Jimmy Fallon talks with Floyd Mayweather about $1 million bet on Oregon Ducks

05.08.2013     02:19 PM     Printer Friendly
Floyd Mayweather was on Jimmy Fallon last night. One of the topics of discussion was Floyd's love of sports betting including one of his big bets he made during this past college football season (Oregon won 43-21). Would have been a lot funnier had it been a losing ticket.

FBI was betting on college football during sting operation

05.08.2013     07:46 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
This is crazy. The FBI was betting on college football – with federal funds – during an undercover operation that saw 34 arrested and accused of illegal sports betting. Note that some of the games involved Oklahoma. Does Bobby Stoops know about this?

“Legendz Sports solicited millions of illegal bets totaling over … one billion dollars on sports and sporting events from gamblers in the United States, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year,” grand jurors alleged in the indictment.

He reported winning $952 when he bet in October 2008 that OU would not beat Kansas by three touchdowns or more. OU won by only two touchdowns — 45-31. He lost $1,000, though, betting on the Texas-Missouri football game the same day.

The next week, he reported losing $735 betting against OU in the OU-Kansas State game. He reported losing another $1,050 on Read more

NCAA Tournament Handicapping: Stat Profiles for the Sweet Sixteen

Here are the numbers we’ve been following through the Dance in tip-off order by locale. Note that I’ve updated the pace rankings from Kenpom’s website…those are the numbers as of Tuesday evening. All the other numbers you see are CONFERENCE ONLY per game averages because I wanted to take out the crazy extremes of non-conference schedules, particularly since those games were played so long ago anyway. The “conference advantage” numbers from Jeff Sagarin’s computer ratings were also tabulated Tuesday night.

Some reference points.

The typical college defense allowed about 47.5% on two-pointers this year. Numbers less than that represent better than average inside defense. The typical offense made 6.0 treys per game. Interestingly, NONE of the 16 teams left averaged between 6.0 and 6.9 in their league games. We have quite a few trey-heavy teams at 7.0 makes or more. I’m surprised by how many teams were in the low 5’s or less. Always Read more

College Basketball Betting Recap: Indiana wins Big Ten, Middle Tennessee shocked again

Let’s run the numbers from the three most talked about results of the day…

Indiana 72, Michigan 71

2-Point Percentage: Indiana 43%, Michigan 40%

3-Point Shooting: Indiana 7/16, Michigan 10/22

Free Throws: Indiana 5/9, Michigan 7/13

1’s and 2’s: Indiana 51, Michigan 41

Rebounds: Indiana 47, Michigan 26

Turnovers: Indiana 14, Michigan 6

(Indiana 2-2 in Kenpom, Sagarin; Michigan 11-9)

Indiana got the best of it in most of the numbers…so karma rewarded their performance with some good fortune at the end. Michigan just missed a layup and a tip-in in the final seconds that would have won the game. But…

*Michigan had to shoot 45% on treys just to be in the game, which is not something that should be counted on.

*Michigan missed the front end of two late one-and-one’s when they could have been sealing a trey-based victory

*Michigan was killed on the Read more

College Basketball Betting: Minnesota brings in shrink to help solves woes

02.26.2013     07:26 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Indiana -6 at Minnesota O/U 139.5

Boy, times have changed. Back in the day, if you lost four of five you simply practiced harder and maybe coach rolled out the puke buckets for a practice or two to really get your attention. Minnesota apparently isn’t worried about the physical part of the game – like trying to figure out how to crack 60 points. Instead, the Gophers see their struggles as more of a mental thing. So much so that they brought in a shrink – sorry, sports psychologist. Whatever works, Tubby.

“Generally, I help people understand how their thoughts and emotions impact performance,” said Aberman, who works with the Minnesota Twins and Gophers football, baseball and men’s tennis. “We know that physical skills and talent are important, Read more

Guess what mainstream actor claims he was a beard for a sports betting syndicate

02.15.2013     07:28 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
And for your Friday enjoyment we present to you Ashton Kutcher discussing his short-lived role as a beard for a sports betting syndicate.

"I actually used to be a front for the largest national sports-betting syndicate in America."

"We were clearing, like, $750,000 in four weeks of college football. It was pretty fun. Then they caught on. The hypothesis had been that the house would just assume that I was a dumb actor with a lot of money who liked football."

"So, generally these types of individuals aren't allowed to gamble, but they know how to handicap the house. So they sent me in. I basically just placed the bet."

Will legalized sports betting dip into the NFL's profits?

02.14.2013     11:18 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Editorial from northjersey.com on the NFL's anti-sports betting stance. It is argued that fantasy football may have something to do with it.

According to the Nevada Gaming Commission, in 2011, $3.2 billion was wagered in sports bets in the state’s casinos, and of that amount, $1.34 billion, or nearly 42 percent, was bet on college and pro football. On this year’s Super Bowl, $98.9 million was wagered in Nevada alone.

The National Gaming Impact Commission estimates that $380 billion is wagered a year on football through offshore accounts and illegal betting. People are betting on football whether the NFL likes it or not.

A perfect match: Gambling and the Super Bowl

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Publicly, the NFL is among one of the staunchest opponents of legalized gambling. Former commissioner Paul Tagliabue and current commissioner Roger Goodell were instrumental in getting the anti gaming ‘Illegal Internet Gambling Prohibition Act’ attached to the Port Security Bill. The NFL has taken this stance despite the fact that its enormous popularity is, in no small part, due to the prevalence of betting on games.

The hypocrisy of the NFL in regards to betting is almost laughable. The facts, as you will see, clearly show that the league was founded by gamblers for gamblers. From the NFL’s first television appearance in 1939 through the current TV deal that pumps more than three billion dollars per year into the league coffers, the NFL’s popularity rests upon the shoulders of those who wager on the outcome of the games.

Here in the 21st century, the NFL is the most popular and profitable sport in the. NFL owners are among the richest men in the world; franchises are bought and sold for more than half a billion dollars. However, the league’s humble origins were anything but the extravagant bonanza that is the NFL today. Read more
