College Basketball Betting Free Play: Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks at Stanford Cardinal

Stephen F. Austin +8.5 at Stanford O/U 126.5
Recommendation: Stephen F. Austin

I'm a little surprised Stanford decided to give head coach Johnny Dawkins another year but as a bettor I won't complain because under Dawkins this team has been a consistent underachiever. As for the NIT, I have my concerns about the Cardinal and their motivation considering they won the event last season. And they get a first round opponent that they simply can't just show up and beat. Stephen F. Austin is a quality mid-major with wins at Tulsa, Oklahoma and Long Beach State. The Lumberjacks also lost at Texas A&M by eight points. They play at a slow place and thrive on the defensive end of the floor (42.1% eFG, 29.0% 3-point, 88.2 ppp allowed). SFA's stout three-point defense is particularly noteworthy considering Stanford shot 41.1% in PAC-12 play which accounted for 32% of its points. Look for the underdog to stick around in this one.

PAC-12 Tournament Betting Preview

PAC-12 Tournament Preview

The PAC-12 received only one at-large bid from the tournament selection committee last year.  That was at least partially the result of the numerous upsets in the PAC-12 tournament, where No. 6 seed Colorado beat No. 4 seed Arizona 53-51 in the Final. This year, UCLA, Oregon and Arizona are “locks” to make the Big Dance, and both Cal and Colorado are in good shape to get a bid as well.  As a result, the PAC-12’s first tournament here at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas isn’t as crucial for many of the top seeds as it was last year.

The PAC-12 lacks elite teams, but they don’t have any true bottom feeders in the conference either.  Arizona spent most of the season as the highest ranked PAC-12 team in the polls, but the Wildcats slumped down the stretch, losing four of their last eight games, including three out of four away from home.  UCLA enters the postseason near the bottom of the top 25.  Oregon spent a good portion of the season ranked, but the Ducks’ 5-6 SU mark down the stretch has left them in the “others receiving votes” category as Read more

Oregon at Stanford -2 O/U 139
Recommendation: Over

Last time out, without starting point guard Dominic Artis, Oregon scored 81 points in an up-tempo, 76 possession game against Washington. I don't think we'll see those types of numbers tonight but it's clear that from a tempo standpoint, even without Artis, the Ducks are going to continue to run.

"We need to keep running," Altman said. "That suits us and helps us with our depth. If we're going to play nine or 10 guys, we've got to make sure we're pressing the other team."

Stanford has been up and down all season but we've seen the Cardinal push tempo with a willing partner. Games against USC, UCLA and Colorado featured an average of 70 possessions. The problem for Stanford has been an inconsistent offense. I expect them to pressure Read more

College Basketball Betting: Injury concerns for Utah Utes

Stanford -3 at Utah

Plenty of injury concerns for the Utah Utes as they play host to Stanford tonight. Senior guard Jarred DuBois (12.0) didn't start in Thursday's loss to Cal and played only nine minutes in the second half. He's expected to start and play more minutes tonight. Freshman forward Jordan Loveridge (12.7 ppg) has been battling the flu and may not be able to play due to concussion-like symptoms suffered against Cal. Stanford opened -2 and was bet up to -3. The Cardinal are 1-4 SU on the highway with their lone win by two points. Also note that Utah's crowd support may be lacking due to Read more

CRIS Current: Stanford -6 O/U 47
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Stanford -3.5

Wisconsin’s season might seem never ending to some.  They’ve gone through three starting quarterbacks, fired their offensive line coach after a couple of games, lost three games in overtime, and somehow played in the Big Ten title game, blowing out Nebraska 70-31.  Oh yeah, head coach Brett Bielema left for Arkansas shortly after their Big Ten title win, and now program granddaddy, Barry Alvarez, is back to coach the ‘Granddaddy of Them All’, the Rose Bowl.  Of course, Alvarez is the one with all the Rose Bowl wins for the Badgers in 1994, 1999 and 2000.  This will be the Badgers’ third straight trip to the Rose Bowl, while Bielema Read more

Belk Bowl Gambling Preview: Cincinnati Bearcats vs. Duke Blue Devils

Cincinnati vs. Duke
CRIS Opener:

CRIS Current: Cincinnati -9 O/U 60.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Cincinnati -9.5

The way Duke ended the regular season presents an interesting situation for tonight's Belt Bowl matchup against Cincinnati. Two months ago, the Blue Devils got to six wins and clinched their first postseason berth since 1961. And not only that but they did so against in-state rival North Carolina who at the time was trending upwards after wins over Virginia Tech and Miami (FL). Duke's resume leading up to that victory wasn't eye-popping. A vast majority of BCS conference schools would have notched wins over Florida International, Memphis, NC Central, Wake Forest, and Virginia. And when asked to step up in class, the Blue Devils were blown out at Stanford and blew 20-0 lead against Read more

Stanford at NC State -7.5 O/U 142
Recommendation: NC State

I think Stanford is in for a difficult time tonight at NC State. The Cardinal will be playing their first road game of the season clear across the country against a quality foe eager for a marquee win. I typically don't make much of revenge angles but it is important to note that last year NC State traveled to Palo Alto had a comfortable lead and then allowed Stanford to close the game on a 17-1 run – much of that run occurred without CJ Leslie who was sitting due to cramps.  Offensively, Stanford has really struggled to shoot the basketball despite not having played a true road game. In losses to Belmont, Minnesota and Missouri, the Cardinal shot only 42% from the floor and an even more alarming 14-of-64, 21.8% from three. Stanford also wasn't a great road team last year. Their six PAC-12 losses were by margins of 11, 13, 13, 10, 11 and 1 (at Utah). But while a lot lines up for NC State, Read more

College Football Betting Alert: Rain in the forecast for PAC-12 Championship

UCLA at Stanford -8.5 O/U 45

Tonight's PAC-12 Championship between UCLA and Stanford is expected to be a wet one. It's raining as we speak and will continue to do so throughout the day. Note that the wind is currently at 20 mph but is expected to die down considerably by kickoff. Also note that Stanford Stadium has natural grass and while the field is currently covered, conditions could get messy in the second half.

College Football Betting: UCLA-Stanford total down to 43.5

UCLA at Stanford -8 O/U 43.5

The total of Friday's PAC-12 Championship between UCLA and Stanford continues to get bet down with most offshore sportsbooks showing 43.5 after CRIS opened the game 51.5. Last week's matchup just crept over the total of 51 as Stanford won 35-17. In both wins over UCLA and Oregon, Stanford held a 37-23 time of possession advantage. Line history courtesy of CRIS.

Friday, 5 pm PT - FOX
CRIS Opener:

Rob Veno's Power Rating: Stanford -7.5

Rarely do you see two teams in college football play the same team in the same year let alone in back-to-back games. But that is the situation for Friday’s PAC-12 Championship between UCLA and Stanford.

Stanford has won 19 of its past 20 home games; the only loss was against Oregon last season. They have won 10 games in three straight seasons and are currently on a six-game winning streak. UCLA lost to Oregon State and also at California before winning five straight which is the school's longest winning streak in seven years. They managed to dethrone USC 38-28 two weeks ago in a game that likely meant much more to the program than the last week's Stanford game. Either way it was not a good spot for the Bruins.
