NBA Gambling: Markets make big adjustment following injuries to Paul and Griffin

04.27.2016     07:56 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
When you lose Chris Paul and Blake Griffin, it's pretty clear the pointspread needs to be adjusted. The question is how much. According to the betting markets, both players are worth about 11.5 points. The Clippers were -8.5 home favorites with Paul and Griffin in Games 1 and 2. As of this morning, they are +3 home dogs for tonight's Game 5. According to Sports Options, 81% of public money is on the Trail Blazers.

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: The Secret Truth About the NFL

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Everybody is talking about quarterbacks, with the NFL draft upcoming, starting on Thursday.  In recent weeks, both the St Louis Rams and the Philadelphia Eagles paid a steep price to move up to #1 and #2. The expectations are that California's Jared Goff and North Dakota State's Carson Wentz will go with the top two picks, although their draft order is still up in the air.

If things go well with those two picks, the Rams and Eagles will be set up for the long term with above average quarterbacks.  If things go poorly with those two picks, the Rams and Eagles will be steady, consistent losers until the next time they draft a QB in the first round.  In fact, that’s exactly where the Rams have just been since they picked Sam Bradford #1 overall back in 2010.

The advanced metric pundits are all screaming bad deal for the two teams that traded up, and great deal for the two teams that traded down (Tennessee and Cleveland).  And the history of QB’s going #1 and #2 in the draft hasn’t seen two above average quarterbacks in those spots since 1971.

Here’s the list:

NBA Gambling Alert: Golden State's Curry doubtful for Game 3

04.21.2016     07:49 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It doesn't look like Golden State's Steph Curry will play in tonight's Game 3 at Houston. Curry missed Game 2 but the Warriors still won 115-106. Golden State is 3-1 SU, 2-2 ATS and 3-1 O/U without Curry this season. The Warriors are currently -5 road favorites with a total of 214.5 for tonight.

"It's why I didn't play Game 2," he said. "I tried my best to simulate moves I would probably have to do in the game, and I couldn't do it. If that happens tomorrow at full speed, then I'll adjust accordingly."

NBA Gambling News: Golden State Warriors on 3-7 against the spread skid

04.06.2016     07:51 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
According to Draymond Green, the Golden State Warriors have had about enough of this regular season stuff. Last night, the Warriors lost at home in overtime to woeful Minnesota. They've now failed to cover in seven of their last 10 games. Golden State will need to "win out" in order to reach 73. They play host to San Antonio on Thursday. There have been rumbling both teams may rest various players.

"It's human nature to where, all right, kind of ready for the regular season to end," Green said. "Talking 82 games, we get bored with that after awhile. And that's no excuse, just, I'm always give it to y'all real, and that's about as real as I can be. It's kind of at a point now where you're ready for the regular season to be over."

Green continued, "Now, saying that, we got to be a better enough ballclub to continue to try to get better with these games and try and go into the playoffs the right way and not stumble in the playoffs, so, think that's something we have to focus on. We

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Understanding the MLB Betting Markets Part II

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
In Part I of this article last week, I illustrated how the quants have come to dominate the MLB betting marketplace over the course of the last few seasons, completely changing the value equation moving forward.  Advanced metric starting pitching stats have become the primary basis for all baseball moneylines, leaving a market that devalues every other aspect of the game.  That leaves opportunities for alternative strategies to succeed here in 2016 and beyond.

I used several examples last week to demonstrate my point about the modern markets.  The following example is probably the best of the bunch, using the strikeouts per nine innings advanced metric stat (K/9).

In 2005, the top eight pitchers in strikeouts per nine innings were Mark Prior, Jake Peavy, Johan Santana, Brett Myers, Pedro Martinez, John Lackey, AJ Burnett and Jason Schmidt.  Six of the eight starters produced a profit for their supporters, and if you bet on the leaders in the K/9 stat for the Read more

UPDATE

Last year Phil Mickelson's name was associated with an illegal sports betting operation. For now, Mickelson is in the clear though the case remains ongoing.

According to the original court documents, Silveira accepted a wire transfer of $2.75 million, which he knew was part of "illegal sports betting." The money, according to the documents, came from a "gambling client" and had been transferred into Silveira's Wells Fargo Bank account.

Baltimore Orioles
2015 W-L:
81-81
2015 O/U: 73-80-9
2015 Profits:  -3.5 units
2016 O/U Wins (Westgate):  78.5
2016 AL East Odds (Westgate):  8/1
Projected Starting Rotation:  Chris Tillman, Ubaldo Jimenez, Miguel Gonzalez, Kevin Gausman, Yovani Gallardo
Key Departures:  Gerardo Parra, Wei-Yin Chen,  Junior Lake,
Key Additions:  Mark Trumbo, Odrisamer Despaigne, Pedro Alvarez

Handicapper's Take: "With the addition of Mark Trumbo and Pedro Alvarez, there's a lot of talk that the Baltimore Orioles are going to be a powerhouse offense this season. It's a reasonable theory considering last year's squad hit the third-most home runs in baseball (217) and had the fourth highest SLG percentage (.421). The Orioles will no doubt homer their way to plenty of wins but it's only one facet of a team loaded with shortcomings.

For starters, this team is going to strikeout a ton. Even prior to the team Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: NCAA Tournament Hard Numbers, Not Hype

03.21.2016     12:22 PM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The insanity that was the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament is in the rear view mirror, and the hard numbers show a very different story than the mainstream media is reporting.  Just once, I wish I could turn on Sportscenter and find out what was going on against the spread.  But ESPN doesn’t do that, obviously, nor does CBS, TNT, TBS, TrueTV or any of the other major networks, whether they’re involved with televising the Big Dance or not.  That, of course, leaves a void for me to fill.

Carnage!  Madness! Brackets in flames, in shreds!  That was the message from the networks over the weekend.  Bettors, however, saw a very different story.  Betting favorites, in fact, had a winning weekend against the spread over the first four full days of the tournament.

I threw out all the games where there was no true favorite; games with a pointspread of -1.5 or less.  Many of those games — like Notre Dame vs Stephen F Austin on Sunday; a disastrous result for many books — had a switch of favorites at some point between the opening and closing lines.  Notre Dame +1.5 and Stephen F Austin +1.5 were both Read more

NCAA Tournament Gambling Free Pick: Iona Gaels vs. Iowa State Cyclones

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Iona vs. Iowa State -9 O/U 166.5
Recommendation: Over

We’ve got two teams that love to run, pushing the pace at every opportunity – this is the highest total (by a fairly wide margin) of the first round for a reason!  And it’s the type of game where the loser can be expected to get into the 80’s, if not higher! Both squads rank among the Top 35 in the country when it comes to tempo; with each team averaging less than 16 seconds per possession.  And when two teams like this get together, it’s a track meet, Throw in the early start time and the mile high altitude and we can expect defense to be optional for extended stretches of this ball game.

The Gaels have scored 78+ in nine of their last ten games; lighting up the scoreboard even against opponents who were trying to slow them down.  When they faced another uptempo opponent – Fairfield, for example – the Gaels scored 91 and lost.  In their first matchup with Monmouth, the Gaels scored 102 in regulation and lost.  In fact, in ten Iona games with a total of 158 or higher, they went 8-2 to the Over; playing even faster than the Read more
