College Football Betting Preview: Central Michigan Chippewas at Syracuse Orange

Central Michigan at Syracuse
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT
CRIS Opener: Syracuse -10.5 O/U 65
CRIS Current: Syracuse -10 O/U 68
Recommendation: Under

Opposite results for these teams last week as Central Michigan recorded a solid 45-27 road win over Kansas while Syracuse was outfoxed by ex-DC Scott Shafer in their 30-23 home loss to Middle Tennessee State. The ‘Cuse allowed six sacks and averaged a minuscule 3.3 yards per play on their 93 total plays. They also had their second lowest number of passing yards (182) in a game under Dino Babers. Expect those subpar numbers by Orange standards to get back to normal this week against a defense without the built in personnel & weaknesses knowledge that Shafer had. Defensively they held their own last week for nearly three quarters but a span of 11:52 between late third quarter and mid fourth saw them allow three consecutive touchdown drives. Limiting the potent MTSU offense to 369 total yards for the game looks solid but their second half faltering turned a 7-point lead into a 7-point loss.

College Football Betting: After two ugly losses, reeling Baylor makes switch at quarterback

09.13.2017     08:29 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
With losses to Liberty, UTSA, and the Waco High School JV squad to open the season, Baylor will make a switch at quarterback with transfer Anu Solomon being replace by last year's part-time starter, Zach Smith. Smith threw for 375 yards and three touchdowns in Baylor's bowl win over Boise State the team's only win in its last nine tries. How about some +14 at Duke this weekend, bettors?

"We're going to turn to [Smith] and let him do his thing," Rhule said, making the announcement on the Big 12 coaches teleconference.

"These kids have been through a tough stretch ... They've won one of the last nine games," Rhule said. "They're looking for something good to happen."

College Football Betting News: East Carolina fires defensive coordinator

09.12.2017     08:07 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Last season, East Carolina opened with a 52-7 win over Western Carolina, followed that up with a 33-30 win over NC State, and then lost by only five at South Carolina. Since then, the Pirates have won only once (vs. UConn), with 10 losses coming by 23.5 ppg. Sensing he may be out of a job soon if things don't turn around, Scottie Montgomery did what any head coach would do in this situation: fire a coordinator. Defensive coordinator Kenwick Thompson was let go after last week's 56-10 loss to West Virginia. And starting quarterback Thomas Sirk is questionable with concussion symptoms. Surprisingly, there's been a little support for ECU in the markets this week with Virginia Tech bet down from -22 to -20.5 road chalk.

“I know probably much will be made about East Carolina’s start,” Hokies coach Justin Fuente said Monday. “I can tell you they played two really, really quality opponents. I know there are not a lot of people in America running to their ADs

Monday Night Football Gambling: Public shows betting support for both road underdogs

09.11.2017     11:37 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Quick look at where the public money is going for tonight's two Monday Night Football games.

New Orleans at Minnesota
The Vikings opened -3.5 back in April with the line bouncing between -3.5 and -3. Most offshore and Las Vegas sportsbooks are currently showing -3 with -115 or -120 juice on the home favorite. Now real movement on the total with the original opener of 47.5 still the prevailing number. According to Sports Options, 57% of the public money has come on New Orleans while 53% is on the over.

LA Chargers at Denver
Here's a game that has seen significant line movement since the opener. Denver originally opened -5 at CRIS and -3.5 at Pinnacle. CRIS and 5Dimes have moved to -2.5 with juice while most shops are -3 even money. The total has seen heavy pressure of the under with 43 taken out earlier today and 42.5/42 now showing. Public money is showing 60% on the Chargers and split 50/50 on the total.

College Football Betting Preview: Pittsburgh Panthers at Penn State Nittany Lions

Pittsburgh at Penn State
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - ABC
CRIS Opener: Penn State -17 O/U 67
CRIS Current: Penn State -21.5 O/U 64
Recommendation: Under

Last season, Pittsburgh was involved in exactly one "under" against FBS competition; a 31-24 bowl loss to Northwestern that had plenty of chances late to cash an "over" late. There were a number of reasons behind such a strong trend. For starters, the Panthers scored big both literally and figuratively with the hiring of offensive coordinator Matt Canada who is one of the brightest minds in the game. He took a below average offensive (82nd, 377.5 ypg) and helped produced one of the bigger spikes in production in the country (38th, 446.8 ypg). Pitt averaged more yards per play (6.71) than Alabama, Oregon, and Florida State and was one of only 11 teams to net more than 40 ppg. But that scoring output didn't necessarily equate to whom Pitt really was. Based on Pitt's total yardage, the offense "should" have averaged closer to 30 ppg but if you remember anything about the 2016 season you're well aware that craziness was the Read more

NFL Gambling: Kansas City vs. New England, Offshore vs. Las Vegas

09.07.2017     12:40 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
So there's a NFL regular season game going on tonight with Kansas City taking on New England in Foxboro. Somewhat divided opinions with offshore sportsbooks leaning towards the Chiefs and Las Vegas sportsbooks all but saying we don't want any more action on the Patriots. According to Sports Options, 51% of the betting public is on the favorite and 51% is on the over; two relatively low marks considering the matchup.

Offshore Market
Pinnacle: New England -8-02
Matchbook: New England -8ev
Greek: New England -8-05

Las Vegas Market
Golden Nugget: New England -9.5
Jerry's: New England -9.5
Wynn, Stations, Coasts: New England -9
Westgate: New England -8.5

College Football Betting Preview: Marshall Thundering Herd at NC State Wolfpack

Marshall at NC State
Saturday, 3 pm PT - ESPN3
CRIS Opener: NC State -20 O/U 54
CRIS Current: NC State -24.5 O/U 55
Recommendation: Under

Complete opposite results for these teams in Week 1 as NC State clearly won the box score and lost to South South Carolina while Marshall lost the box score but managed to beat Miami-Ohio. The Thundering Herd’s 31-26 win was propelled by 99- and 97-yard kickoff return touchdowns plus a 72-yard pick six. Aside from that, Marshall mustered 10 offensive points and 267 total yards. The most troubling aspect is the fact that their rushing attack was non-existent with only 67 true rushing yards on 24 carries (2.8 ypc). Defensively they had issues as well allowing Gus Ragland to throw for 298 yards and gain 429 overall. Those numbers are 67 and 62 yards above Miami’s averages last season and they are 56 and 79 more than Marshall allowed in 2016. The offseason chatter about a much improved defense did not happen last Saturday against a decent but not overwhelming MAC offense.

NC State meanwhile was victimized by a game Read more

NFL Handicapper Betting Preview: New York Jets at Buffalo Bills

NY Jets at Buffalo
Sunday, 10 am PT - CBS
CRIS Opener: Buffalo -6 O/U 43
CRIS Current: Buffalo -7.5 O/U 40
Recommendation: New York

The very first question I ask myself when I’m looking at an NFL pointspread is this: Does the favorite deserve to be favored in this price range? And my answer to that question when it comes to the Buffalo Bills in Week 1 is a resounding "no way!"

For this pointspread to be categorized as reasonable, two things must be true. First, the Jets legitimately must be one of the very worst teams in NFL history. And secondly, the Bills have to be capable of beating an opponent by more than a touchdown. I’m not convinced that either is the case.

Make no mistake about it – the Jets are currently being priced like the worst team in NFL history. Last year’s 1-15 Browns were power rated by the markets higher than this year’s Jets squad. The 0-16 Lions from 2008 – the only winless team in the modern era – were -3.5 point road favorites at Atlanta on opening day. I’ve lived in Vegas Read more

College Football Betting Preview: California Golden Bears at North Carolina Tar Heels

Calfornia at North Carolina
Saturday, 9:20 am PT - ACC Network
CRIS Opener: North Carolina -12.5 O/U 66
CRIS Current: North Carolina -13 O/U 55
Recommendation: Under

The overhaul at California is enormous. The Golden Bears have a new Head Coach in Justin Wilcox who is defensive minded which is the polar opposite of his predecessor Sonny Dykes. There is a new offensive system which is an up-tempo “spread” but very different from the “Bear Raid” employed here the past four seasons. Ex-Eastern Washington OC Beau Baldwin’s scheme is far more multiple and unlike the prior offense run here, it comes with a complex playbook. On the other side of the ball, Cal has scrapped the 4-3 in favor of defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter’s 3-4 alignment. The switch brings position changes, new assignments and the possibility that the talent on hand doesn’t completely fit the way it will down the road after a couple of more recruiting classes. While on paper 2017 does not look to be a great defensive season for California, it likely can’t be Read more

College Football Gambling Alert: Kent State heads to Clemson without head coach

08.28.2017     09:28 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Quick note: Kent State head coach Paul Haynes will not coach Week 1's opener at Clemson due to a "medical leave of absence." Offensive coordinator and former Miami-Ohio head coach Don Treadwell will step in. Following the announcement, Clemson was bet up from -39.5 to -40.5. Kent State opened last year's with a 33-13 pointspread covering loss at Penn State. The Golden Flashes, however, lost at Alabama, 48-0, in Week 4.
