College Basketball Betting: Virginia a rare home underdog to North Carolina

02.27.2017     09:35 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
It's been a long time since Virginia was a home underdog like it is tonight against North Carolina. The Cavaliers were last catching points on their home court back in 2012 when the Tar Heels were laying -3.5 and won 54-51. But it looks as if the betting markets are starting to sour on this squad after losing four of five including a 65-41 blowout loss at UNC back on Feb. 18. The normally efficient Cavs have really struggled to score of late; 0.92 points per possession over their last five games. UNC opened -1.5 but has since been bet up to -3.5.

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Texas A&M Aggies at Arkansas Razorbacks

Texas A&M at Arkansas -3.5 O/U 144.5
Recommendation: Over

In the first meeting between Arkansas and Texas A&M in College Station, the Aggies were able to control tempo (64 possessions) but still lost 62-60. The venue switches to Bud Walton Arena where the Razorbacks tend to control pace and score at a higher clip. A&M coach Billy Kennedy on tonight's game: "We’re going to need to score,” he said. "You get opportunities to score in transition against them. We need to make good decisions and put the ball in the hole. You’ve got to take good shots against them. If the game is in the 80s or 90s we’re in trouble.” They'll have their chances tonight as Arkansas ranks last in the SEC in strength of schedule according to Ken Pom and yet still own the league’s third-worst defensive efficiency. A&M hasn't been shy about putting up points on some of the SEC's "all offense, no defense" teams. Against LSU, the Aggies hung 92 and 85. Against Ole Miss they hit for 80. And last time out against Auburn, they notched 81. Also note that the first meeting had 102 points with just under 10 minutes to Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Northwestern Wildcats at Illinois Fighting Illini

Northwestern -1.5 at Illinois O/U 135
Recommendation: Northwestern

Second meeting of this in-state battle between Northwestern and Illinois. In the previous contest, two weeks ago in Evanston, the Illini walked out with a 68-61 victory so expect the NU group to be revenge-minded tonight. The Wildcats were minus star guard Scottie Lindsey in the initial matchup but he returned to the starting lineup Saturday and played 24 minutes. With Lindsay back, not only does Northwestern have the leading scorer (15.0 ppg) on the floor tonight but his presence also boosts their defense significantly. Lindsay combined with Vic Law gives NU arguably the best set of wing defenders in the Big Ten which should make life a bit tougher on the Fighting Illini’s perimeter shooting this time around.

Northwestern kept Illinois interior threat Maverick Morgan pretty quiet in the initial meeting holding him to 5-of-12 shooting and only two free throw attempts but the Illini nailed 42% (8-of-21) from three-point land. Have to believe Lindsay’s presence will help quiet the Illinois guards and wing players who accounted for 56 points last Read more

Chuck Barkley lost big on the Atlanta Falcons

02.15.2017     09:42 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Charles Barkley, our favorite loveable sports betting loser, reportedly lost $100K betting on the Atlanta Falcons.

“Charles is down there and we’re having fun,” White recalled, according to Brad Rowland of UPROXX. “He’s like ‘I just bet $100K on the Falcons.’ I was like, ‘Don’t worry, just get your chips ready. Everything’s gonna be great.’”

College Basketball Handicapping: Indiana's Crean calls out players

02.15.2017     09:36 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
It's a fine line between constructive criticism and throwing your team under the bus. Indiana's Tom Crean appears to have accomplished a little of both following Sunday's home loss to Michigan. The Hoosiers have been hurt by injuries but it doesn't excuse the offense from failing to top 65 points in five of its last six games. IU heads to Minnesota tonight. They are currently +5 underdogs.

“I’ve never coach a team with this lack of maturity when it comes to being able to respond and rebound from when things aren’t going well for them personally. That includes the teams that have won six or eight games.” – Tom Crean, Indiana head coach

“Immaturity in the backcourt. We don’t play both ends of the floor with the same purpose that we have to play [with] when shots are not going down. That has to change” – Tom Crean, Indiana head coach

College Basketball Gambling: NC State situation somehow turning even more toxic

02.15.2017     09:09 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Currently residing on the front page of is an article titled, "Sources: Mark Gottfried likely out at NC State, barring late surge." Awkward timing considering the Wolf Pack have a game tonight against rival North Carolina. Gottfried's days are without a doubt numbered as his team enters tonight of a five-game losing streak (0-5 ATS). And it's never a good thing when an unnamed coach within your league calls your team out for not playing hard. Despite having a sure-fire first round draft pick in Dennis Smith, NC State has suffered conference losses of 18, 51 (!!!), 25, 24, and 30.

"They have more than enough talent to get to the NCAA tourney," one ACC coach told ESPN. "They just don't play hard at all."

College Basketball Handicapping: If you've been betting on SEC road teams, you're probably rich

02.14.2017     08:53 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
By this point in the season, you are probably aware that the SEC isn't very good. Kentucky, Florida and South Carolina are all solid and sure-fire tournament teams but beyond that, it's pretty messy. And by messy, we mean a lot of mediocre basketball. One interesting stat in the SEC this year is how bad home courts have been. Last season, the SEC ranked second out of 32 leagues with a home straight up winning percentage of 69.8%. This season has been the complete opposite. Heading into tonight's games, home teams have won 43 of 84 games which is barely over 50%. Compared to the rest of the power conference world -- ACC (68.1%), PAC-12 (61.5%), Big XII (61.3%), Big East (59.4%), Big Ten (58.6%) -- that's horrific. And let's not forget the automatic win when Missouri rolls into town. But where it really starts to get noteworthy is the spread records of those road teams. How about 51-32-1 ATS or 61.4%!

SEC SU/ATS Road Record
South Carolina (5-1 SU, 3-2-1 ATS)
Florida (4-1 SU, 4-1 ATS)
Alabama (4-2 SU, 4-2 ATS)
Kentucky (4-2 SU, 2-4 ATS)
Arkansas (4-2 SU, 4-2 ATS)
Vanderbilt (4-3 SU, 5-2 ATS)
Tennessee (3-3 SU, Read more

College Basketball Gambling: Gonzaga sports best spread record in the country

02.09.2017     09:35 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Out of curiosity, we scanned through college basketball's current against the spread records. Guess who has the best mark in the nation? How about the Gonzaga Bulldogs. And what's impressive about the Zags' 16-4-1 ATS tally is that they aren't exactly under the radar. Gonzaga currently ranks No. 1 according to the AP, USA Today, Sagarin, and Ken Pom. For tonight, they are -17 road chalk tonight against Loyola Marymount and have a big showdown at St. Mary's on Saturday. That game projects to be close to a pick 'em.

MLB appears down with sports betting

02.09.2017     09:18 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
MLB commissioner Rob Manfred has seemingly joined NBA commissioner Adam Silver in the crusade to accept, legalize and regulate sports betting.

“There is this buzz out there in terms of people feeling that there may be an opportunity here for additional legalized sports betting,” Manfred told Yahoo! Finance on Wednesday. “We are reexamining our stance on gambling. It’s a conversation that’s ongoing with the owners.”

College Basketball Gambling Alert: Louisville suspends two players

02.06.2017     09:28 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Louisville will be without center Mangok Mathiang and forward Deng Adel for tonight's game at Virginia. The duo was suspended for missing curfew. Mathiang had come on of late having averaged 12.8 ppg over his last five games. During that same span, Adel netted 13.8 ppg. The Cardinals were already down starting point guard Quentin Snider (hand). Louisville's offense had a field day with three of the weaker defenses in the ACC (93.6 ppg vs. Pitt, NC State and Boston College) over the last two weeks. Now it must go on the road, shorthanded, against a UVA defense that has allowed 50.4 ppg the last five meetings. The Cavs opened -4 but have since been bet up to -6.5.
