Rob Veno handicaps the NIT Final Four

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The secondary post season tournaments have all now whittled their way down to their respective semifinal and championship rounds.  All of these tournament formats are different which makes handicapping them different as well. The NIT uses the neutral floor site of Madison Square Garden for their Final Four while the College Insider Tournament plays out on home floors and the CBI uses a best of three championship series played on alternating home courts. Let’s take a brief overview of each tournament beginning with the NIT.

NIT – Shunned by the NCAA Tournament, #1 seeds Alabama and Colorado made the most of their tailor made NIT scheduling (each played all three games at home) to advance into the semifinals. They now get to use ESPN and the bright lights of the New York City stage to prove they were worthy of acceptance into the Big Dance.

Alabama has gone 2-0-1 against the closing number but 3-0 is more likely since the New Mexico game went from -4.5 to -7. Of the four remaining teams, the Read more

Sweet Sixteen Free Betting Pick: BYU Cougars vs. Florida Gators

BYU vs. Florida -3 O/U 149.5
Recommedation: Florida

This total has been hit up to 149.5 and I do expect a high scoring shootout. But unless the nation’s leading scorer Jimmer Fredette is unconscious for BYU, I anticipate a Florida win. Along with senior backcourt partner Jackson Emery, the Cougars have outstanding perimeter play and shooting. BYU hit over nine three-pointers per game in Mountain West Conference play, and Fredette is a 90% foul shooter on a team that makes 80% from the charity stripe. You may recall last year when BYU beat Florida 99-92 in double overtime in the NCAA Tournament opening round. The ‘Jimmer’ only poured in 37 points that game while Gators guard Kenny Boynton had 26 points in defeat.

Now Boynton is a sophomore and will be assigned to slow Jimmer. His backcourt partner Erving Walker is playing his best ball at tourney time scoring 21 and 18 points, hitting over 62% from inside and outside the arc with a 8-2 assist-to-turnover ratio in two Read more

Sweet Sixteen Free Betting Pick: UConn vs. San Diego State

UConn vs. San Diego State
Recommendation: First half over 59.5

San Diego State is a very unique team in that their first half vs. second half scoring shows little difference. Typically second half totals in college basketball are 10-12 points higher than the first half score but through 36 games, SDSU second halves average just three points more (UConn 8.9). The reason? Some of it has to do with blowouts and the Aztecs taking the air out of the ball but it also has to do with making halftime adjustments and leaning on the team's strength which is defense.

UConn's recent run has been greatly assisted by strong starts. In the Huskies' last seven games, they've scored 36 points or more in six of the seven first halfs. Like San Diego State, some of those games bogged down in the second half because UConn wanted to protect leads while also knuckling down on defense. San Diego State doesn't show very high tempo numbers but this team doesn't mind getting out in transition. The same thing holds true Read more

Random Betting News and Notes for the Sweet Sixteen

03.23.2011     02:12 PM     Printer Friendly
A worthy read from SI.com that breaks down the remaining 16 teams in the NCAA Tournament. Couple of highlights worth noting...

- Richmond, VCU and San Diego State are the only teams with seniors accounting for more than 50% of the team's minutes. North Carolina and Arizona are below 10%.

- Duke shooting guard Andre Dawkins should thrive now that Kyrie Irving is back.

- SDSU held Temple's Juan Fernandez to 1-of-10 shooting from inside the arc. Do the same against Kemba Walker and the Aztecs move on to the Elite Eight.

- BYU has scored 21.5% of its points in transition while Wisconsin's fast break production accounts for just 5.7% of its offense.

- Ohio State has an off/def efficiency difference of 34.4, meaning through two games the Buckeyes have averaged 111.3 points per possession and allowed just 76.9 ppp.

- Important note for those who participate in live Read more

Sweet Sixteen Betting News and Notes: East and Southwest Regions

North Carolina scored an NCAA Tournament high 102 points in their opening round matchup against LIU and hung 86 on Washington in the second round. Yet despite those two stellar offensive showings, the Tar Heels are the only team remaining in the dance still looking for their first pointspread cover of the tournament. The other 15 teams all cashed at least one ticket for their supporters in the two games last weekend.

The Big East took a beating on the opening weekend, leaving only two of their 11 NCAA tournament entrants still standing heading into the Sweet Sixteen. And while some pundits probably picked UConn to make it this far, Marquette is a major surprise. The Golden Eagles got past Syracuse despite allowing 55 percent shooting because they dominated the offensive glass and forced turnovers in bunches; two things they’ll need to continue doing successfully in order to hang with the Tar Heels on Friday.

No team in the tournament looked better than Ohio State on the opening weekend, as the Buckeyes Read more

NIT Betting Recommendation: Charleston at Wichita State

Charleston +8.5 at Wichita State O/U 142
Recommendation: Charleston

We cashed in on the Cougars in their NIT opener when they rolled to a 94-84 win over Dayton. Charleston followed that up with a solid road win over Cleveland State as a 4-point underdog. Now they travel to Wichita to take on the Shockers from the Missouri Valley Conference.  Both teams are making the most of the NIT after missing out on the NCAA Tournament.

The Shockers are balanced on offense and rely on their strong defense (41% FG) to suffocate and slow opponents. They play at a slower pace, and Charleston will try to push the tempo a bit more, enabling them to get defenders out of position for looks at the basket. Charleston ranked top-6 in the nation in effective field goal percentage and the Cougars have one of the nation’s top scorers in senior guard Andrew Goudelock. He had 39 points in the win over Dayton, and along with fellow senior guard Donavan Monroe, the Cougars are in good hands in the backcourt Read more

No documented bracket picked the entire Sweet Sixteen

03.23.2011     09:44 AM     Printer Friendly
Not surprising but of the estimated 5.9 million NCAA Tournament brackets filled out by online users at ESPN, not one correctly picked the Sweet Sixteen. According to reports, one bracket nailed 15 of the 16 with the lone miss coming on Kentucky. And for those five "handicappers" who managed to go 0-for-16 on the first day, your special promotional graphic on the front page of sportsmemo.com will be ready shortly.

- 319,081 (4.6%) had No. 11-seeded Marquette beating No. 3-seeded Syracuse in the third round.

- 18,950 (0.3%) had No. 10-seeded Florida State and No. 11-seeded VCU in the Sweet 16.

- 38,634 (0.7%) picked all four teams from the East to advance (Ohio State, North Carolina, Kentucky, Marquette).

- 2,811 (less than 0.05%) picked all four teams from the Southwest to advance (Kansas, Richmond, VCU, Florida State).

- There were 20,821 brackets that had each of the four "underdog" Read more

Sweet Sixteen Betting Preview: Marquette vs. North Carolina

Sweet Sixteen
East Region
Marquette vs. North Carolina -4.5 O/U 149.5

Quick Take: Of the 11 Big East teams to make the NCAA Tournament, only Marquette opened as a first round underdog and yet the Golden Eagles along with UConn are the only teams that remain. Marquette is exactly what you want in an underdog; interchangeable parts, solid on both ends of the floor, hard working and a strong track record (14-5 ATS run as a dog). North Carolina meanwhile has been a pointspread disaster in the postseason with five straight ATS losses (four of five if you count their five-point OT loss vs. Clemson in the ACC Tournament as a push). And away from Chapel Hill, the Tar Heels have had their struggles. In games away from Dean Dome against teams that made the NCAA Tournament here are the results:

vs. Washington – 86-83 SU win, ATS loss
vs. Duke – 75-58 SU loss, ATS loss
vs. Clemson – 92-87 OT SU win, ATS push

Sweet Sixteen Betting Preview: Arizona Wildcats vs. Duke Blue Devils

Sweet Sixteen
West Region
Arizona vs. Duke -8.5 O/U 144.5

Quick Take: Some may have soured on the Blue Devils after nearly blowing a 15-point lead with 10 minutes remaining against Michigan, but practically every title winner, with the recent exception of North Carolina, had one or two “close games” they had to sweat out so en route to glory. Arizona is not a great defensive team and routinely allowed opponents to shoot 50% or better from two-point range. The Wildcats also don’t create a lot of turnovers which means Duke will have plenty of opportunities for good looks. That is if the Blue Devils don’t fall in love with the three-point shot, which Arizona does defend well (29.1%). Against Michigan, Duke was 5-20 from beyond the arc and with the exception of their blowout win over Hampton, Duke is 22-73, 30% from three its last four games. The three-point shot essentially won Duke the title last year (44-110, 40%) so it will be interesting to see if they Read more
