Fairway Jay gets inside scoop on NFL Week 1 and USC-Utah game

09.13.2011     11:08 AM         Printer Friendly
Submitted by

I spoke with the Hilton's Jay Kornegay about NFL Week 1 results from behind the counter. Here is what he had to say...

Good games for us:
Bills
Browns
Jags
Cowboys

Bad games for us:
Lions
Eagles
Cardinals landing 7

Great handle on these games:
Lions
Eagles
Ravens
Chargers
Jets

Parlay cards were very good as we had our share of underdogs and dogs winning outright (killed a lot of teasers). Overs were actually OK for us as a lot of people thought the scoring was going to be down due to the new kickoff rules.

Station Casino’s update on payouts for that game from Jason McCormick, Sportsbook Director at Red Rock Resort...

We have posted the game 17-14 USC…..however we will be honoring all USC -8½ as winners and USC -9 as refunds.

We are also paying out USC -3½ on second half wagers.

College Football Betting: More bad news for Boston College Eagles

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Duke at Boston College -7 O/U 48

It hasn't been a good start to the season for Boston College who head into this weekend's game against Duke 0-2. Yesterday it was announced that offensive coordinator Kevin Rogers is will take leave of absence due to health concerns. The secondary is even more depleated after cornerback CJ Jones was hurt (knee) in the loss to UCF and will miss the remainder of the season. Jones is the third projected starter from the secondary to be lost for the year. Starting center Mark Spinney is also banged up (leg) and listed as questionable for Saturday.

NCAAF Gambling Notes: Teams stepping up in class for Week 3

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
You mean we have an actual game this week? Taking a look at college football teams that take a considerable step up in class this week after back-to-back cakewalks to open the season.

Florida -9 vs. Tennessee (UAB, Florida Atlantic) - Are we sure Urban Meyer isn't ghost-coaching this team? The Gators won their first two games by a combined score of 80-3. John Brantley was far from lights out with only one touchdown pass and a pair of interceptions but he did complete 67% of his passes.

Illinois +1 vs. Arizona State (Arkansas State, South Dakota State) - You'd almost wish the Illini got a stiffer test before playing the Sun Devils. Oddsmakers not giving them much respect by opening ASU as a road Read more

MNF Handicapper Preview: Oakland Raiders at Denver Broncos

Oakland at Denver -3 O/U 41.5

Oakland travels to Denver for some Monday Night Football action and the Broncos are sure to be sky high at Mile High. Both teams feature new coaches with Hugh Jackson in Oakland and longtime Carolina coach John Fox taking over in Denver.

From a pointspread perspective, the Raiders have been the hottest team in the AFC the past few years, going 10-2 ATS versus the division since 2009 including 6-0 SU and ATS last year. Yet Oakland failed to make the playoffs again, and tonight is a tough task as Denver plays with big redemption following a pair of losses to the Raiders last season including an embarrassing 59-14 thrashing on this same field. Oakland also pounded Denver at home last season 39-23; however note that Tim Tebow was under center for the Broncos. Read more

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Welcome to Teddy Covers’ unique look at the NFL. Teddy watches games all day on Sunday; typing furiously on his laptop while giving you the key info that the box scores and game recaps simply don’t have.  Today: NFC tidbits from Week1.

Chicago: This offense came out of the gate looking completely in sync despite a myriad of issues on the offensive line.  Rookie left tackle Gabe Carimi (first round out of Wisconsin) had some real growing pains.  Right guard Lance Louis left with an ankle injury and didn’t return.  Jay Cutler got sacked five times and threw a bad interception.  Still, the offense was terrific!  Cutler is now fully versed in his second year running the Mike Martz offense.  There's a level of confidence and continuity here that we haven't seen in Chicago in quite some time, and there were absolutely no repercussions from last year’s playoff Read more

College Football ATS Notes: Arizona State defense exposed against Missouri

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Expectations for this 2011 Arizona State season have run wild since early April. Objectively looking at it, they do have the necessary talent and schedule (on paper) to be a serious conference contender and post Dennis Erickson’s best record in Tempe. On the field, some of that talent is proving itself to be real. Junior quarterback Brock Osweiler is playing very well, the skill positions players truly are explosive big play threats, and the offensive line is vastly improved in all facets. Then…there is the ASU defense.

Within about one quarter of watching this unit against Missouri last Friday night you could see that ASU’s back seven is a mess in the areas of scheme and mental discipline and tackling. To be fair you have to observe all four quarters because level of play does at times swing tremendously in college football. However, there was nothing in that game to sway my Read more

NFL Betting Stock Watch: Arizona is fade material in the early going

09.11.2011     07:34 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Sell the Arizona Cardinals – The Cardinals took a pretty big gamble when they obtained quarterback Kevin Kolb. Not only did they trade steady cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and two second round draft choices, but they inked him to a 5-year $63 million deal with $21 million guaranteed. Of course, this was for someone who has only started a handful of games throughout his career and has yet to really prove himself. There’s plenty of pressure on the signal caller to perform and I’m not sold that he can carry this football team. Yes, he’s an upgrade over last year but the Cardinals will still find it difficult to run the football with a below average offensive line and running backs. Without any kind of running game to take pressure off of Kolb, the Cardinals could very well be offensively challenged once again. Meanwhile, on defense there’s some good and bad. Their defensive line should be rock solid Read more

NFL Handicapping: Week 1 Betting Trends and Angles

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We kicked off the NFL season with an easy over the total winner when the Packers beat the Saints, 42-34, in a shootout. Now the rest of the league kicks off on Sunday and Monday, and thought you might be interested in some trends and angles for opening week NFL action. Many line moves in Week 1 (some big moves) with the betting lines being posted for over a month and bettors able to fire at the lines based on expected line moves, preseason play and injury reports.

Less than two weeks ago, the Texans were a 3-point favorite over the Colts, but with Peyton Manning’ status in question the line zoomed to Houston -8.5/9. Manning then had his second neck surgery this week. Note additional line moves on other games of interest, and know that Week 1 is often the biggest betting week of the NFL season. Expect some line adjustments in Week 2 following surprising and/or poor play by teams (and even more so in college football).
I use a combination of fundamental (matchups), statistical and situational handicapping and will Read more

Second half kick-off list

That will wrap up today's live blog. Great job by the Sportsmemo Crew with a 5-1 day. That ups our two-year live blog record to 53-33, 62%. Looking for more next Saturday.

(2:36 PT) Rob Veno passes along a recommendation on Memphis-Arkansas State Over 27.5 1st half.

(2:32 PT) Heavy steam on Temple across the board. Up to -16.5/-17 (Jazz) against woeful Akron.

(2:22 PT) Tim Trushel recommends Colorado +2.5 2nd half.

(2:10 PT) From Teddy: New Mexico St 8.5 yards per play at half v Minny. USC 5.1 yards per play vs Gophers D last week. Oregon more than 400 yards @ half v Nevada!

(2:09 PT) Now we know why Joe Pa was reluctant to name a starting QB. Nittany Lions' signal callers: 4-of-16, 41 yards first half against Alabama. Tide up 17-3.

(1:58 PT) Erin Rynning recommends NC State -3 2nd half.

(1:50 PT) Duke picks off Luck and takes it in for six. Cutcliff calls onside and Duke recovers. Blue Devils with the ball down 10-7 with 2 left in the 1st half.

(1:46 PT) From Erin Rynning: Gophers not quite ready for 3-TD favorite status, what happened to the D that shut down USC in 2nd H? New Mexico State up 21-7 (9.8 ypp) in Minneapolis.

(1:40 PT) A little easier against the WAC: Oregon up 27-0 (246 yards) with 9 and change left in the first against Nevada.

(1:33 PT) Renfree under constant pressure (two sacks already). Duke moving the ball against Stanford but Cardinal turning up the heat on third downs (0-for-6).
