbaugh said “Basically, [the starters will play] about a quarter.”

"That’s going to be [dictated by] the way the game goes, how many plays we get on offense,” Harbaugh said. “Tyrod needs work—not that Keith doesn’t also, but Tyrod has had lots of practice time here. He hasn’t had as much game time.. Tyrod’s a very good quarterback, but the chance to play it out in games is Read more

NFL Preseason Betting Consensus: Market and public differ on Jacksonville-Chicago opinion

08.14.2014     01:10 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Here are the consensus bets for tonight's NFL Preseason game between the Chicago Bears and Jacksonville Jaguars according to Bookmaker. What we see is common among single-event games -- the line move differs from the betting public's preference. Chicago opened -4 but have since dropped to as low as -3-105. Meanwhile, over 63% of bets at Bookmaker have been made on the Bears. Essentially what happened is sharp bettors like taking preseason underdogs of +3.5 or more whereas the public sees a home team at -3 and happily fires away. We've seen a similar though not as dramatic move with the total. It opened 41 and was bet up to 42.5 yet 53% of bets have been placed on the under.

College Football Handicapping: The impact returning experience has on the betting markets

08.13.2014     07:35 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Expanding on yesterday’s Sportsmemo Podcast discussion on the impact Phil Steele continues to have on the early season college football betting markets. We took the top 10 most and least experienced teams according to Steele’s Combined Experience Chart and looked at their Week 1 lines moves based on CRIS’s opening and current numbers. Not surprisingly a majority of the “experienced” teams with boarded Week 1 games were bet whereas the “least experienced” teams were bet against.

Top 10 Most Experienced Teams - Week 1
UTSA: +12.5 to +11 at Houston
UL-Lafayette: Non-boarded vs. Southern
Indiana: Non-boarded vs. Indiana State
Central Michigan: Non-boarded vs. UT-Chattanooga
Mississippi State: -29 to -31 vs. Southern Miss
Auburn: -21.5 vs. Arkansas (-21 or -20.5 at other offshore shops)
Houston: -12.5 to -11 vs. UTSA
Idaho: +34.5 to +35.5 at Florida
Maryland: Non-boarded vs. James Madison
Army: Bye Week

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Wake Forest first-year head coach Dave Clawson announced that true freshman John Wolford will be the team's Week 1 starting quarterback. The Demon Deacons are currently 2.5-point road favorites vs. UL-Monroe.

“John Wolford is going to be our starting quarterback,’’ Clawson said. “We made that decision (Monday) after watching the tape of (Sunday’s) scrimmage.

“Not just last night in the scrimmage, but consistently through camp he has executed the offense at the highest level. And I think he gives us our best opportunity to win football games.’’

MLB Handicapper Free Play: Cincinnati Reds at Cleveland Indians

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Cincinnati (Cueto) +105 at Cleveland (Tomlin) O/U 7
Recommendation: Cincinnati

It’s not hard to make a case for betting against Josh Tomlin, even when he’s facing light hitting Cincinnati.  Tomlin was 3-2 with a 3.12 ERA in early June, but then the bottom dropped out, allowing four runs or more in seven of eight starts before getting sent back down to AAA.

His lone appearance in Columbus was mediocre, but now he’s back in the Indians rotation because they simply don’t have many attractive options.  Still working his way back from Tommy John surgery, Tomlin has been lit up in each of his last four starts here at Progressive Field; 0-3 with a7.77 ERA.  I’m not expecting a shutdown performance here, to put it mildly.

The Reds are 5-0 in Johnny Cueto’s five career starts against the Indians, and Cueto has a 2.10 ERA in those contests – a strong track record against this lineup.  Cueto is in stellar current Read more
