NCAAF Betting Notes: Big East offensive lines continue to struggle

09.13.2011     07:48 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Good article on the poor offensive line play throughout the Big East. Four teams rank 90th or worse in rushing yards per game and five teams have allowed four sacks or more. Louisville’s completely rebuilt front five has struggled. Rutgers still can't protect the quarterback, allowing four sacks and 10 QB hurries in its loss to North Carolina. Pittsburgh has allowed the most sacks (9) of any team in the country. And West Virginia has yet to find its running game (72 ypg) despite playing Marshall and Norfolk State. This week will be a challenge for some of those units with non-conference games against Kentucky, Maryland, Iowa, Iowa State and USC.

College Football Betting: More bad news for Boston College Eagles

Duke at Boston College -7 O/U 48

It hasn't been a good start to the season for Boston College who head into this weekend's game against Duke 0-2. Yesterday it was announced that offensive coordinator Kevin Rogers is will take leave of absence due to health concerns. The secondary is even more depleated after cornerback CJ Jones was hurt (knee) in the loss to UCF and will miss the remainder of the season. Jones is the third projected starter from the secondary to be lost for the year. Starting center Mark Spinney is also banged up (leg) and listed as questionable for Saturday.

Duke-Stanford game very popular for sportsbooks and bettors

09.13.2011     06:44 AM     Printer Friendly
There was a lot of two-way action on last week's Stanford-Duke matchup. According to one oddsmaker, it had the largest handle of any matchup on the Saturday card with the public hammering the Cardinal and the wise guys pouncing on the Blue Devils every time +21.5 popped up. The end result was a win for public as Stanford crushed 44-17.

"I couldn’t believe the action on the Stanford game, it was the largest of the day," said Scucci. "Every time I moved past 21, we’d get a bet immediately sending me back. Stanford was by far the most popular side of the day."

NCAAF Handicapping: Notre Dame opens -5 against Michigan State

Michigan State at Notre Dame -5 O/U 51

Hilton oddsmaker Jay Kornegay puts the Notre Dame-Michigan State line into perspective. The Irish are perhaps better than their 0-2 record would indicate – though how good are you when you turn the ball over 10 times in two games? Most shops currently show Notre Dame -5 with a couple (CRIS, Pinnacle) at -4.5. The Hilton however seems comfortable hanging a -6.

"Notre Dame is a very quality team," said Jay Kornegay, SportsBook director at the Las Vegas Hilton. "They're not an 0-2 team. That's what the record indicates, but we look well beyond the record and look at the box score and how they Read more

NCAAF Gambling Notes: Teams stepping up in class for Week 3

You mean we have an actual game this week? Taking a look at college football teams that take a considerable step up in class this week after back-to-back cakewalks to open the season.

Florida -9 vs. Tennessee (UAB, Florida Atlantic) - Are we sure Urban Meyer isn't ghost-coaching this team? The Gators won their first two games by a combined score of 80-3. John Brantley was far from lights out with only one touchdown pass and a pair of interceptions but he did complete 67% of his passes.

Illinois +1 vs. Arizona State (Arkansas State, South Dakota State) - You'd almost wish the Illini got a stiffer test before playing the Sun Devils. Oddsmakers not giving them much respect by opening ASU as a road Read more

Imagine trying to solve a puzzle without all of the pieces or paint a picture without a full palette of colors at your disposal. In both cases you could come close to achieving your goal, but in the end it would be a frustrating, unfinished product. Trying to handicap college football games without all of the colors or with bent, out of shape pieces is also an exercise in futility. It can also be a costly mistake to make when you have your money on the line.

Luckily for us, the NFL provides everything we need in an accurate manner. There are also different ways to harvest this data on a play-by-play, down-by-down scale. You can find anything you want about an NFL offense or defense, and best of all it is accurate information. But with college football, that is definitely not the case. The NCAA, for whatever reason, does not even care to categorize each play in the right place. Sacks are the end of a passing play and not an attempt to run the ball. However, according to NCAA stats, they go down as a running play. Snapping the Read more

College Football ATS Notes: Week 3 potential look-ahead situations

Submitted by Andrew Lange

A look at this weekend's potential look-ahead spots for a couple of college football teams.

Alabama -46.5 vs. North Texas (vs. Arkansas Week 4) - It won't take much focus for the Crimson Tide to name the score in this one. Last year, in a similar spot, Alabama came off a win over Penn State and went on the road and crushed Duke 62-13 prior to playing the Razorbacks.

Arkansas -24.5 vs. Troy (at Alabama Week 4) - The Razorbacks are expected to get a slightly tougher challenge as Troy has the experience and capabilities to give the big boys a test.

Michigan -28.5 vs. Eastern Michigan (vs. San Read more

Oddsmakers react to USC-Utah score change

09.12.2011     09:21 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Update on the USC-Utah pointspread fiasco.

"Vegas is split on this," said Jay Kornegay, the Las Vegas Hilton's race and sports book director. "It's all up to the house rules, and even how you interpret those rules."

"So, basically, it says both," Kornegay said. "We decided to go with the corrected score."

Jay Rood, race and sports book director for MGM Resorts, said, "We stuck with the original score of 17-14. Our house rules don't recognize overturned games. We could've paid off (USC bettors), but what if it happens again next week? We don't want to establish that precedent."

College Football ATS Notes: Arizona State defense exposed against Missouri

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Expectations for this 2011 Arizona State season have run wild since early April. Objectively looking at it, they do have the necessary talent and schedule (on paper) to be a serious conference contender and post Dennis Erickson’s best record in Tempe. On the field, some of that talent is proving itself to be real. Junior quarterback Brock Osweiler is playing very well, the skill positions players truly are explosive big play threats, and the offensive line is vastly improved in all facets. Then…there is the ASU defense.

Within about one quarter of watching this unit against Missouri last Friday night you could see that ASU’s back seven is a mess in the areas of scheme and mental discipline and tackling. To be fair you have to observe all four quarters because level of play does at times swing tremendously in college football. However, there was nothing in that game to sway my Read more
