Everything you need to know about online poker in Nevada

11.19.2012     12:15 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Good article from the Las Vegas Sun about the details of Nevada's push for online poker.

Without federal action, Internet poker likely will be approved and regulated on a state-by-state basis, like the lottery. Poker operators likely will face different rules and taxes by state. There will be no federal oversight, and Nevada regulators may not play the important regulatory role Reid envisioned.

UNLV students learn ins and outs of gaming industry

11.12.2012     08:22 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Everyone knows that 90% of the classes you took in college were pointless. But UNLV is offering classes that are not only cool but ones that better prepare students for a career in the gaming industry. Good read courtesy of the Las Vegas Sun.

"We're not teaching students how to gamble," insists UNLV gaming professor Gary Waters, who teaches introductory classes in the gaming lab. "We're teaching students how to manage casinos. This is really important for the gaming industry."

"Our primary objective is so students can relate academic information to actual table games and slots, and get some operational experience," Waters said. "The more they get involved, playing it and dealing it, the better they perform in their internships and the more successful they are in their careers."

"The landscape has changed in the last few years," Waters said. "There are more college-educated executives leading these casinos. Education is more highly recognized in Read more

Dude who stole $1.6 million in chips from Las Vegas casino still at-large

10.26.2012     12:30 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
These Las Vegas chip stealing stories never get old. Meet Akingide Cole, a California man who made off with $1.6 million in chips from the Venetian. It wasn't exactly a smash-and-grab job. He walked into a closed area of the casino, grabbed the chips, and left. Authorities are still searching for Mr. Cole who was described as having "a large fibrous growth on his left earlobe." At least they know not to look for anyone with an attractive looking girlfriend.

If you live in Las Vegas and are currently looking for a job, South Point is looking to fill positions for its real-money online poker website. According to South Point, it is already prepared to go "live" but the launch date has been pushed back to later this year. Positions include marketing, customer service, compliance and IT. Salaries range from $25K to six figures.

"We feel we could launch today," Vaughan said. "But you’ve got to go through the independent testing labs, you have to satisfy the State Gaming Control Board and because we are the first, we’re going to be under the microscope. Las Vegas' D Casino (formerly Fitzgeralds) is getting in on the Seahawks-Packers publicity. They are refunding all Green Bay side and moneyline bets. William Hill operates the D's sportsbook but the refund is only valid (by Sunday) at the D.

“I’m so disgusted that we are going to refund every bet made on the Packers at the D,” Stevens said. “I know exactly how it would feel if I was laying the number and I saw what happened.”

William Hill wants to provide Vegas bettors with endless amount of options

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Article from the Las Vegas Sun on William Hill's preparation for the football season.

“They could have 20 or 30 bets during a quarter of a football or soccer game,” Vaccaro said. “We don’t approach that, but our goal is to someday maximize what they do over there here in Nevada. Can we get to 2,300 bets a day? I don’t know, but we’re working on it.”

“We knew there really wasn’t anything else out there with a point-spread in college,” Shapiro explained. “It’s the only contest of its kind in the market.”

Las Vegas sportsbooks eager for football season

09.05.2012     08:07 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Las Vegas sportsbooks gear up for the start of the NFL regular season. LVH sportsbook director Jay Kornegay says football accounts for 40-45% of the casino's total handle.

"Even during those slow times, it was so popular and part of the American culture to bet football - especially here in Nevada - that there is always money set aside for their favorite hobby," he said.

"Everybody in this town benefits from the football season, meaning the taxicab drivers, the restaurants, the bartenders, the waitresses. You name it, all the properties in Vegas benefit entirely," he said.
