NHL Handicapper Stanley Cup Playoffs Free Betting Pick: St. Louis Blues vs. Minnesota Wild

St. Louis Blues vs. Minnesota Wild
Series Recommendation: St. Louis +130

The Minnesota Wild battle the St. Louis Blues in the opening round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs starting Wednesday. These two clubs hooked up back in 2014 with the Wild taking the series in six games under head coach Mike Yeo who is now the bench boss for the Blues.

St. Louis knew they would have to make some changes after losing in the Western Conference finals last May. They brought in Yeo to be the associate coach-in-waiting as longtime leader Ken Hitchcock was planning to call it a career after this season. When the Blues lost 7 of 11 games heading into the All-Star break and suffered a bad loss in their first contest back, management went ahead and fired Hitchcock and promoted Yeo on February 1. This move paid off quickly as St. Louis won 22 of its final 32 games to reach 99 points and clinch a sixth consecutive playoff berth. Yeo's mantra has always been defense and that was a weakness for the Blues prior to his promotion. Since Yeo took over, St. Louis has improved in all areas of backchecking and goaltending with a league-best 1.87 GAA, .936 save Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Minnesota Wild at Nashville Predators

Minnesota at Nashville -125 O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Nashville

Two Central Division foes face-off for a Saturday matinee as the Nashville Predators host the Minnesota Wild in a potential first round playoff preview. The Wild had a five-point lead in the Central Division back on February 28 before losing 12 of their last 16 games. It dropped them down to second place as they now trail Chicago by (7-8-9) points entering this contest. A facial injury to winger Zach Parise will sideline him for this game. Parise has scored 17 goals and 20 assists on the year and is one of the main leaders for this Minnesota club. Nashville is looking to get out of the Wild Card range and grab the third spot in the Central which would pit them in a match-up against the Wild. The Preds have won seven of their last 10 games and have earned at least a point in six of the last 10 meetings versus Minnesota. Nashville has played division opponents tough this year, with a 12-7 record as a favorite vs. Central foes. Forward Filip Forsberg leads the club with 30 goals; his third consecutive season with 25 or more goals with the Predators. This game is big for Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Winnipeg Jets at Los Angeles Kings

Winnipeg +150 at Los Angeles O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Winnipeg

My clients and I cashed a winning ticket betting against the Los Angeles Kings on Monday night in their 2-0 shutout road loss to the Edmonton Oilers. I see another opportunity for another wager against the struggling Kings tonight as they return home to face the Winnipeg Jets. Los Angeles is 1-4 in its last five games games with the only victory coming against woeful Buffalo. The Kings have been an offensively challenged team all season but their struggles to score goals have reached new lows in recent games as they’ve been held to two goals or less in five straight games and just six goals total during that span. And the Kings’ strong home record has taken a hit recently with just two wins in their last five tries. After two awful showings in Alberta against Calgary and Edmonton (outscored 7-2) earlier this week, the Kings are eight points behind the final wild card spot in the West with only 10 games left to play. Winnipeg has been on a little uptick of late with three straight wins over the NY Islanders, Minnesota and Philadelphia. Winnipeg continues to play Read more

History shows us many things about what it takes to be a champion.  I write this article every year, and in every year except for two, I have been able to identify the eventual NCAA National Champion among my elite level teams. Both exceptions were the same team – UConn – making miracle runs to win the title as prohibitive longshots.

Three years ago, Kevin Ollie’s Huskies were on the ropes in their tourney opener against St Joe’s, needing a late rally just to send the game to overtime.  Three weeks later, they cut down the nets as national champs at Jerry’s World in Arlington.  I didn’t see it coming.  Neither did the betting markets, with UConn priced in the 100:1 longshot range prior to the tournament.  And if a longshot like that wins every coinflip game in the tourney this year, I’m not likely to get it right either.

Here is a list of the last 19 NCAA champions and the teams they beat in the title game: Kentucky over Utah in ’98, UConn over Duke in ’99, Michigan St over Florida in 2000, Duke over Arizona in ’01, Maryland over Indiana in ’02, Syracuse over Kansas in Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: St. Louis Blues at Detroit Red Wings

St. Louis -110 at Detroit O/U 5.5
Recommendation: St. Louis

Two former Central Division rivals clash in the Motor City tonight as the Detroit Red Wings host the St. Louis Blues. Detroit has fallen on hard times as of late, dropping nine of its last 11 contests. They currently sit dead last in the Eastern Conference with 54 points and could be skating without two of their best forwards as veteran Thomas Vanek is out indefinitely with a lower body injury and Gustav Nyquist could miss a few games after a high-sticking incident in Sunday's 6-3 loss at Minnesota. The 27-year-old winger hit Wild defenseman Jared Spurgeon in the face, drawing blood with the blade of his stick and served a 4-minute double minor. Nyquist will have an in-person hearing in New York soon, which suggests he could miss as many as six games. As for Vanek, the club's leading goal-scorer with 14 and second in points with 36, this further handcuffs a Detroit offense that has scored three goals or fewer in 10 of its last 11 games. The Blues have started to get back on the right track under new coach Mike Yeo with wins in five of their last six. Wingers Patrik Berglund and Vladimir Read more

NHL Handicapping: Recent rule change results in more games going over the total

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Earlier this month, the NHL introduced a mandatory equipment change for goalies. They now must wear streamlined pants which are tighter, rounder, and more form-fitting. It supposed to be more comfortable for goalies but also opens up the possibility for more goals. The league's overall totals record this season is currently 362-361 O/U. But since the equipment change was implemented last Saturday, games have gone 32-25-6 O/U which comes out to 56% "overs." It’s not a jaw dropping number by any stretch but it does point to the NHL’s attempt to give fans more offense. More changes are reportedly on the horizon and expected to be introduced prior to the start of the 2017-18 campaign. The recent trend towards the “over” is something worth monitoring in the weeks to come as goalies around the league continue to adjust.

Let's also discuss a trio of teams that have been strong to "over" in recent weeks. The Minnesota Wild have been on one of the longest running totals streaks I’ve seen during my near decade run of betting the NHL. Since December 13, the Wild have gone a remarkable 21-4-3 O/U. This is a talented offensive group Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Minnesota Wild at Toronto Maple Leafs

Minnesota at Toronto -115 O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Toronto

The Minnesota Wild wrap up a five-game road trip tonight as they head into Toronto to hook up with the Maple Leafs. Both clubs have been trending downward as of late with the Leafs losing their last two game as part of a quick three-game road swing. Expanding even further, Toronto has now dropped five of their last its last contests overall. The Wild have lost four of their last five road games with the lone victory coming in a 2-1 overtime decision at Edmonton. Minnesota's inconsistent special teams has once again been on display during this trip with their penalty-killing unit yielding four goals while being held scoreless on the man-advantage. This after they netted six power play goals over their previous four games. While Toronto has lost five consecutive meetings in the series, including a tight 3-2 loss in St. Paul back on October 20, the Leafs have been stout at home with wins in eight of their 11 contests at the Air Canada Centre this season. In addition, Toronto has cashed in six of their last eight games as a favorite while Minnesota is just 2-5 as an underdog. Price is right to Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Pittsburgh Penguins at Minnesota Wild

Pittsburgh -120 at Minnesota O/U 5
Recommendation: Pittsburgh

My clients and I cashed a winning ticket on the Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday as they snapped a two-game losing streak in decisive fashion with a dominant 6-1 blowout over the New York Rangers. I think the Pens are worth backing once again today as they travel to Minnesota to take on the Wild in late afternoon action here on Black Friday. Pittsburgh had struggled offensively scoring two goals or less in three of its last four games prior to the outburst against the Rangers. Sidney Crosby score twice and Phil Kessel score as well to end what had been a recent offensive funk. When the big guns start finding the back of the net for the Penguins, they are a tough team to beat and I expect them to have an added bit of focus and intensity for this game. Note that Minnesota defeated the Penguins 4-2 just a couple weeks ago in Pittsburgh. Minnesota has been horrific offensively as they’ve scored a combined 12 goals in their last seven games. They are relying almost exclusively right now on their defense, penalty kill and goaltender Devan Dubnyk to win them games but shutting down the Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Colorado Avalanche at Nashville Predators

Colorado at Nashville O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Nashville -1.5 +140

Two Central Division foes will clash for the last time tonight as the Nashville Predators host the Colorado Avalanche. Nashville has already punched its ticket to the Stanley Cup Playoffs despite their current four-game losing streak, which continued over the weekend when the Preds blew a 2-0 lead and lost in a 3-2 shootout to San Jose on Saturday night. Colorado is fighting to stay alive to grab the last Wild Card spot in the Western Conference as they trail Minnesota by five points with only three contests remaining. They have lost five of their last six games and head coach Patrick Roy lit into his club after their 5-1 loss to St. Louis on Sunday. He called out forward Matt Duchene for celebrating his 30th goal of the season when they were down 4-0. The celebration wasn't anything over the top but for Roy to make that a focal point shows that this team is clearly frustrated. As for the Preds, they need to build some positive momentum heading into what will be a tough postseason as they will be in the Pacific Division quadrant for at least the first two rounds. The Preds are 5-4 this Read more

Nashville at Chicago O/U 5
Recommendation: Chicago -1.5 +210

The Chicago Blackhawks will battle their division rivals the Nashville Predators tonight at the United Center. The Blackhawks should be refocused and ready to take out some anger after Sunday's embarrassing 6-1 loss to Minnesota in the Stadium Series game held outside at TCF Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. Despite losing three of their last four games at the "Madhouse on Madison", Chicago sports a stellar 22-7-2 overall home record. They also hold a 6-3-1 record against Central Division opponents including a pair of wins against Nashville this season. The Predators come into this contest winners of four of their last six games and 3-0-1 in their last four road games. Nashville currently holds the top Wild Card spot in the Western Conference with 69 points with fellow division foe Colorado trailing by only three points. These two teams always play each other tough, and while the Hawks have turned in some lackluster efforts since the All-Star Break, this club knows that they’ll have to bring their A-game versus a division rival. Chicago has covered the puck-line in six of their Read more
