AFC Betting News and Notes: Contenders vs. Pretenders

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
As the NFL postseason approaches, Teddy Covers turns his focus towards the playoff contenders from each conference. This week, Teddy breaks down the top teams from the AFC into Contenders vs. Pretenders.

New England Patriots: Contender
Teams that win the turnover battle every week are very tough teams to beat. The Patriots haven’t just been winning the turnover battle every week – they’ve been completely destroying other teams in that department. New England’s +7 turnover ratio against Buffalo last Sunday was nothing new or different. Tom Brady hasn’t thrown an interception since Week 6, with a remarkable 24-0 TD-INT ratio in his last ten ballgames. Last year, Green Bay led the NFL by a wide margin with a +24 turnover margin for the entire 2009 season. Since Week 10 of the current campaign, the Patriots are a remarkable +22 in turnovers, a seven week stretch of true excellence protecting the ball while creating havoc for opposing offenses. Yes, the Patriots defense Read more

Welcome to Teddy Covers' unique look at the NFL. Teddy watches the games typing furiously on his laptop while giving you the key info that the box scores and game recaps simply don’t have. This week: NFC tidbits from Week 15.

Cardinals – John Skelton is processing information quickly, not sitting in the pocket taking hits and wondering where he should throw the football. And he knows that he's got as good a safety net as there is at the wide receiver position in this league, repeatedly looking for Larry Fitzgerald even in traffic. But when you start off the game punt, punt, punt, interception and punt, falling behind by two scores while getting only two first downs in five drives in the process, it's no easy task for any rookie QB to rally the team back, let alone a rookie QB from a DII school making his first road start. And when Fitzgerald has more receptions than the entire rest of the team combined, it shows a young QB zoning in on a single target, not reading the field. Read more

Buccaneers – This offense is really starting to pick up steam, much better at grinding out first downs now than they were a month or two ago. With seven rookies in the starting lineup, three skill position weapons really stand out as strong offensive contributors: RB Blount and WR's Williams and Benn. But the most impressive thing about this road win was the showing from their defense. Gashed by the run in virtually every game (allowing a hundred yard rusher in six of their last seven contests), this D dominated the line of scrimmage here, giving up very little on the ground. San Fran had been creating big plays out of their play action passing game; the Bucs eliminated big plays from the Niners’ repertoire.
