Maybe the Tropicana Casino should think about banning Don Johnson

11.11.2011     08:29 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We're beginning to think blackjack savant Don Johnson is either the greatest gambler to ever live or the new Director of Marketing at New Jersey's Tropicana Casino. Johnson reportedly won $2 million back in October, while another unnamed player won $1 million. Perhaps the Trop should go the college basketball totals route and limit bets to $250 to save a little face...and money.

"I went back in and did very well," Johnson, of Bensalem, Pa., said of his haul.

"Last month we were the windshield, this month we're the bug," Rodio said. "We're going to have some great months and some months when we get beat up."

College Basketball Betting Notes: Introducing your Wake Forest Demon Deacons

Loyola Maryland at Wake Forest -1.5

So much for wiping the slate clean. After last year's disaster, this is what Wake Forest has heading into this season: Four walk-ons, five scholarship players, one kid transferred to USC, another was kicked off the team, a third was suspended the first semester and a another left the program after a DUI. Hence why the Demon Deacons are 1.5-point home favorites over mediocre Loyola-Maryland.

"We have just got to work with what we have. This is the hand we're dealt with and we're not complaining."

Oregon +12.5 at Vanderbilt O/U 149
Recommendation: Oregon

The Oregon program had a long, steady decline throughout the back end of the Ernie Kent era.  However, it didn’t take Dana Altman long to change the basketball culture in Eugene.  A Ducks team that was picked to finish dead last in the conference prior to the season instead finished with seven conference victories.  They got an invite to the postseason CBI tournament and went on to win the whole thing.  Then, over the summer the team was buoyed by the addition of star Oakland guard Jabari Brown and a trio of transfers (from Minnesota, Wake Forest and Louisiana Tech) two of whom are immediately eligible. They enjoyed a wildly successful summer trip to Italy; a deep, confident team as they travel to Nashville for their season opener.

Friday College Basketball Gambling News and Notes

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Consider this my Friday college basketball stream of consciousness. Enjoy...

There are about 5-6 games that are lined 8-10 points short on the favorite. I don't know specifically which ones (I have a few ideas) but it seems like the last few years, there are always favorites of say -17.5 who if the game was played two weeks later would be -25. Point being, if you are going to get involved in higher lined contests, lay the points...No clue what is going to happen with totals today. CRIS did its normal BS of posting random televised games. How can you hang a total on Ole Miss and UL-Monroe -- a game projected to be a blowout -- and not BYU-Utah State -- a short lined rivalry game with a yearly history? Copy Ken Pom's number, adjust for injuries or suspensions, throw it out there for $250 limit, let it get tossed around a while, and by late afternoon, everyone is happy.

As for the games, let's roll down the card...Wright State might not score 40 points tonight against Ohio State. The Raiders lost their top four scorers and putting the ball in the bucket last year was like pulling teeth...Brent and I talked about Illinois being down making Loyola-Chicago live at Read more

College Basketball Betting News: Rutgers goes freshmen heavy, no seniors

Dartmouth at Rutgers

Article on the youth movement for Rutgers this season. The Scarlet Knights are expected to start a trio of freshmen guards. Head coach Mike Rice brought in a talented recruiting class but noted that it is hard to fully prepare a team that feature seven freshmen and no seniors. The Scarlet Knights play host to Dartmouth tomorrow. The Big Green return four starters but finished 5-23 last season.

“At some points in time I’m excited and think we’re ready for the Big East and sometimes I think we’d have trouble winning in a New Jersey Division III league,” Rice said. “It’s a lack of consistency I think you’ll find with a young team, but there are some things to work with.”

NCAA Basketball Handicapping: Quicken Loans Carrier Classic Preview

Michigan State vs. North Carolina

Some news and notes I picked up for tomorrow’s Quicken Loans Carrier Classic between Michigan State and North Carolina. Scheduled tip-off is 4 pm PT. The game is slated to be played outdoors aboard the USS Carl Vinson in San Diego -- note potential winds up to 12mph!  Also interested to see if the rims are tight. There is a chance of rain, of which the game will moved to the hangar bay -- a gigantic space below the flight deck where helicopters and planes are usually stored. Expecting to see lines posted later this afternoon with the Tar Heels projected as a 9-point favorite.

College Basketball Handicapping: UNLV hosts Thanksgiving's Las Vegas Invite

College Basketball tipped off this week and there will be numerous holiday tournaments on the schedule over Thanksgiving weekend. One of which will be the Las Vegas Invitational hosted by UNLV. I attend the event annually and can usually be found in press row, and this year’s fan turnout should be the strongest ever with the local Rebels competing.

Note that UNLV will play USC in its opening game November 25th while No. 1 North Carolina battles South Carolina. The Rebels may get a shot at the top team in the country in early season action.

Wednesday college basketball betting news and notes

Some good college basketball notes for tonight’s games and beyond.

Article on Duquesne who travels to Arizona as a 9-point underdog for tonight. The Dukes lost Bill Clark and Damian Saunders to graduation. The duo combined for 3,100 points and nearly 1,700 rebounds.

"It's pretty brutal," Everhart said. "We had one a few years ago where we played Duke and Pitt back-to-back to start the year. It turned out to be pretty rewarding because it helped the kids grow. ... You just don't want to get overwhelmed."

Liberty, out of the non-boarded Big South, finds itself a 20.5-point underdog to Texas A&M. The Flames were dealt two significant blows when forwards John Brown and Sommy Ogukkwe were lost for the season with knee injuries. Brown's loss is particularly impactful as he was the Big South's leading rebounder and a Read more

The college basketball season kicked off on Monday and I couldn’t be more excited. I didn’t see enough to warrant a service play selection but made a personal wager on the Mississippi State-Eastern Kentucky game and provided free play analysis (a winner!) in the Sportsmemo Blog. There has been some discussion in the Sportsmemo Forum about the theory behind preparing for a college basketball season. Some take a wait-and-see approach and are content to sit back and evaluate the widespread personnel and coaching changes throughout the country. Others wanting to get a jump on oddsmakers and the betting markets will be more aggressive with what are often times viewed as “soft” lines. I don’t necessarily stick to an exact formula. Throughout my preseason work, I usually come across 10-15 teams that I am Read more
