NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Minnesota Wild at St. Louis Blues

Minnesota at St. Louis -135 O/U 5.5
Recommendation: St. Louis

The St. Louis Blues recently got Jaden Schwartz who is arguably their most important forward back in the lineup after being out for an extended period of time due to injury. He is a great two-way player for this squad and since his return, the Blues have gone 4-1 in their last 5 games with the only defeat during that span coming on the road against the red hot, surging Boston Bruins. Schwartz being back on the ice means the Blues now have their three top scorers with him, Vladimir Tarasenko and Brayden Schenn all in the lineup at the same time which is something that has been a rarity for the Blues this season. In addition to their top offensive weapons being healthy, St. Louis has played terrific at the defensive end of the ice limiting the opposition to a single goal or less in four of those last five games and they will pose a big challenge for Minnesota tonight who have only been able to muster a paltry average of 2.54 goals per game on the road this season which helps explain their difficulties of putting wins together on the highway. Carter Hutton’s emergence Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Calgary Flames at Minnesota Wild

Calgary at Minnesota -115 O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Minnesota

The Calgary Flames have been mired with consistency problems all season and I expect those to continue tonight as they head to Minneapolis to face the Minnesota Wild. Calgary is coming off a nice 3-2 home win against the Anaheim Ducks; their third straight win overall, all of which coming at home. But now they head on the road where they have dropped two straight to San Jose and Anaheim. This should be a strong step up effort spot for Minnesota after they were hammered in a 7-2 road loss to the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday night. The Wild emphasized playing better defensively and their overall game without the puck in practice heading into this game so I’d expect them to put forth a much improved defensive effort tonight on home ice where the Wild have won four straight games including a pair of wins against really good Western Conference teams like Dallas and Nashville. Minnesota recently got Nino Neiderreiter back from injury and he’s already made a big impact for the Wild scoring three goals in two games since his return. Calgary goaltender Mike Smith is Read more

Music City Bowl Betting Preview: Kentucky Wildcats vs. Northwestern Wildcats

Music City Bowl - Nashville, Tenn.
Kentucky vs. Northwestern
Friday, December 29, 1:30 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener: Northwestern -7 O/U 51
CRIS Current: Northwestern -7.5 O/U 51
Recommendation: Kentucky

There is little to nothing to like about Kentucky's body of work this season. Schedule-wise, the Wildcats played in the watered down SEC East, drew both Mississippi schools from the SEC West, and were unimpressive in non-conference wins over Southern Miss, Eastern Michigan, and Eastern Kentucky. They were outgained (6.26 ypp to 5.56 ypp) and outscored by nearly a field goal per game this season. And to close the year, totally outclassed by Georgia and Louisville by a combined score of 86-20.

Meanwhile, Northwestern rallied from a 2-3 start and finished the regular season on a seven-game winning streak. None of the seven victories were "monumental" and it should be noted three came via overtime. The Wildcats were also no doubt the benefactors of a +9 turnover margin during that span. And unlike Kentucky, they closed the year strong by Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Nevada Wolf Pack at Northwestern Wildcats

Nevada at Northwestern
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT
CRIS Opener: Northwestern -23 O/U 52.5
CRIS Current: Northwestern -24 O/U 60.5
Recommendation: Northwestern

Nevada has been in steady decline since the departure of of longtime head coach Chris Ault. Brian Polian managed to take the Wolf Pack to two bowl games but make no mistake, he wasn't going to take the program to Ault-like levels. And it'll be a tall task for first-year head coach Jay Norvell as well. Norvell inherits a squad that was far worse than its 5-7/3-5 record a season ago. Playing in the far weaker MWC West Division, the Wolf Pack were outgained by 1.4 ypp in league play. As for this year's squad, there are 43 new players that must digest completely new systems on both sides of the ball. One such "system" will be the famed/doomed "Air Raid" offense. Offensive coordinator Matt Mumme, son of Hal, says he wants to run 85-90 plays per game. That's a dangerous recipe for a squad that still doesn't have a clear cut starter at quarterback, lost it's top running back, and projects to have one of the weakest defenses Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: New York Yankees at Minnesota Twins

New York (Mitchell) at Minnesota (Mejia) -102 O/U 10
Recommendation: Minnesota

Good situational spot here for the Twins as they get New York off of a grueling four game set at Boston which ended with a doubleheader yesterday. Reliever Bryan Mitchell is forced into the rotation tonight so the Yankees can keep their starters on normal rest. It’s uncertain how long Mitchell can go in this one since he’s only thrown 7.1 innings this season in his 12 relief appearances. Minnesota has a huge opportunity here if they can get to Mitchell and chase him early because the Yankees bullpen is extremely thin tonight. With their top three arms heavily used over the weekend, have to figure closer Aroldis Chapman (has thrown three straight days), setup man Dellin Betances (threw two of last three days) and Tyler Clippard (thrown back-to-back days) are all either unavailable or only if necessary. Either way, their effectiveness should be less than 100%. Add to that Adam Warren (pitched 2 of last 3 days) and Chase Shreve and Chad Green (have each pitched back-to-back days) and you can see the difficulties Joe Girardi faces with his pitching Read more

NHL Handicapper Stanley Cup Playoffs Free Betting Pick: St. Louis Blues vs. Minnesota Wild

St. Louis Blues vs. Minnesota Wild
Series Recommendation: St. Louis +130

The Minnesota Wild battle the St. Louis Blues in the opening round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs starting Wednesday. These two clubs hooked up back in 2014 with the Wild taking the series in six games under head coach Mike Yeo who is now the bench boss for the Blues.

St. Louis knew they would have to make some changes after losing in the Western Conference finals last May. They brought in Yeo to be the associate coach-in-waiting as longtime leader Ken Hitchcock was planning to call it a career after this season. When the Blues lost 7 of 11 games heading into the All-Star break and suffered a bad loss in their first contest back, management went ahead and fired Hitchcock and promoted Yeo on February 1. This move paid off quickly as St. Louis won 22 of its final 32 games to reach 99 points and clinch a sixth consecutive playoff berth. Yeo's mantra has always been defense and that was a weakness for the Blues prior to his promotion. Since Yeo took over, St. Louis has improved in all areas of backchecking and goaltending with a league-best 1.87 GAA, .936 save Read more

Minnesota at Nashville -125 O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Nashville

Two Central Division foes face-off for a Saturday matinee as the Nashville Predators host the Minnesota Wild in a potential first round playoff preview. The Wild had a five-point lead in the Central Division back on February 28 before losing 12 of their last 16 games. It dropped them down to second place as they now trail Chicago by (7-8-9) points entering this contest. A facial injury to winger Zach Parise will sideline him for this game. Parise has scored 17 goals and 20 assists on the year and is one of the main leaders for this Minnesota club. Nashville is looking to get out of the Wild Card range and grab the third spot in the Central which would pit them in a match-up against the Wild. The Preds have won seven of their last 10 games and have earned at least a point in six of the last 10 meetings versus Minnesota. Nashville has played division opponents tough this year, with a 12-7 record as a favorite vs. Central foes. Forward Filip Forsberg leads the club with 30 goals; his third consecutive season with 25 or more goals with the Predators. This game is big for Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Winnipeg Jets at Los Angeles Kings

Winnipeg +150 at Los Angeles O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Winnipeg

My clients and I cashed a winning ticket betting against the Los Angeles Kings on Monday night in their 2-0 shutout road loss to the Edmonton Oilers. I see another opportunity for another wager against the struggling Kings tonight as they return home to face the Winnipeg Jets. Los Angeles is 1-4 in its last five games games with the only victory coming against woeful Buffalo. The Kings have been an offensively challenged team all season but their struggles to score goals have reached new lows in recent games as they’ve been held to two goals or less in five straight games and just six goals total during that span. And the Kings’ strong home record has taken a hit recently with just two wins in their last five tries. After two awful showings in Alberta against Calgary and Edmonton (outscored 7-2) earlier this week, the Kings are eight points behind the final wild card spot in the West with only 10 games left to play. Winnipeg has been on a little uptick of late with three straight wins over the NY Islanders, Minnesota and Philadelphia. Winnipeg continues to play Read more

College Basketball Gambling: Who Has What It Takes to Win the Big Dance Part I

History shows us many things about what it takes to be a champion.  I write this article every year, and in every year except for two, I have been able to identify the eventual NCAA National Champion among my elite level teams. Both exceptions were the same team – UConn – making miracle runs to win the title as prohibitive longshots.

Three years ago, Kevin Ollie’s Huskies were on the ropes in their tourney opener against St Joe’s, needing a late rally just to send the game to overtime.  Three weeks later, they cut down the nets as national champs at Jerry’s World in Arlington.  I didn’t see it coming.  Neither did the betting markets, with UConn priced in the 100:1 longshot range prior to the tournament.  And if a longshot like that wins every coinflip game in the tourney this year, I’m not likely to get it right either.

Here is a list of the last 19 NCAA champions and the teams they beat in the title game: Kentucky over Utah in ’98, UConn over Duke in ’99, Michigan St over Florida in 2000, Duke over Arizona in ’01, Maryland over Indiana in ’02, Syracuse over Kansas in Read more

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
St. Louis -110 at Detroit O/U 5.5
Recommendation: St. Louis

Two former Central Division rivals clash in the Motor City tonight as the Detroit Red Wings host the St. Louis Blues. Detroit has fallen on hard times as of late, dropping nine of its last 11 contests. They currently sit dead last in the Eastern Conference with 54 points and could be skating without two of their best forwards as veteran Thomas Vanek is out indefinitely with a lower body injury and Gustav Nyquist could miss a few games after a high-sticking incident in Sunday's 6-3 loss at Minnesota. The 27-year-old winger hit Wild defenseman Jared Spurgeon in the face, drawing blood with the blade of his stick and served a 4-minute double minor. Nyquist will have an in-person hearing in New York soon, which suggests he could miss as many as six games. As for Vanek, the club's leading goal-scorer with 14 and second in points with 36, this further handcuffs a Detroit offense that has scored three goals or fewer in 10 of its last 11 games. The Blues have started to get back on the right track under new coach Mike Yeo with wins in five of their last six. Wingers Patrik Berglund and Vladimir Read more
