Las Vegas sportsbook takes three massive bets on Mayweather

04.30.2015     08:22 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
According to Westgate Sportsbook oddsmaker Jay Kornegay, there have been three six-figure bets placed on Floyd Mayweather.

"America has to bet this fight," veteran sports book director Jay Kornegay of the Westgate Las Vegas Superbook said. "Everyone coming to this town, they're going to wager on this fight. And we think 70% of the action will come in from Thursday on."

"Most people would rather bet $20 and win $40, than bet $20 and win $10," Kornegay said. "We see it at the window: 'Yeah, I'll bet Mayweather,' then they see it's $21.50 to win $10, and they're like, 'Oh, what about Pacquiao?' "

Will online gambling impact Las Vegas?

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
MGM CEO Jim Murren doesn't think that legalized online gambling will have a negative impact on his company's bottom line.

“I think people are going to go to Las Vegas for March Madness, they are going to go to Las Vegas for the Super Bowl. They are going to go, even if there is sports betting in New Jersey and other states,” Murren said, drawn by hotel, entertainment and dining attractions.

Big weekend for Las Vegas with Mayweather-Pacquiao and Kentucky Derby

04.28.2015     08:00 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Las Vegas oddsmakers feel that Saturday's Mayweather-Pacquiao fight will provide a boost to their handle on the Kentucky Derby.

''We've got a hook nobody talks about," he told the Newark Star Ledger this weekend in reference to how his book at the South Point seeks to offset the potential of ‘smart money’ failing to roll in on the fight. "The Kentucky Derby. They will be sitting in the sports book at 6:30, half of them freakin' drunk and they are going to be running around in a festive mood, and they are going to bet the Derby just to have something to do until the fight. I would bet we might just set a Derby record."

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: NBA Eastern Conference Playoffs update

04.27.2015     08:26 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We’re midway through the opening round of the NBA Playoffs and the Eastern Conference still looks noticeably weaker than the West, just as it was during the regular season.  The Cavs weren’t really tested in their sweep over Boston, facing a Celtics team that probably would have struggled to won 30 games against a Western Conference slate.  Atlanta is 0-3 ATS in its first three games against the Nets, looking nothing like the team that dominated the East for extended stretches before the All-Star break.  The Bulls blew a chance to close out their series with the Bucks with a sweep, unable to seal the deal in the closing minutes of Game 4. And while Washington has looked every bit as good as any of the other Eastern Conference contenders, there’s still a lingering stink from the Wizards second half struggles and Randy Wittman’s consistent failures at getting his teams to overachieve.

So which of those four teams (assuming the Hawks don’t blow the series against the Nets) is truly elite, capable of winning at least two more series to make it to the Finals?  Cleveland is the prohibitive favorite to come out of the East, Read more

The NHL in Las Vegas doesn't appear to be a good fit

04.22.2015     08:22 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
FiveThirtyEight.com's Nate Silver gives his take on why an NHL expansion team in Las Vegas is an awful idea.

Our 2013 analysis estimated that there are just 91,000 NHL fans in metro Las Vegas. That’s tiny even by comparison to the six smallest NHL markets that I mentioned before, which have between 146,000 (Nashville) and 279,000 (Tampa) hockey fans. And it’s well below Seattle’s 241,000 or Quebec City’s 530,000 fans.

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The betting handle for next month's Mayweather vs. Pacquiao continues to climb according to various Las Vegas oddsmakers. The price on Mayweather though continues to drop with less than -200 widely in Vegas and offshore.

"Public on the dog," said Art Manteris, sportsbook director of Station Casinos and a boxing expert. "Some of the best sports handicappers and guys I respect the most are on the favorite. I'm just not sure I agree with them this time."

Reid set to retire but still fighting for online gambling ban

04.03.2015     08:04 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
First, the good news. Nevada Sen. Harry Reid recently announced that he will retire at the end of his current term. Now the bad news. Said term runs to January 2017 and in the meantime, Reid appears hellbent on making sure online gambling doesn’t “poison” America.

“Well, we will see what the legislation does — we will see what the House does,” Reid said when asked if he supported Adelson’s push for a complete ban. “But I think, for the state of Nevada, online gaming is not the direction we should go.”
